Dogg Pound Gangsta, would you rather Manu be in a Satanic cult and have avoided the question or be atheist and answer the question as he did? Pick one.

Thanks.

:stirpot:

I would rather him be a good person no matter what he believes. I do not even care that he answered the question personally. I just caught me off guard that he even decided to answer it on a public forum when he can pick and choose what questions to answer.

I am using common sense. It is called using parallels. Josh Howard is a famous person, so is Manu. They both play in the NBA. They both discussed sensitive subjects on public forums. They both opened themselves up. Just because one may be "worse" than the other does not mean they have nothing in common.

I think you analyze things too much.

DPG21920
10-12-2008, 05:29 PM
Then why should he follow his " I'm not a believer" with " that doesn't mean I'm right and you are wrong. I respect all religions"?

Because if you are deciding to open yourself up, you must be careful not to offend anyone. People have to be ultra "PC" these days, it sucks, but it just is that way. I do not think he gave a bad answer, I just was surprised he even answered it. "Do you watch DVD's? Yes I do", "Do you use TIVO? In the USA I do, but not in Argentina", "Do you believe in God?, No, I do not believe". See how it does not fit. It just surprised me.

Something being a sensitive subject by nature, doesn't mean that every comment about it will get the same level of reaction, positive or negative. I would say that I disagree with your argument that the thread is what it is because of the nature of the subject. At least, not entirely.

I agree. I never said that he would be crucified (no pun intended) for it. I just though it was odd that he would be so open because most people that are famous are not.

DPG21920
10-12-2008, 05:31 PM
No, but you're kind of stretching the importance of the parallels in this particular instance. Howard's comments, and the way in which they were stated, are far more inflammatory and likely to cause outrage than the way in which Manu stated his.

I agree. Does not mean that Manu's comments could not cause some stink. I was not even trying to come off like I thought he really messed up. I was just saying I would be surprised if he was that honest. Then shit blew up.

Guys, what is the problem?
He doesn't kill anyone, ...Should he hide his thoughts in this mater? why?
He simply say , like many young people in Argentina, and many people in earth, that he is not a believer.
Give me a break!I think that it is thousand times worst to be a believer of those who lies to takes you to kill each other (war).

That didn't answer the question . . .

If you are implying that someone is in a satanic cult and killing people than obviously being an atheist and answering the question is far greater because no one would get hurt. He might catch some flack, but that would not mean he is a bad person.

I do not care what he BELIEVES as long as he is a good person in the way he ACTS. I think Manu is a very good person no matter what (from the little that I know about him). All I was saying was that the question caught me off guard and I was surprised he choose to answer it.

No question. It should not be a big deal, but too often people try to oppress others that do not believe what they do. Just like you are not supposed to discuss religion or politics over dinner, I just thought it was weird he answered that question considering all of the other questions were so light-hearted.

Thanks for the translation. This is too funny:

What car do you own these days? How much did it cost?
I'd rather not talk about it.

Do you remember your worst drunkenness? When and where? How do you ended up?
Jeje What a delicate matter. I think it was celebrating a championship in Italy but, coincidentally enough, I don't remember very well! ;-)

He won't talk about his car or being drunk because it is "delicate". LMFAO

I'm going to tell you that's a very common thing here in the US, but back down south, that whole 'being politically correct' stuff carries a lot less weight. Maybe it's a cultural thing.

I am saying that because in today's day in age with all the media coverage and how fast things can spread because of the internet, you must really be careful when discussing things that people view as sensitive.

I get what you were saying. But that is a whole other argument about religion. This was about being surprised that someone would answer a "delicate" question such as religion in such a light-hearted forum and then decline to answer about cars and drinking.

The thing here is that most argentinians don't care about other's religion as many americans do, I mean... if you are famous and decide to openly declare yourself catholic, atheist, jewish... that is a personal deal...and something that won't really change the general perception of an "idol" such as Manu, that's also why he speaks so freely about his beliefs.

I agree with that. Like I said, my original post was not to make this seem like he crossed a line or royally messed up. I was just saying in the context of the questions, that the God question just seemed out of place. I have said that maybe I am overstating how much religion is a hot topic, but lame asses like Newton turn this in to an "Americans have the right to the 1st amendment" bull shit that comes from left field because he/she wants to sound smart. Just like when they started a "who is the smartest poster thread" and he tried to throw his own name into the hat. This person is looking for something bigger out of a Spurs forum.

Your half-assed, swiss cheese theories have been thoroughly destroyed. Mister Sinister, Obstructed View, timvp, et. al. have so completely debunked your bullshit, yet you keep paddling, hoping for that one last breath.

Your responses are consistently contradictory, repetitive, or change the topic completely. Your analogies could only make a thread of sense in a parallel universe.

You are just not a bright fellow. Let it go, for the love of ____.

This is just not true. What's so sensitive about responding to somebody that asks you what your beliefs are?
And saying everybody view the sole act of stating your beliefs as 'sensitive' is a gross generalization. As a matter of fact, in this entire place, you seem to be the only one 'surprised' that he did.

Because getting into what car he drives can be construed as 'showing off'. It will take away from who he is, very humble, down to earth person. The drunk part he did answer, and he actually laughed about it. I don't think he thought as a delicate subject at all.

Judging someone that you do not know from one discussion makes you appear as the most unintelligent person on here. You do not know me at all, my educational background or my takes on anything other than this. The fact that you like to hear yourself talk (1st amendment this, 1st amendment that) and are just as repetitive as I am makes you a hypocrite.

Just because you grossly misinterpreted what I was saying and turned it into a wild argument does not make me a bad debater. It means you have poor reading comprehension.

I'm going to try to explain a bit from somebody from Argentina that reads that. Hopefully you'll bear with me and try to understand.

He didn't mean the 'delicate' in that quote. Believe me. We say that when we talk about a topic like that (drunk, easy girls, etc) because of the significant other (:lol).

About the car, you need to understand the context. A BMW, Audi, even a Benz is a complete rarity in Argentina. He's currently engaged in building a stadium in his native city, Bahia Blanca, where the government promised to pay 50% of it, and where Manu's sponsors are paying for the other half. He's already been criticized (unjustly in my opinion) because he's not footing the bill for the whole thing. The last thing he needs is some radio show coming out and saying "Well, he could sell the BMW and the Audi and pay for the whole thing" (critique like that already happened, BTW).

I'll tell you a little story that happened to me personally. I actually happen to drive a Benz and a Jeep (wife's car). My dad had the very, very stupid idea of telling my neighbors that we own those. When I went to visit last month, all my neighbors would ask me about were the Benz and the 4x4 (that's what they call SUV's over there). It was really uncomfortable. And this is El Nono, not Manu Ginobili.

You said the last he needs is some radio guy saying sell the BMW...Same for the radio guy or religious nut saying that he should believe in God. See what I mean. I think Manu is a very good guy. I have no problem with his beliefs. I was just surprised he did not do with the God question what he did with the car question. That is it. Everyone else turned this into a religious beliefs debate. That was not at all what I meant. Just surprised, nothing else.

Not really. If anything, the bigot is the radio guy. I mean, I've lived for 12+ years in the USA, both west coast and east coast. My wife is Texan and my fathers-in-law live in Texas. And honestly, I don't find alarming at all that somebody says what he believes in. I would say you're opening a can of worms if you go on a discourse of why your belief is what it is. And I'm sure Manu wouldn't go there.
As far as Argentina goes, religion is a NON issue whatsoever. Same with race, when compared to the USA.

It's unclear exactly what Hitler believed. Many Christians like to use the "Hitler was an atheist" as an argument for the need for God in one's life, but Hitler was quoted on many occasions (particularly in his book, Mein Kampf) as citing God as a motivating factor in his life.

It seems clear that Hitler was not an atheist, but that doesn't mean he believes in the Judeo-Christian God. Guy was a loon.

MANU RESPONDE AL FORO

Gonzaspurs

VioletChina
Do you remember that in Nanjing a chinese girl with a No.20 jersey gave you a hand-written book with a blue and white color which is made by your Chinese Fans Club? If you still keep it,can you tell us what you think of it? We really want to know
Yes, I do remember and I do kept it. I really appreciated it. Thanks a lot for your support!

BigBigSpur
Do you still keep close touch with Pepe? When you feel down or he feels down, will you two call each other to confide your frustration?
Not that close this last year. We usually spend time together during the boreal summer since we leave really close from each other and we are friends. But because of the Olympics we barely saw each other this time.

Many people criticize you for your presence in Olympics. Have Tim said anything like “I will always on your side” to you? And after your surgery, does Tim show a great concern or does he come to visit you frequently?
It wasn’t needed. He’s a great guy and he understands me. He did came to visit me, too.

Last time you said you like “Fucsia”. It means pink, purple, or violet red?
Is easier to ask Manu than go to Wikipedia, right? Or any other dictionary? Anyways, it was a joke that Fucsia was my favorite color.

Chasky

Asababy
I am a chinese fan , it's a pity that i can't go to the stadium to see your games , you'd said that you had a good experience in China , so if possible do you intend to come to China again ? If so ,which places do you want to visit more?
I loved my experience in China during the Olympics, but I’m not planning on going again soon. I’d like to visit Shanghai one day.

Mar

Me afecciono a mis computadoras.

Romy_013
Shook me all night Long y Back in Black de ACDC también.

¿A qué juegos?

No vi a ninguno todavía.

Cesar421
Honestamente…

Tengo muchas acumuladas.

carina_ginomania,
Most important question: how are you? How is your recovery going? Any updates on when you can be back on the court to practice?
I’m doing very good. Getting better every day. Little bit at time. No idea when I’ll be able to practice with the guys, but I still have a couple weeks to go for that at least.

Are you going to make HEB commercials with the Spurs again? Who will replace Brent?
I’ll be in the HEB commercials and there’s no substitute for Brent. Tim, Bruce and me. We’ll miss him. “Mango trees don’t do that, Manu”! ;-)

Did Brent also send you a text message with a picture of him and Luis, saying that he has finally found an Argentine teammate that he likes?
How did you know? Yes, it’s true. He did it because he misses me!

The Express News reported that the Spurs had a yoga session after practice last week. Did you see your teammates doing it? Have you ever tried yoga before?
We did it twice. We ALL did it. I’ve done it once before, but I’m not big fan of it.

No tengo idea!

No tengo estilo aún! Je je. No lo pude identificar! Y no!

Creo que a Steve Kerr hasta Pop “schooled him” in practice!

Hope you are healing just fine and getting ready to mentally play what you do best. Like I've mentioned before I've been a Rocket fan most of my life and most recently I became a Manu Ginobili fan (dummy me I waited too long) and honestly I hope you can forgive me for not being a Spur fan.
Okay, here is my question....Is there any chance on earth I could possibly get a picture of you & Scola at a Spurs & Rockets game? I know I might be asking for too much, but well, you never know. If your answer is yes, I will wear a shirt with both Rockets and Spurs on it. You won't miss me. Please, please say "yes".

I’ll do my best to make it happen and remember. But is not that easy since the locker rooms are on opposite ends of the courts

There is nothing "wrong" with it. If that is what you believe, that is what you believe. God gave everyone the choice to have free will and choose for themselves. I am saying someone as smart as Manu, even though he might not believe would be more careful choosing his words in a public forum. Just like there is nothing wrong with saying you hate the National Anthem because America gives you the choice, does not mean there is not a time and place to make your opinions known in a palatable way.

In argentina, the worst criminals of the military repression were all very religious people who used to go to church every sunday.
Religion is not a guarantee of honesty, dignity or morality, and many times (see the newspapers) is a social disguise where to hide the trash.

Well here's an exaggeration if I've ever seen one. Audi, Benz, BMW are as rare here as you make them out to be.

I don't really think it is contradictory. I'm an staunch atheist, but I still say "oh my god" when I'm surprised, or "goddamnit" when I'm frustrated. It's just idiomatic usage. I don't even think about it when I do it. I don't have to believe in blessings to reflexively say "bless you" when someone sneezes.
Exactly, I'm as atheist as they come, but although I try to avoid them I often find myself using those expressions (their spanish counterparts, of course). They are culturally imprinted on people and shouldn't be taken exclusively as a statement of faith.

Saludos.

Well here's an exaggeration if I've ever seen one. Audi, Benz, BMW are as rare here as you make them out to be.

Well, I was there last month. Outside of Puerto Madero, Palermo and Devoto, I can count the amount of BMW's, Benz and Audis I saw with ONE hand. I actually remember seeing just ONE Mercedes (a 300E) in an entire week I spent in Mar del Plata.

I mean, in the parking lot right outside this apartment complex, which is not in any rich neighborhood at all, there are 2 BMW's 325, my old Benz, another Benz CLK, a Porsche Boxter, an old Porsche 911, an Audi A8 and an Audi TT.

Let's put in the number of dealerships... when I tried to show my cousin the Mercedes SLK that one of our customers have (which is sick), I looked up where there was an official Mercedes dealer, and there was only one for the entire Capital Federal in Puerto Madero (They're also the the official Jeep dealers). When I went there, they didn't even have the car. They told me it's too expensive and they only import it on a special order.

Yes. That is how I talk to people and I have a lot of friends that are not Christians. We discuss things like this and get along just fine. I was just commenting on the old adage "you don't discuss politics or religion over dinner" type deal. I have no beef with what he said or how he said it though. I just thought it was little odd to see such direct honesty to fans on a subject that I thought was sensitive. Sometimes that refreshing honesty gets famous people in trouble and opens the doors to more privacy invasion and judgments.

So you simply commented out of concern for how Manu would be portrayed? If that's it, it is okay. Nobody whose opinion he cares about will think of him differently.

I believe Hitler was Christian, no?

Atheism is a little different.

I could have told you all DPG was an idiot a long time ago.

Do you know me Manny? Ask the people that met me at the gtg if they thought I was an idiot.

I in no way, shape or form said people "should shut up in the name of pc". I said I was surprised he gave such an honest answer in a public forum. I said it caught me off guard because the other questions were so light-hearted. That is all. You are making up shit that I said and blowing things out of context because it is a sensitive subject that you misinterpreted.

This is not about his beliefs at all or mine or yours. This is strictly about a PR thing. That is it. I did not even think it was a big deal when I made my first comments and then a bunch of people started interpreting and reading into what I said without asking for clarification.

The Hitler reference was made to someone's obscure point that had nothing to do with my original point. They were trying to argue about judgments (which I never judged Manu) and I took it to an extreme to prove a point that if one person has the right to believe, everyone does. You do not have the right to hurt others but you can say and believe what you will. You will have to suffer the consequences of your words. I clearly said Manu is in no way like the KKK or Hitler.

For those of you talking shit. I am sure you would say stuff like that to peoples faces.

That is exactly what I was trying to say with my first post (to a certain degree). If you look back at all my post, I tried to say it was not about religious beliefs or right or wrong. I was just surprised (do to the nature of the questions before that one) that he would open himself up so directly. That is all. Then a bunch of people started bringing up other issues that had nothing to do with what I said and attacked me on them. Then I had to defend myself against a bunch of things I did not say, but that I had opinions on in a different regard. I have typed this 100 times and I do not know why people do not get it.

You are not a very clever person. Everyone on here (especially you) has said a few things that people do not agree with, that people misinterpret and that people overlook. That does not make them idiots. Many people on here (including myself) have things they are very good at outside of posting on SpursTalk.

It is called comprehension. I said you would not say it in a way that you would be willing to get your ass beat. Where in there did I say I am going to beat your ass? I said there would be a difference in how you talk to people, even saying the same thing.

They told me it's too expensive and they only import it on a special order.

again, I don't know where you were, or whether you had your eyes closed, but I go to Puerto Madero every day, and there are BMW's everywhere, Benz although not as numerous are quite common, and Audis everywhere. You're either blind, or you're talking out of your ass.

P.S. Of course, we are talking about the richest section of Buenos Aires, so it really doesn't represent Argentina as a whole. I do believe you're exaggerating though, they are not as rare as you're making them out to be.

Ofcourse Puerto Madero is not reperesentative of Argentina. It's not even representative of 5% of the entire Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires alone.

They're such a common occurence that even you admit that you can only spot them basically in ONE neighborhood on THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

Thank you, you just made my point.

Edit: I've been to San Isidro and Martinez. Again, not representative of Argentina overall at all. I mean, you just need to take a look at General Paz or Panamericana and take a look. Ford, Peugeot, Fiat... That's common. Small cars in general. The rest is more or less a rarity.

Give me a fucking break! A Benz is not a rare sighting in Buenos Aires, anybody who has been here more than a fucking week knows this, a BMW and an Audi even less so. From your answer I can probably tell you've never been to San Isidro, or Acasuso, or Martinez or anywhere in Zona Norte for that matter. Now on a more serious note, and back to what I was saying, any of those cars (rare or not, so we don't upset our Argie friend here :LOL), still cost upwards of $50K new over there, but the difference is that there's basically no credit for purchasing cars over there, which means only the real rich people can afford them. I wonder if this question has been taken out of context.

As many have precluded, the English language is very unique in the way sentences are structured. I'm wondering, more or less if Manu takes the Einstein approach that God is more super-personal than personal.

As translated...

Autumn: Answer a question please! What meaning does God have in your life?
Manu: I am not Believing!

Therefore, by answering in such a way, Manu's comments do not commit him to a religion, or personal relationship with God, such as being a Christian.

Personally, if these statements are true, which I have no reason to believe otherwise, it is disappointing. As a Christian, I do care about the faith of other individuals. However, I also respect a person's right to choose as they see fit.

Well, I've been to Miami, Orlando, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, the Valley in South Texas, Portland, Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit and obviously Jersey, and I'd say with the exception of the Valley and Detroit, the rest are pretty representative. The trick is that all those brands here in the US are not substaintially more expensive that Volvo or Cadillac, or even compared to a good Honda car.

While I am personally saddened to learn that Gino is not a Christian, still I applaud Gino for answering the question and doing so, so honestly.

I don't take exception to people for having a lawful difference of opinion. I do have a problem with liars who hide their true feelings out of fear and/ or a hidden agenda.
Gino, to his credit, is not one of the latter.

DPG, you have made an ass of yourself.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way Manu answered the "Do you believe in God?" question. He was honest and susinct. "I am not a believer". And he left it at that.

I believe in God and have no issues with him saying what he said. I would've had issues with him doing what you want him to do, which is to lie or avoid the topic.

Smeagol, you have made an ass of yourself for not reading the 100 post (literally) where I said I HAVE NO PROBLEM THAT HE: 1) DOES NOT BELIEVE IN GOD 2) HOW HE ANSWERED THE QUESTION 3) HOW I WOULD NEVER WANT HIM TO LIE 4) HOW I APPRECIATE HONESTY.

All I said was that I am surprised how he answered so openly and honestly a question (because most famous people do not discuss such things with fans on a forum) considering the rest of the questions were so light-hearted. I figured he would go the route of the "CAR" question and just not answer it rather than invite people that much into his life and possibly take flack from fans and ... because of his beliefs.

Since faith is "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see"
(Hebrews 11:1), it has to be something that transends and is not dependent on mere human understanding.

Believing in something you do not see does not reconcile easily with humans' logic. Nonetheless, to do so is what God calls faith and is what He requires of believers.

I am a believer, but I decide not to get too caught up in the semantics. I look for what the bible is asking. I look for what rights do all people have as humans and the ones that match are the principles I follow. I figure acting like a good person and believing hurts no one. If I believe and live a good life, then die and nothing happens, I am no worse off. My life was not wasted because I can be proud of how I lived. The only reason I believe is because the true principles of the bible are good for everyone regardless if you believe in God or just in being a good person. I believe because I will never count out the fact that there are so many things in the universe we can not figure out.

Dude, you can back-pedal all you want but when this thread started, you were upset Manu answered a simple question (in his own fucking interenet forum, I might add) with the truth:

Q: "What does God mean to you?"

Manu: "I'm not a believer"

How the fuck can that simple answer upset you to the point of making this thread go 18 pages?

All I said was that I am surprised how he answered so openly and honestly a question (because most famous people do not discuss such things with fans on a forum) considering the rest of the questions were so light-hearted.

As for the rest of the thread, it's ridiculous that it's exploding into an argument with DPG21920.

As of Manu's response, I know that I have heard him say, "Thank God..." before, so it's weird that he said he doesn't believe.
That can be a cultural thing; like a phrase.

I often say in Slovenian "thank god" because it is a phrase that was used in my enviroment when i was a child and got used to it.

But apart from that I do not believe in any god and find most religions simply stupid. (i sincerely feel that way.... dont want to offend anyone)

But I still use the phrase out of habit...

haha now you are just messing with me. But I will bite. How can you prove that God exists? you can't. that is why christianism has gone the way of fear mongering.

So all these scientists are atheists BECAUSE they could not find a proof that God exists.

That is why people do believe. That is the essence of faith. If the smartest minds on earth for 100's of years could not disprove it, then you have to acknowledge that some things are out of humans control and beyond our grasp. That leads one to believe that there is an "unknown" variable. That is where religion comes in.

I probably have . . . many times . . . but not on this thread. That privilage belongs to you.

The answer did not upset me at all. It surprised me.

Bull-fucking-shit.

You said Manu was not smart for simply stating his non belief in God in his own internet forum. You even equated his faith confession with Hitler or the KKK.

Tell me again who has made an ass of himself?

I said Manu was a Smart guy and I would be shocked if he just openly discussed such things with fans because most famous people do not do that. I did not equate what Manu said with Hitler or the KKK, I equated that to another argument about people having rights to say what they want.

Why would anyone take flack simply by saying "I do not believe in God"? Are you seriously this retarded?

Why is Barack Obama getting flack for possibly being a Muslim?

No need to do that. I have read all your posts in this thread, especially the early ones, and they are trully hillarious. I rarelly side with BB in issues regarding religion, but boy is he right on this one!

You just got caught up in the mob mentality. The people who asked me to clarify now know what I meant and have no problem with it. Just an overreaction by another sheep like yourself.

I think we should demand Kori provide a religion section to the forum.

Really, is the Kings Forum even capable of producing 18 pages in a year, let alone a couple of days.

I disagree. I don't think the topic merits the 18 pages and counting we have right now.

No, you have to conclude that there is a unknown variable that the most advanced minds cannot figure out.

There are multiple accounts of different people with regards to Jesus being a real person. Whether or not that makes him the son of God is not the point. We know who "created" hobbits, trolls and ...

The Christian philosophical framework of the West created an environment where rationalism could grow and flourish. Eventually rationalism became parasitic and killed its host. But now, without any framework of its own to start from, rationalism has no anchor from which to carry out deduction and therefore drifts into nihilism. At the same time, its promise of grand overarching narratives that explain everything has fallen short. The thinkers of the age elucidated these fatal flaws a half-century ago. Now the great minds of science encounter a reality where every answer poses multiple new questions, and knowledge must be coupled with mystery and wonder. The doers of this age came to grips with the fading phantom of perfect knowledge and resolved to act anyway with the limited understanding they have, a leap of faith if you will.

So, things come full circle. The default folk philosophy which was Christian in previous ages is now based upon a rationalism that itself is obsolete. Pascal described this a long time ago. He agreed that God does not reveal himself through objective evidence. He called the atheist intellectually lazy because he refuses to consider whether God might reveal himself through other means.

Where in that quote does it say that atheist do not know how to act? How can you read that? I was making the point that since no one can prove or disprove God, then the only thing that matters are what are the universal rights that everyone has regardless of what you believe or do not believe.

Universal truths do not have a religion. Just like eating or breathing, it is how people act. A tangible measure.

No I proved your point wrong. If, just like in America's judicial system, you have something you want to condemn, you must prove beyond on a reasonable doubt that you are correct. You cannot do that. No one has been able to do that. If the smartest people in the world are non-believers, you would think at least one of them would of been able to disprove God's existence, right?

If you're going to use sarcasm, is it better not to be so woefully ignorant of the subject matter. Einstein was not an atheist; he did not disgaree with the idea that a Creator exists, but rather with the notion that the Creator was a personal God invested in the lives of individual human beings.

It is part of the arrogance of this age that so many people who know nothing of what their forefathers knew nevertheless regard themselves the superiors of those forefathers by virtue of being born later. We don't have near so many rationalists as we do unthinking skeptics who imagine themselves to be clever.

O RLY?

I never claimed Einstein was an atheist. I claimed Einstein was a self-professed agnostic:

"My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment."
