Tigers will handle the Rangers with ease. Verlander is easily better than CJ. Valverde>>>>>>>>>>>>>Feliz. Tigers Bullpen>>>>>>>>>>>>Rangers bullpen. Tigers starting pitching>>>>>>>>>>>>Rangers starting pitching. Rangers have the edge on offense, but pitching wins in the postseason. Plus, the Tigers bats aren't chop liver. Tigers in 5-6 games.

I'd love for them to beat the Tigers and successfully defend their AL pennant but I'm just worried that maybe DFW was already blessed this year with the Mavs. How many miracles can a city have in a year?

Rangers in 5

Wow, in 5? Rangers can win the series, but in 5? With Verlander set up to pitch game 1 (and thereby game 5)? And with all those lefty starters against a predominantly right handed hitting Detroit line-up. 5?

Shrugs. Ok.

stretch
10-06-2011, 11:58 PM
regular season and playoffs are two different things

Lakers owned the Mavs regular season

we all saw what happened come playoff time

the better team will win, regardless of what happened in the regular season. again, i'm not nearly as worred, as the Rangers were 2-6 against the Tigers this year, with 4 of the losses being only 1 run, and in all 4 of those games, either Beltre or Hambone were out. having those guys in the lineup could possibly be the difference between 2-6 and 6-2.

also, Colby and Holland both >>>>>>>>>>>> what they were earlier this season. if they keep that trend going, I definitely like their chances. Pretty much everything here on out is going to be on what Colby and Holland can do. If at least one of them can give a good performance in their cycle of starts, Rangers should do good. if both of them pitch well, there is no excuse for the Rangers to not win every series. Of course, we will just have to wait and see if thats the case, but I feel pretty good so far.

However, as good as Napoli, Genrty, and Beltre have been so far, Young, Cruz, and Hambone all need to step up. But I guess that's the beauty of the Rangers... there really isn't a truly weak link in the lineup. Cruz has probably been the weakest link; but we all know how deadly he can be. It would be really nice to wake him up, as it seems he frequently comes up to bat with guys on base, and just strikes the fuck out.

Yeah seriously.....i was thinking the same thing........how anyone has this as anything but a Rangers sweep is beyond me......

Verlander>CJ?? are you guys nuts? I would take Wilson, Lewis, Holland Harrison, hell even Perez over Verlander right now! This series isn't even gonna be close......Rangers.....team of destiny....has a nice ring to it doesn't it?......after our extreme drought it's our God given right to win the whole damn thing.....we're the only team that deserves it.....

I was looking up Verlander's splits and noticed he has somehow never pitched at Rangers Ballpark. And his start vs Texas in April was the only one of his career? Is that right? Doesn't seem possible. But that's what I saw.

well, my head says it goes 6 at least, if not 7. i see the same things you mentioned, and know that the Rangers over the past few years have struggled against Detroit. but I have a gut feeling they are going to play suprisingly well, and pretty much hand Detroit their ass.

again, logically, the series goes 6 or 7, potentially either team winning. this is just my gut feeling.

Jim Leyland announced his rotation for the series, but then later changed it. Now, it looks this way:

game 1: Justin Verlander
game 2: Max Scherzer
game 3: Doug Fister
game 4: Rick Porcello

Had he kept it the way he initially announced, Porcello (who has been less than stellar and particularly inconsistent) would have pitched both game 2 and game 6 on the road in Arlington. Scherzer obviously showed up against the Yankees and has confidence right now, but since he pitched a little more than an inning yesterday (33 pitches), he'll be going on short rest Sunday. Verlander did the same thing after the game 1 rainout and pitched fine. Either way, I think Leyland was going to take a gamble. But this way, even if Scherzer doesn't pitch well in game 2, I think Leyland prefers having Scherzer pitch game 6 if necessary over the young and inconsistent Porcello.

33 in game pitches is really the equivalent of a side session, which Scherzer would have thrown anyway. TBH, he worries me as much as Porcello, although he has the ability to be something that RP doesn't: great. He's going to befuddle Texas, or throw gas on the fire, depending on the consistency of his mechanics. If Scherzer is good (stays on TOP of his slider), Detroit wins, no questions asked. I just don't see the Rangers overcoming 6 potential starts of JV, Fister, and an effective Scherzer. If he sucks, it's going to be tough to take them out.

Delmon Young out for the ALCS with oblique injury. Not even on the roster.

Delmon was the Tigers' best hitter in the ALDS against the Yankees. He should be a big loss for the Tigers, and will put more pressure on Cabrera and Victor Martinez to provide consistent offense every game. Maggs will probably move into the 3 spot and he has hit fairly well over the past month. Ryan Raburn is expected to fill in at LF and has also hit the ball well in the second half of the season. It helps that the Rangers have left handed starting pitching because both guys would likely struggle against good RHP. But the loss of Young still is big for the series.

I'm so fucking tired staying up to watch that game after the long delays. I'm drained.

Wasn't a particularly exciting game. Not much offense. Verlander wasn't sharp. I think Murphy lucked into that triple a little bit. It looked like he was just guessing and hoping, but it was enough to lead to two runs. And Verlander once again showed frustration at the strike zone and left that fastball up right where Cruz could crush it. That first inning jam CJ Wilson got out of giving up no runs was pretty big imo. Cabrera and Victor really need to make an impact offensively for the Tigers to have a chance. New game tomorrow, hopefully they do.

Good game, Rangers. Let's do it again, tomorrow.

Definitely a good game. I was thinking for sure we'd lose this one. Verlander starting, Wilson had one of his worst starts in a while..thank goodness our defense was on. I'm drained also..feel like I was playing in the game myself.

Love that Gonzalez is getting some love. After what he's done with left handed hitters this year, and in the playoffs, he's earned it. Best bullpen in the league.

Mike Gonzalez trade keeps paying dividends

By Richard Durrett
ARLINGTON, Texas -- No matter what kind of career pitcher Pedro Strop has, the trade for LHP Mike Gonzalez at the August deadline was worth it.

Why? Because you trade a prospect for a player who can impact games late when they matter most. And once again, in Game 1 of the ALCS, Gonzalez was a huge factor in the outcome.

Gonzalez, obtained from Baltimore on Aug. 31, came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning to face left-handed hitting Alex Avila. The situation arrived after the second rain delay and Gonzalez was told to get ready about 10 minutes before the game was set to resume.

"That's more than enough time," Gonzalez said.

He warmed up and then threw just two pitches to Avila, getting him to ground out. Gonzalez was clearly fired up and celebrated with his teammates in the dugout moments later.

"The game is right there," Gonzalez said. "It's within one run and the guy gets a knock and you're down by two or three. It's something where you either go up or down. I was feeling pretty good. The energy shifted our way. That's always good."

It's the second time this postseason that Gonzalez has come in to get a critical left-handed hitter out in a big situation. He retired Johnny Damon on three pitches, striking him out in the eighth in Game 3 of the ALDS.

"Coming in here, I understood what I'd be going to be brought in for and that's to get that big lefty," Gonzalez said. "It's situational. You know you're a piece of that puzzle and that's what I have to do."

Washington said before the rain came that starter C.J. Wilson would have pitched to Avila as his final batter of his start.

"But the rain stopped it, so we come back and we brought out Gonzalez," Washington said.

From that point forward, Washington set up the bullpen the way he wanted with Alexi Ogando for the sixth and seventh, Darren Oliver for two lefties to start the eighth, Mike Adams for the final batter of the eighth and closer Neftali Feliz for the ninth.

Looks like you might be right.

Just checked the forecast and it looks like it will be slow, steady, all day kind of rain which is usually what cancels these games.

hopefully hes doing well, as i hate to see injury screw things up, but returning to the lineup, and returning to the roster are different things.

the fact that he was only put back on because they pulled Ordonez off says to me that he is still a longshot to be a lineup guy, as opposed to maybe pinch hitting late in a game.

i could be wrong though.

as awesome as Cruz was, Feldman was the true MVP tonight. he did a great job taking over for Dutch.

I think Feldman was the MVP up until the walkoff. Feldman kept us in the game and was excellent. But you can't ignore a game tying HR in the 7th and a walk off HR in extras. If it was anybody but Cruz, I'd agree with you.
