We'd be playing Houston (and likely kicking their asses) but the real shocker is that Minny wouldn't even be in the postseason.

    They have imploded... big time.

    "likely kicking their asses"

Excellent extrapolation from 2 of the ugliest Spurs' losses of the season.

I was waiting for the first "if the playoffs started today" comment.

This has to be the earliest time ever for this statement.....

Gee, I wonder if it is coincidence that it occured the very day that SA takes the lead in the #1 seed race.

The Spurs haven't played them well lately but I've no illusions that we would drop a 7 game series against them. Let's not go overboard here. Playoff mindset != regular season mindset even though I wish the Spurs were more consistent in this regard.

Actually, the main reason for this post was not our capturing the #1 seed but seeing that Minny was not even in a playoff spot.

If someone told me last summer that around midseason next year the Shaq-less Lakers would be in 6th with Minny not even in the hunt I'd have said they were on crack.

    me 2.

I picked Minn to win the Northwest division and did not even consider Seattle for the playoffs....they have switched positions.

Yes, regular season translates perfectly to post season.

More importantly, one of these teams will most likely NOT make the playoffs:

    -Lakers
    -Houston
    -Memphis
    -Minnesota

Which is somewhat funny, except I also don't like the idea of them getting a lottery pick.

My prediction: Of those four teams (Houston, Minnesota, Memphis, Lakers) the one to not make the playoffs will be Houston. Because outside of McGrady and Yao, they are old and slow, and they will falter by the end of the season. SA will spank them when they come to the SBC - remember, they haven't played here yet.

Minnesota will make a trade and get better, because KG will will them back into the #7 or #8 spot. Memphis is just good enough to eke in at #7 or #8, and LA is showing they are a lot better than people expected - I think Kobe's injury will prove to help them - but we'll see if Kobe and Lamar can share when Kobe returns.

Bottom line, if we stay at #1 or #2, we may wind up facing Memphis or Minnesota in the 1st round - tough matchups for the Spurs.

    "-Lakers
    -Houston
    -Memphis
    -Minnesota"

I'd say MIN is at greatest risk, with Lakers 6th seed or lower. MEM and HOU play pretty good defense which will carry them, and MEM can score a lot better than HOU, who can really struggle to score.

    Tdoay:

    San Antonio
    Phoenix
    Seattle
    Sacramento
    Dallas
    LA Lakers
    Memphis
    Houston
    ==========
    Minnesota

With the usual bickering over 8th seed aside, I bet the set of WC playoffs teams are those above.

Yeah, we'll probably lose to Houston in the playoffs.

Garnett with a good a coach, and a lottery pick, and clearing house of Sprewell and Olowakandi.

    Kinda scary.

Except that KG's already played with a ton of lottery pick-level players:

    Marbury, Brandon, Wally, Gugliotta.

while i sincerely doubt houston could pull a miracle upset of the spurs in a 7 gamer, they could definitely steal one or two with the grind it out D and TMac heroics as we have seen.....and we would be left with a tired Spurs team heading into round 2 which would not be a good thing seeing as how possible matchups with run n gun teams loom...

8th seed is a wildcard, up for grabs, down-to-the-wire stuff, even for TWolves' paws.

But, do you think the other 7 teams (any order) is pretty much determined today?

or do you think one or more of those 7 will not make the playoffs?

    Marbury, Brandon, Wally, Gugliotta.

Name one that's actually done something.

Brandon and wally never played any D. Marbury, well, he's proven what he is.

Christian Laettner was the number THREE overall pick in the '93??? season. What does that mean? Kandi was a number one.

As long as McFlip is deciding who to draft, i think its not a worry. Look at the wolves track record with draft picks.

I think you're agreeing with me, sick.

My point is that if the Wolves don't make the playoffs, get a lottery pick, and start over, that's not really scary.

    Well, maybe for you.

on one hand yeah. Draft picks for the wolves don't mean anything. McHale doesn't know how to draft. Look at the years past. In recent memory who besides Rasho, KG, and Wally were worthy of even drafting? Shawn Marion was available when wally was taken, granted he blew out his knee and hasn't been the same but still.

FO shakeup would do more than a lottery pick

Spurs pick up players like Ginoboli, Parker, Udirh, while McFlip pick up Rickert, Iggy, Loren Woods, etc.....

They traded a lot of their slow players for quicker guys who can run the floor. While that didn't show up in the most recent game against the Spurs, most nights they are pushing the pace and scoring a lot in transition.

That style of play allows McGrady to do his things, and voila -- the Rockets have won 8 of 12.

Rumor on SI.com today about Wolves trading Spree to Indy as a one-year Artest replacement for Croshere and Bender.

While it was probably just a guess, it does make sense in that Indy is probably one team with a hole that would take a short-termer like Spree.

Also, just think what a positive influence he would have on Stephen Jackson . . .
