We once again go in as the top ranked team in the world, but we were also the top ranked team in '03 and '07 when Germany won it... and this time it's in Germany.

I like our chances though. It's amazing how good our women are to me, considering how our men struggle to remain a slightly-above average team. The women look like Spain out there.

Alex Morgan is pretty damn hot. Sydney LeRoux, who isn't on the squad but was unstoppable for the U20 squad, is also pretty sexy.

Was quite disappointed at how ugly the German senior team was...

The friendly I saw between the US and Mexico, looks like the Mexico team got their players from the buffet at Pancho's.

I swear I was watch the men's team out there. Looked dull and listless at the start and the lack of passion gets them in an early hole. Furious comeback in second half done in by poor finishing. It's pandemic for American soccer right now.

But unlike the men our Women are actually world class. We would have had to beat Brazil eventually anyway, might as well be in the quarters.

Germany eliminated again at home in 2nd Extra Time in a WC.

I think that will kill a lot of soccerhype (not only in germany), as the arenas will be empty again and germans themself wont care what is happening. as much as I like to root for Japan (and I'm from germany), but that will throw back womens soccer about 2-3 years (worldwide, as anybody is reminded, that noone really cares).

good news as all the girls will come to my basketballtrainings and not go to our first league womens soccer team! :-)

do you really think there is more than one exctratime? ;-)

Women's soccer was starting to become popular in france the last couple of years. And with Lyon winning the Champion's League and the French team in the SF, the interest will increase.:tu

Terrible fucking call. Penalty? Maybe, but not a straight red.

this is a non sequitur argument. IF you think it's a penalty, then it has to be a red, no? She was the last defender and denied marta of a goal scoring opportunity.

I don't think it was a foul. The denied penalty save was a joke. Lloyd should've been sent off though. There have been horrific calls with most of them against the U.S. Brazil's second goal was a direct result of a missed offsides. I'll admit it's easy to cry wolf when you're losing.

Nice goal by Marta.

What a great game. Had this been the men's squad, the media would be splooging themselves and debating its place in US Sports History. The women deserve the same credit.

Marta is a bitch queen and cry baby flopping all over the place when the US was shutting her down. A don't -give-a-fuck bitch too when she played well even after the crowd turned on her.

As for women refs, I've noticed that they tend to let the game flow a lot more. I've seen fouls that are automatic yellows in the men's game get ignored. Carly Lloyd really should've been given a second yellow and sent off for a deliberate hand ball. Women dive less and get up fairly quickly but it could also be incompetence.

She wasted more time than they added. If I remember correctly, she ended up wasting like 4-5 minutes but they only added 3. Also, it runs the run of play. Soccer is hugely momentum driven and you can liken that acting to the Hack a "x" strat in that it just kills the rhythm of the game.

Not dirty at all? Thats just laughable. Hard to take anything you say seriously after that. The Americans had some jersey grabs here and there, but they even got some bullshit yellows. One that comes immediately to mind was the one to Rapinoe when she had a sliding tackle - got the ball - then got a yellow. Totally clean play - yet got carded. Marta had a nice horse collar tackle that was worse than anything the US did to any of the Brazilians.

I don't think you and I watched the same game. There's a reason the crowd - which was not mostly Americans - turned on Marta and the Brazilians very harshly.

About as cynical a last 20 minutes as I've ever seen in a match of that magnitude, men's or women's.

It's one thing to remain on the ground after a challenge and milk it as time runs out; while it should be prohibited, it's clearly become part of the fabric of the game. The Brazilian's act was ridiculous, even by those lenient standards, and it was uplifting to see that nonsense punished with the karmic result of a loss. That she was carded in the process was also good to see, even if the card means very little.

With that, the US earned the win in the end -- Rapinoe's service was amazing and Wambach's finish made me lament the inability of the US men to find athletes who can be that effective in the air.

As an aside, I was stunned at how off Ian Darke and Julie Foudy both were about the length of an extra time game. As that clock neared 115:00, they both started panic talking as if the end were imminent -- as if extra time made it a 115 minute game. At just past 115, Darke talked as if there were merely seconds left and as if the US attack would surely be it's last chance.

Yes! At the 114 mark Foudly literally said the last minute. I was pretty shocked at that. Almost as bad as Taylor Twellman saying that Benny Feilhaber was offsides on a Goal Kick in an MLS game televised on ESPN July 4. Really its embarrassing when commentators - and all 3 of those should know better considering 2 played at very high levels - don't know simple rules.

He corrected here earlier when she incorrectly said there was 24 mins left (instead of 14 mins). Darke probably didn't want to embarrass her any further. Her emotional levels were in the shits. Overal, I think Foudy is a good commentator and doesn't make too many errors. The facts are usually left to the play by play guy anyway. I'd take her over Balboa, Wynalda, Chastain and many other US commentating schmucks out there.

I agree with this. I actually really like Foudy -- she's certainly credible and frequently insightful; she's definitely not completely bound to cliche in describing the game, which is refreshing.

I just thought Darke's willingness to go along was noteworthy. I didn't catch him correcting her on the 24' v. 14', but that seems likely. His alarm at 115', however, doesn't jive with a concern for embarrassing Foudy. He seemed to be genuinely concerned that full time was imminent.

Good story on the Women's Game and how men could learn from it:

http://theshinguardian.com/2011/07/12/the-women-could-teach-the-men-a-thing-or-two/

Less handbags, more play.

The most noticeable difference is the general flow of the game. There is end to end action and the ref’s whistle is often silent for prolonged periods of time.

Why is this you ask? Well aside from the Brazil V. USA quarter final, there is no blatant bitching or disrespecting of every call or Oscar worthy theatrics to deceive the referee. Women footballers, don’t get in skirmishes or “throw handbags” like some of their male counterparts.

They respect each other, their opponents, the referee and the game. If a hard challenge is administered, the attacking player gets up, dusts herself off, “sacks up” and gets on with the game, versus squirming around in agony desperately trying to remember which body part to clutch onto, so that their injury is more believable.

The ref’s on their part let the game flow, as they aren’t concerned if every tumble is real or a dive, because no self respecting woman’s player (not named Erika) would feign injury, as they posses more pride in their skill and toughness and believe that’s “not part of the spirit of the game”.

The referee’s also let many tough tackles and fouls go, as they know that the players are not going to bitch and moan, but instead will continue to play.

Yup....France has had a lot of opportunities to score, but our back line has been awesome.

The US midfield is concerning. They have most of the ball and are creating changes. Luckily, they've all been from long range and Hope Solo is in goal. Every time that 5 man france midfield get a steal from any of the US midfielders, it's instant danger because they have the man power up front. There can't be any careless turnovers. Carli Lloyd had one and Saubraun had another that were almost deadly.

It looks like the best defense against France will be offense. France looks vulnerable at the back...especially their GK. There needs to be better service into Wambach. O'reilly was good but her crosses were off. Rapinoe in the second half can and will help that. Rodriguez just doesn't have for whatever reason. He looks unconfident. She is not only losing the ball easily but hasn't looked dangerous at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Morgan comes in at halftime.

did you watch the game patna? France had all the momentum coming out of the second half. They equalized and dominated possession for the early part of the second half. Solo received a back pass and she blindly passed it to a french player right in the 18. It could've easily resulted in the go ahead goal for france....

....plus I never said the US defenders didn't play well. The whole US team seem to panic by absorbing a lot of body blows and giving away the ball to that French possession machine. Pia made brilliant tactical changes by putting Cheney in midfield and inserting Rapinoe and Morgan provided speed to pressure and provided more ball control. This neutralized the French attack EVEN THOUGH the US defenders played well....especially Suabraun will hadn't played a minute before this match. It'll be interesting to see if she starts over the returning Buehler.

That Solo pass was really bad. I know exactly which one you're talking about. She was under a bit of pressure at that point though - but she should have just cleared it.

France utterly dominated the 2nd half for the first 30 minutes. They didn't dominate as much for the next 15, but they were definitely getting the better of the US. But the US looked extremely dangerous on every chance they got this game and it was no surprise that Abby got a goal on a corner against the run of play.

France is very impressive technically, but their keeper is a huge weakspot and Abby the US did very well to exploit that on the limited chances they got. Great subs by Pia. One reason the USWNT does so much better is because they have a much better coach.

Megan Rapinoe is easily my favorite player on this team. She's just damn good. Amazing the US has her and Morgan to bring off the bench.

I got to watch the final 20 minutes with them and it was pretty freaking awesome when Abby scored and almost as good a few minutes later on the Morgan chip.

Not sure which organization got the projector set up but props to them.
