Could Richard Jefferson Become A Laker?
    Jun 20, 2008 4:48 PM EST

It's obvious that the Lakers need to make some adjustments following their disappointing loss to the Celtics in the Finals, and Dave D'Alessandro of the Star-Ledger believes Richard Jefferson might help solve their problems.

Assuming that Lamar Odom is the odd man out, Los Angeles could trade the forward to New Jersey for a package that includes Jefferson.

The teams can not agree to a one-for-one swap under the rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement though, because Odom's contract expires next season and Jefferson has three years and nearly $43 million owed to him.

I wouldn't do this trade, Odom's been playing out of position for so long. Hes not a PF and everyone knows it, I love his game but I think his jumper is becoming his biggest flaw. If he can improve his shooting during the offseason he will be even better imo

The problem with Odom is his versatility. We don't need a jack-of-all trades kind of player on this team. We need someone who can come into the SF spot and play hard nosed defense and shoot well enough from the field to give proper spacing.

Odom's defense is average at the SF spot, his shooting is barely average, and his rebounding and interior strengths will be minimized at the SF position. It's not about getting equal talent back for Odom, it's about finding pieces that fit.

James Posey. Too bad everyone in the NBA wants his services.

I would laugh my ass off if the Lakers made this trade and at the same time write off their hopes for a championship for the next five years.

Its feast or famine with Odom. Sometimes he's so good playing out of position that he's looking like an all star caliber player. He just needs to be consistent and dedicated to what he's doing...OR probably, he's just confused on what his role should be since he can play in so many positions. he was a point forward one time, post player, facilitator and sometimes even a go to guy on mismatches.

Jefferson won't do anything to space the floor, but he's not going to be making the huge mistakes Odom did... ie., leaving Prince on that gamewinner in Detroit, leaving Nowitzki open to let him force OT, etc.

New Jersey wouldn't do this trade...unless Odom comes with Bryant. Jefferson is their best man as of now and to trade him for Odom would be a disaster. NJ already has enough money to go for a quality player - and it's certainly not Odom.

    ^Sigh. Do your HW kid.

NJ is looking to clear capspace right now for Le-Plan in '10. Odom's K is attractive since it expires after next season unlike RJ's which goes on for at least 3 more years IIRC. If they move RJ it has nothing to do with them wanting equal talent back.

They're not using Jefferson to clear space for LeBron in 2010; they've already done that. Trading Jefferson for an expiring deal ensures they'll have money to go after Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, or Amare Stoudemire in addition to James in 2010.
