Like in the NFL when Oakland traded Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay for draft picks and cash?

Even if it's not technically a "trade", can Team A ask Team B for compensation in the form of players, draft pics and/or cash. (Oakland got 8 million cash in addition to the draft picks.)

The Heat received compensation from the Orlando Magic in the form of a 2nd round pick when the Magic signed Stan Van Gundy, who was still under contract with the Heat. Don't remember a similar incident at the moment...

39th pick of 2007 and option of swapping spots in R1 this year is what Orlando gave the Miami Heat for Stan Van.

If accurate, from USA today article:
But when the Magic and Heat reached a deal — Orlando will send the 39th pick of the NBA draft to the Heat and give Miami the option of swapping first-round selections in 2008 — it allowed Orlando to hire the only other coach it interviewed.

Wonder what the Spurs could get for Popavich?

The NBA has approved the Los Angeles Clippers' acquisition of coach Doc Rivers in a deal with the Boston Celtics, a league source confirmed to ESPNBoston.com's Jackie MacMullan.
The league's approval, according to the source, means that the official announcement of the deal currently is in the hands of the two teams.

    More From ESPN.com

Sources confirmed on Sunday that the Clippers will sign Rivers to a three-year contract worth $21 million. The Celtics, who agreed to release Rivers from the remaining three years and $21 million remaining on his current contract, will receive a 2015 first-round draft pick as compensation in the deal.
