What is the Sound of One Hand Snapping?
April 8, 2008 4:11 PM
The other night, Portland's Joel Przybilla broke his hand against the Spurs.
Play-by-play guy Mike Barrett has a little tale that's a nice reminder of how physically tough things can be in professional sports:
After the game I talked to Joel, who had his right hand heavily wrapped. He said he was on pain killers, and was very disappointed, as his goal was to play in all 82 games. He got to 77, and that streak now comes to an end.
He said the first one who told him the hand was broken wasn't a doctor, but was instead Tim Duncan. "Tim told me at the other end 'you broke you hand, man.' I said 'how do you know that?'"
He said Duncan told him he was right behind the play and heard the hand break.
You have to appreciate Duncan's role here as reporter. "Hey, Joelie, some bad news for you ..."
And if you're a sicko like me, and wonder what it looks like to hear a hand break (work with me on this one) you can watch that play in slow-motion here.

I had Portalnd's feed for the game. They replayed it several times, thankfully with no sound. It looked like it hurt. A lot.
You can tell from his facial reaction, He knew it.

Przybilla got a LOT of respect out of me for that game! That dude straight broke his hand and still played. I would love to see him in a Spurs uniform one day.
ditto that one, gotta give him respect and toughness
Joel Pryzbilla = Vanilla Godzilla
In that video, right after they show Oberto get fouled on a made basket, he claps hands with Manu. And then Manu makes this angry face and a gesture with his hands (as if he had a ball in his hands and he was bringing his hands together, but I don't remember seeing a ball in his hands). I was just wondering if anyone who watched the entire game would know what made Manu seem so upset at that moment.
To clarify: Manu didn't make the face at Oberto, he was just staring straight ahead.
