Most of the greatest thinkers of our time were atheist, I believe once you reach a certain intellectual level you realize that belief of a supreme being that bases your destiny on a system of right and wrong is foolish. every religion is ed up catholics butt little boys, muslims blow people up, mormons keep sex slaves and whatever

I'm an atheist, but religion has shaped culture, for better or worse. No doubt that religion caused bloodshed and unnecessary violence, as well as wars. However, recognizing the fact that we are just advanced animals is potentially highly dangerous to a civilization in the same way as acknowledging or preaching a higher power.
The best thing for people to be are humanists: keeping ethics and moral values in a balanced equation without resorting to a tired Heaven vs. practice/condemning condition is what we need to do to advance our sciences, knowledge and still keep us distinguished from our primeval ancestors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanism for those curious.
But yeah, for the most part, religion, particularly the Christian type is extremely hypocritical and full of so many contradictories and unbelievable cir stances that it should be taken with a grain of salt for the intelligible. Religion isn't exactly the problem, it's a lot to do with the people that push it.
