San francisco guilty of tampering...forfeit fifth round pick and swap 3rd round with the bears...WTF

The NFL has stripped the 49ers of their 2008 fifth-round pick after finding the club guilty of tampering with Bears LB Lance Briggs last October.

The Bears and Niners will also switch picks in the third round, giving Chicago the No. 39 selection. San Francisco moves back to No. 44. This is a significant blow to the 49ers' draft and a nice lift for the Bears'. Like he has with off-field conduct, it appears commissioner Roger Goodell will crack down on tampering going forward

Weird. I figured this was more common than NCAA teams paying for players.

What a crock of . EVERY team tampers in this way.

Does this mean we might get a ruling on the Jets offering Deion Branch a contract while he was still under contract with the Patriots?

Yea see this is the problem, unless you are going to retroactively penalize every team then he should have just issued a memo stating that going forward this would not be tolerated. Godell is really going to be on an island when it comes to owner support if he keeps pulling these things.

On every issue that has come up under his regime, the new Commish has put his foot down and said, "No more." He made it very clear when he came in that he wouldn't tolerate any more stupidity. This seems to be just another example. What, you think he needed to issue a memo saying gun fights in strip clubs and dog fighting would no longer be tolerated, too?

Illegal is illegal; just because the previous Commish wouldn't do anything about it doesn't mean the new one won't. Though the Niners didn’t sign the player with whom they tampered, attempted cheating is still cheating. The league was right to punish the 49ers, assuming the evidence suggested that tampering indeed occurred.

I saw a statement released by the NFL stating, "The 49ers are not the first team to do it. They are not the first to get caught. They are the first to be punished." Well, if you wanted a memo, there you go. Cheating is cheating. Just because it has never been punished in the past doesn't make it any less cheating, any better or worse than videotaping practices; cheating is cheating. If the patsies get punished for the 1st time for something that has supposedly been going on forever, then the 9ers should to.

Props to the Commish for attempting to level the playing field.

The problem is that the Commish is having the Bears and Niners swap their 3rd round draft picks. In effect that punishes every other NFL team. That is ridiculous!

... and just HOW exactly does that punish every other NFL team?

From what I can gather, the only solid evidence against the 49ers during the hearing was a phone record of two calls the club placed to agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Bears linebacker Lance Briggs.

One story is that there were two "missed calls" with no voice messages. The second version - essentially corroborating the first report - was that there were two "20-second" phone calls. In other words, a 20-second phone call is a "missed call."

my guess would be that people prepare for the draft and they know the teams need in front of them..so they were preparing for the 49'ers pick off of needs and now they gotta re prepare for the bears...if that makes sense..

    but just a guess

It gives them a better draft pick. It's not difficult to figure out.

Right... so the Bears move up to the #70 pick from the #75 pick and this screws the entire NFL exactly how?

It gives them a better pick! What did Chicago do to deserve a better pick??? Do you not understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?

So... allowing the 9ers to cheat is ok but punishing them by having them swap picks with the team they tampered with screws the entire league. Makes perfect sense to me.

Again, why do the Bears get a better draft pick? That makes no sense at all.

The Niners should be penalized and they were. However, the league has improved the Bears draft position after no harm has come to them. That is ridiculous.

Why should colleges be put on probation when the outgoing coaches and former players go unpunished?

Why should fans be punished by not being able to see their team on tv?

Why should the Raiders be punished because our owner can't die?

It is what it is. Stop your constant crying and deal with it.
