View Full Version : Corey Brewer getting bought out.

After looking more closely, brewer was waived on Monday so he will clear waivers today.
And when a team claims a player from waivers, you don't hear about it until the end of the waiver period.
so we wait 48 hours from the time he was waived....

So Cuban is just sitting there smugly knowing he already has him under contract after claiming him off of waivers and making the other teams sweat, namely the Spurs. That in effect keeps the Spurs dangling after Brewer since he is their number one option, and away from making other pick ups like say Butler.
clearing waivers really would not impact what sources know and what would be reported before that even transpired.

I think there's news of Butler going to the Bulls.
And as far as the news on the waivers, there are people outside of front offices of teams that have access to that information. It would have gotten out by now.

Jeff McDonald was on the local ESPN radio station yesterday afternoon before the game, and he said that Brewer had narrowed it down to two teams where he might go and they were the Celtics and Spurs. Don't know if anyone else caught the interview. Just saying... :hat

UPDATE: Mike McGraw of the Daily Herald chimed in on this Monday, tweeting that "Butler does appear headed to Bulls, but nothing official yet."
ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard is also listing San Antonio, Dallas and Atlanta as teams interested in Butler.

He might not be able to yet until he clears all waivers, for fear that Cuban would take him if he names the true team he wants to play for such as the Spurs.
Consider, Pop would have known that the Mavs could outright take him off waivers, and as such would have made this known to him if he really wanted to be a Spur, and would have counseled him to keep it all quiet until he cleared all waivers. Pop would also be keeping it mum as well. We all know CIA Pop.

Dallas has a traded player exception big enough to claim Brewer from waivers. If they do it and no teams with a worse record do, they will automatically get Brewer even if he wants to play elsewhere.

Basically why I have been feeling like the Mavs have it already all locked up all along, and why I have been counseling to not get our hopes up as well.
I may be way off base here and maybe he really wants to go to the Celtics, but I doubt it.
IMHO I think he wants to be a Spur, especially knowing the Bowen and defensive tradition that has been here in the past, and that I'm quite sure he is aware of since he has been compared to Bowen on many occasions.
He probably knows that the Spurs would be the best place for him due to all of that, but maybe cannot just come right out and say so.
Naturally this all conjecture on my part so take it as for what it's worth.

First things first john, can the spurs maintain HCA with tony out? Second, whats the word on C. Brewer? The idea of him bolstering our defense has us spurs fans drooling.
John Hollinger (2:19 PM)
It will be extremely difficult for San Antonio to punt a six-game advantage away in just 23 games, so I wouldn't sweat that one. As for Brewer, I think the Spurs like him for exactly the reason you mentioned. But I also think they're going to lose the bidding to a team with midlevel exception money.
Hopefully Brewer chooses Winning over money.

My god, what would that lineup look like? Kidd-Brewer-Peja?-Dirk-Chandler? I don't like it. No need in trying to shift Brewer over from his more natural position like they tried to do with Caron Butler. Roddy is still very raw. He'll continue to improve. While he still lacks quite a bit defensively, he's a smart kid and presents problems for opposing defenses trying to guard him and that speed. I'd much rather prefer to have Roddy and his deficiencies out there than trying to plug a woeful Brewer into a position that doesn't suit him.

Cubes has not shown the desire this seaon to over pay for anything. In fact, he tightened the belt at the worst time.
He knows that Brewer isn't good enough (based on his production to date) to way over pay for. He knows Brewer isn't the true final piece for the Spurs either and he is right. Brewer is good for the Spurs but not so good that he has to outbid in order to keep him from the Spurs.
IMO the money isn't a real issue, even if the Mavs have more to spend.

How many times has Cuban signed a player with the sole intent of screwing the Spurs, and no intent of all to improve his team?
Seriously, Spur fans crack me up with their ignorant hatred of Cuban, acting like he is just some worthless, illogical piece of shit. The dude won't do shit like that unless it improves his team. And I don't think we can begin to count the number of times he has talked about his incredible respect for the Spurs and their organization, despite the whole Mavs/Spurs rivalry.

I can say one thing in favor of Cuban, is that he cares about his team. The NBA would be better if all the owners cared at least half as much as he does about their team. So in this sense I respect him.
On the other hand he must be a pretty bad communicator because his respect for the Spurs doesn't necessarily come through when he compares the Riverwalk to an open sewer...

The opportunity hasn't presented itself yet. Take off your shining armor for a moment. If it makes good business sense at the end of the day, Cubes will pull the trigger. In this context it makes sense for him to pull the trigger as it enhances his teams chances through subtraction from another. And, oh yeah he actually gets a good talent in this case. 4-6 mil wont break him obviously, but you can't tell me that Cubes doesn't have a penchant for overpaying marginal talent.
If it does go down like that, most other GM's are sure to get a good chuckle out of it (including RC I'd suspect).

I have no problem with Mark Cuban. I think he's a brilliant business man, BUT, my only problem with him is he thinks of himself as big as the team. Distractions, forcing trades himself instead of letting the FO do their job. ALA Peter Holt. My only problem with Holt is he just doesn't have deep enough pockets. That said, little I have problems with him.

I can understand the dislike for Terry. Completely understandable.
But for Cuban? Makes little sense to hate the guy because he cares about his team, and is very vocal about trying to make the NBA better, and is even willing to make himself look like an asshole, or work for a fucking Dairy Queen, if it draws attention to the league and gets more followers. The dude has most definitely done a lot to help generate more interest in the NBA. And his constant outspokenness is what has made the Mavs/Spurs rivalry the best rivalry this decade, and ultimately gave us the series they had in 2006 where there was so much heart, emotion, sweat, and tears in one of the greatest playoff series the NBA has ever seen. If it wasnt for Cuban, I'd put money on it, that the series they played in 06 would not have been the classic, hardnosed series we saw, if it wasnt for Cuban egging on the rivalry over the years.

Funny thing about Terry is, I totally do not blame any Spurs fan for thinking that. But he acts completely different with regard to the Spurs than any other team. His Spurs on-court antics aside, Terry is a really good dude. A class act.
And I'm very liable to thinking Mavs players are not class acts (Howard, Stackhouse, could go on).

Please, for the love of all that is unholy - namely, this guy - don't spin this as being a bad move for the Mavericks or a stupid decision by Brewer. Let's not go Full Retard.
Brewer would have been a better fit for the Spurs, had a bigger impact and role within their team and concept in the long term, imo, but signing with one of the three best teams in the West and securing himself for the future financially with a pending CBA, is not a poor decision - he's not a star, he's already torn an ACL and there's no guarantee he recoups the money he potentially would have lost by signing with the Spurs or Celtics.
Good get, Mavfan. ... Would've been a great get for Spurs, but the Mavs are certainly better than they were a few hours ago.
Sonovabitch.
The one consolation to all this trade madness was that the Lakers nor the Mavs had capitalized. So much for that....and they stick it to the Spurs while they are at it.
Oh well, his loss as far as I'm concerned. Guess we'll just have to send those jackasses fishing again the hard way.
you mean due to the fact that LA and Boston got ridiculously better?
Slightly. But the Spurs FO did their job to. Signing the likes of George Mason and Kieth Bogans as coveted players to this team. The Spurs could easily have competed with LA and Boston if it wasn't for that.
Oh and, health too.

I think I disagree with some of you that the Mavs were a "bad matchup" for the Spurs already before this signing. I actually think the Spurs have done a very nice job since 2007 of reshaping their roster to eliminate some of those matchup problems with the Mavs (lack of Bowen aside).
But adding Brewer definitely does create a matchup problem.

Definitely Peja's. Maybe a few minutes at SG depending on matchups, if they need to go big, especially if they made it to the Finals and faced Miami.
I'd say the playoff minute distribution will be something along these lines:
SF - Brewer (18), Peja (12), Marion (18)
PF - Dirk (39), Marion (9)

Don't get me wrong I would've liked to have him on the Spurs but I just dont see him being a HUGE difference maker for the Mavs. I mean he never really had great games against the Spurs when he was with the T'Wolves, so why would that change now? Plus with Terry, Barea, Marion, Roddy B, and Peja eating up most of the minutes on the wing spots, and with them already knowing the Dallas system, I highly doubt Corey Brewer gets valuable minutes this season or in the playoffs for them. It may, however, pay off in the future for them....

Slightly. But the Spurs FO did their job to. Signing the likes of George Mason and Kieth Bogans as coveted players to this team. The Spurs could easily have competed with LA and Boston if it wasn't for that.
Oh and, health too.
I'll give you that the Spurs FO missed on a couple of guys but LA and Boston got away with highway robbery (lol collusion) so quickly, that it would've been impossible for the Spurs to catch them within 1-2 years

If the Spurs had signed Corey Brewer, it would have shelved Anderson. Granted, Anderson has been injured, looks stiff and moves like he's at half-speed all the time time but he did show the Spurs some good things prior to his injury.

I agree with everything but Brewer being added creating a matchup problem.
I'd say the Spurs had/have compensated a great deal for the problems the Mavs caused for a while there and that this signing allows the Mavs to gain a little ground back. Brewer will certainly help to lessen the effectiveness of Manu at times, but only lessen and only at times.
It's gonna be another dogfight if they meet - per the usual.

remember though. Anderson has been out of basketball for awhile. He was injured late last year in college, skipped the summer league to heal for training camp then was injured very early in the season. He has been out of the game for awhile and will be hard for him to get into back into his rhythm and pick up spurs defense and offense. I saw the game against memphis on sunday. Pop was always calling him over to explain where he needed to be.
Brewer would have come in, maybe a little behind where JA is with his understanding of how things work but would have been in better shape and would not be getting the rookie treatment.
We lost more by forcing the development of JA.

Considering basketball is a game of runs, being able to lessen the effectiveness of a key player just a bit for a short while, often ends up being the difference between a win and a loss. No one can shut down a guy like Kobe, Bron, Wade, or even Ginobili, but if you can simply harass them out of easy buckets for a short 1-2 minute stretch while your team is scoring efficiently, that can make all the difference in the world.

a nice addition.
Mavs just had Marion and Peja for SF, Marion also backing up Dirk. Stevenson is too short for SF, Cardinal too slow (and sucking). It was really important to get another quality wing player with size.
Now we can go with the matchups, how hot/cold is Peja shooting, how much D we need...

All of this.
Brewer made a very good decision (he's got one of the best agents in the business) and Dallas got a good young player at a great price.
That's it.

I hope he enjoys sitting on the bench. If/when Butler returns, will he even be active? It's between him and Mahinmi and they'll probably keep Mahinmi active, since they only have three bigs active besides him (I know Marion plays backup four, but he's a three).
Clearly, he's not too bright and he doesn't value winning or playing that much. Could have taken less with the Spurs, possibly been in the rotation, playing a part on a team that could very well win the championship, then cashed in this summer/post lockout. Instead, he goes for the quick cash grab and goes to a non-contender, where he'll be hard pressed to play now and has no chance to play when they're healthy.

Butler isnt coming back this season. Thats a pipedream. Butler and Jones are out longterm. Cardinal will be the 3rd guy in streetcloths.
The Mavs have Peja and Marion. Marion will keep his tagteam benchrole with Terry. Marion will keep playing also backup PF minutes. Brewer has even a chance to surpass Peja as a starter.
Thats why he chooses the Mavs. Next season Peja is maybe gone, Stevenson too...

He claims he is. I'll take him at his word until I hear otherwise. I know Jones is out and that he and Cardinal are the two inactive guys. Because of their lack of big depth, though, Brewer is not even assured of being active if/when Butler returns. Even if he is, he'll be the 12th man, most likely.
Brewer has no role with the Mavs. They're not playing en entire backup front line that can't shoot for long stretches. They're not an explosive offensive team as is (even though they've been playing over their heads offensively recently) and because of their lack of shot creators, they need as much shooting as possible surrounding Nowitzki. He'll get occasional spot minutes, just so they can pretend to have a role for him, but he's got no chance of figuring into the rotation (barring injury, of course). Next season, unless they dramatically alter the way they're built, there will be no role for him. So the same problem will remain.
Face it, they got him just to do it (apparently it's fun to stack player on top of player) and to keep him from the Spurs. He is an asset, though, so he could be included in a trade for a shot creator on the wing (Jackson?). That's probably the most likely scenario, because he has no role on the Mavs.
This isn't sour grapes, either. If the Mavs/Spurs were interested in Murphy and he chose the Mavs, I'd be saying he made the right choice.
