we might not have a NOLA tommarow night at this time....

I think the northside of the city will be ok. Thats mainly what got flooded last time. They'll have wind damage all through the city without a doubt, but the surge hitting the places on the West Bank is what is going to really do a number.

I don't know though, maybe the north part of the city gets fucked too. It sucks either way.

Water is splashing over the Industrial Street Canal, and CNN is reporting a breach of a canal in the 9th ward. Said the water has breached at the base of the levee and flooding is occurring.

The big problem now is if the water erodes the base then the levee is bound to cave in sooner or later, and when it does that whole area is going to flood again.

The water is just splashing over over the Industrial Canal right now, so things seem okay for now.

But the levee over by the 9th ward that they are reporting a breach of stands at 14'. If that craters, you've got 14' of water pouring into the lower 9th ward.

Back to my original question, how strong is a cat 2? is NOLA still in danger of being erased?

To answer the first question:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml
Category Two Hurricane:
Winds 96-110 mph (83-95 kt or 154-177 km/hr). Storm surge generally 6-8 feet above normal. Some roofing material, door, and window damage of buildings. Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some trees blown down. Considerable damage to mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers. Coastal and low-lying escape routes flood 2-4 hours before arrival of the hurricane center. Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings. Hurricane Frances of 2004 made landfall over the southern end of Hutchinson Island, Florida as a Category Two hurricane. Hurricane Isabel of 2003 made landfall near Drum Inlet on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane.

Gustav is definately a serious hurricane but I am glad that he did not gain the strength that was possible with the warm waters of the GOM. NOLA did not suffer a direct hit, BUT time will tell the extent of damage. Water rolls downhill and in the case...it will roll down stream. Storm surge is pushing water up and in, the heavy rainfall in the area will push flood waters down and out. Folks, it is far from over....

Here's to hoping Gustav takes it easy, man!

I'd be surprised if there is major damage to either the French Quarter or the Garden District. Both of the cities most historic areas survived Katrina relatively unscathed, and I'd imagine they'll be okay here, too.

The thing that the hurricanes have really shown, I think, is how crappy building practices/craftsmanship has become over the years -- the emphasis is build a lot of cheap houses to make the maximum profit, rather than spending more money to build something that's engineered to last. New Orleans' geographical features exaggerate the situation, of course, but if you look at suburbs and sprawl areas throughout the country there are just way too many houses being built where people really shouldn't live.

It also depends on how the pump system functions this time. Floods can be survived if the water goes away relatively quickly, as was the case in the Quarter during Katrina. The reason the damage was so extensive last time is not because there was flooding, but because those houses just sat in water for days and days.

One of the faults found after Katrina was that the levies weren't sunk deep enough. When the ground gets super saturated, the water can force it's way underneath, and undermine the levy. Instant failure and flood.

I don't think it's "seeping". It would look more like a large spring forming, with the water sort of "fountaining" up.

To address CNN's water under the levy thing, one of the NO news stations said that the report was false, that further investigation concluded it was water coming up from a storm drain.

Still a problem as that water is obviously coming from somewhere, but it's not as bad as hearing that a levee is failing.

Aggie Hoopsfan

Thank you.

You know I wonder what exact improvements they made to the levees. I know they were only like 20 percent done with the entire project but that seems like something pretty important to work on first.

The main failure in Katrina was that as the water came over the levees, there was just earth backing up the levees so it eroded the earth on the backside of the levee until it couldn't support the wall any longer and the wall collapsed backwards.

Basically, they are redoing all the levees by putting several feet of concrete at the base on the front and back of the levee walls, so the water that tops the levees is coming down onto solid concrete and not dirt/grass.

Showing video of the Industrial Street Canal. Wind is blowing water up against the west side of the canal and its levee. East side levee wall doesn't even have water against it, that's how hard the wind is blowing.

But later as the storm moves on the wind is going to shift around and blowing west to east, and put that water against the other levee wall.... which only has earthen backing, no concrete reinforcement.

Those photos were as of about 12 today though. More recent news:

In a sign of a subsiding surge and easing winds, waves are no longer sloshing over the western side of the Industrial Canal floodwall at the Claiborne Avenue bridge in New Orleans, according to multiple witnesses.

Still, water continues to slosh over the top of the wall closer to the lake, near Florida Avenue.

The subsiding water closer to the river is leaving a field of debris along the sides of the canal.

The question of whether storm waters would become a torrent over the west wall has posed a day-long emergency analysis situation for Army Corps of Engineers officials.

Bummer.

Being reported on New Orleans TV that an imminent breaking of the Plaquemines levee is set to occur.

Estimated to flood 200 homes, not go into the city, but no guarantees.

Oh come on...CNN doesn't report rumors. Only Fox News does that.

Hanna is suppose to make landfall near Savannah. Also, some images on Ike:

Doesn't look too bad to me. I'd say the evacuation was unnecessary.

They got lucky in 2 ways.

1. Look at the radar loops of when it came ashore. It was trending to NOLA all fucking night, then 2 hours before landfall It veers almost DIRECTLY west. Huge wobble to the west saved them a lot of damage. A lot.

2. I didn't have en environment to ever ramp up again. Its so hard to tell how strong these storms are going to get and this one had a lot of good ingredients. I'd say 70% of the time storms with this path in the Gulf will it easy to grow in size. Gustav never got its act together which is great. Also, recon found concentric eye walls shortly before landfall. It was starting an Eye wall replacement cycle which weakened it even further.

All of that good luck on their side, and NOLA still almost saw those levees overtopped. They got lucky. And its a good thing they did, but to say it was not necessary to evacuate ignores so much common sense and what happened last time.

Its a slow fucking season right?

Those models that showed four storms active in the Atlantic basin are pretty much right on. That area right behind Ike will probably develop.

My biggest worry about this is that people will say this wasn't bad and won't evacuate next time and then get nailed.

There still seems to be some concern about several levees possibly failing this evening, Jindal is talking about extraordinarly high tides throughout the evening.

And imagine if Gustav had not moved at the last minute and if it had not went through an eye replacement at the last minute. Those levees would have been gone right now most likely. Good thing Gustav did what it did (for New Orleans). Baton Rouge and Lafayette are getting hit a lot harder though.

Did you not see those levees earlier today? had Gustav not did what it did, they would have been breached, easily.

Uh, yeah.

If Gustav hadn't jogged slightly west right before landfall, all those levees that were getting overtopped today would have had a couple of feet of water flowing over them.

There's still flooding in the 9th ward. Talk about ignorance.
