Mavs' Nowitzki falls, limps off court with leg, ankle injury

DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks expect to be without star forward Dirk Nowitzki for at least two weeks after Nowitzki was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's 88-81 loss to San Antonio.

A stoned-faced Mark Cuban walked out of American Airlines Center with two fingers aloft to reflect the initial two-week projection.

But the Mavericks owner stressed that the time frame is only preliminary and won't be confirmed until a more complete medical examination is made Monday.

Nowitzki crumpled to the floor and clutched his left leg in agony after attempting to block a shot by San Antonio's Ime Udoka. Nowitzki's leg appeared to fold awkwardly after Udoka's right leg came down on Nowitzki's as they landed.

Nowitzki started reaching for his ankle, then grabbed near his calf, slapping the floor in agony. He put a hand on his head, then didn't move while the team's orthopedist and athletic trainer worked on his lower leg. The arena was silent until Nowitzki sat up.

Nowitzki had 11 points and seven rebounds at the time, with San Antonio leading 56-54 and 3:18 left in the period.

In a statement released by the team, Nowitzki said: "I fell awkwardly and my left leg got caught underneath of me. I am going to get re-evaluated in the morning and I hope to have more information then."

The Mavericks' hope is that Nowitzki merely sustained damage to his left ankle -- an injury he historically recovers from as quickly as anyone in the league -- and avoided a knee injury.

Damn. As much as I hate the Mavs I understand all to well what it means to lose an important part of your team. Plus Dirk seems to be a very likable guy (it should have been Terry). I hope it's not that serious. It will be a real fight for Dallas to make the playoffs now.

Wow... maybe the Mavs will miss the playoffs? 0-8 vs. winning teams and now without their best player for likely 7-10 games. Tough break.

I don't want to see anyone get injured, but if I could switch Dirk for Terry or Stackhouse I'd do it in a second.

Did anyone ever see the Punk'd episode with Dirk?

They go to some restaurant in Dallas (Finley is with him and the Mavs atheltic trainer) and some little kid comes up to him and asks him to autograph his shirt and his Lakers hat or something. Dirk obliingly signs, Then the kid comes back 5 minutes later with a HUGE trash bag of crap to sign (so he could sell it on ebay). Like baseball bats, t-shirts, etc. And Dirk signs like 10 of those things until he finally says enough. But then the kid's mom is like oh come on, he's just a kid and he adores you. And Dirk's like I already signed a bunch of stuff for him and I just want to eat. And the kid keeps bugging him and Dirk, nice guy that he is gives up and continues signing .

The best is when Dirk signed the kid's Lebron jersey.

Oh yea, I thought it was a Lakers jersey for some reason. Finley looked at him and said "Dude, that's a Lebron jersey, you can't sign that." But Dirk felt so bad he actually did!!

    huh?

If you are going to engage in classless celebration of an injury, at least have it make sense.

With apologies to good guys like Matchman and The Franchise, I don't get why re ed Rocket fan is so gleeful about our franchise player going down. Congratulations, your season will last two weeks longer than ours will. Cherish another first-round exit.

Dirk is a good player, not celbrating his injury. Just saying that the Mav's playoff chances just got a lot slimmer.
