That's really stupid. Why don't the olympic teams just offer contracts to players and we can be rid of the charade that the olympics are about national pride or the spirit of compe ion?

San Antonio Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon recently gained Russian citizenship and is now able to play for the Russian National Team.

Hopefully the US team will see this and get her on board quick.
Why? Every national team can have only 1 such player.
Although in this case it looks silly, unless if she ever played in Russia or something.
That's one too many IMO. I didn't see anything in her bio to suggest she's got any reason to want to be a Russian citizen aside from her inability to make the US team.
It is nothing new. JR Holden plays for the Russian men's team.

Hammon plays for CSKA Moscow. In the Euroleague women's all star game yesterday, Hammon actually played for the "Europe" team and not the "Rest of the World" team.
Ploto's right... Hammon's been playing in Euroleague for a while now.
I dont' care if she plays for Afghanistan. Let the balla ball.
2nd that!
The photo should be used in a caption this thread. Look at those 2 ladies standing next to Becky. Who's knows what they're saying. Only the sick minds of ST posters could know.
Bump for the confirmation. Becky is playing for Team Russia in the Olympics.

So??? Shouldn't this be in the Spurs forum?
this is good news.. i hope Argentina follow what Russia is doing and hires a couple of players from the NBA to replace Pepe Sanchez and Hermann... Andre Miller and Jamario Moon won;t hurt...
No, she doesn't play for the Spurs.
ESPN analyst and former WNBA player Stacey Dales ain't too shabby either.![]()
From an emotional standpoint, I can understand the criticisms that Becky's getting on this choice. But from a practical standpoint, I can completely understand her decision and find it perfectly defensible.
Becky Hammon has been among the better players in the WNBA for years. But through the series of Olympic and World Championship cycles that have coincided with her professional career, it's been quite clear that the powers-that-be in USA Basketball don't consider her to be a worthy option for making the club for one of those compe ions. The fact that she can't even get that chance -- and hasn't been able to get that chance -- for years is absurd; but it's also an excellent justification (I think) for finding opportunity elsewhere. If she has a dream to play in the Olympics and has the ability to do that, she shouldn't have to have that chance pass her by because she's an outcast in the bureaucracy of her national federation.
