Anticipation is killing me.
New graphics engine, new AI, new everything. This game is going to raise the bar for every other game I think.

From what I've seen, graphics are meh... but that's normally not why you play those games.

And agreed, this game will be more about the expansive gameplay than anything else, and the previous Elder Scrolls usually didn't disappoint in that regard. An upgrade in the AI would be a welcome relief, as well.
I'm pretty sure defeating an ogre shouldn't be as simple as run 20 feet, turn and blast fireballs, rinse and repeat.

I saw the video and wasn't THAT impressed. It's a step above from Oblivion, but hardly top of the line.
Personally, I think the graphics/lighting/textures in the Skyrim screenshot look better than those in that screenshot from CoD, which comes off to me as a little comic-bookey (verbing weirds language!). Less static around the edges, and less blocky in appearance, particularly features like the hands. The lighting and lack of depth of field in the CoD picture makes it look very flat imo.
But thats why everybody has opinions. To each his own.
Both are absolutely stunning, especially when you compare it to where we have come from:

Oblivion was top of the line when it came out, IMO. Including the gorgeous bloom effects and HDR lightning. tbqh, it's hard to tell from single screenshots. The video I saw of Skyrim wasn't very high quality, so that might have been some of it, but in general I was unimpressed.

Yeah, if we both saw the same video, it looked like a phone/camera recording of a screen demonstration. I didn't even watch very much of it because I figured it wasn't doing the graphics justice.
And yeah, both of those screenshots are probably doctored or not actual gameplay, so probably not the best litmus. Can't wait to judge for myself, though. :tu

Skyrim debuts a brand new graphics engine as well as a brand new A.I., meaning BRAND new. This wasn't in the Fallout series. And to compare that screenshot with Skyrim is flat out ignorant bro. Every single thing you see in Skyrim was hand drawn, not put together by a computer to start with.
This game is going to raise the bar for all of the video gaming world when it comes to game art, details, and overall graphics and AI's. Skyrim is the next generation of video gaming graphics and RPG's.
The 20 minute video of gameplay during E3 was a TV camera looking at a TV. How can you go off of that????

In all honesty Black Ops is about average. MW2 looks just like it to me.
But the video making the rounds was at E3 filmed by a tv camera zoomed into an actual TV playing the game.

Atari 2600 user here, so we can get that out of the way.
Graphics add to the experience. Oblivion with shitty graphics is half as good, sells 1/4 of the copies, and Skyrim isn't made.
We don't live in the 70's anymore.

If your PC can run it I would say PC version all the way for the modding community alone . Many times some of them come up with a mod thats even better then what the games creators made. Think of it kind of like free dlc but usually very good content dlc.
I never got much into mods with Oblivion but I have tried some amazing ones for Fallout New Vegas, and that is about the only reason why I still play that from time to time.
However I think that any version is going to be very good

sure. but IMO not worth the effort for the minimal graphics improvement
No more of the same, boring voices every time..
Bethesda employed over seventy voice actors to record the voices of NPCs in the game; the total number of lines recorded for NPCs is over 60,000. The cast includes Christopher Plummer, Max von Sydow, Joan Allen, Lynda Carter, Claudia Christian and Michael Hogan.

Voices are nice... graphics much better than Oblivion (which I have been playing recently). I'm just 15 mins into the game and already saw the first dragon (can't avoid it). Duel wielding is pretty awesome, tbh.

Hate to be the breaker of bad news man, but both reviews I've read so far state pretty clearly that the console versions (again) spend a good portion of their time loading.
OTOH, the PC version's graphics are said to be high end enough that at highest settings, mostly everyone will be spending some time loading. Plus the extra draw capabilities (or w/e) that allow you to see huge distances make it so that basically whatever you got, the engine will push (unless you're DR :lol).

True, but it's enough for a profile + savegames. And the reality is that I was looking at Black Friday deals, and BJ Wholesale is going to be selling 16GB USB memory stick for $20. If you only play one or two games at a time, get a couple of those and you end up with a cheaper + faster storage than an official HD.

This game is, so far, billy badass.
I know I pimp my box here, or whatever, but I must say...this is one of the most gorgeous games I have ever laid eyes on. Ive got everything at absolute max settings, even draw distance for every object, and I havent dipped below 30fps. I max at 60fps (didnt see vsync in options), which is about where the game stays normally...until I go outside and look at the mountains. Instant dip with the outrageous draw distance.

The system crushes this game even at 1920 x 1200. I left all draw distances at max, but I turned down shadows from Ultra(?) to High(?) (whatever the top is, to the next one down...some settings only go to High). I'd rather keep the draw distances at max and tone down shadows. I could do either, but I prefer view distance (no grass pop-in, people pop-in, object pop-in...everything is loaded far enough away that you cant tell when it popped in.
Hasnt dipped below 50fps, even outside looking about. Inside, no matter what is going on (fire, fighting, shadow-play...all at the same time) its a steady 60fps with no drop.

This game is fucking awesome. Already logged 3 hours into it and really haven't done shit yet tbh, just killed the first dragon in main quest but that's it.
My character is a Mage, magic is sick in this game
Yeah I agree. When I started I swore I wasn't going to use magic.. then in the first dungeon I decided to try it and now it's pretty much all I use.
The game is just straight up amazing. I really am not a rpg guy and definitely not a wizards and magic guy. I had picked up Fallout New Vegas on a whim when it came out and was shocked to like it. I later picked up Oblivion and my God I hated it. The animations were terrible.. the land and atmosphere were boring to me.. and the combat sucked. Add in the fact the menus were a mess to me and I couldn't stand it.
But I've been working plenty of OT and really wanted a good single player game to hold my interest ( I rage quit too much in Dark Souls, for whatever reason can't seem to get into Arkham City, and Uncharted 3 got boring a bit past midway when I realized it was the same game as the second but with an annoying fighting emphasis). I picked up Skyrim yesterday after work and planned on playing it for a second then playing MW3 all morning... Never got on MW3 (minus about a half hour, to play with my cousin, before I went to bed ).

Those Frost Trolls are a bitch... I found the first one at level 6 (I'm playing Imperial, with pretty much only restorative magic), and it just whacked me. I'm level 10 now, just killed my 3rd dragon, but it's hard to tell what % of the game I've completed. I'm going to catch a break now that I'm in between missions and do some side quests to level up more.
I was playing Oblivion the last couple of weeks to warm up to this, and two things that are a major improvement are: 1) You can run. Even if it uses up your stamina, it's great when you're traveling major distances. 2) Being over-encumbered doesn't prevent you from walking. Now at least you can walk to Lydia and off-load whatever you need.
Really enjoying the game so far.

I gather you're on the mountain before the temple. Save the game right before the fucker. What I did was back up and let Lydia hurt the dude with arrows for a bit, then she goes on the attack. I loaded up healing on the left hand, axe on the right. While it was attacking Lydia I went and started axing it, once he hit you twice and leaves you with about 10%, use the shout to cause it to go dumb for a second, then start running away while healing with the left hand. Lydia will eventually come back up and attack it again. Repeat until you kill it. It took me easily 6 or 7 tries.

Something I learned when I was level 8 already: Go buy/sell shit at the Riverwood market. It increases your speech, and also gives you plenty of experience points to level up. I made the mistake to head out for the horn at level 7 or so, and you have to go through a place called the Labyrinth or something like that, that has 3 frost trolls on it. I managed to kill one, but it's just too impossible at that level. I ended up sprinting through the area to avoid them. I'm gonna head back once I'm level 12 or 13 and whack them then. It's just ridiculous because it's easier to kill a dragon or a mammoth than to kill those trolls.

Its cool that (it seems) we are having the same kind of introduction to the game.
I am lvl6, wear heavy armor but use mostly magic (i know, stupid) playing on Expert. The first dragon wasnt too difficult once I figured out a strategy to kill it (which consisted of hiding in the tower and only coming out to take pot shots). The second dragon on the other hand...I am failing repeatedly (side note, in one re-load of fighting the second dragon, two sabretooths appeared and both started attacking the dragon! They were doing some big damage too. I should have backed off, but instead I got close and started to attack the dragon. Well, the dragon flies, I dont. Once it went to the air, the sabretooths turned on me. One hit...it leapt from about 20ft away and I was dead. Awesome).
I saw my first frost giant probably at the same point you guys did. I didnt know if they were hostile, so I approached one and immediately noticed he was aggressive. I was maybe lvl4 or some shit...anyway, he comes in for a strike, I put my shield up to block and SMACK! I literally flew 200ft into the air (i said out loud "I can see my house from heeeeeeeeeere!"). It was awesome!
Hooked from that moment on. Game is incredible...absolutely fucking incredible.
***SEMI-SPOLIER ALERT***
.
.
.
.
.
A tip for new players. Dont steal weapons or armor early. I did and since you cant sell it and you dont have a place to store it, all it does is weigh you down and create an inventory nightmare.
Step right into the game and progress the main story until you kill the first dragon. First, you make money. Second, and more importantly, you get a "housecarl". A companion who you can use as a pack mule, because thats about all she is good for (oh, she is great diversion, too).
Make 5000 gold as soon as humanly possible. Its the cost of your first house where you will finally be able to store shit.
.
.
.
.
.
***END SPOILER***
I have this really weird obsession with books in these kind of games. I have to have every one, even if theyre not skill books. I like to read them...all of them. I have my housecarl (Lydia?) carrying at least 50-80 books right now, just waiting until I can afford the house to finally store them for reading.
I am having a blast. I havent encountered one "bad" bug yet. I have semi-fallen into the ground (about waist high), but thats it. You just hit jump and youre out...no biggie. Beyond that, nothing...which is really surprising for a game like this.
This game is literally going to rule my gaming life for a very long time, I think.

One thing I am doing that is probably hampering me in a big way is not using my perks. I have 5 stored up (being lvl6). I am a money whore in RPGs, I want the best of the best early...to have it, you need money. I am waiting until my speechcraft is 30 and then I am going to dump them all in there. Probably going to have 6-7 perks by that time, then I will be able to sell shit at almost full price, especially with the +50% sale price to vendors who are the opposite sex.

I would assume there are, yes. But none that I ave found so very early in the game.
Thus the suggestion of not stealing heavy shit early on, not until you have a place to store it for later when you do find a fence.

How often are dragons supposed to attack? I kept getting my ass kicked by one every time I left Whiterun, and I accidentally sent my quest helper to the quest location and so couldn't recruit a buddy to help me out. Finally I tried to "lure" the dragon to the western watchtower where soldiers were and it just flew overhead over and over glitchy style, even after I just walked away. Now I haven't seen a dragon for hours.

I saw one on a bandit camp.. I died twice there, and it only attacked on the first try... he disappeared once I got rid of them..

I don't get it. In "good" RPGs you cannot finish the game without the experience that side quests give you. In other words you cannot possibly finish the game without considerable side quests.

I am playing on Adept difficulty level and I am finally, at lvl16, slightly OP against enemies. Only because I have the very best gear money can buy (along with Lydia being in Twice Improved Dwarven armor from head to toe) and my gear is all enchanted with +magicka and regen and -20% Magicka in Destruction.
Now I can finally stand to a dragon without running away/around things to break line of sight. Giants are still very difficult in pairs (as in, run away!) and I havent even tried to tackle a mammoth.
Up until now, I really had to plan the tough fights through before engaging (dragons, giants, groups of trolls, sabres, mages in general). I wouldnt say the game is uber-difficult, but I wouldnt say its easy either.
Those people bitching about ease probably didnt realize that when you enter a dungeon, it locks your level forever in that dungeon. Meaning, if I am lvl1 and am running around exploring everything I see, all of those dungeons you enter are now full of lvl1 difficulty enemies forever. So if you did a lot of exploring, you might be disappointed when you get on in the game and have to revisit a dungeon full of noobs.
Bethesda wanted to avoid the Oblivion unrealism of encountering road bandits in glass armor and weapons. Makes sense.
Mods will make this game infinitely more replayable. A mod that will most likely assign static levels for every enemy in game, no scaling.

This game probably isn't as deep as Oblivion in terms of sheer amount of loot, etc. No huge, algorithm designed dungeons/mazes just packed with high level armor and weaponry. No spells in septuple or more with almost no variation between them. No armor/weapon condition rating and repair hammer system. No novice all the way up through master level calcinators and alembics- just alchemy labs. In that sense it's more accessible, read easier. And I kind of miss some of that stuff, but it's not like Skyrim isn't plenty deep or doesn't have A TON of things going for it that Oblivion didn't. As far as the ease of combat- it feels about the same as Oblivion to me. But that's not the point, if you're playing this game for a pure combat challenge to expand the completion time, you're doing it wrong. My biggest quibble with the game is the dual wield system actually handicapping you in some ways. In Oblivion I could carry a torch in my left hand (which provided natural light and made me feel cool) and a sword in my right hand. With that sword I could block. I could also cast spells with that hand. Perfect. Now it's a choice between using the off hand for blocking or casting. Can't do both anymore with the primary hand. Bah.

no I'm not talking about just combat level. Just difficulty as RPG should be. For example, in a good RPG you cannot beat this Ogre unless you are at level 26 and have this crystal sword which you need to obtain by completing these 7 side quests. :D

Eh, I'm 17 hours in, level 12- and I still get fucked up on the regular. I mean, I'm sure there are games out there that are more difficult our whatever... But I couldn't imagine not playing Skyrim because of that. Dude, it's a game where you have four way fights with giants, dragons and fucking woolly mammoths. It's an insanely good game.
Oblivion's combat and difficulty adjustments were much shittier though. In Oblivion all turning the difficulty up does is make your attacks weaker and the enemy's stronger. Playing a "standard" style on the hardest difficulty (or even close to the hardest difficulty) in that game is impossible - it takes dozens of hits to kill even the shittiest of enemies, like the first rats in the sewer, while they kill you in 1-2 hits always.. there's literally no strategy that's effective.

If you want hard, just pick up demon/dark souls. Its impossible to please everyone but it looks like - from the outside since I haven't played it - that Skyrim has done a great job of pleasing a lot of people.

If you want that, go get an fps and crank the difficulty to eleven.
Good take. I have a memory that could only be graciously described as "unreliable", so thats why you dont see me compare games of the same series too often.

I actually like they got rid of the Oblivion's repair weapons. It was just a copout. Load up on repair hammers and off you go. It really ended up being a waste of inventory. Plus it was ridiculous: Kill 2 monsters and your titanium axe is half-broken? It was like weapons were made in China or something.

repair? mmm reminds me of this good game called Betrayal at Krondor. Repairing was a great part of the game cause you actually got better at repairing stuff and could even go above 100% which would make the weapon/equipment more powerful

I don't know that it matters much. I was looking online to see what other people were saying about the ending and there's a Youtube out there with a guy basically finishing the main quest at level 11, which is kinda crazy.
What I also was reading is that the radiant system they have in the game will keep on generating different quests over and over (the fetch/gather type) and randomize encounters with Bandits, etc, so potentially there's really no ending to the game.
I'm just trying to finish off what look like the most important side-quests. I'm also wondering if there's a level cap or not. I'm at level 22 and it doesn't look like I hit the leveling ceiling yet.

I'm 20+ hours into an Imperial tank mage. I liked the new casting system and wanted to try dual weilding a one hander and destruction spell, but find that it doesn't work too well. Destruction spells are too weak without dual wielding them, and you can't block with your weapon if you have a spell assigned to your off hand.
I always end up playing a thief in elder scroll games. I may just have to restart and do that this time around also.

From what I can tell destruction damage does not scale to level like weapon damage does. Which means you have to rely heavily on gear and perks to augment your damage. So doing a sword/spell combo will automatically gimp the shit out of you. I'm going to have to restart.

:lol I'm a redguard and I'm just going with it.. my character has leveled a bit on destruction and I have one handed weapon also high.. I've been using destruction and weapon to get my kills... and when the enemies have strong weapons I just take out a shield..
The dragons have been easy with that combo, rarely have to use my shield.. Not really sure what it is I'm going for, but I'm just gonna keep going.

Just the perks and increase in stats. Elder scrolls has always been more skill based rather than level based. Though leveling up non essential skills just to get more perks isn't necessarily a good idea just because the enemies scale up in difficulty.

only issue i have with the game is how poorly horses respond to the terrain. ive killed over 10 horses by flying off invisible cliffs or down pits that shouldnt be there. its probably due to my laughable frame rate though...damn i need a new comp.

Game is the shit, for sure. Storyline quests are a bit of a let down, though. By that I mean the main quest and the guild quests. The main quest's story itself is ok, but it is over pretty quick for the "main quest". They did that with Oblivion too, though. Guild storylines are done in like 5 quests. That's the biggest disappointment IMO. Morrowind guilds had long, epic storylines. You really felt like you were working your way up, where as in Skyrim you just finished your n00b quests and all of the sudden you are leading the guild.
That being said, there are plenty of "random" quests to keep yourself occupied, but I have the most fun just wandering around and finding dungeons to loot. Dungeons are AWESOME. Very well designed, especially the Dwemer ruins. Lots of traps and puzzles and whatnot.

well theres 2 main story lines. ones is the main quest and one is more militaristic.
im not racing to beat the game...have two characters that are polar opposites to get a perspective on the game. out of the races ive played, breton seems like the most legit. has starting points in both warrior and mage constellations, also the special ability and passives are great against casters. so if you want a hybrid character, bretons are the way to go.
ive already put in 40 hours and havent even done the summons quest yet. doing the optional ones for whiterun and on the imperial military quest line right now.
sooo much to do, and if you have another character with a completely different setup and decisions, its like playing two games at once.
from what ive seen, horses are all pretty much the same and are worthless unless you need to explore a territory. i dont want to pay the gold (too expensive) so i wait until night when im hidden and steal one (on the pc "t" is to fast forward). they have three speeds like your character (for pc, hold down alt to sprint/gallop). took me awhile to figure out if you click on your map you can quick travel to any place that you have explored, so i wouldnt buy a horse for the long run...youll end up running off a cliff eventually because of the terrain.
and yes theyre supposed to release a patch sometime around thanksgiving. a week after i think.
*spoliers*
....
so far ive seen 3 dragons but no trolls (dont want to from what ive read). i havent been able to solo a dragon yet and usually have to pull in other characters or animals to help out. most of the dragons come in deus ex machina fashion from both the storyline and optional quests. i dont know about the game systems, but steam has a nice set of achievements you can follow to really conquer the game instead of just beating it. 100s of hours of potential gameplay.
if you want to steamroll through all the optional quests before getting lydia after killing the first dragon, id recommend doing the companion quests until you get the two-hander swordsman following you. that dude WRECKS..so you can go into all the temples and bandit camps around whiterun and he'll basically solo everything for you.

game is great, but I'm still thinking Oblivion was better. Skyrim seems a bit more shallow, RPG elements stripped/dumbed down again (which is par for the course for RPG sequels unfortunately). and they could have recorded a few more conversation lines, especially for Lydia, she has only one response for everything.
also, (as I previously pointed out from the first gameplay trailers) Dragons are relatively very easy to kill. I routinely get raped by those Chauruses and even Sabre Cats on occasion, but Dragons? not even close, 4-0 so far, with no help on the last one, and I usually suck at combat.
if you're a Nord against a Frost Dragon, they have to breath on you for about a minute straight in order to kill you, a few power swings with a good weapon when they land and it's over.

Glad I'm not the only one getting raped by these damn saber cats. I've killed 5 dragons already and haven't even come close to dying, with the cats I'm 50/50.
The only way Oblivion IMO is better than Skyrim, is in the traits and perks area, I liked Oblivions way better. I don't like Oblivion's leveling system. It makes NO SENSE to even level up in Oblivion since everything levels up with you. You do all that work, and you never get the sense that you're progressing at all.
Skyrims leveling is about perfect to me. It jams the people that try to power level certain perks, but it also keeps your enemies from leveling right with you to a certain extent.
I agree, it is dumbed down from Oblivion, they could of spiced up the menu's a little more but all in all it's an awesome game.

I've probably gotten killed by a Saber once, and it was because I was trying to kill a dragon and it shows up out of nowhere :lol, but for the most part if you see it coming and you're not busy trying to kill something else... it goes down fairly easy, imo.. and I'm just level 13
I've killed only 3 dragons, I guess I should go with the greybeards..

I've killed 6 dragons now, smithing iron daggers is the way to go, now i can make orc armour and I have been running through everything because of it, although i regret putting so many skills in 2 handed weapons even though i knew 2 handed weapons suck from past experience i just thought maybe since i was an orc it would be better but i was wrong lol

I'm not a Nord and the frost dragons are a bitch, even at level 20+... I also just played Oblivion right before this one, and it really had it's severe flaws too, some of which I pointed out earlier. At least Skyrim doesn't have that feeling that you're doing the laundry every time you encounter an Oblivion gate.
I'm close to just taking a break from Skyrim at this point. I completed the war side quest and the elf-blood side quest. I'm still debating whether I want to become a wolf man. Anybody did that Companions quest?
the werewolf does nothing IMO not much stronger then your regular form and everyone comments about being hairy and stinky even when in regular form

I love my 2 handed hammer. It disregards 75% of enemies armor and staggers them. Before I returned the game, I went ape shit in Whiterun attacking everything, all merchants, guards, my companion(lol). Made it all the way into Dragons reach with about 15 people trying to kill me. I was smashing them left and right , trying to get to the Jarl or whatever to kill him. I couldn't find him.
With hammers, I just went anywhere(caves, adventuring) and power smashed someone, they staggard and then I'd finish them off with another swing. Animation was sweet.
and I still got owned by saber cats lol.

in my experience, you gotta block (with a shield) to beat saber cats. if I miss one block against 'em I usually die. gotta take out their stamina too if possible

I'm not used to dying man, fuck. I've probably died more in the last 3 days I've had the game than in the entire time I played Oblivion

damn its getting harder now that im lvl 15...mostly because all the "cinematic" fights negate stealth and im a thief. really have to use all my scrolls and potions to stand a chance.
spoilers...
wolf form is a godsend. bethesda really did a good job making sure its only used for hairy situations (zing!) but you really feel like youre kicking ass once you pop that sucker (tossing bandits in the air like ragdolls, regenning health/stam by eating their corpses, fearing them and clawing them while theyre running, etc.). if i pop it while fighting a dragon its gg.

Well, Bethesda fucked up. My PS3, along with thousands of others, can no longer produce a framerate remotely close to acceptable. Apparently when save files reach sizes 6MB or greater you begin to lag so much it's shocking.

patch coming out in a week to fix it.
ive decided that thieves stole this elder scrolls game. TWO guilds dedicated to them and an insanely badass armor set (nightingale set is so badass...once you get past the pc bug on the trinity quest). all the gold making abilities with numerous fences and impressive ability scaling. if you want a character with longevity...lots of "end game" things to do...go for the duel wield/archery thief. illusion is fun to throw in there as well. feels like batman or something...

While the gear is nice, I was kind of disapointed in the quest line itself. I was expecting less dungeon crawling and more... well, thieving. I'm working my way through the Dark Brotherhood quests now and having a little more fun with it. Having to assassinate a bride in the middle of her wedding and escape the city with all guards on high alert was fucking awesome.
