Digital Cameras for Dummies

Looking for a digital camera. I would like to keep myself from spending more than six bills on one since this will be my first digital camera. I do not like Sony and its proprietary memory stick, any suggestions?

I have the Kodak EasyShare DX6490

It is completely idiot proof and you hardly ever have to charge the battery. The downsize is that it's not slim and won't fit into a pocket. But it takes awesome pictures. My dad and friend have the same camera and they love it also. I think it's around $500. I also have the printer for it.

for functionality, you cannot get better than the Olympus C765. about $350.

for looks and less zoom, i like the Olympus Stylus Verve. about $300 bux.

but you need to do the research, check reviews at circuit city.com and on amazon.com and find one you like. good luck.

Olympus makes great cameras. 750, 765, etc. make great cameras.

Cannon Powershot S500 are super easy to use. They are very small, have few buttons, and depending on the picture resolution you want, come in a variety of prices. The link goes to teh 5 megapixel one that goes for $369.00 It uses compact flash which is pretty cheap these days. It only comes with a 32mb flash card so you should probably get atleast a 256mb one, an extra battery, and a case at purchase.
I have had two other Canon models that were very good.

I'm with the devil on this one. When you look at digital still cameras the quality of the picture processing comes first, the resolution second and battery stamina third. The media itself is not important since prices between different types of cards are pretty much the same (the same goes for the hardware readers etc...)
From what I've seen the best processing is to be found in cameras by Sony, Nikon and Canon (in no particular order).

Thanks for the info, I went to Best Buy to check out some of these cameras today. I really liked the Canon PowerShot S1, its only a 3.2 Megapixal though and had some bad online reviews. The Olympus cameras had great reviews so I guess I'll have to narrow the choices from a few of the Olympus cameras.

I am not gonna do any hardcore photography that requires detail of a fleas little toe, but I would like to have a decent camera just for all around pictures. Im starting to think anything over four megapixals would be too much for my needs. Shopping for a camera really sucks especially with all the freakin choices and features.

I love my Sony digital but Olympus would be the next best choice. Check the megapixels and digital vs optical zoom, that's probably the most important. Kodak isn't as good for dependability, my parents had two and they both died and I didn't like their quality much either.

I think Kodak had a reputation for bad cameras, but the one I have has received great reviews from users (which you can read at Circuit City dot com). My husband was going to get something else, but what impressed him was the lens.

I have a HP315 and my sister just bought a HP407. Both are excellent cameras that take great pics. Are not as expensive as some of the others and as you said, if you are not interested in taking a shot of a hair on a flea's leg, it is perfect. Not complicated. Won't kill the wallet either.

My suggestion would be a Canon. I have a A80 and it's pretty easy to use, but also has a lot of features, and the quality of the pics is great.

I've seen a lot of Kodaks come back for repairs at my uh, place of work to be named later.

I've got an Olympus and get great shots with it. I know some graphics pros and some photography pros, and unless you're springing for something like a Canon Digital Rebel or the like, for more "budget" oriented photography go with a Nikon or Olympus (Canon third).

Sony and their proprietary memory sticks can go suck an egg.
