Not if they busted the door and exclaimed "Police, we have a warrant!"

Though I'll be ever so grateful to discover they're actually cops and not marauders portending to be cops. That's why (no knock) should be outlawed and was supposed to be after that case back East a few years ago, but is was not and now this youngster is dead. And it won't be this time either. His parents we'll take the check and leave the (no knock) out of it.

Pray for me. Like the victim, I'm licensed to carry with no criminal history and will use my weapon on anyone breaking into my home. Just because someone shouts "police" doesn't make it so. That's how Kim Kardashian got robbed.

...my sentiments exactly. So, outlaw (no knock), no exceptionsPERIOD

That way there can be no crooks hiding behind the badge in order to get into your home to exact murder and mayhem. But, the victims of (no knock) go for the quick check, because it's easier and because perhaps (gov't) is using that edge (you get the check, (no knock) stays, deal?).

(no knock) is and always has been an American tragedy. It's humiliating to even have it on the books.

A police officer in Georgia has been placed on administrative leave after shooting multiple innocent people while firing at an alleged car thief.

The Columbus Police Department issued a press release Monday explaining the situation.

The press release did not mention the name of the officer or the alleged thief.

On February 7, the officer was investigating a vehicle in the area of Riverland Drive that was suspected of being stolen.

The driver of the vehicle drove toward the officer in an attempt to flee the scene. The officer then pulled out his weapon in the direction of the suspect and fired.

The suspect was able to flee the scene and elude the police. Police later found individuals who were struck by gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident.

Sheriff Sex Crimes: In February, ex-Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain was sentenced to multiple life sentences for multiple counts of rape and incest related to acts committed before he was sheriff and starting from when Strain was a teenager. Testimony from victims alleged really horrific, long-term acts of sexual abuse and rape of people Strain was close to, including relatives and friends. Strain was also found guilty of bribery and fraud related to a kickback scheme (https://www.justice.gov/usao-edla/pr/former-st-tammany-parish-sheriff-jack-strain-charged-16-count-indictment-kickback-and) involving the labor of incarcerated people -- a plan that basically involved creating a puppet company involving friends and relatives to “purchase” the labor people incarcerated in Strain’s jail and provide Strain personal profits from the arrangement. (He will be sentenced for this case on March 9.)

Strain was sheriff from 1995 through 2015, which means people elected him four times. One local outlet framed it as a “rise and fall (https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/local/northshore/rise-and-fall-of-former-sheriff-jack-strain/289-e3579454-c950-489a-864a-77e57bd3ec3a).” Is it though? Or is this a story that is more about the people attracted to sheriffs’ offices and law enforcement more generally?
Strain did after all say that suicidal people in jail needed to be “caged like animals (https://www.laaclu.org/en/press-releases/aclu-demands-st-tammany-sheriff-stop-treating-suicidal-prisoners-animals).”

In addition, local Memphis news (https://www.newsweek.com/ex-deputy-accused-rape-takes-plea-avoids-jail-sex-offender-registry-1685252) told the story of a white Shelby County sheriff’s deputy named Brian Beck charged with the rape of a 14-year-old, who was granted a plea deal with no prison time. This came from the same Shelby County District Attorney, Amy Weirich, who had no problem charging a Black woman who accidentally voted (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/03/voter-fraud-election-crime-sentencing-racial-disparity) despite her ineligibility – because of incomplete and missing paperwork; Pamela Moses lost at trial and was sentenced to six years in prison.
In light of multiple other sheriff/ sheriff deputy sex crimes, I idly wondered, how common is this, and thus I Googled “sheriff sex crime” and got pages and pages of this.

White police officer found not guilty in vicious beating of an unarmed Black man in San Francisco

San Francisco Police Officer Terrance Stangel was found not guilty of three felony counts in what the Los Angeles Times reports (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-03-07/san-francisco-police-officer-terrance-stangel-not-guilty-in-beating-of-dacari-spiers)as

the first excessive-force trial for an on-duty officer in the city’s history.

The jury was deadlocked on a fourth charge of unlawfully beating Spiers under the colors of authority.

On Oct. 7, 2019, Decari Spiers was out on a date with his then girlfriend at Fisherman’s Wharf. The couple had not committed any crimes.

When two officers arrived, allegedly following up on 911 calls about a man choking and dragging a woman, Spiers was confused when Officer Cuauhtemoc Martínez grabbed him and Stangel began beating him.

“It is undisputed that officers did not observe any physical violence or unlawful conduct by either of them,”

ordered Spiers to get against the wall, but according to prosecutors, neither officer gave him reasonable commands before Stangel started beating Spiers with his baton, landing at least seven blows.

Spiers was never charged with any crime and later received a $700,000 civil settlement from the city.

“This case was sabotaged from day one by police officers and investigators

who simply will not allow police officers to be held accountable for perpetrating violence,”

left Spiers w/broken leg

illegal to take photos or video recordings of police officers (https://www.fox10phoenix.com/tag/crime-publicsafety) in some circumstances

illegal to record within 15 feet (https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/new-arizona-bill-would-prevent-people-from-filming-police-officers-closer-than-15-feet-away) of an officer interacting with someone unless the officer gave permission. :lol

It also now allows someone who is in a car stopped by police or is being questioned to tape the encounter and limits the scope of the types of police actions that trigger the law to only those that are possibly dangerous.

Fraternal Order Of Police Helps Boost Telecom Smear Campaign Against FCC Nominee Gigi Sohn

Since they can’t attack her actual record, telecom and media giants have been engaged in an absolutely grotesque smear campaign (https://www.techdirt.com/2022/04/19/telecom-lobby-targets-senators-manchin-kelly-and-cortez-masto-in-bid-to-scuttle-sohn-fcc-nomination/) involving getting various groups to

falsely accuse Sohn of disliking minorities (https://www.techdirt.com/2022/04/13/big-telecom-astroturfers-smear-fcc-nom-gigi-sohn-in-arizona/), hating rural America (https://www.techdirt.com/2022/04/19/telecom-lobby-targets-senators-manchin-kelly-and-cortez-masto-in-bid-to-scuttle-sohn-fcc-nomination/), or trying to censor conservatives (https://www.techdirt.com/2021/12/06/gop-claim-that-biden-fcc-nom-gigi-sohn-wants-to-censor-conservatives-is-att-rupert-murdoch-backed-gibberish/).

With the entire GOP in loyal lockstep (as is usually the case), telecom’s now focused on flipping the votes of Senators Mark Kelly of Arizona, Catherine Cortez Mastro of Nevada (https://www.politico.com/news/2022/04/18/midterm-politics-endanger-bidens-tech-agenda-00025417), and Joe Manchin of West Virginia to kill Sohn’s nomination dead.

Joining that campaign is the Fraternal Order of Police (https://www.techdirt.com/2021/12/13/fraternal-order-police-opposes-biden-fcc-nom-because-shesupports-encryption/) (FOP).

For the last six months, FOP has been spewing all manner of gibberish complaints about Sohn,

including the idea that her nomination should be opposed because she (gasp) supports encryption (https://www.techdirt.com/2021/12/13/fraternal-order-police-opposes-biden-fcc-nom-because-shesupports-encryption/).

I’d wager much of this being coordinated by AT&T, which has a long history with precisely this kind of greasy shit (https://www.techdirt.com/2017/02/15/comcast-att-are-paying-minority-groups-to-support-killing-net-neutrality/) and has an existing partnership (https://about.att.com/story/2020/fn_national_fraternal_order_of_police.html#:~:text =The%20National%20Fraternal%20Order%20of%20Police% 20(FOP)%2C%20the%20largest,FirstNet%20%E2%80%93%20 America's%20public%20safety%20communications) with FOP.

you can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride

This case began when one Anthony Novak of Parma, Ohio, created a Facebook page called “The City of Parma Police Department.” His page parodied the real Parma Police Department’s page in an overblown and obvious (https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/22a0090p-06.pdf) way, offering community outreach services like “free abortions in a police van” and advertising a “Pedophile Reform event” featuring a “No Means No” learning station. When the real Parma police learned of this outrage, they responded in a normal, measured wa—haha, no, they somberly announced (https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/22a0090p-06.pdf) a full investigation and sent a letter to Facebook demanding that it retain all the data related to the fake page, a step that typically precedes litigation or, in this case, criminal charges. They then issued a press release warning the town about the fake page, as if a parody ad offering abortion care performed by cops were a grave threat to public safety. Novak deleted comments that noted his page was fake, and posted to his fake page the real police department’s warning about it. After that, he took the page down, as he was worried he’d get in trouble.

He was right. The page’s deletion was not enough for the intrepid members of the Parma Police Department. They got a search warrant (https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/22a0090p-06.pdf) for Facebook, learned Novak was the author, and arrested him, charging him under an Ohio law that makes it a crime to use a computer to “disrupt or impair” police functions. Novak spent four days in jail before a jury acquitted him. Eventually, he brought this lawsuit alleging—and this is a technical term—a truckload of hilariously obvious First Amendment violations.

In a normal world where the federal courts still worked, this isn’t even a close case. Parody and satire is protected speech under the First Amendment, and the more obvious the parody, the more likely it will receive protection. Previously, the Supreme Court has acknowledged (https://casetext.com/case/campbell-v-acuff-rose-music-inc?resultsNav=false) that parody can “provide social benefit,” and that parody necessarily borrows from the original to make its point. Even bad parody is covered; as a New York federal judge wrote (https://casetext.com/case/yankee-pub-inc-v-news-america-pub-inc?resultsNav=false#p280) in a 1992 case about trademark infringement, “First Amendment protections do not apply only to those who speak clearly, whose jokes are funny, and whose parodies succeed.”

But in Novak, Sixth Circuit didn’t reach the free speech issues. Rather, their decision turns on qualified immunity, the judge-created doctrine that protects police from civil lawsuits when they are alleged to have violated someone’s constitutional rights. Under qualified immunity, cops are not on the hook even for flagrant violations of rights as long as their conduct didn’t run afoul of “clearly established” law.

As Hannah Mullen has noted (https://ballsandstrikes.org/legal-culture/how-judges-turn-legal-rights-into-hollow-promises/) for Balls & Strikes, the Supreme Court has since read this loophole so generously that cops are presumed to have no knowledge they’re doing something wrong unless a previous case with nearly-identical facts exists in which a court decided cops did do something wrong. Under the prevailing view of qualified immunity, you could avoid a conviction for going 120 MPH in a school zone simply because previous convictions had only dealt with speeds of up to 85 MPH, and you therefore didn’t have enough firm guidance not to push the needle into the red.

And that’s what the Sixth Circuit decided here, too, in a decision (https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/22a0090p-06.pdf) from a conservative all-star panel of George W. Bush appointee Chief Judge Jeffrey Sutton and Trump appointees Amul Thapar and Chad Readler. Thapar, writing for the panel, asserted that Novak couldn’t cite to a case that was exactly the same as this case—one that “clearly establishes” that “deleting comments or copying the official warning is protected speech.” Thus, the police couldn’t have known that arresting him for running a joke Facebook page was wrong.https://ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics/qualified-immunity-facebook-page-novak-parma/

Another police hoax -- made up evidence, fictional informant -- that will be ignored by board conservatives even after Minneapolis pays hundreds of thousands to settle.

A Minneapolis man who was the subject of a botched drug raid (https://www.startribune.com/minneapolis-drug-case-falls-apart-raising-questions-about-existence-of-secret-informant/600056732/) has filed a federal lawsuit against several police officers, alleging they needlessly beat him during a traffic stop and one of them later "fabricated and/or misrepresented evidence to a Hennepin County judge" to obtain a warrant for his home.

The lawsuit alleges Minneapolis officers Tony Partyka, Neal Walsh and other unidentified officers violated Moore's civil rights by "unnecessarily and recklessly using excessive force to pull Moore from his vehicle, throw him to the ground" and beat him on the side of the road during a routine traffic stop, leaving Moore with a broken nose and other injuries.

A few months later, Partyka violated Moore's civil rights again "as retribution for Moore's complaints to the Minneapolis police department" about the use of force when he led a SWAT raid into Moore's north Minneapolis home with a no-knock warrant, according to the suit.

Hennepin County Judge Paul Scoggin ultimately threw out the drugs and other evidence recovered in the search, after Moore's public defenders exposed what Scoggin called a "reckless disregard for the truth" on the part of Partyka.

"Unfortunately for Moore, the warrant was only quashed after he had unjustly been forced to spend over seven months in jail when he was arrested after the illegal search of his residence," the lawsuit states.

The Minneapolis City Attorney is reviewing the lawsuit, but declined to comment on the allegations, said city spokesman Casper Hill.

The Star Tribune first reported on Moore's saga in May 2021 (https://www.startribune.com/minneapolis-drug-case-falls-apart-raising-questions-about-existence-of-secret-informant/600056732/), after the charges against him were dropped. Chief among the questions that unraveled the case: Did Partyka embellish — or fabricate — key information from a trusted informant?

"We think that the confidential informant in this case may not have existed," said Tanya Bishop, one of Moore's public defenders, in an interview at the time.

Customs officials have copied Americans’ phone data at massive scale

Contacts, call logs, messages and photos from up to 10,000 travelers’ phones are saved to a government database every year

U.S. government officials are adding data from as many as 10,000 electronic devices each year to a massive database they’ve compiled from cellphones, iPads and computers seized from travelers at the country’s airports, seaports and border crossings, leaders of Customs and Border Protection told congressional staff in a briefing this summer.

The rapid expansion of the database and the ability of

2,700 CBP officers to access it without a warrant —

two details not previously known about the database — have raised alarms in Congress about what use the government has made of

the information, much of which is captured from people not suspected of any crime.

CBP officials told congressional staff the data is maintained for 15 years.

As we were finishing the story, Alene got another juicy tip that checked out.

Those two deputies, along with others with ties to the sheriff, have since come under suspicion of wrongdoing.

Earlier this month, the Sheriff’s Department announced it was conducting a criminal investigation into “irregularities discovered in the CCW application process” that it

described as a “possible long-term scheme to defraud” county residents and “weapon law violations.”

The two deputies, Gisel Del Real and Carrie Robles, were relieved of duty."

Prison Telecom Company Forced To Give Back Half The Money It Stole From Families Of Prisoners

Every year, American families spend more than $1.4 billion (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/30/staggeringly-high-price-prison-phone-call/) calling their relatives in prison.

This is indicative both of the incredible number of people we have in prison,

Following the resolution of a class action lawsuit (https://www.protocol.com/policy/fcc-gtl) alleging that GTL had unjustly enriched itself by converting the money in "inactive" accounts to revenue,

the company will be required to pay back $67 million of that money in refunds and credits

to plaintiffs who had their accounts deemed inactive after less than 180 days,

many of the people who use the company's services are using them because they stole far less than $121 million.

Revealed: US Military Bought Mass Monitoring Tool That Includes Internet Browsing, Email Data

The “Augury” platform includes highly sensitive network data that Team Cymru, a private company, is selling to the military. “It’s everything. There’s nothing else to capture except the smell of electricity,” one cybersecurity expert said.

Multiple branches of the U.S. military have bought access to a powerful internet monitoring tool that

claims to cover over 90 percent of the world’s internet traffic,

and which in some cases provides access to people’s email data, browsing history, and other information such as their sensitive internet cookies

the U.S. Navy, Army, Cyber Command, and the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency have collectively paid at least $3.5 million to access Augury.

This allows the military to track internet usage using an incredible amount of sensitive information.

PCAP data is “everything,” Zach Edwards, a cybersecurity researcher who has closely followed the data trade, told Motherboard in an online chat.

“It’s everything. There’s nothing else to capture except the smell of electricity.”

Fort Worth hired Aaron Dean after psychologist found he wasn’t suitable for police work

A psychologist who evaluated Aaron Dean before he was hired as a Fort Worth police officer testified Friday the former cop now convicted of manslaughter wasn’t fit for police work.

Psychologist Kyle Clayton testified (https://linkst.dallasnews.com/click/30008952.38549/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGFsbGFzbmV3cy5jb20vbmV3cy9jcmltZS 8yMDIyLzEyLzE2L2ZvcnQtd29ydGgtaGlyZWQtYWFyb24tZGVh bi1hZnRlci1wc3ljaG9sb2dpc3QtZm91bmQtaGUtd2FzbnQtc3 VpdGFibGUtZm9yLXBvbGljZS13b3JrLz9zYWlsdGhydV9pZD02 MjY4MDgwY2Q0NWY5ZDAzZjQ1Y2I2ZWE/6268080cd45f9d03f45cb6eaDe4bd2c90)

Dean exhibited grandiose, “domineering, overcontrolling” personality traits.

Clayton concluded Dean, 38, was “not psychologically suitable to serve as a police officer”

Moar punishment doesn't necessarily make us safer.

In Austin, Texas, a 911 call from a person reporting a mental health emergency used to get directed to the police. Now, if there is no immediate danger, dispatchers have the option to transfer the call to a mental health clinician. In the first eight months after the program’s 2019 start, 82 percent of calls that were transferred were handled without police involvement, which resulted in savings to the taxpayer of $1,642,213. By the 2021 fiscal year, the program was involved in almost 2,000 calls. In Brooklyn, young people who completed an alternative program for illegal gun possession had a 22 percent lower rearrest rate than peers who went to prison. In Olympia, Wash., a new unit of the police department that, according to the Council of State Governments Justice Center, provides “free, confidential and voluntary crisis response assistance” has responded to 3,108 calls since 2019, all while minimizing arrests and with no injuries to responders.

Communities that have adopted these approaches have not done away with enforcement; they have just required less of it. In Denver, a five-year randomized control trial of a program that provides housing subsidies to those at risk of being unhoused found a 40 percent reduction in arrests among participants. These kinds of results are why localities from New Jersey to New Mexico are restructuring their local governments to invest in the social determinants of health and safety.

And yet, as I have learned over more than two decades of work in this field, the black hole narrative cannot be changed by statistics alone. If you want policies that actually work, you have to change the political conversation from “tough candidates punishing bad people” to “strong communities keeping everyone safe.” Candidates who care about solving a problem pay attention to what caused it. Imagine a plumber who tells you to get more absorbent flooring but does not look for the leak.https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/12/opinion/crime-policies-cities.html

‘Killed by LAPD’:

Co-founder of Black Lives Matter says cousin Tased to death by police

A Black father and high school teacher died of cardiac arrest last week after

he was repeatedly Tased by a Los Angeles police officer following a car accident.

The Guardian reports that police arrived on the scene of a car accident at around 3:30 PM.

LAPD body camera footage shows Anderson asking for help.

An officer told him to sit on the sidewalk and then to “get up against the wall.”

Anderson obeyed the officer’s demands, but then attempted to flee the scene.

One of the officers chased him on a motorcycle.

The officer yelled at Anderson to “get down to the ground.”

Anderson repeatedly begged, “Please help me,” and, “They’re trying to kill me,” as multiple officers held him down.

One officer put his elbow and full body on Anderson’s neck while he was on his back.

During the tasing, Anderson repeatedly said, “Help me,” as the officer told him to stop resisting.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and took Anderson to a local hospital, where

he went into cardiac arrest and died four hours later.

a police spokesperson, announced during the news conference that the department’s toxicology report found cocaine metabolite and cannabinoids in Anderson’s bloodstream. :lol of course!

Anderson’s was the third death in Los Angeles at the hands of police in 2023.

Cop City is the Future They Want

On January 18th, the Atlanta police assassinated one of those defenders.

Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, affectionately known as “Tortuguita,” or “Little Turtle” was

gunned down in cold blood by a stormtrooper raiding a peaceful encampment.

The defenders have been in the Weelaunee Forest (also known as the South River Forest), south-east of Atlanta, for nearly two years protesting the construction of

a massive $90 million dollar, 85-acre, police training facility.

According to Truthout,

the project has the backing of major corporations like Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Delta Airlines, UPS and Cox Enterprises.

The latter owns the

Atlanta Constitution-Journal which has published endless articles in praise of the Cop City project and demonizing anyone who dissents or protests it.

The citizens of Atlanta, where a majority has opposed the facility, will nonetheless be paying for a third of its cost.

It is also located in a predominantly working-class Black neighbourhood.

The authoritarian state, now in the most dangerous and destructive phase of late capitalism, is ramping up its efforts to suppress any meaningful dissent.

With each passing year it becomes more brazen.

The state is already unleashing its arsenal and

declaring protestors “domestic terrorists,”

a term which has been made meaningless with each passing year as it

is applied to virtually anyone who exposes or opposes state violence,

mindless militarism,

rapacious consumption and corporate ecocide.

An investigation was completed on this, then they were fired. This isn't a race issue even if many will make it so. This is about police brutality. Had the victim not died we probably don't even hear about it, but this likely happens daily in cities across the US.

Limiting the number of times cops have to pull over drivers for inessential reasons actually protects cops by reducing the number of potentially violent interactions and accidents. Police departments should be lobbying for this, not bitching about it.

"an armed force for protection and participation"

Nile was among nearly 200 people who have been cleared of charges tied to former Sgt. Ronald Watts and his Chicago Police Department team. It's the largest series of exonerations in the city’s history, said Joshua Tepfer, a lawyer with the University of Chicago Law School’s Exoneration Project, which has represented most of the victims.

For almost a decade, Watts and his team preyed on innocent people at the Ida B. Wells Homes public housing project, where they extorted money and planted drugs and guns, knowing their victims – largely Black and low-income residents – wouldn't be believed, said Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx.

culture of lawlessness and thuggish brutality

Rankin County sheriff’s deputies “tortured” and subjected two Black men to “waterboarding techniques,” before shooting one of them in the mouth while he was in handcuffs, attorneys for the men alleged in a notice of claims they delivered to authorities Wednesday.

The document alleged that “six white sheriff’s deputies” raided a private residence where Michael Jenkins, 32, and Eddie Terrell Parker, 35, stayed at 135 Conerly Road in Braxton, Miss., “without warning or warrant” in what the Rankin County sheriff later called a narcotics investigation.

The FBI and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident. The Rankin County Sheriff’s office did not reply to the Mississippi Free Press’ request for comments following calls on Tuesday and Wednesday. WLBT published a report Wednesday night, which included a statement from the sheriff. (https://www.wlbt.com/2023/02/16/fbi-jackson-rankin-co-sheriff-release-statements-following-incident-with-rankin-co-officers/)

“Multiple suspects were taken into custody, and we contacted the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations to investigate the actions of our deputies,” Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said in the statement. “We are fully cooperating with that ongoing investigation and will continue to do so.

This sounds like a throwback to your Ron Paul libertarian days. It's an interesting thought but how would it work? Would we get rid of all traffic laws or leave them on the books but not enforce them?something like this, I would imagine. traffic enforcement needn't be a police function. automated electronic traffic enforcement might also have a role to play.

Build non-police first responder teams whose mission is traffic and road safety, not criminal law enforcement. Remove the authority of police to stop cars for minortraffic violations and end discretionary, non–public safety stops. Cities can replacepolice with unarmed, civilian traffic response units, housed in a city department oftransportation or public works and staffed by experts in transportation and mediation.7Their role would be to respond to traffic collisions and minor violations. Although theywould have the authority to stop cars, they would not be able to use force, and their mission would be traffic safety rather than criminal law enforcement. The City of Berkeley,California, announced in July 2020 that it would create the Berkeley Department ofTransportation (BerkDOT), which will task unarmed civil servants, rather than police, withhandling traffic enforcement and issuing citations.https://www.vera.org/downloads/publications/alternatives-to-policing-traffic-enforcement-fact-sheet.pdf

Crime pays, not least in LASD.

Los Angeles County Undersheriff April Tardy, the Sheriff’s Department’s second-highest-ranking official, said she has a tattoo on her ankle that signifies her dedication to a station she was assigned to early in her career. But several current department sources say the tattoo signifies membership in the V Boys, a deputy gang.

The V Boys allegedly existed at the Sheriff’s Temple Station in the San Gabriel Valley, where Tardy worked in the 1990s.

https://capitalandmain.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Bio_Undersheriff-April-L-Tardy_300.jpgL.A. County Undersheriff April Tardy. Photo: LASD.

Deputy gangs have long been a problem in the Sheriff’s Department. A special counsel report to the Los Angeles County Civilian Oversight Commission released last week said deputy gangs have been present since at least 1973.

“It is indisputable that for nearly 50 years, Deputy Gangs and Deputy Cliques have existed within the Department and their existence and negative impacts were known to the leadership of the Department. Yet there was no sustained effort during this period to eradicate Deputy Gangs and Deputy Cliques from the Department,” the report (https://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/bos/commissionpublications/report/1138014_DeputyGangsSpecialCounselReporttoCOC3.2.20 23.PDF.PDF) stated.

The special counsel report found that deputy cliques “run the stations or units where they exist, as opposed to the sergeants, lieutenants and the captain.”

Bodycam video shows 5 Utah police officers fatally shooting man who initially refused to show ID at traffic stop

Police in Utah killed a 25-year-old during a traffic stop this month after he refused to obey commands and an officer said he had a gun, body camera video released Wednesday reveals.

Video presented to reporters by Farmington Police Chief Eric Johnsen — who called the incident "a tragic ending to what started out as an everyday traffic stop" — shows five officers' fatal shooting of Chase Allan on March 1 after an officer pulled Allan over for what authorities said was an illegitimate license plate.

Mistrial declared in capital murder case after Dallas police failed to turn over evidence

A judge declared a mistrial in a capital murder case Tuesday (https://linkst.dallasnews.com/click/30999080.75395/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGFsbGFzbmV3cy5jb20vbmV3cy9jb3VydH MvMjAyMy8wMy8yOS9taXN0cmlhbC1kZWNsYXJlZC1pbi1jYXBp dGFsLW11cmRlci1jYXNlLWFmdGVyLWRhbGxhcy1wb2xpY2UtZm FpbGVkLXRvLXR1cm4tb3Zlci1ldmlkZW5jZS8_c2FpbHRocnVf aWQ9NjI2ODA4MGNkNDVmOWQwM2Y0NWNiNmVh/6268080cd45f9d03f45cb6eaD1abd24b4) after lawyers discovered a Dallas police detective failed to turn over more than 200 videos of evidence prior to trial.

Lacorius Hawkins was on trial for the 2021 shooting death of Christion Washington in his West Dallas apartment.

Camera surveillance footage from the apartment complex was among the 212 videos the lead detective didn’t share with lawyers, defense attorney Erin Kelley said.

The consequences for (perjury and slanderous pig) Tran and OPD aren’t clear. The department told The Oaklandside that Tran is currently assigned to the criminal investigation division and is not on administrative leave. Asked whether OPD is aware of the allegations that Tran might have made a false statement in court and that he paid a confidential informant who helped convict two men, OPD declined to comment.

Yup, New Mexico or Old Mexico, good guys/gals with guns in their own home can't trust cops anywhere. 2A forever!

Headline: New Robert Dotson, 52, was killed Wednesday night by officers with the Farmington Police Department after they received a call reporting a domestic violence incident around 11:30 p.m. and went to his house instead of the one across the street, according to local and state police.

“I am just heartbroken. … Mr. Dotson was not the subject of this call,” Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said during a Thursday video statement posted on Facebook. “This ending is just unbelievably tragic. I’m extremely sorry that we’re in this position.”

Upon arriving to the neighborhood in Farmington, which is about 150 miles northwest of Albuquerque, officers “mistakenly approached 5305 Valley View Avenue instead of 5308 Valley View Avenue,” New Mexico State Police said in a statement Thursday.

After no one answered their knocks on the door, police officers asked the dispatch to call the person who reported the incident and ask them to come to the front door.

At some point, Dotson opened the door of his home while armed with a handgun and at least one officer shot at least one round from their gun, striking and killing Dotson at the scene, according to state police citing body camera footage.

Armed with a handgun, Dotson’s wife exchanged gunfire with officers, but she was not injured, authorities said.

“Once again, officer(s) fired. Once she realized that the individuals outside the residence were officers, she put the gun down and complied with the officer’s commands,” state police said in their statement.

After that night in 2019, David Nave rarely left his Dorchester apartment.

His thoughts spun around and around the events of March 30:

the footsteps pounding up the street behind him;

the uniformed police officer grabbing him hard by the hood of his sweatshirt and slamming him to the ground;

the feeling of his bones grinding against the pavement.

He spent almost all his waking hours hunched over a computer, surrounded by growing stacks of paper, feverishly researching the Boston police captain.

Headlines flashed before Nave’s eyes. “The avatar of cop violence in Boston (https://bostonglobe.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90f9e490a860897c7155feca1&id=2ca55a2f1d&e=3ae3948659),” read one.

“Police captain has long been a concern,” read another.
Internal investigators eventually ruled that

Captain John Danilecki had violated the department’s use of force guidelines and lied.

Yet, he's continued on the job for years without any discipline,

going on to rack up more complaints and

take home over a million in pay from the city.

The BPD's conspicuous failure to discipline Danilecki is no rarity.

Rather, it is emblematic of the way that complaints against officers are often handled,

despite repeated vows from multiple police commissioners to do better,

WTF??? Police chase and tasing for driving 3 mph over posted speed?

An 80-year-old man filed a lawsuit this week against an eastern Kansas sheriff’s office for allegedly tasing him without warning after officers pursued him for driving 3 mph over the speed limit.

In his federal lawsuit, John Sigg said a lieutenant with the Iola Police Department in Allen County on April 16, 2021, clocked him driving 38 mph in an area where the speed limit was 35 and decided to give “chase.”

Multiple police vehicles followed Sigg for a few minutes as he drove to his family’s car lot, although he did not realize he was “the subject of the pursuit,” his attorney wrote. He parked, got out and was surrounded by officers from several agencies.

Two Chanute police officers pulled their guns on Sigg, according to the lawsuit. Looking “quizzically” at them, he raised his hands, which can be seen in a screenshot of body-camera footage of the incident.

“ Get on the f—ing ground,” a now-former deputy with the Allen County Sheriff’s Office yelled, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District of Kansas.

Without warning, the deputy used a Taser on Sigg — even though the manufacturer of the TASER X2 warns about using it “on the elderly,” his lawyer wrote. Sigg dropped “like a rock,” his attorney said, and cut his head.

“Sigg mumbled and was hard to understand,” his Wichita attorney, Randall Rathbun, wrote in the lawsuit. “As officers talked with him on the scene he indicated that he did not know what was going on and did not feel right.”

whiteys murdering an innocent man.

OKLAHOMA COURT:

WE WANT RICHARD GLOSSIP DEAD

AND

EVIDENCE BE DAMNED

In a stunning rebuke to the state’s attorney general,

the appeals court refused to vacate Glossip’s conviction,

clearing the way for his execution.

The court’s move is a rebuke not only to the attorney general, who ordered a review (https://www.oag.ok.gov/sites/g/files/gmc766/f/documents/2023/glossip_report_4.3.2023_redacted.pdf) of Glossip’s case earlier this year,

but also to dozens of conservative Oklahoma legislators

who have been fighting to stop Glossip’s execution over fears the state would kill an innocent man.

“The state has reached the difficult conclusion that the conviction of Glossip was obtained with the benefit of material misstatements to the jury by its key witness,”

Much of this evidence supports Glossip’s contention that

Sneed — a chronic drug user who demonstrated unpredictable bouts of violence — carried out the crime and only later set up Glossip as the mastermind.

the attorney general himself agreed that the state’s star witness had been discredited.

minors may have been filmed by WV State Police

Abuse, harassment, sexual misconduct are among the latest allegations against the West Virginia State Police. (https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/west-virginia-state-police-investigation/i-would-do-it-again-whistleblower-shares-why-he-wrote-anonymous-letter-alleging-wrongdoing-in-west-virginia-state-police/)

Wheeling-based attorney Teresa Toriseva says she has now sent another 30-day Notice of Forthcoming Legal Action (https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/west-virginia-state-police-investigation/group-who-used-womens-locker-room-at-wvsp-academy-potentially-suing-the-west-virginia-state-police/) to the state police on behalf of a group of women. Toriseva said there have been new developments in her investigation that go beyond hidden cameras.

“It is an environment at the state police academy that’s downright hostile to women,” Toriseva said.

A group of women have already come forward (https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/west-virginia-state-police-investigation/group-who-used-womens-locker-room-at-wvsp-academy-potentially-suing-the-west-virginia-state-police/) wanting to know if they were filmed while using the locker room at the West Virginia State Police Academy. Toriseva filed an intent of notice to sue on their behalf in late March. In early April, she filed a second notice after it became known that minors may have been filmed (https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/attorney-minors-may-have-been-caught-on-hidden-camera-in-west-virginia-state-police-academy-locker-room/) on the hidden camera in the locker room.

Last week, Winfield Attorney David Moye told WOWK 13 News he sent a notice of intent to bring a lawsuit (https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/another-lawsuit-pending-against-west-virginia-state-police-over-hidden-camera/) to West Virginia Attorney Patrick Morrisey and WVSP Superintendent Colonel Jack Chambers on behalf of five additional female plaintiffs.

Now Toriseva said many of those women have additional allegations that are much worse. She says this new notice of legal action from her office represents 42 women including 10 minors who attended the Junior Trooper Academy and alleges a civil conspiracy.

Julia Dupuis, an activist named Charley who asked that their last name be withheld for security concerns, and an activist named Wednesday were arrested at a gas station outside the town of Cartersville on Friday. According to their lawyer, Lyra Foster, the activists drove once through the neighborhood and placed flyers on numerous mailboxes without exiting their vehicle or approaching any residents. Foster said Wednesday was a passenger in the car and not posting flyers.

If found guilty, they could each face up to 20 years in prison.

“They were not handing out flyers, they were actually extremely careful in trying to avoid doing anything illegal,” Foster told The Intercept. “They posted the flyers on mailboxes, they did not even get out of the van to put flyers on the doors, and did not open the mailboxes because they thought that was potentially illegal.”

An 11-year-old Mississippi boy who was shot by a police officer after he called 911 for help is recovering after being released from the hospital, according to his family.

The family is calling for the officer to be fired and charged with the shooting.

Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest by an Indianola Police Department officer early Saturday morning while the officer was responding to a domestic disturbance call at the child’s home, according to his mother, Nakala Murry, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

Murry told CNN that the father of another of her children arrived at her home at 4 a.m., “irate.”

Concerned about her safety, Murry asked Aderrien to call the police.

Murry said the officer who arrived at the home “had his gun drawn at the front door and asked those inside the home to come outside.” Murry said her son was shot coming around the corner of a hallway, into the living room.

“Once he came from around the corner, he got shot,” Murry said. “I cannot grasp why. The same cop that told him to come out of the house. (Aderrien) did, and he got shot. He kept asking, ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?’” she said.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. Friday at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of Old Pearsall Road.

All five Mississippi deputy sheriffs who responded to an incident where two Black men accused the deputies of beating and sexually assaulting them before shooting one of them in the mouth have been fired or resigned, authorities announced Tuesday.”

The announcement comes months after Michael Corey Jenkins and his friend Eddie Terrell Parker said deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department burst into a home without a warrant. The men said deputies beat them, assaulted them with a sex toy (https://apnews.com/article/mississippi-sheriffs-office-civil-rights-investigation-fb83f565d2f3e58da4b978077f5b7d67) and shocked them repeatedly with Tasers in a roughly 90-minute period during the Jan. 24 episode, Jenkins and Parker said.

Jenkins said one of the deputies shoved a gun in his mouth and then fired the weapon, leaving him with serious injuries to his face, tongue and jaw. PDs aren't well-geared to their public safety mission, they're more about social control and repression. Pretextual stops dwarf time spent responding to/solving crimes.

Overall, sheriff patrol officers spend significantly more time on officer-initiated stops – “proactive policing” in law enforcement parlance – than they do responding to community members’ calls for help, according to the report. Research has shown that the practice is a fundamentally ineffective public safety strategy, the report pointed out.

In 2019, 88% of the time L.A. County sheriff’s officers spent on stops was for officer-initiated stops rather than in response to calls. The overwhelming majority of that time – 79% – was spent on traffic violations. By contrast, just 11% of those hours was spent on stops based on reasonable suspicion of a crime.

In Riverside, about 83% of deputies’ time spent on officer-initiated stops went toward traffic violations, and just 7% on stops based on reasonable suspicion.

Moreover, most of the stops are pointless, other than inconveniencing citizens, or worse – “a routine practice of pretextual stops,” researchers wrote. Roughly three out of every four hours that Sacramento sheriff’s officers spent investigating traffic violations were for stops that ended in warnings, or no action, for example.

Researchers calculated that more of the departments’ budgets go toward fruitless traffic stops than responses to service calls -- essentially wasting millions of public dollars.

Chauncee Smith, a senior manager at Catalyst California, told me they wanted to test the dominant media and political narrative that police agencies use public funds to keep communities safe.

“We found there is a significant inconsistency between their practices” and what the public might think police do, Smith said. “It begs the question of why we keep doubling down on public safety strategies that have been proven time and time again to fail.”

Pretextual stops dwarf time spent responding to/solving crimes.

& the predisposed said cop from ending up tagged & bagged. Like "Chef" meets that tiger fartin' around in the jungle in -Apocalypse Now- "Don't get out of the fuckin' boat, ever."
Same with the cops, "Don't get out of the fuckin' cruiser, ever. Get your 20 and that fuckin' pension, then move to fuckin' Florida with your fuckin' 3rd wife."

"He was Black, I'm White, he looked like he had a gun. He didn't. I shit myself. I went back to the cruiser, back to the precinct, clocked out remotely with my cell and came home. Now, make me turkey pot pie!"

A little too out of control; six of them pleaded guilty.

Six white former law enforcement officers in Mississippi who called themselves the “Goon Squad” pleaded guilty Thursday to a racist assault on two Black men in a home raid that ended with an officer shooting one man in the mouth.

The officers entered the house without a warrant on Jan. 24, assaulting the men with a sex toy and using stun guns and other objects to abuse them over a roughly 90-minute period, court documents show. After one victim was shot and wounded in a “mock execution” that went awry, the documents say the officers conspired to plant and tamper with evidence instead of providing medical aid.https://apnews.com/article/rankin-mississippi-deputies-civil-rights-brutality-2c2154e67cc6cd3b9a28cb16686f2a5c

seizing the newsroom seems a drastic remedy for a mere allegation

Police in a central Kansas town raided the local newspaper's office Friday and seized computers and employees' personal cellphones – an action that advocates say violates federal laws protecting the media.

Law enforcement officers with the Marion (Kan.) Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Office on Friday took the Marion County Record's computer file server, other computers and phones, along with other equipment, the Record reported (http://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/FQL9CpYoJQhxLV632UD1ikI?domain=marionrecord.com).

A search warrant, posted online by non-profit news site the Kansas Reflector (https://kansasreflector.com/2023/08/11/police-stage-chilling-raid-on-marion-county-newspaper-seizing-computers-records-and-cellphones/), was signed by Marion County District Court Magistrate Judge Laura Viar. The search warrant was approved by the judge citing probable cause that violations related to identity theft and unlawful acts concerning computers were committed. Police were approved to search for devices that were used to access the Kansas Department of Revenue records website and documents and records pertaining to Kari Newell.

Newell is a Marion restaurant owner who during a city council meeting on Aug. 7 accused the Record of illegally obtaining information about her, the newspaper reported (http://marionrecord.com/direct/restaurateur_accuses_paper_councilwoman+5447newell +5265737461757261746575722061636375736573207061706 5722c20636f756e63696c776f6d616e3c212d2d2d2d3e?).ht tps://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/08/12/marion-kansas-newspaper-raid/70581793007/

Not releasing people you have no good cause to detain further is classic official oppression -- same thing has been happening in Kinney County. People left in the stir for months at a time.

A jury of 9 women and 3 men has found suspended Clay County Sheriff Jeff Lyde guilty of crimes committed when he was sheriff in 2021.

The jury began deliberating in the Montague County Courthouse around 10:30 Friday morning after hearing closing arguments from Special Prosecutor Staley Heatly and Lyde’s defense attorney Bob Estrada.

They returned the verdicts about an hour later.

Lyde is charged with official oppression and tampering with records, related to two Henrietta residents who were allegedly held in jail longer than allowed without due process.

Man Firing AR-15 Into Air Celebrating Constitutional Carry Law Shot By Police, Charged After Hospital Release

A Florida man is finally facing multiple weapons charges, months after he allegedly fired a gun into the air celebrating the state's new gun law - and was then shot by police.

Florida’s new Constitutional Carry law went into effect a week before Christian Labaut, 37, was initially arrested in July. Under the new legislation, Floridians no longer need a permit to carry concealed firearms.

Police received reports on July 7 of a white man wearing body armor and firing an AR-15 into the air outside of Labaut's Miami apartment building.

You can't make this batshit crazy stuff up but then again, it is for the poorly educated. :lol

Yam Tits Jr. is telling everyone that cops cannot protect you so get a gun to save yourself "if people in motorized paragliders come into your home."

Jr. said: "You can never depend on the government to save you in a time of need. when seconds count. Cops are just minutes away. You need to be armed. You can only trust yourself and keep your family safe... That's why you need an AR 15. That's why you need a 30-round mag because if people in motorized paragliders come into your home, that's what it's for."

Am surprised he did not advocate for people building moats around their homes and stocking the moats with jew sharks with lasers on their head to protect homeowners.

An independent pathologist examining the newly exhumed body of Dexter Wade — the Mississippi man killed by police and buried (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bettersten-wade-dexter-jackson-mississippi-police-missing-rcna121697)in a pauper's grave (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bettersten-wade-dexter-jackson-mississippi-police-missing-rcna121697)without his mother’s knowledge (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bettersten-wade-dexter-jackson-mississippi-police-missing-rcna121697) — found a wallet with a state identification card that included the address of a home he shared with his mother, the family's lawyer said Thursday.

The pathologist, Frank Peretti, reported that he found the wallet in the front pocket of Wade's jeans and that it contained his state identification card with his home address, along with a credit card and a health insurance card, attorney Ben Crump said in a statement.

Crump, who arranged for the independent autopsy, said he was sharing Peretti's initial findings. NBC News has not seen the full autopsy report.

A representative of Crump's confirmed that the home address was the same as his mother's, Bettersten Wade. She reported her 37-year-old son missing on March 14, nine days after he was struck by a police cruiser as he was crossing a highway.

She got no information from police about what happened to him until Aug. 27, when she learned that he'd been killed less than an hour after he had left his house and buried in a pauper's field owned by Hinds County.

A Hinds County coroner’s office investigator reported that he did not find identification on Dexter Wade’s body but found his name on a bottle of prescription pills and used that information to confirm who he was within a few days. The investigator said he called a number listed for Bettersten Wade but did not hear back. Bettersten Wade said she has no recollection or record of such a call.

The coroner’s office investigator reported that he also shared Dexter Wade’s information with police. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said last month that Wade was “without identification” and police were not able to identify him.

Apparently the city of LA and LA County were afraid to take on the LASDs.

Christopher Hernandez is the second former sheriff’s deputy sentenced to prison in connection with the case of Jesus Alegria, who accused the two deputies of kidnapping and abusing him after he yelled at them to stop picking on teens in a Compton park. The deputies forced Alegria into the back of their cruiser minutes before crashing the vehicle while chasing another man, prosecutors said, then fabricated a drug arrest to cover it all up.

In December, Hernandez’s former partner — ex-deputy Miguel Vega — was sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law. As a result of their criminal convictions, last month the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training deemed both deputies ineligible to work as police officers or deputies in Californiahttps://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-01-23/former-la-deputy-sentenced-to-federal-prison-for-abducting-compton-skateboarder

Sure, we get to hear plenty about officers’ “training and expertise,” but the tool set seems extremely limited (https://www.techdirt.com/2022/11/16/immunity-denied-to-deputies-who-tried-to-turn-muscular-dystrophy-into-reasonable-suspicion/) when it comes to dealing with unforeseen circumstances (https://www.techdirt.com/2021/05/03/fifth-circuit-strips-immunity-cops-who-ended-mental-health-crisis-restraining-man-to-death/).

Whatever can’t be handled with a gun can probably be handled with a Taser and a bit of a beating. Already a problematic workflow, but it gets even worse when cops are asked to be first responders for calls better handled by EMTs or mental health care specialists.

Because we ask cops to do jobs they’re not trained to do, we end up with the sort of thing far too often. But these cops are far from blameless. They didn’t have to respond the way they did to a medical emergency. And they sure as shit didn’t need to follow up their initial mistake with something far, far more nefarious.

It starts out badly enough (https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/marin-seizure-police-taser-19375569.php). It gets a lot more horrible from there.

In the early hours of Aug. 29, 2022, San Anselmo resident Alice Frankel awoke to strange noises coming from the man who was then her fiance and is now her husband. When she turned on a light, she said, Bruce Frankel’s arms were stiffly extended, his legs were shaking, his eyes were rolled back and his mouth foamed.

She called 911, worried he was dying. A neurologist would later diagnose Bruce Frankel with epilepsy and say he had suffered a grand mal seizure.

People think calling 911 will get them the best help the fastest. That’s not always the case. Sometimes, you just get the first people who show up, and who aren’t the best fit for the situation.

That was the case here. The first person on the scene was Officer Kevin Sinnott of the Central Marin Police Authority (CMPA). Dispatchers had told Officer Sinnott that 62-year-old Bruce Frankel was in “an altered state.” Frankel, who had already stumbled in the bathroom and cut his back open, continued to struggle through his seizure. Officer Sinnott tried to restrain Frankel. Frankel “resisted,” so to speak. He did not comply because it was impossible for him to comply.

All of this was captured on the officer’s body camera.

The struggle went on for several minutes before the officer shocked Bruce Frankel twice with a Taser, the video shows. After more officers and EMTs arrived, and Bruce Frankel was finally handcuffed and taken away in an ambulance, he was bloodied and had injuries to both arms and a cut across his nose, his lawsuit states.

Now, at this point, everything is just extremely unfortunate. An officer who didn’t recognize what he was dealing with and was untrained to handle someone suffering through a tonic-clonic seizure responded like any cop would: he deployed force until he had control of the situation. In this case, securing control likely occurred as soon as the seizure ended.

And it would have just remained an unfortunate occurrence, albeit one that might indicate calls requiring medical attention be handled by actual medical professionals, rather than some guy with a Taser and the ability to yell “stop resisting” over and over again until the words lose their meaning.

It’s what happened after this that shocks the conscience, which has not only the expected definition but a legal definition when it comes to civil rights lawsuits.

At 3:26 a.m., Sinnott spoke to a fellow officer, Sean Fahy, about whether a crime occurred. After Fahy said, “There’s nothing criminal here,” Sinnott said, “I don’t think he’s competent to commit a crime.”

But two minutes later, Sinnott spoke to officer Joel Heaps, a CMPA corporal who later identified himself as a supervising officer on the case. Heaps asked if Bruce Frankel committed “243(b),” a battery on a police officer. Sinnott said no. Seconds later, Heaps asked, “Was there any 240?” referring to an attempted assault, and Sinnott said yes.

Three minutes later, Heaps said, “I understand this is a medical, but at the point that he starts fighting our uniformed officers, there’s a 240 or 243(b).” Sinnott then said, “I felt like I got battered.”

This could have been handled with an apology and an honest effort to make sure Frankel received the proper medical attention. Instead, an officer who screwed up his response decided to turn Frankel into a criminal with the assistance of his supervisor. Officer Sinnott capped it all off by filing a report stating that he had detained Frankel for being the perpetrator of a “possible domestic battery” and was “under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

None of this was true but it was enough to get Frankel handcuffed to a hospital bed after Officer Sinnott repeated his lies to hospital staff, claiming there had been a “pretty big scuffle” and that Frankel was under arrest for a bunch of imagined crimes.

Five hours later — and after Officer Heaps insinuated Frankel had attacked Officer Sinnott — Frankel was discharged from the hospital and taken to jail. They processed Frankel for the (made up) charges and cut him loose. Basically, the cops just abandoned Frankel, who was still wearing his hospital garb.

In his paper hospital clothing, Bruce Frankel walked several blocks — with no money or cellphone — to Northgate Gas, where an attendant helped him call a taxi home, he said. In the taxi home, he said, “All I could think about was how and what I was going to tell my friends and colleagues.”

At this point, Frankel still believed he had assaulted an officer while suffering through his seizure. It wasn’t until the Marin County DA’s office called Frankel’s wife to offer its support for her as a “victim of domestic violence” that the Frankels became aware of the extent of the charges manufactured against Bruce. Once the DA’s office had a chance to view the recordings of the arrest, it withdrew the charges with prejudice. It helps but it’s too late. Now, the county has a lawsuit (https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/24536038/frankelcmpa.pdf) [PDF] to deal with.

making up crimes to cover mistakes

The worst, that'll keep one up nights, Winester,,,all the shit we don't know that's been goin' on. There is a book published about 20 years ago, a coffee table book...I believe entitled -The Innocence Project- filled with pictures of men and women in-mates who'd been wrong accused and imprisoned, now set free. Now these pictures ain't whole page pictures. No. On the contrary. They're thumb nail sized pictures and the book is huge.

Just like 2020, violent cops are using brutal force to punish a political viewpoint under color of protecting the tranquil enjoyment of property and safety from the agitation of noisy, irritating protesters.

Over 1/2 of the arrests at Columbia and CCNY were people who had nothing to do with the school.

If agitators can be properly vetted and ID'd I'm all for some skull cracking on those phucks.

One outrageous, persistent demand --120 colleges and universities so far, I think -- in all these student protests is the callow expectation of sit down negotiations with university officialdom.

The students' request to talk it out has been taken down in brutal police actions across the country, tbh.
