Top U.S. General: 15,000 Insurgents Killed or Caught
    By Gideon Long

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. and Iraqi forces have killed or captured 15,000 people over the past year in their fight against an insurgency ravaging Iraq, the commander of U.S. forces in the country said Wednesday.

In the past month alone, they had seized around 60 leaders of the various Islamist and Baathist groups trying to drive the Americans from the war-torn country, General George Casey said.

Speaking on the deadliest day for U.S. troops since the invasion in 2003, Casey said the insurgency was limited to just four of Iraq's 18 provinces.

But he conceded that the number of car and suicide bombs had increased and that Iraqi security forces were not capable of dealing with the violence themselves.

    ...

"The level of violence in 14 of the 18 provinces in Iraq is four incidents or arrests a day," said Casey, who commands 150,000 U.S. troops. "It is primarily confined to four provinces. It has not spread to 80 percent of the population."

He said the level of violence had subsided since its peak in November last year -- the deadliest month for U.S. troops since the campaign to oust Saddam Hussein began.

Hey, wait a minute. Weren't there initially only 2,000-3,000 insurgents? Where did the additional 12,000 insurgents come from?

    Let's do some math...

    # of "insurgents" claimed killed (or captured) by US:..... 15,000

    # of American lives lost (killed or wounded) over:.......... 15,000

    # (conservative) of innocent Iraqi civilians killed by US:.. 100,000

    # (estimated) of insurgents (or sympathizers) in Iraq:...... 200,000

    # of WMD found, (nuclear, "nucular", biological, chem):...... 0.0

    # of REAL threats to America neutralized in Iraq:............... 0.0

Cost(so far) Over and Above the Military Budget: $ 200,000,000,000.00

That comes out to $13,334 dollars per insurgent!

YEAH! the bush*/republicans sure got a great deal for America!

Are you really "doing math" by simply stating estimates of numbers?

If it's good enough for helping determine if there was exit poll fraud then why shouldn't it be good enough for me?

Yeah, that's a great comparrison you got there. Exit-polls being estimates themselves and all, you have no grounds to stand on. I'm not mad, everyone around me is crazy!

Travis, there's not much in that post that could be considered a lie. Trash Dan all you want, but the numbers are there.

Whether you think they are justified numbers or not is another quetion, but it's not a lie.

Those numbers are estimates. I will give you that they are educated estimates. I'm not saying +/- dead is a good thing either.

Manny, when someone pulls numbers from a proven unreliable source, does no homework to substantiate the numbers, and does both of the above knowingly...sorry, that's a lie.

You are free to disagree, of course...but that's not my problem.

Which of those numbers are unrealiable? Those actually do look like pretty conservative numbers to me.

First, note how he states American lives lost, his waffling following that statement notwithstanding.

The other two numbers are high.

I've seen lots of estimates near those 2 numbers, and lots above them. What would you consider approriate estimates?

    Innocent civilians...30,000 tops.

Insurgents + sympathizers...50,000 as a high value, 75,000 just to be safe.

How do you determine any of the classifications for any of these statistics? It's rediculous out side of knowing how many US troops were killed. Do the terrorists wear special colors to signify they are terrorists? Just the numbers of dead are estimates in and of themselves.
