None of the players (Smith or Al Jefferson) really make sense from a reality perspective IMO. I think that is why you won't see anymore prominent "insert name" to Spurs rumors heading toward the deadline. No issues with me as this team is really damn good if healthy.

BINGO! I never get into that Spurs are the frontrunners for crap, seems to never come out to be true. I could care less either, this team is good and this could break up the Chemistry.

Chris Broussard ‏@Chris_Broussard (https://twitter.com/Chris_Broussard) In talks with ATL for Josh Smith, Wizards have said all but 3 players available: J Wall, B Beal & Nene

K.Seraphin and J.Crawford are good/young/cheap players...

Alex Kennedy ‏@AlexKennedyNBA (https://twitter.com/AlexKennedyNBA) The Magic and Knicks have discussed a J.J. Redick for Iman Shumpert trade. Other players (and maybe a third team) would have to be involved.

Yep, that's why it makes sense to push for the #1 seed so LAC can take down the FThunderfags & we can destroy LAC in the WCF & curbstomp MIA in the finals.

LOL wishful thinking there, only if it were that easy.

How come SJax massive expiring contract never seems to get mentioned in trade rumors? As a player, he doesn't appear all that valuable, and especially with the new luxury tax penalties under the new CBA I'm sure there's plenty of teams wanting to take on his expiring deal for some cap space.

I'm wondering what trade rumor you've been looking at that DIDN'T mention Jack's expiring tbh.

Speaking of Jack, where the hell is he? (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2013/02/19/healthy-2nd-half-is-spurs-no-1-goal/)

Notebook: Small forward Stephen Jackson did not accompany the team on its flight to Sacramento, and it is uncertain when or if he will rejoin the rodeo road trip. Jackson remains out on personal business, which caused him to miss the final two games before the All-Star break as well.

No news at all.

Just based on his tweet losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to u I really hope it's nothing that horrible going on with him, hoping this is just some plan by pop to get him to rest his finger but I doubt it hopefully we find out what's going on with him soon.

If it follows previous years pattern, talks should heat up today with possibly a first trade made.

Regarding Spurs, and for the first time in years, I would have no issue with Spurs standing pat at this trade deadline. Few weeks ago, I wanted them to trade Neal but it isn't an as obvious decision with Manu's recent injuries. Spurs have a very good team and I just don't see an obvious realistic trade that would make them significantly better.

No one in their right mind would take on that contract, especially with how he's played this season. The Nets have shot themselves in the foot with all the bloated contracts they've given Williams, Lopez, Johnson, Wallace, and Humphries.

Same. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be seeing if there's a steal of a deal out there (as I'm sure they're doing), but I don't think they need to be actively pursuing anything.

According to a report from Ken Berger of CBS Sports, there's a possible deal on the table (https://twitter.com/KBergCBS/status/303939430664777729)between the Milwaukee Bucks (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/milwaukee-bucks) and the Orlando Magic (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/orlando-magic) that would send J.J. Redick (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21613/j-j-redick) to Milwaukee in return for Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and a future first-round pick. However, that deal would reportedly depend (https://twitter.com/KBergCBS/status/303939583639420928) on the Bucks finding a home for Monta Ellis (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21527/monta-ellis).

That may end up being too high a hurdle to clear in the next few days, as Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Milwaukee doesn't have much going on (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--nba-power-rankings--spurs-have-staying-power-172638648.html) in terms of possible deals for either Ellis or Brandon Jennings (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/71910/brandon-jennings).

I gotta agree. The only move I could see making sense is trading Splitter for a player they'd rather pay max to in case Portland throws Hibbert money at him next summer; but Josh Smith isn't the kind of player I'd want to do that with and I don't see anyone realistic who is.

Ric Bucher ‏@RicBucher (https://twitter.com/RicBucher)
Not sure if the Spurs make a deal before Thursday, but a source says it won't be for Josh Smith or Al Jefferson.

"The Jefferson rumor never had substance to it because it would've put San Antonio into a difficult salary-cap position. The Smith interest apparently died upon discovering that Josh simply didn't have the requisite Spurs' DNA. Former NBA coach Sam Mitchell told me today that playing for the Spurs would be a great benefit to Smith and I agree; he's never struck me as a malcontent or bad guy or purposely undisciplined. He might not have Spurs' DNA now, but I believe he wouldn't reject a transfusion and it would make the most of the raw talent he clearly has."

Jackson + Bonner + Joseph + pick(s) for Jefferson is a wash salary-wise, leaving the Spurs below the tax. I can see why Utah wouldn't go for that, though.

(As anyone who reads the Think Tank knows) I'd totally take Mbah a Moute if the asking price was just expiring contracts. I'd much rather have him on the bench than Bonner, as he is what people want Leonard to become defensively.

I would be concerned about Toronto. Gay and Derozan went 19-43 to net 48 points. Since the trade, Terrence Ross has gotten very little playing time. They need to make some more moves to fix their offensive issues.

The San Antonio Spurs will likely move forward DeJuan Blair close to the deadline, ultimately accepting the best final offer for him, sources said. Blair has wanted a trade for more than a year, and clearly will not re-sign with the Spurs as a free agent this summer.
The Spurs had tried to canvass the market for a first-round pick, but have relented on that demand. The Spurs could get a second-round pick, or perhaps a player on an expiring deal in return. - Adrian Wojnarowski

I'd love to see San Antonio trade Blair for Fab Melo. I don't know why we would want an expiring contract when Blair is expiring. He will definitely have some value to the Spurs down the stretch. I am sure Pop will rest Tim at least 2 or 3 games before season's end and Blair will be better than anyone of simalar salary. If you can get someone like Melo who could be someone to develop then fine, but not just to ship Blair out.

With the Suns being ruled out, I would say Milwaukee and Philly have the best chances to land Smith right now, but Philly would have to give up Turner which would be unwise imo. And I can almost guarantee Smith wouldn't re-sign with Milwaukee so that'd be a waste, unless it's just to dump Monta Ellis contract onto the Hawks (which I also doubt Ferry would do). And I don't see Danny trading him to Brooklyn cause it'd be dumb to take on Kris Humphries bloated contract. So there's really not many options here.. I'm also a little surprised Dallas hasn't been mention more but I guess Cuban's just confident he can lure him in this offseason with a max deal. Then entice Dwight to sign cause he and Smith are good friends and have talked about wanting to play together.

Wonder if the Spurs would be willing to trade our 1st for Jones. He's still raw, but he's got good size at 6'9" 250 lbs and is pretty athletic. I'd compare his game to an underdeveloped Carl Landry.

I'd even try and throw Bonner in the deal, see if they'd bite.

If OKC can get this deal done they are 10 steps ahead of every other front office as far as payroll management. Perkins has played relatively bad all year. To get an interior defender like Gortat would great for them. At the end of the day you could basically say that OKC traded Harden and Perkins for Martin and Gortat. Not bad considering they were gonna have to let go of one of their big 3 at the beginning of the year. I can tell Sam Presti learned a thing or 2 with San Antonio by trading Harden at the beginning of the year instead of deadline day. Apparently Ferry did not. If this deal goes through, then well done Presti. :rollin

I don't fear Gortat at all. Timmy has way more problems trying to score on Perkins than on Gortat. Gortat is soft. Timmy eats soft players alive. Obviously Gortat would give us more problems because he can hit the mid-range and he is a good P&R player, but defensively I don't see a big problem. In fact, i like it.

Perkins has been pretty damn bad, and when motivated (playing for a contender/contract/or genuinely happy with situation) Gortat is a damn solid/versatile defender.

It's sort of like pick your poison defensively with perkins and gortat. perkins clearly has the better post defense but weaker in the pick and roll D. with gortat he's the better pick and roll defender but not as strong in the post. but offensively gortat is clearly better

02-20-2013, 11:47 AM
Why are the Suns in such a hurry to trade Gortat? I've heard the rumors, I just don't get them. He's a quality/skilled center. He may not be a number one guy, but he could be coupled with a number one and maybe morph into a number 2, but he is at least a number 3 guy. He gets no recognition because he plays on a bad team. But if he went to the Thunder, by virtue of playing with Durrant and Westbrook, he would probably be a perrenial all-star.

I can tell Sam Presti learned a thing or 2 with San Antonio by trading Harden at the beginning of the year instead of deadline day. Apparently Ferry did not. If this deal goes through, then well done Presti. :rollin

And who gave Perkins that fat extension that they're now looking to shed? They could have kept Harden if the Perkins deal wasn't on the books.

You are thinking about the 2011-2012 Gortat, Spurs no longer has Blair in the starting lineup, and without Perkins the Grizzlies could take them out tbh.

It`s not that. Perkins only give OKC post defense. Gortat maybe softer, but he is mobile, better P&R defender. It`s important vs Spurs and Clippers. Plus his contract expire after next season.

Per rotoworld Celtics are open to dealing Fab Melo for backcourt help. Now THAT would be interesting, though not sure who they'd want from us if Melo is a guy our FO is interested in. He's as much in the "project" stage as Baynes, but is much younger with much more upside

Against us in the playoffs Perkins was hitting jumpers like Ibaka anyway

I know a trade for Smith or Jefferson is unlikely. What I don't get is the report that the spurs would not be interested in either because of the salary cap issues. First obviously, the spurs would have to match salaries, and in either trades spurs could actually dump more salary than they would be taking on. Now, if the report about the salaries has to do with the spurs ability to resign a player after this year, then it makes a little more sense. Still, a one year rental that helps the spurs obtain a 5th championship would be deemed worth it IMO, especially if the package has to do jackson, spare parts, picks and rights to oversea players. If the spurs don't make a trade for Jefferson or Smith, I don't think it has anything to do with this years salary cap.

Wouldn't a Bonner + Blair for Mbah a Moute trade give the Bucks like 8 bigs?

I see Bruno's suggestion as more of a part of a multi-team deal as opposed to a straight-up trade.

Something like this:

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine/?tradeId=b7xqbjh

Where the Spurs get Mbah a Moute, the Bucks get Blair, Smith and maybe another player to make the numbers work, and the Hawks get Bonner and another expiring from Milwaukee in addition to some sweeteners. (I used Henson here, and I think that's a good price in addition to a first.) That give Atlanta some assets while not taking away much cap space. It gives Milwaukee a big to replace Henson while ridding them of a redundant player (Mbah a Moute and Smith pretty much player the same position), and it gives the Spurs one of the most versatile defenders in the league.

It's sort of like pick your poison defensively with perkins and gortat. perkins clearly has the better post defense but weaker in the pick and roll D. with gortat he's the better pick and roll defender but not as strong in the post. but offensively gortat is clearly better

Vast majority of his offense is finishing PnR (i.e. - a less efficient Splitter), and I don't think Westbrook is the right PG to bring that out of him.

Defensively, he is better on PnR that Perkins, but not a lot. FWIW, Suns bad defense has actually been slightly worse with him on the floor (1.09 ppp) than when he's on the bench (1.08 ppp).

Mitch Kupchak was on the radio right now on ESPN stating that D Howard is the future of the Lakers and that they would NOT trade Howard and made it seem they wouldn't even consider it. He stated he's received calls for Howard, but that he does not have interest in trading Howard. When asked about Gasol, his answer was totally different. He seemed like he was open to trading Gasol. He said "I don't see us trading Pau today or tomorrow." However, he was not for sure like he was when asked about trading Howard.

okc may not be as good without harden, but they sure did make out like bandits on that trade. martin, lamb, and a lottery pick! like okc didn't already have a bright future. and they still challenge us for best in the west. consider that and memphis trashed their chemistry, the lakers are on the brink of epic fail, and the clippers might shake up their team.

maybe a splitter trade would do more good than harm? it wouldn't be a good idea for winning this year, but the west is kinda sickly this season. i think the spurs can maintain competitiveness this year and next, while avoiding a timmy's gone tank fest! how bout a little cap space and quality youth?

spurs get cavs get
tyler zeller splitter
omri casspi blair
cavs 1st 13 bonner
cavs 2nd 13 spurs 2nd 13

spurs like casspi. zeller has starting minutes experience, good coaching background, averages a high amount of assists, etc. cavs 1st stands a good chance of being in the lottery. cavs second is a huge upgrade from the spurs 2nd. could be the difference between a draft and stash, or a sleeper.

cavs get another brazlian pick and roller, we've seen how they do with the other one. that alone could save their playoff hopes. they've also seen blair tear it up in the city closest his home town. i think cavs are one of a few teams that could get actual value outta blair. and i think the cavs know that. bonner is a salary dump. he's just part of the cost of doing business. the spurs aren't dumpin splitter cause he stinks, it's about the money. blair on the other hand... well at least he's gonna give the cavs some value, probably re-sign for cheap. so they get the bill for bonner.

as for the picks. well a bonner bill, a decent rookie big, and a casspi dump aint worth the spurs chemistry and quality bigs. they gotta give up that juicy 1st too. hell! with splitter/quality blair on the team and the quality of this draft, it may not even be so juicy. they're gonna have to swap 2nds just to give a little insurance on that juice.

Methlahoma got hosed in that deal. 1-dimensional Martin sucks and won't be back next year unless he takes a pretty sizeable paycut, Lamb was one of the most overrated players in college last year and can't earn any minutes this season, and that Toronto pick will likely end up somewhere around 8-15 or so in a horrendous draft. This isn't last year when you can pull a Harrison Barnes or a Drummond with a mid lottery pick.

That package is laughable. Paul Pierce is still a stellar player that is incredibly popular in Boston. Humphries and Brooks are afterthoughts that the Nets have been trying to get rid of since the beginning of this year. So essential it's Pierce for a lame draft pick. Heck, that's as bad as the Bonner, Blair, and a first rounder for Pierce.

I think as Spurs fans we should hope Garnett doesn't end up in Clipperland as that would improve them a lot. On the other hand, Bledsoe would be gone and he's a scary bench player who can turn a game in 5 mins. Still, Clips with KG become super-scary.

Bledsoe/D.Jordan>>>KG

Bruno
02-20-2013, 06:21 PM
Agreed but everything I've read is saying that the Clippers don't want to give up both Bledsoe and Jordan, just Bledsoe. But it wouldn't matter anyways unless KG agrees to waive his no-trade clause which he's said he won't. My guess is neither team makes any deals by the deadline.

Well, they don't want to give up both Bledsoe and Jordan for KG but in the trade I've proposed, they also get a not so bad player called Paul Pierce.

Joseph and Blair don't have that kind of value but you should know it.

What I find interesting is that Spurs wants to stick with Joseph despite the fact that he doesn't play at all with Spurs this year. They might think he has a chance to be a part of the rotation in the future. I like it because, even if he is raw/young, I find that Joseph is an intriguing player.

To me, they used the farm system as a safe way to keep him around like if he went to Europe or played in college still, but they own his rights. He's basically being taught to be a perfect Spurs (combined with his skill set). Him and Nando are probably their future backups. Both bring versatility to their positions: CJ (steady PG game and solid D), Nando (crafty creative play maker who can play 1-2-3 positions with his size).

I like that the Spurs are finding versatile guys. It helps a lot.

Yes, I know that there should be no way for Toronto to agree to that trade. But I suggested that because really, there's not much they have at this point to give for such a small contract. The Spurs aren't looking to just dump Joseph (as you already said), so they'd have to get something of value. Toronto can't guarantee a pick for many more years, and their only young assets are Ross and Valanciunas. They're just not a good partner.

Perhaps a Joseph/Blair/Bonner for Amir Johnson deal would interest the Spurs though.

I completely agree with you on Joseph, though. With the way De Colo, Mills and Neal have played, there's no reason to think that Joseph couldn't get a chance next year, or even this season.

Interesting note. I'm probably making too much of it but this tells me:

1. Spurs still like Joseph. That hasn't been obvious this year but this report tells me that the Spurs aren't looking to salary dump him or anything.

2. The FO must see a way that Joseph can become the backup point guard next season. Neal and/or Mills must not be locks to return.

3. Spurs aren't desperate to shed money. The easiest way to clear salary would be to salary dump Joseph somewhere. Doing that wouldn't hurt the depth at all for this season.

4. Piggybacking off of #3, a Blair trade must be there for the taking if Joseph isn't being made available.

The investment isn't exactly the than for a player who is in Europe. Spurs have still spend $3.2M in salary for Joseph and will have to decide whether or not to invest an additional $2M at the end of next training camp.

I agree with you that a Joseph/De Colo back court looks good on paper. I thing that De Colo best spot is as a creative SG. The only thing that doesn't work with that scenario is that Spurs have really used De Colo as a PG this year. Do they think it's his best position or at they playing him at PG because they don't have another option?

Do they think it's his best position or at they playing him at PG because they don't have another option?

I think of Nando as I thought about Barry. He could do it all (speaking offensively only), in that sense. He's a versatile player who can play any position. Spurs love those guys, and it makes sense. Nando is big enough to play 3 (in spot minutes off the bench), but can also play 1 or 2.

As for Joseph, they've known about him since RC'd adopted son played with him at Texas, so it makes sense why they'd have a crush on him still if he has continued to meet all their demands (and it seems like he has). Joseph is a Junior in college at this point, and last season was a mess without a training camp, so I wouldn't put too much stock in how "he's been treated."

I feel like they have flexibility to take Joseph through the system slowly while:
-Evaluate Neal to see if he can get better, but also increase his trade value. Basically improve the team through his (somewhat unique) skill set, even though he has big flaws elsewhere
-Evaluate Mills. Similar to Neal, but has a few other weaknesses, but is younger and has possibly more potential with more work.
-Evaluate Nando - too many guys to give enough time to. Nando is older and more experienced, so he needs the NBA evaluation period a bit more, while CJ is a little bit more raw and just needs more hands on guidance (kinda like the college experience)

And regarding next season backup PG slot, Dwight Buycks has been awesome this year in France. I don't know if Spurs are still following him after his summer league with them but I wouldn't be surprised to see him ending with a NBA team next season.

If they liked him at all, and made the suggestion to play overseas, then they likely are keeping their tabs. Spurs have done well to create a full network overseas.

Doubtful unless it was a great deal. And I don't see Blair + a late 1st round pick being that appealing to the Rockets, unless they're just really trying to cut payroll to make a run at Dwight Howard or Josh Smith this summer. But, Morris is only making $3 million over the next season and a half, with a club option for 2015 for $4 million.

even if the Spurs contend next year LA is likely out of the playoffs with a terrible Bible Kemp, 40 year old Nash, older Kobe who says he would probably be playing his last year and possibly with Gasoft

In the first LA meeting Parker was horrible
he was still in that begining of the season slump where he couldnt penetrate or hit anything and would only take like 4 shots a game
in the second meeting Hill/Howard/Gasol were out and the Spurs took it easy
it will likely be a gentlemens sweep if they meet in the playoffs
and i dont buy that Lakers will make the playoffs by getting on a hot streak
if they get in it will be because of injuries to other playoff teams or incredibly cold streaks like what is going on in Golden State

No, once a player is traded, to turn around and trade him again immediately, he has to go out alone, no other players. His contract doesn't match Smith's.

Pretty sure Patterson is close friends with Cousins after their time together at Kentucky, gives another angle as to why the Kings may have done it.

Still, :lol Kings for trying to appease Cousins.. the guy has talent but they would be best getting rid of him, tbh.

...great idea. i wouldn't laugh. the kings were making us work last night. maybe a little kiss ass on cousins is a good route to travel.

I'd love to avoid the Lakers. The Mavs though, don't know if they can keep up with us. Maybe even the Blazers, though they've dropped 6 straight are still tied with the Lakers.

I know the playoffs are all about matchups but why are some here sweating the prospects of facing an 8th seed? LOL. If we have any real aspirations to win it all, then an 8th seed should be the least of our concerns. Sure, it's happened where we've lost to an 8th seed but we were missing Manu and TD wasn't 100% at that time. Oh by the way, if the Warriors keep struggling, we may very well face them as an 8th seed. If you want to talk about who would be the easiest 8th round matchup, that's a different story and the Warriors would probably be our easiest matchup since we own them.

:lol Both Morris twins play in Phoenix now!

I used to always laugh at PHO. It seemed any time there were twins in the NBA, they got the shitty one. I guess the solution to that is to get both. :lol

That rule is pretty easy to get around in two ways:

1 -- if the trade has not be officially accepted, then the Rockets can negotiated with the Hawks and just include them as a fourth team.

2 (more interesting) -- The Rockets could do a trade like Robinson and filler for Smith and Petro. Robinson for Petro would actually be a separate deal, but it would only happen because of the larger context. This type of split trade violates no rule, and it's used often.

This trade is a bad news for Spurs.

Rockets will be weaker for the rest of the season with only rookies at the PF slot. It's now more likely that they miss the playoffs.

This trade could have turned Spurs first round opponents from the Rockets to the Lakers or Mavs. :bang
