According to some Celtics fans, Jeff Green and Corey Brewer are close friends? Hmm.

Why isn't Coach B on Twitter yet? Hill letting us down, Spurs could have worked the Florida connection.

Predictions on how many pages this thread will reach.

If Brewer signs somewhere else, 57 pages. The Spurstalk collective will need this thread to discuss how Brewer was never that good in the first place, stupid for signing somewhere else, and how whatever team signed him made a big mistake.

If Brewer signs with the Spurs, 38 pages. Discussion about how awesome Brewer is will be divided between this thread and 18 new threads about how the Spurs are now locks for the NBA title.

If Brewer picks Spurs, the smartest thing to do for him will be the STFU until Friday when he will clear waivers.

Dallas has a trade exception big enough to claim him from waivers but it's a move that will cost $4.5M to Cuban. It wouldn't be a reasonable move but Cuban could be tempted to do it if he knows that Brewer will go to SA once he has cleared waivers.

Hey, relax...the first reaction to being attacked or to have something you identify with attacked...is anger...

You didn't CREATE or invent San Antonio so why are you so defensive?

This is not random hate-this is reality.

I was born and raised in San Antonio and I am very aware of the home is the best/Texas is the greatest attitude...

but if you ever have a chance to live elsewhere as others do...you may find that there are some really beautiful places with a lot more to offer than S.A....

Boston is a world class city and if you have ever compared nightlife, dining, entertainment, physical beauty--being near water,etc...

you will find that S.A. is not on the same level...nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to be angry about...

If you are a millionaire like all NBA players...this would be a no brainer--if you have to have a nice place to spend your time and money...then you would naturally want to be in a nicer place....

The players that retire in S.A. have also formed many friendships, business opportunities, and also enjoy their time in S.A. and decide to stay...nothing wrong with that...S.A. has its merits...

The women that I have met in cities like L.A., San Francisco & even Dallas..seemed a bit more cultured, sophisticated and just plain more interesting to me anyway...and a LOT of more different flavors to explore if you know what I mean...again..I don't hate S.A....but there are some extremely beautiful cities that put S.A. to shame...

Couldn't have saved your fingers from all that typing by simpling typing "different strokes for different folks" or something like that?

You have your opinion, everyone else has there own.

Don't throw around your opinion as fact, it's that simple.

I've visited many a world class city, never lived in them, so please don't be so presumptive in thinking anyone who likes SA or defends it hasn't been outside of SA or Texas. I know a lot of people from these world class cities who have moved to SA and enjoy it. Again, different strokes for different folks.

But honestly let's just get back to the discussion at hand. Brewer potentially signing with either SA or Bos.

I totally agree.
And having lived here in S.A. and most of those other places as well as having had the money and time to experience the niceties of all of them, there are just too many reasons I prefer to live here.

If Brewer picks the Celtics over the Spurs, he's an idiot. Had they not acquired Green, I'd be saying the opposite. But with Green on board, barring injury, he's got no chance to crack their rotation and no chance at having a future on that team. With the Spurs, it's conceivable he could crack the rotation (I know what Pop said, but I can't imagine he wouldn't take a turn guarding Durant in the second round, if and when). Also, he could easily be a part of the future, as the Spurs don't have a true backup three, or a quality wing defender with size.

After thinking about it overnight, I'd really like to see us snag this guy too - offensive liability, but he could be the second incarnation of Bruce Bowen. If we do sign Brewer I hope Bowen is brought in as a specialist coach to tutor and hone the young man's skills.

However, surely there's almost no possibility that he gets through waivers to us? Every other team has a shot at him, and 6 have said they want him. At the very least Cuban will grab him to screw us. It's a pipedream, so I'm not getting my hopes up. If CIA Pop somehow pulls it off, he will have earned his moniker yet again. ;)

http://celticshub.com/2011/03/01/the-battle-for-corey-brewer/

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Corey Brewer is still weighing his options for the future after being waived by the New York Knicks today. Stein tweeted earlier this afternoon:
“Brewer in process of weighing it all after Monday night recruiting calls from Popovich, Doc R and Cuban. Lakers, to date, have NOT called”
However, CSN’s A. Sherrod Blakely more recently tweeted that despite the C’s strong interest, Dallas may be Brewer’s most likely landing spot.
“Right now the Celtics are focused on Corey Brewer. There’s a strong belief that he’s the final piece to this championship puzzle.”
“Competition is very tight for Brewer. I think the Mavs are going to be the team to beat for his services.”
The Knicks also waived Keleena Azubuike, who was limited to 9 games this season due to injury. If healthy, Azubuike could be an interesting addition for the Celtics. He expects to return soon from major knee surgery and it was reported that he was surprised by this decision. Ultimately though, I don’t think this is a guy the Celtics take a chance on.

Nah, I didn't really mean that the way it came out. What I meant was a very nice defensive player who is offensively challenged. However, Brewer does have the athleticism and length to be an elite defender, maybe not as elite as Bruce (who should make it to the HoF IMHO) though.

LOL, I'm as much of a Cleveland fan as Axe Murderer is a Toronto fan. I have roots here growing up in a suburb of Cleveland. I have no emotional attachment to the team nor to Lebron. I have followed the Spurs passionately since the Admiral era so when posters make jokes at my expense for being a Cleveland fan, I play along.

Beachwood is an upscale suburb of Cleveland. Its not too sad of a story if you like nice things. At this time, I don't need to borrow one of your many shrinks. They probably have their hands full.

I think he is torn between sentimentally picking the Spurs and financially picking the Mavs.
My guess is that Pop sold him on becoming a Spur and that he could truly be a huge help here for a long time to come, but he is young and the Mavs undoubtedly offered more and maybe even a starting role so that together offsets the sentimental choice or at least tears at him making the choice so much harder. Just a guess.
If he is like most, expect him to choose the money and run.

So if Brewer chooses the Spurs over the Mavs, that means he really wants to be here or he feels the Spurs have a better shot at the 'ship. I'm Ok with that

If it’s about money, the Dallas Maverick may win out as they still have their full mid-level exception they can offer up. Meaning Dallas can offer $4 million, San Antonio can offer up about $1.5 million in a cap exception, and Boston can offer only a veteran minimum, same with Miami.
Charlotte and New Orleans also are throwing their hats in the ring.

But Dallas can offer money and the chance to contend. That’s got to be a tempting combo.

Paging Bruno for more explanations on this...

Questions:
- claiming a player off waivers supersedes any prior arrangement this players might have? For example Brewer announces he will sign with Spurs, Cuban can still claim him?
- where do the $4.5M in your example go? To the NBA, as a fee? To the player, and if yes, as a one-time bonus, or added to his contract, or just replacing his contract?

Cos if it's money down the drain, yes that might be tough to swallow, even for Cuban (and in this case I guess there's a pre-agreed salary to be paid regulated by the CBA?)

But if $4.5M is actually Brewer's salary if picked up from waivers, then it's not really that much more than the $4M that Dallas can offer anyway... so Cuban might do it.

I don't think that game last night helped us in the chase for him. We looked soft as hell and the Mavs actually won theirs. That might have screwed our chances with him

I feel like he would look at us and see that we needed a defensive stopper.

He could also look at the Mavs and Peja being in the starting unit, and see that the Mavs need a defensive stopper in the starting unit as well.

A great explanation of the waivers procedure:

What are waivers?

It's a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A player released between August 15th and the end of the regular season stays on waivers for 48 hours. A player released at any other time stays on waivers for seven days. During the waiver period other teams may claim a waived player. If more than one team tries to claim the player, the team with the worst record gets him. If a player on waivers is claimed, the new team acquires his existing contract and pays the remainder of his salary. There is also a fee of $1,000, payable to the league office, for claiming a waived player.

A team can claim a waived player only if one of the following is true:

* The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
* The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary.
* The team has a Traded Player exception for at least the player's salary.
* The player's contract is for one or two seasons and he is paid the minimum salary.

If no team claims a waived player, he is said to have "cleared waivers." The player may sign with a new team of his choice, and the player's prior team continues to pay the guaranteed portion of the terminated contract. The player's salary with his new team is a matter of negotiation. Few players are actually claimed while on waivers, since the team claiming a waived player inherits his entire contract. It is far more common for teams to wait for the player to clear waivers, and then sign him to a much smaller (even minimum salary) contract.

Dallas has a traded player exception big enough to claim Brewer from waivers. If they do it and no teams with a worse record do, they will automatically get Brewer even if he wants to play elsewhere.

Brewer's salary this year was $3.7M. Dallas will have to pay the part of this salary ( about $800K) that he still must get. Dallas is also above the luxury tax so they will have to pay $3.7M in tax if they claim him from waivers.

And if Dallas offer him $4M after he has cleared waivers, it will cost them $8M because of the tax. It will be more expensive than claiming him from waivers but they could lock him to a multiyear contract.

Makes me feel like if Dallas really wanted him, they'd be swooping in and nabbing him off the wire any time now.

I feel like the longer this goes (at least until Friday), the better the Spurs chances get.

After looking more closely, brewer was waived on Monday so he will clear waivers today.

And when a team claims a player from waivers, you don't hear about it until the end of the waiver period.

Meaning we won't hear about it until the end of his own particular waiver period that happens today, or the end of the entire waiver period of all the players on waivers?
