I don't remember how the standings work. I thought the division leaders get the top three spots requardless of records, then adjusted for homecourt after the first round?

How is Houston above Utah, when Phoenix and SA is not? Current conference standings.

    1. NO
    2. LA
    3. HOU
    4. Utah
    5. PHOE
    6. SA
    7. DAL
    8. GS

No, the top 4 seeds are the 3 division leaders and the team with the next best record.

The next best record in the top 4 can be seeded higher than the other division leaders if the record is better. Thus, Utah has to be in the top 4 since they lead their division, but Houston has a better record than them (but worse than NO and LA), so they get 3rd.

If the Spurs grab the #5 spot and obtain a better season record than Utah, then we would actually have HCA against Utah. Essentlally we'd be a 4 seed.

I say just go by best records...that's the best way to go. What if you have a 4 seed thats say 50-32, and two teams that are 51-31 (both worse than top 3 in conference), you'd still have a good team better than the 4th seed getting jobbed.

No, that's what I was saying above (read). If that 5th seed we're to obtain a better record than the 4th seed, then the 5th seed would have HCA

I agree. This whole ranking thing a a complete joke the way it is now. Granted, teams are usually not this close coming down the stretch, but the NBA has to pull their head out of their butt an realize that they need to fix this.

the league would have to dissolve the conferences for the regular season too since good eastern teams would have an unfair advantage over their western counterparts.

I don't quite get what the advantage would be? Just a little fuzzy this am...
