Suns are a great team, but this is a little disappointing. Spurs need to focus on defending the 3 point line better. The rebounding is good. If they clean up the defense, stay aggressive and make ft's they will be fine.
They have to play much better defense though. Spurs can get good looks when they are smart and aggressive. They have to focus more though.

After this series, the importance of having a smart, tough 3-point shooter cannot be overemphasized. It's why Jared Dudley is the best roleplayer in this series. It's also why Richard Jefferson is useless. Think back to the time when we had the likes of Kerr, Bowen, Horry, Finley, Barry etc. All our "shooters" are either not shooters at all (Bogans), suck hard (Mason) or grade-A chokers (Bonner).

The first five minutes of the third quarter will determine whether or not we have a chance. If we come out fast and aggressive we can hurt them. But if we come out like we were in the middle of the second quarter, we will lose.

They have to play much better defense though. Spurs can get good looks when they are smart and aggressive. They have to focus more though.
It's not a little disappointing, it's very disappointing. Sure they built a great lead, but it ended up meaning nothing because they gave it up in an instant, they didn't even know what to do to stop it from happening.
"If they focus on defending 3 point line better....if they clean up the defense...if they stay aggressive...if they make FTs...they will be fine."
I agree with this. The problem is, all of these things were said throughout this entire series, throughout both first games, and now these trends on continuing. It's game 3 already and they still refuse to cover the 3 point line, refuse to stay aggressive and hold onto their leads, refuse to make a FT. I just don't get it, nothing makes me think they will do all of these things for the rest of the series, or even this game, but they'll need to if they want to avoid getting swept.
Some people say they are a little worried, we should be completely worried. Not trying to be a complete pessimist but the Spurs have failed to adjust this series. They started awesome this game but it doesn't even matter anymore. Hopefully they can sharpen those areas up in the 2nd half, but just based on short history (games 1,2, and 1st half of 3) I don't see it happening.

No shit. Lets all collapse on the guy going to the rim so he can kick it out to one of the three guys wide open for the 3. Brilliant ain't it? :bang
DPG21920
05-07-2010, 10:01 PM
Spurs still have a lead. They cleaned up the rebounding. Spurs just made some defensive mistakes and the Suns are just doing what they do; punishing you for your mistakes and being explosive.
The Spurs are doing a lot of things well, but just like in the first 2 games, the things they are doing wrong are the only things you can't do against the Suns if you want to beat them in a series.
Going into this game, the Spurs needed to do 2 of these 3 things in order to turn the series around:
1) Defend the 3 point line better.
2) Shoot better from 3.
3) Rebound much better. Win the boards.
Right now, the Spurs have done #3, but they have to get better in either #1 or #2 if they want a legit shot at winning the game/series.

I liked the strategy earlier of trapping Nash above the arc, it seemed to fluster him (might have even walked with no call made) and it allowed the other Spur defenders to recover quicker on rotations because they had a shorter distance to travel. That and NOT collapsing on him in the lane is the recipe to limiting the Suns offensive opportunities as a team.

It's sickening to see us complain about our offense when the Spurs have 50 points on the board. That should be enough for a decent half, the defense is atrocious on the close outs. To be perfectly honest you have to give Phoenix all the credit in the world. They have 3 deadly 3pt shooters on the outside and Nash/Amare who create living hell for the Spurs on the inside. If you try to help out on those guys the best shooters in the league are getting wide open shots. The Spurs at some point will have to live with Amare and Nash carving them up inside but don't leave those fucking 3pt shooters open!

I am not so concerned with the Suns making a run. They are an explosive offensive team and the Spurs are known to go cold. Especially when they miss 7 consecutive FT's.
My problem is what keyed the run for the Suns. Not the run itself. All teams go on runs, but when you allow teams to have such a blatant advantage in certain areas that have really hurt you, that is where you get into trouble.

This game should be tied right now; the 6-point lead is fool's gold. Matt Bonner made 2 consecutive three pointers in a playoff game ... there's your fluky 6 point difference. The bottomline is that we are unable to stop their pick and roll offense; repeatedly collapsing and leaving the shooters open. Meanwhile, all the Suns have to do is double TD and challenge someone to make a 3, or just foul Duncan and force him to shoot free throws.
Not even Alvin Gentry can fuck this up.

The "team" is letting us down. There always seems to be one or two guys who are significantly dogging it. So, will Parker get lit up by Nash, will Frye and Richardson bomb away from 3 or will it be Amare on the pick and roll or sill the Spurs decide to to play these three plays straight up.

They don't need him if he's playing like shit. And he is. I'd rather have Blair or even RAIN DANCE out there since they're actually trying.

So you'd rather give up a layup/dunk to Nash/Amare than daring guys like Frye try and beat the Spurs? Yeah, the Suns are shooting over 40% from downtown right now, but it's mainly Richardson who has been killing us.
3 > 2
With these Suns the 3pt shot is pretty much going in, just take a look at some of the 3's they made tonight. They're so confident shooting the three it's terrifying.

Blair was hustling and Bonner was hitting his 3's. They actually did decent this game and helped greatly to get that big lead.
Blair/Bonner combo meaning both of them on the court at the same time.
Suns have eaten us alive when they've been our two bigs.
I have no problem with either player...they're ballin. :tu

Yep. That's how teams make runs by exploiting an advantage. Brilliant.
That is not what I said. All teams naturally go on runs. But the Spurs are allowing the same thing to happen all of the time against the suns. They are defending the 3 PT line poorly.
Suns would still make runs no matter what, but the Spur have to run them off the 3 PT line.

IMHO, that dare has yet to pay any real dividends to this point. I'd trust the defense in the paint, even playing one-on-one more than scrambling at the guys they have shooting it behind the arc.

This has to be the least satisfying 6 point halftime lead ever.
No shit.
We hold a team that has averaged 110 for the series to 44 points. The D looked really good for the most part. I got no complaints there.
Who is going to step up for the Spurs in the second half offensively though? Our guys have got to hit open shots shots (RJ!) and sink goddamn free throws. Tony Parker... what is the point of getting to the line if he's going to revert to the his pre-Chip days and clank free throws like he's Timmy? Why do we play Matt Bonner after he hits two threes if he's not going to get another touch?
Sort this shit out and we kick the crap out of the Suns. GO SPURS!

Not even Alvin Gentry can fuck this up.
sure
thats why the spurs cant just automatically slow it down and run half court sets
and thats where we could use RJ
thats how we beat the Lakers in the regular season. the moment we get a rebound, Jefferson needs to sprint his ass downcourt and take it to the hole

Those missed free throws in the second quarter were killer. Spurs gotta make any and all free throws. If they miss then fines should be handed out. TP really needs to learn to hit them because those 4 misses in a row bought me back to that game last season or the season before that we lost to Boston by 1 point because of those 4 missed TP free throws.
