I got to chapter 2 before I had to stop reading.
The only thing that bores me more than this notion that the spurs are boring, is the constant angst of spurs fans complaining that they're not boring.
As a life-long Spurs fan I understand the sentiment,but have grown tired of the same song and dance every year. "We're not boring." "We never get any respect." "They never show the Spurs any love." So I figured it was time to get off my lazy ass and throw my two cents in.
Look, the Spurs have let themselves be defined by a national media that for the most part, could give a damn about the team or city. Think about it. Why would anybody outside San Antonio actually take the time get to know the players personalities, or appreciate how good this team really is?
The national media doesn't have any emotional investment in this team. So someone says the Spurs are boring, so that must mean the Spurs are boring. Someone says the team has no personality, so the team has no personality. And on, and on, and on. It sure is a of a lot easier than actually having to be a journalist.
Journalist/reporters once upon a time actually found stories about a team or player that would generate interest for the average joe-blow. Now, if the story doesn't hit them smack in the face(especially in a smaller markets case) it's a story that will never be told.
The Spurs players and coaches haven't helped, nor do I think they really care about how they are perceived by the national media. Spurs marketing cares about the people and their product, but it hasn't been real effective in defining an image for a team that could truly go down as one of the great dynasties of all time.
If this team is unable to capture the imagination of the public on the court, it has to be done off the court. The Lakers were "Showtime", the Pistons were "The Bad Boys." Why couldn't the Spurs be known as "The Machine", or their recent run called "The Black Reign?" It may be a gimmick but gimmicks work.
As much as we're tired of hearing and reading the same old recycled garbage about the Spurs, the national media is equally as tired of writing that garbage year after year. So why not give them another angle, and the league a new way to market the Spurs.
San Antonio isn't New York, Los Angeles, Boston, or Chicago. So it will always be an uphill battle for the Spurs no matter how good they are. But if we can define this team now, it will keep them from being defined by those who would rather see this team fall off the face of the earth later.
If this Spurs era is one day remembered as something like "The Black Reign", they're immortal like "Showtime" and "The Bad Boys." If not? This team (as rediculous as it sounds) will never receive the respect and admiration they truly deserve. Thirty years from now this team will be remembered as a "good" team with a "good run." With the right marketing though, they could be remembered as one of the greatest teams in all of sports history.
The only way it's going to happen though, is if the Spur fans make it happen. The Spurs organization has proven this much over the years.
With all the national media around for the playoffs, It's the perfect time to get noticed. So if your going to the game, now would be the perfect time to have "The Machine"(or whatever the consensus name is) banners displayed throughout the AT@T center. Someone is bound to catch on.
It's all in a gimmick Spur fans, but as Bruce would say... "It is what it is."

you are boring when complaining that it's boring when spurs fans complain that the spurs are not boring. in fact, i'm boring when i complain that you are boring. if you respond to me and say that i am boring, that will be boring too. did we need a thread for this? it's much too boring to discuss.

It's boring to be boring, which of course makes it boring, and creates a never ending cycle of boredom leading to a deep dark pit of boredom from which there is no escape. You can't even escape if you die, since what can be more boring than laying in a box for all eternity.
Hence there is no hope, which makes sense, since hope is not boring and has no place in the Cycle of Boredom.

An ABC interview show spends time this weekend with the engaging San Antonio Spur who is known as one of the major three in the team's playoff run, Manu Ginobili.
“NBA Access With Ahmad Rashad,” at noon Saturday (on KSAT here), continues its behind-the-scenes coverage of the opening round of the playoffs with a special segment on Ginobili, the newly crowned Sixth Man of the Year. Ginobili talks about his career and how he does what he can to bring even more energy to the team.
NBA spokeswoman Francine Winiker shared some quotes.
On his development as a player, Ginobili said: “When I was 12 or 13, I knew I wanted to be a pro basketball player, because my brothers were pros and I wanted to be like them, but I realized I had a real chance when I was about 17.” He also talked about what it means to him to play with and against the tops in the NBA. “Any time you play against the best, it automatically improves your skills,” he said. “So the fact of coming to the NBA and playing against the Kobe Bryants, Allen Iversons or with the Tim Duncans really made me take another step forward in my career.”
