I've been watching all the training camp updates on houstontexans.com and they all have a ridiculous amount of confidence going into the season. I have huge concerns about the secondary but I'm sure the pass rush will make them look better.
Kubiak is pretty high on Okoye during camp. They are going with a balls our rush instead of the read and react bullshit they had been doing for years. Hopefully the aggression pays off.

I don't think they have really found a position for Casey yet. I heard he has taken reps at TE and FB. He's so versatile I'm sure he will be in various places depending on the set.

I saw it. Winston was pissed because Barwin beat him twice in a drill and pushed Barwin from behind. Amobi came in to defend Barwin. Hope this attitude continues during the season.

Texans rookie Cushing out with sprained knee
By: John McClain
Brian Cushing, the Texans' first-round draft choice, will not play in Saturday’s preseason opener in Kansas City because of a sprained left knee.
Coach Gary Kubiak said after practice Wednesday that Cushing “will be out for awhile" and will be replaced in the starting lineup by Zac Diles.
Cushing, who was inserted into the starting lineup on the strong side from the first organized team activities in the offseason, complained of soreness in his knee on Tuesday. An MRI revealed the sprain in his knee.
Diles played the strongside last season and was leading the team in tackles when he suffered a broken leg during a special teams drill in practice.
Linebacker Kevin Bentley, who started in place of Diles last season, will move to the left side and back up Xavier Adibi.

Pathetic effort by the defense. The second and third teams got owned by the Saints. The first team was not terrible but not good either. The offense is there, it just looks like they might have some trouble getting stops. Good thing they have two more games to work out the kinks.

We couldn't stop the run to save our lives tonight. Most of it was lack of effort. They just got pushed around. It's just a preseason game though..and there were many positives to take out of it despite the bad defensive effort. If our D is still looking shaky going into the final preseason game then I will start to feel some concern.

unfortunately, the problem wasn't all New Orleans' offense...it was yours as well. 4 turnovers isn't going to bode well for anyone. Mike Bell did have a hell of a game, though, as did Arrington, for New Orleans, so they did look strong. The only thing that bugged me (being that the Texans are my second favorite team) was the turnovers.

He put on about 10lbs of muscle during the off-season. I hope that doesn't effect his quickness through the hole.
The line didn't get ANY push off of the ball during the game. That doesn't concern me much since they were going up against the best run D of the past 2 seasons.

Nah, gaining 10 lbs of muscle will not take away from his quickness, but it will help him in goal line situations and hitting the holes harder.
Slaton will be fine this year, and have another great year.

I just read this little tidbit of information and thought it was interesting:
"Teams were successful (picking up 40% of the needed yardage to move the chains on first down, 60% on second down, or 100% on third or fourth down) throwing the ball at him on 56% of their attempts. That placed Robinson 69th amongst corners. He allowed 8.9 yards per attempt -- that's 78th. He only broke up six of the 51 passes thrown at him."
I don't see why he is demanding top 3 corner money if his numbers were this bad. He should be happy with the 6-year $50 million deal he was offered. I am now on the "Fuck Dunta Robinson" bandwagon.

Texas QB Matt Schaub status for opener still uncertain
HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston quarterback Matt Schaub (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/6849) returned to practice Tuesday, though it's not clear whether he will start against the Jets in this Sunday's season-opener.
Schaub took half the snaps in practice, his first significant work since the injury Aug. 31 against the Vikings. He is listed as day-to-day.
"He took a big step forward (Tuesday)," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "He's progressing toward getting ready to go, so it's a positive move forward for him."
Kubiak stopped short of saying Schaub, who has missed five games in each of the last two seasons with injuries, would start against the Jets. He did announce that Rex Grossman (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/6358) would be Houston's No. 2 quarterback this week.
Grossman, who led Chicago to the Super Bowl in 2007, overtook Dan Orlovsky (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/7321) in the competition to back up Schaub after throwing two touchdowns in Houston's preseason finale. Orlovsky, a seven-game starter for Detroit last season, was scheduled to be the backup before Grossman's recent performance that came after he missed two weeks with an injury.
"Matt is hobbled, so they've got to be ready to go," Kubiak said. "But as I told Dan and Rex, I'm leaning toward Rex's experience and the way he handled himself, handled the team the other night. I'm kind of drawing from what I've seen him do in the past and (am) just very comfortable with him right now."
Grossman was excited about the decision, but said it won't change anything he does.
"I've got to prove myself every practice and every time I go out there," he said. "You get graded and you get judged basically every time you throw the football. So I'm still going to have that same sense of urgency."
The status of receiver Kevin Walter (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/6591) and safety Eugene Wilson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/6372) are also uncertain because of injuries.
Walter, who was second on the team with 899 yards receiving and eight touchdowns last season, has a hamstring injury. Wilson was injured by an illegal crackback block delivered by Brett Favre (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/1025) for which the quarterback was fined $10,000.
Another question mark for the Texans is how rookie linebacker Brian Cushing (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/9279) and veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/6769) will perform on Sunday. Cushing missed all four preseason games because of a sprained knee, but is healthy and expected to start at strongside linebacker.
Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/7782) is confident that Cushing is up to the task, but has been trying to help the first-round pick in the days leading up to his NFL debut.
"I stay on him, always asking him questions to make sure he's into what we're doing, into our game plan and making sure we're both on the same page," Ryans said. "The more me, him and Zac (Diles) communicate the easier it's going to be for all three of us."
Robinson missed all of camp in a contract holdout before reporting on Sunday. He is expected to start.
"The thing that concerns me is they have not all been working together, but it's time to go to work together," Kubiak said. "I think they all understand it too. So the sense of urgency, the attention to detail in getting ready to play, has got to be good anyway but it better be great this week."
Robinson practiced with the team for the first time Tuesday and was encouraged afterward.
"I thought I'd feel a little rusty, but I felt fine, like I had been out there for a while," he said. "I would say it was a good start ... it felt good to be back out there with the fellas and running around a little bit."

Indeed it is.
Just got through watching it on the DVR. I'd like to talk about the good we saw in the defense but that is almost impossible with all the bad on the offensive side.
I put this loss on the coaches. We didn't even look like we were ready to play on offense and when the shit hit the fan there was no adjustments. Our offensive linemen were getting mauled and Schaub was staring at someone in a green jersey ever time he touched the ball. The whole while the coaches just watched the slaughter like a doe in the headlights.
Very tough loss in a to start a year where there are lots of high expectations. Just sucks.

The Texans practiced outside on a breezy Wednesday underneath sunny skies at the Methodist Traning Center. They continue their preparations for their Week 2 matchup on the road against the Tennessee Titans.
What's that ruckus?: For much of the 95-minute practice, artificial crowd noise was played over speakers that lined the field to simulate the upcoming game environment at LP Field. It was one of a few wrinkles that were different about practice this week than last.
"We picked up the tempo and got on the clock today," head coach Gary Kubiakhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) said. "I think we'd been really slow in what we were doing, so we picked up the tempo at practice and worked with some adversity out here, because we didn't play anywhere in the preseason that was loud. That's something we really need to work on to get ready."
Wilson's return: Safety Eugene Wilsonhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) practiced with the team today and continues his recovery from a knee injury caused by a Brett Favre crack-back block in the Monday Night Football preseason contest against the Vikings.
"Eugene's a big part of this team and he's played very well for us," Kubiak said of Wilson. "Going into Week 1 without him made it tough with just those three safeties. We'd love to have him back."
Wilson said he's anxious to get back as well and doesn't know how much action he'll see on Sunday, but says he wants to take the field for the first time since Aug. 30.
Titan-ic task for the offense: The Tennessee defense gave up 13 points in a Week 1 road loss to the Steelers, and even more impressive, the Steelers managed only 36 rushing yards on 23 attempts. The Texans are looking to run the ball better in Week 2 than they did on Sunday against the Jets, when Steve Slatonhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) and company combined for 38 yards on 13 attempts.
"They're as good a defense as you'll face, physically," Kubiak said. "We understand that challenge. I think they're playing better (than they did in 2008 with Albert Haynesworth), to be honest with you. I look at an eight-guy rotation that's as good as any group I've ever seen. The team I watched against Pittsburgh was very good." Kubiak didn't limit his praise of the Titans' defense to just the front line players.
"They tackle as well in the secondary as well as any team that I've seen in my time in the National Football League," Kubiak said. "We've got our work cut for us up front, and everywhere."
Injury update: Wilson and cornerback Jacques Reeveshttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) practiced today, along with receiver Kevin Walterhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#). Kubiak expects all three to play against the Titans, but thinks Walter will start and also play the most. Walter took his normal amount of practice reps this morning.
Defensive end Antonio Smithhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) was sick with a stomach flu and missed practice, but said afterward in the locker room that he would definitely play Sunday. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Shaun Codyhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) sat out with a bruised knee, an injury that happened in the waning moments of the Jets game. Fullback Vonta Leachhttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) missed practice as well, and Kubiak said Cody and Leach are both day-to-day. Receiver André Davishttp://assets.houstontexans.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5572#) also is still out due to the concussion he suffered Sunday.

Tacks = fail. If we don't give up the big plays we own them.
Now is the time. We have had mental mistakes the first two weeks but everything should be correctable. Schaub has shown that when he has time to throw the ball we can play with anyone in the league. The defense is showing some flashes of what it can be but they need to remain disciplined. Cushing is a man beast and is showing just how huge he is going to be together with Diles and Ryans.
The next three games are most definitely winnable. Two at home against Jax and the Raiders, then off to Arizona. Having both Jax and the Tacks sitting at 0-2 is huge for us. It's ours to lose fellas.

They are going to have to do something about giving up so many big plays. Two 50+ yard runs and a 60+ yard pass is just ridiculous. I know they are playing a more aggressive style that will give up big plays but that's absurd. I think a major problem is the lack of a decent safety. Busing and Wilson are total garbage.

Without run game, Texans' win goes against the norm
By JOHN MCCLAIN Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle
One day after his team accomplished two of his goals— winning on the road and winning in the AFC South — coach Gary Kubiak still could not enjoy the Texans' 34-31 victory at Tennessee.
“We've got a lot of things we're going to have to improve to give ourselves a chance to win week in and week out,” Kubiak said Monday. “We did some good things, but we're just making some big mistakes.
“We've got a lot of problems we've got to work out to give ourselves a fair chance to win (consistently).”
What makes the victory at Tennessee even more improbable is that the Texans could not run the ball and couldn't stop the run. They ran 29 times for 63 yards, a 2.2-yard average. They allowed the Titans to run for 240 yards on 26 carries, a 9.2-yard average.
“We're last in the league in running the ball, and we're last in the league at stopping the run,” Kubiak said. “Historically in this league, you're not going to be successful if you can't run and you can't stop the run. We're as poor as we can be in those two phases.”
Despite having every starter back on offense, the Texans average 50.5 rushing yards a game and 2.4 yards a carry.
The defense has been even worse, allowing 240.5 yards per game and 6.3 a carry.
Committed to the run
“I think it's a combination of things: scheme issues with us as coaches, running better, blocking better up front,” Kubiak said. “I thought we stayed more committed to the run (at Tennessee). We were down 21-7 on the road, and we still were able to run 29 times.
“That's what I was talking about last week — being committed to what you're doing regardless of the situation. So I felt better about that.”
Steve Slaton rushed for 1,282 yards and averaged 4.8 a carry as a rookie. He has 51 yards on 26 carries, a 2-yard average.
“He can definitely run better,” Kubiak said. “My concern with him, as I told him today, he's got three balls on the ground in (26) carries in two games. That can't happen.
“We're very fortunate. (Sunday) he gets two balls knocked out at some very important times, and (left tackle) Duane (Brown) gets them both. He's got a lot of improvement to make from that standpoint.”
The Texans' run defense has been shown on highlight films for two days. The 57- and 91-yard touchdown runs of Titans running back Chris Johnson — not to mention his 69-yard touchdown off a reception on which strong safety Dominique Barber left him alone near the sideline — are going coast to coast.
Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew is next up. Obviously, he's going to be watching film of what the Jets (190 yards) and Titans (240) did to the Texans' run defense.
“He must be licking his chops,” Kubiak said. “I would think he's probably pretty excited about the yards we've been giving up on the ground. He's as good a back as there is in the league.
“Like I told the guys today: It doesn't stop. The backs will keep coming. They'll keep trying to run the ball on you until we get it stopped.”
Better after halftime
The defense improved in the second half of the Titans game. Tennessee had seven possessions in the second half and scored one touchdown on Johnson's 91-yard run.
“We can put some more guys up there,” Kubiak said. “We've had our share of eight-man fronts. (Sunday) we gave up a couple of huge runs just in alignment and assignment issues.
“It's not like we're looking at the film and saying we don't have the people to stop the run. The defense is there. The scheme is there. The assignments are there. We're not getting them done.
“We've just got to get a lot better at what we're doing. Quit busting some assignments.”
Dr. Gonzo
09-23-2009, 08:58 AM
It's good to see Kubiak focus on what needs to be improved on and not simply be happy with the win. Slaton and Brown need to get it going for this team to have a chance. No run game means no success in the NFL.

Brown looked good in pre season but he hasnt really had a chance to run since I think they are trying to get slaton going. Fucker has had the fumble bug too. I read somewhere where Kubes was regretting not getting Cedric Benson. As much as I would have liked to see him here and as good as he is doing its just the def we have been up against. Yeah Kubiak is pretty annoyed with Slaton's fumbling. He did say he regrets not getting Benson. I think the lack of run game has a lot to do with Meyers getting beat by almost every DT he has faced. That dude is terrible. It won't be long before Caldwell takes his job.

Johnson, Jones fined for skirmish

Associated Press
HOUSTON -- Houston Texans (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=hou) receivers Andre Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4461) and Jacoby Jones (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10517) have been fined by the NFL for their roles in a fight during Sunday's 34-31 win over Tennessee.
Johnson was fined $7,500 for unnecessary roughness for taking Tennessee's Cortland Finnegan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9801) to the ground by the facemask after the play was over, and Jones was fined $5,000 for entering the fight unnecessarily.
Tennessee's Jason Jones (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11288) was fined $5,000 for his part in the fight earlier this week. He was ejected from the game after an official said he threw a punch in the altercation on Houston's sideline.

Facemasks happen during the flow of the game. It happens because you are trying to bring a ball carrier down and just grab the son-of-a-bitch.
But when you grab a players facemask AFTER a play, and bring the player down, that is bullshit, its a pussy move. Its saying you are not man enough to bring me down by yourself. One of these days a players neck will be broken this way, watch and see. Hopefully Johnson learned his lesson.
I lost alot of respect for the Andre Johnson. He WAS just about the only texan that I had respect for.

Texans fined for participation in fight
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 25, 2009 11:18 AM ET
Titans defensive tackle Jason Jones was thrown out of last Sunday's game for his role in a fight against the Texans, but was only fined $5,000 (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/24/jason-jones-gets-off-easy-for-sunday-ejection/).
We learned Friday that Texans wide receivers Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones were fined $7,500 and $5,000 respectively (http://www.nbc12.com/Global/story.asp?S=11198067), yet were allowed to continue playing.
Johnson got the larger amount for starting the fracas by pulling Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan to the ground by his facemask after the play was over. (Johnson received an unsportsmanlike penalty at the time.) Jacoby Jones was fined for entering the fight unnecessarily.
Judging by the amount of the fines, Johnson appears to be most at fault, yet he was allowed to stay in the game.
Still, the Texans probably don't mind the fines as a whole. Known as a team that has been pushed around in Nashville over the years.

Texans pick up Pollard
Former Chiefs safety fills Pitts’ spot on roster
Bernard Pollard, a safety who started every game for Texans secondary coach David Gibbs at Kansas City last season, has been signed to take the roster spot of Chester Pitts, who was placed on injured reserve after season-ending knee surgery.
Pollard, 24, was Kansas City’s second-round pick in 2006 and last season made 84 solo tackles. He was cut by the Chiefs this season.
“I got a better chance to win here,” Pollard said. “Like I just told the guys, this is insane. To see these guys go out here and practice like this, they’re going to bring in a lot of wins this season. I want to do so much to contribute to this team and help them win. It’s going to be a fun, fun opportunity. I’m excited. I can’t wait for the first game.”
Whether he’ll get there remains to be seen. Coach Gary Kubiak said Pollard was brought in only because of the roster vacancy and “would be evaluated over the next two days. Then we’ll see where we’re at with him.”
Pollard (6-1, 224 pounds)received lots of attention last season when he hit Tom Brady in the first game of the season, causing the New England Patriots quarterback to be lost for the season with a knee injury. That’s a subject he’s tired of talking about.
“It’s done,” he said. “It’s over with.”

What a shitty way to lose the game. The refs fucked them on the penalty that took away the game tying touchdown and that fuck should've held on to the ball in the endzone.
Actually, it shouldn't even have had to come to that if the D didn't suck so much ass.

Actually the linebackers and line played pretty well.
Let's face it. Our secondary is shit. I don't know if it's coaching or if these players just suck balls. When they are not letting receivers run around wide open they are epically failing at playing the run and tackling...as seen in Jones-Drew's 61 yard TD run. It really sucks to see the offense work so hard to put up points and then they get to go to the sideline and watch Garrard hooking up with receivers like it's 7 on 7. The playoffs are a pipe dream if something doesn't change in our secondary.

There is absolutely ZERO talent at safety. The only thing remotely close to a player in that secondary is Dunta and he is above average at best. The D-line didn't get any pressure on Gerrard and at this rate they are going to give up 3000 yards rushing for the season.
The offense actually had a nice game with the exception of the first Schaub INT and the Chris Brown fumble that should have never happened. I don't see any fixing that defense and if the offense doesn't score at least 40 a game they are fucked.

The LBs and Dline had a decent game against the rush. As soon as a player gets into the second level it's over. The safeties are there to prevent big runs and that's exactly what they aren't doing. But I do agree that the LBs and Dline are primarily responsible for stopping the run.

I saw alot of the game, and the LBs look out of place on alot of run plays. The coaches need to get on them for that because ur right, that secondary is not going to stop anyone. That's on the players, not the coaching.

Come on now. Lets here the excuses!
Excuses like, "Well our secondary blows and couldn't stop the run."
Yes, they do blow, but your D-Line and LBs are the main ingrediants in stopping the running game. Your favorites like Mario Williams, Amobi, DeMaco and Cushing, you know, the guys you all overrate, are the ones that blew and couldn't stop the run.
Hope you all caught the Colts game, to witness how a REAL team wins ball games.

The Texans are just killing me in my fantasy league. I've had the misfortune of going up against the guy who had Peterson in Week 1 and the guy who had Jones-Drew in Week 3. Peterson put up 40 and Jones-Drew put up 35. Needless to say I'm 1-2. Thankfully I wasn't the sap who had to endure Chris Johnson and the 50 points he put up on the Texans D.
