He was talking about visiting the lower 48 contiguous states, of which he was trying to say that he had gotten to 47 out of 48 of them.

I speak pretty good german, and modern german pronounces the "ie" and "ei" dipthongs completely opposite of modern english, and THAT gives me a world of hurt when it comes to words like "receipt" and so forth.
