It's a toss up between this year and 2006. Of course we lost in 2006 so that one probably wins.
Phoenix series: We only won game 1 on a Finley clutch shot to send it into OT and Tim Duncan's highly lucky 3-pt. shot to send it into double OT, still only win that game by 2 vs. Phoenix. It could've been 4-1 Phoenix but we pulled it out.
New Orleans series: No need to explain this one.
I can't think of any harder first two rounds for the Spurs.

2005 was no joke either.
i still remember that damn midget boykins.
yeah this would be hardest road to championship if we make it.
Toughest Teams these playoffs besides Spurs:
1. Lakers
2. Hornets
3. Pistons
4. Suns
5. Celtics
to get to championship we would need to beat 4 of the top 5 teams. that is sick!!!!
Pop said last year was hardest because of all the drama. But this year is even harder because of the compe ion level.
It would be awesome to get this done.
Spurs have never had a first-round opponent like the Suns. They probably would have reached the WCF in the other bracket.
The Hornets just gave the Spurs the hardest 7-game series they've ever won. (Well, maybe the 2005 Piston series was harder.)
If the Spurs make it to the Finals, they will have played, hands down, 4 of the top six teams in the league. (The other two being the Spurs and the loser of the ECF.) Subject to review, I would argue that it's the hardest path to an NBA le ever.

Not only was this the most difficult first two rounds in Spurs history, there's a case for it being the most difficult first two rounds in NBA history.
Even though Phoenix only lasted five games, those were five really tough games. Game one was one for the ages.
Game one was the freaking series. If the Spurs lost that, it would have gone seven, and not sure which way.
Hold on, what about Boston winning two clutch seven-game series, huh?
This is certainly up there with one of the toughest roads to the Finals ever.
Last year's was tough too - but this one is tougher. But the 2005 road was also hard. I imagine this year's finals could be as tough as that one was - and a repeat of Detroit-Spurs - going all the way to a game 7 again.
Really, it's never been as easy as it was back in 1999, has it?
Against teams they should have handled in 4-5 games. Esp Atlanta. Please.
Boston has been exposed as having some serious weaknesses, and I think Detroit will exploit those.
And I'm in Boston. They're my team after the Spurs.
The Meltics are a joke... Can't wait for Detroit to tear them up.
So would the toughest road ever = the greatest champions ever? That'd be even bigger than getting the repeat.
Definitevely, this series are very tough. The toughest of all time for the Spurs.
A few peeps need to reboot their sarcasm detector and then read Shoog's post again.
Yeah definitely, IMO.
If the Spurs knock off Phoenix (built to beat them), Hornets (upcoming power with arguable MVP), Lakers (MVP and PJax), and then either Boston or Detroit (Boston would have more media luster) on their way to a repeat, it would peg that critics meter at zero forever.
i agree wholeheartedly. i dont ever remember a repeat being this difficult for any team at any time in NBA history. the spurs definetly have thier work cut out for them. if they can get thru this at least to the Finals, that would have to be one of the most amazing accomplishments in NBA history. And if they were to repeat they are considered a DYNASTY no doubt.
Interesting that the Spurs have had to play the 3 teams in the West that at one time had the best record in the West at one time and in that order. First Phoenix was the early leader, then New Orleans had it at the break, then the Lakers grabbed the lead down the stretch.
And if they make it to Finals, they will have to play another team that had the best record in the league.
Tough road to hoe.
Exactly
The Suns were basically a 60+ win team that suffered losses during the transition time after the Shaq trade. The Hornets were probably the best team in the Western Conference during the regular season for a majority of the season. Not only do I think these Hornets could come out of the East, they were probably a top 5-7 team the Spurs have played in the Tim Duncan Era.
Huh? My sarcasm decoder just rolled over and died... This statement makes my brain hurt after not sleeping much this past week with all the playoff action!
Edit: I just realized that "the other two" referred to the 2 that the Spurs didn't play. Thought you were referring to the 2 others left to play on the schedule (Lakers + ECF winner)
Must.....
sleep....
