Now that we have Bertans anyway, picking Joseph early didn't hurt us. It might actually help us if Bertans has buyout issues, since we got him in the 2nd round and can contribute more.

I'm not even bitching about tonight (although I hate the stuck in the middle stuff). I'm just asking questions as to the logic of the moves. IMO nothing the Spurs did tonight has the risk of having extreme impact either direction.

I do think in a bubble the moves have more upside than down bc in order to give up Hill, they must be in love

The trade doesn't mean we're rebuilding.

People need to look at it as Anderson/Leonard for Hill. Think time will prove that to be an upgrade for us.

Pretty much what I said here:

Not necessarily.

An Anderson/Leonard wing combo will end up being a more talented defensive wing combo than Neal/Hill was last year. Which was a huge weak spot on the team and has been the past few years (Mason,Finley, Udoka ect.). Hill was better than Finley, Mason, Udoka but that's not saying much and at the same time his size hurt him a lot in money time on the defensive end.

This view on the move is certainly realistic, especially from a defensive perspective. And if you're worried about shooting, Anderson is a very good shooter and Spurs still have Neal in their arsenal as well. Those two can easily replace Hill's offensive production. Therefore, I don't see how this sets back the team into mediocrity. Now if they traded Parker for that crap pile of shit trade to the Kings then I'd agree with you.

This move could improve the Spurs in many areas. Only time will tell.

ESPN Insider

7(37) LA Clippers (from Detroit) Trey Thompkins 6-10 239 PF Georgia
The Clippers get one of the most talented scoring big men in the draft. But his conditioning issues and lack of toughness caused him to drop.

8(38) Houston (from LA Clippers) Chandler Parsons 6-10 221 SF Florida
Parsons is super-skilled for a big guy, sort of an athletic point forward. He wasn't always tough enough at Florida, but he worked out really well. If he plays tougher in the pros, he's got enough talent to succeed.

9(39) Charlotte Jeremy Tyler 6-11 263 PF
The Warriors wanted Bismack Biyombo, and Tyler is a poor man's Biyombo -- big, athletic and a good defender, but still raw offensively. Like Biyombo, he's a mystery because he's done almost all his work overseas, in Israel and Japan, after leaving high school in California.

10(40) Milwaukee Jon Leuer 7-0 223 PF Wisconsin
Leuer stays close to home. He's big and a very good shooter -- he can really spread the floor. If he were a better rebounder, he'd have gone higher.

1(41) LA Lakers (from Golden State via New Jersey) Darius Morris 6-5 190 PG Michigan
Morris may be the purest point guard in the draft. He sees the floor well and has great size. If he learns to shoot a little, he can be a poor man's Andre Miller.

12(42) Indiana Davis Bertans 6-10 210 SF Latvia
The Spurs got this pick from the Pacers in the Kawhi Leonard trade. Bertans is just 18 and a crazy good shooter. San Antonio fell in love with him at the Adidas Eurocamp. Very good value here. This is a great draft for Spurs.

The Truth #6
06-23-2011, 10:21 PM
First off, love the fact that RC and Pop showed some cojones and moved up in the first round. Never thought that would happen. I have no idea why anyone is freaking out over the loss of Hill. Nice guy, but he's shown he can't deliver. Good luck to him at Indiana. Win/win for both sides. We got a defensive player, a backup PG, and a Euro stash. Seems like a great draft to me.

I still think the window has closed but I love the mix of youth and veterans we have next year. We probably won't be as good, but I think the season (assuming there is a semblance of one) will be exciting. I expect a shortened season with an insane number of back to backs that will actually give the young players more burn then in a normal 82 game season. Also, the shortened season has the potential to be unpredictable - which can't hurt.

13(43) Chicago (Rights traded to Minnesota from Utah) Malcolm Lee 6-6 198 PG UCLA
The Bulls will send this pick to the Timberwolves. Minnesota was looking at Lee at No. 20, so he has great value here. He's one of the best perimeter defenders in the draft, and he can play both guard positions -- and the Wolves really need perimeter defense.

14(44) Golden State (from Phoenix via Chicago) Charles Jenkins 6-3 216 PG Hofstra
Jenkins was one of the best scorers in college basketball, with some similarities to Jimmer Fredette This is a very good get for the Warriors because of his ability to play both guard positions.

15(45) New Orleans (from Philadelphia) Josh Harrellson 6-10 275 C Kentucky
The Knicks bought this pick from the Hornets. The Knicks need size, and Harrellson has that. But he's a pretty big project, too. I doubt coach Mike D'Antoni will give him minutes. Then again, lacking big men, D'Antoni might not have a choice.

Look at it this way - forget about Hill for a minute and just look at the draft. We got two players in the first round, and (at least) a great stash in the second. When was the last time the Spurs took two players in the first round? That alone is pretty remarkable.

The Spurs traded up to get Leonard. They don't do that unless they really love him. Nobody was shocked when Loenard got picked at #15, so it's not like the Spurs traded Hill for a scrub. He was a legit 15 pick, and we haven't had anyone that far up the board in a long, long time.

We can debate whether Joseph was a first round talent, but the Spurs worked him out enough to think so. (Remember the meltdowns when they picked Hill in the first round.)

Bertans could fool us and be ready to play, although I doubt it. But even if he doesn't, he's a great stash. His shooting ability isn't going anywhere while he develops.

In terms of just pure draft, this was as good as you could hope for, from a team who always sits one of the last positions. We'll see whether Hill was too big of a price to pay, but that doesn't change the draft itself.

16(46) LA Lakers (from New York) Andrew Goudelock 6-3 198 SG Coll Of Charltn
Goudelock is a great shooter with crazy range. He's not really a point guard and he's undersized at the 2, but he comes up big in big games.

17(47) LA Clippers (from Houston) Travis Leslie 6-4 205 SG Georgia
Leslie is one of the two or three best leapers in the draft. He and Blake Griffin could own the dunk contest for years. Wish he could shoot.

18(48) Atlanta Keith Benson 6-11 217 C Oakland
Benson is one of the biggest players in the draft, and he was very productive. But his lack of strength and his reputation for being soft caused his stock to slide.

:tu

The Spurs managed to get a defensive SF, a backup pg, and a big to stash.

They got younger and addressed some needs while only giving up Hill. No complaints from me on this night.

ESPN Insider

19(49) Memphis Josh Selby 6-3 195 PG Kansas
Selby slid, in part because of some medical concerns that came out of the NBA draft combine. But this is a great pick by the Grizzlies. He has a ton of talent, and at this point in the draft, there is no risk. If he gets healthy and works hard, he can make it out of the second round the same way Monta Ellis and Lou Williams did.

20(50) Philadelphia (from New Orleans) Lavoy Allen 6-9 225 PF Temple
Allen is a solid player, a good rebounder. But he's not going to wow anyone. He just doesn't have a great motor.

21(51) Portland (Pick may be conveyed to Detroit via Denver) Jon Diebler 6-7 197 SG Ohio State
Diebler might be the best shooter in the draft. He shot 50 percent on 3-pointers. As a spot-up shooter, you won't find many better.

2(52) Detroit Vernon Macklin 6-9 243 PF Florida
Macklin is solid low-post player who improved greatly over his college career. He's tough and that goes over well in Detroit.

23(53) Orlando DeAndre Liggins 6-7 202 SG Kentucky
Liggins is one of the more versatile defenders in the draft. He's not a great offensive player, but he can lock down three positions.

24(54) Cleveland (from Oklahoma City via Miami) Milan Macvan 6-9 260 PF Serbia
Macvan is a bruiser, built like a tank and very physical. But he's a poor athlete and it's highly doubtful he's coming to the NBA anytime soon, in part because he makes too much money overseas to leave.

une 13 Update: Hanga was one of the players I thought really helped himself at Eurocamp. He didn't get off to a hot start on Saturday, but by Sunday he had found his rhythm and showed off some really nice NBA athleticism. In Sunday's All-Star game he led his team with 16 points in just 18 minutes. He's 6-6, has a 35-inch vertical and can get to the basket. He's a potential second-round pick.

Apr 22 Update: Hanga is one of the more intriguing 1989 international prospects out there. He's got the requisite athleticism to play in the league and he's producing. However, until teams see him playing at higher levels in Europe, it's anyone's guess how he'll respond. A potential second round pick.

Quick Q&A with Kawhi immediately after the draft:

The following are quotes from Kawhi Leonard following his selection in the NBA Draft.

Q. Kawhi, what does it feel like?
Kawhi Leonard: I feel great right now. I got picked to be on an NBA team. I worked hard. I finally accomplished my dream now, but it's not over yet. I've got a lot of work to do to make an impact in the league, and I'm ready to do any type of work I've got to do.

Q. There were reports that the Pacers and the Spurs have made a deal sending you to San Antonio; if true, how would you feel playing in San Antonio?
Kawhi Leonard: I feel good. I had a meeting with them, and I got a great vibe from them. Just any team I'm on, I'm happy with right now. I'm just going in, trying to do whatever the coach wants me to do to make the team successful.

Q. If that report isn't correct, you're going to a Pacer team that has a lot of players of your position, small forwards. What can you do to separate yourself and get yourself on the floor?
Kawhi Leonard: I can do a lot on the court. I'm very versatile. The coach drafted me, and he must have a plan in his head, and whatever his plan is, I'm ready for it.

Q. Your emphasis on rebounding in defense, talk about with the Pacers that, can get you immediate playing time, because they struggled on the defensive end, in the post, especially. Talk about how you're looking forward to that opportunity?
Kawhi Leonard: Yes, I take pride in defense. I'm just going to go in, do the same thing I did in college, get some rebounds and help my teammates find ways to win games.

Both Leonard and Joseph are 19 years old. Spurs went with very young prospects. When you add that Spurs have lost a good player in Hill, they will be worst at the end of the draft that they were at the start of it.

Spurs are taking a step back and have maybe accepted to be a mediocre team for the end of the Duncan's era.
