Tom Orsborn: Pop wants Kobe sent overseas

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Another question Gregg Popovich has tired of is: What can you do differently to stop Kobe Bryant?

"We could try to have him redirected, like sent to Spain for a couple of weeks or something like that, you know," the coach joked at shootaround this morning. "That would help us stop him. Other than that, we will just do our best. But he is the best, so it is a difficult task."

So difficult that three Spurs - Bruce Bowen, Ime Udoka and Manu Ginobili - failed miserably to check him in the second half of Game 1.

"I think Bruce did the best job of the three obviously," Popovich said. "But Kobe is not going to be stopped. He's a scorer."

Tom Orsborn: Should old Pop sweat or rest?

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A reporter opened this morning's media session with Gregg Popovich by asking him what he would ask himself today. Pop played along, saying, "Am I going to work out today or not? That's my big question. The older you get, the harder it gets, you know. The coach is old too. Everybody's old. It's an old organization."

Guess he read Mark Heisler's column today in the Los Angeles Times that included a headline that read, "Silver Spurs: The aging team is at a pivotal point, in series against Lakers and in general. Old-school served (the Spurs) well but may have reached limit."

Popovich, actually, seems bored by the whole age discussion surrounding his team, which is the league's oldest.

"If we win, we are experienced and really great," he said. "If we lose, we are older than dirt. It's been the same story for three or four years. We'll just stick with that mantra."

Tom Orsborn: Spurs ready for AARP membership?

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The Spurs awoke this morning to a headline in the Los Angeles Times that labeled them "Silver Spurs."

That's silver as in silver haired.

The headline was for a column by NBA beat writer Mark Heisler, one of the best in the business, about how the Spurs' dynasty is at the crossroads because of the team's advanced average age. Heisler pointed out that the Spurs, with nine of their 10 rotation players aged 30 or older and five 35 or older, may be the oldest team ever to go this deep in the playoffs. According to Heisler, "the average age of the 1968-69 Celtics' rotation players who won Bill Russell's last le was 31. The 11 Spurs who played in Game 1 averaged 33."

Said Bruce Bowen: "I think that's a credit to the old guys here. Our 'center' back in San Antonio will be really proud of us that we have been able to do something like this." When none of the media laughed, Bowen said, "Get it? Center? Retirement center? I guess it's not going well."
