Cadets Stumble Upon Rape At Woodlawn Park
Several cadets training for the Bexar County Sheriff's Department got some true on-the-job training as they watched their instructors take down a man they say was raping a woman.
The rescue happened at Woodlawn Lake Park, just West of Downtown Wednesday morning.
Deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff's Department had just arrived with their cadets for training when they heard screams coming from the men's restroom.
"We had a female that was screaming," explained Bexar COunty Training Instructor Joseph Canales. "She was totally nude, so we ran to investigate and upon arrival, she was fighting with a male."
Canales and his training partner noticed the 48-year-old suspect was armed with a knife.
"We told him 'drop the knife, drop the knife'. And when he didn't do that, I pulled my service weapon," said Bexar County Training Instructor Frank Guajardo.
The two men then did what they'd been training their cadets to do.
"He wanted to lunge toward us with the knife and we took control of the situation, took him down, handcuffed him, and waited for county to come and help us out," Canales explained.
News 4's crew confronted the suspect.
News 4's Kristina De Leon: "Were you raping that woman?"
Suspect: "No, ma'am. I tried to, uh, I went inside and trying to take a...use the restroom, and she came out screaming."
However, deputies believe the blood stains created when the woman hit her head on the rock wall and her cries for help tell a different story.
"This could have gone on, and no one could have possibly heard it or seen it," said Bexar County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Sgt. Chris Burc .
The cadet's physical fitness training class possibly saved the woman's life.
"It was not even a reaction., It was an action, you know. That's what I tell the cadets all the time, you know. You don't have time to react on the situation. You have to act on it. And that's what we did. We acted on the situation to help this female out, cause she was in trouble," Canales told News 4.
The 48-year-old suspect now faces a number of charges, including aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault. His bond was set at more than $700,000.
The cadets were sent back to the academy for the day.
