OK, i did the math, so here are today's scenarios: Georgia nad Poland are out, the key game is Croatia against Czech Republic

If Croatia wins, the rest of the games don't matter. Croatia, Spain and Slovenia all go through with 2 points.

If CR wins things get complicated:
If both Spain and Slovenia win Slovenia (4), Spain (2) and CR (0) are through
If only Spain loses (unlikely), there is a circle of three teams Croatia lost to spain by 28 pts, CR to Spain by 21 pts. This means again Slovenia (4), Spain (2) and CR (0) are through
If only Slovenia loses, there is again a circle of three teams: Slovenia is at 0, Croatia at +2 and CR at -2. CR is through, if they beat Croatia for more than 2 pts, we're also through, if for 1 Croatia, Spain and Slovenia all go through with 2 points, i don't know what the next tie-breaker is if they win by 2, but i think we look ok (we didnt get blown out by any team like Croatia and CR did against Spain)
If both Slovenia and Spain lose, there is a circle of 4 (!) teams with 3 wins again Slovenia (4), Spain (2) and CR (0) are through.

So, Croatia vs. the Czechs is what we should pay most attention to. There is a small chance CR win knocks us out (i'm not sure even then), but it's far superior result for second round.

Go Vesely, go Welsch!

It turns out Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIBA_EuroBasket_2013) has me covered:

Slovenia can only be eliminated if they lose to Poland by more than 35 points AND Czech Republic beat Croatia by exactly 2 points.

So the next tie-breaker is overall point differential.

To sum it up:
A win by Croatia: Croatia, Spain and Slovenia all go through with 2 points.
A win by CR by exactly 1 point and a win by Spain and a loss by Slovenia: Croatia, Spain and Slovenia all go through with 2 points.
A win by CR by exactly 2 points and a win by Spain and a loss by Slovenia for more than 35 points to Poland: Spain (4) and CR (2) and Croatia (0).
Any other scenario: Slovenia (4) and Spain (2) and CR (0).

I think our all time worst defeat is something like 25 points, so yeah i don't see us lose by that much, least of all against Poland of all teams. I think we're safe for second round.

Boris is playing with an adequate aggressivity. Yesterday, he was surprisingly taking shots after shots in the 3rd quarter, no matter if they're tough or not. However, I think he was a bit more aggresive during the prep games. Right now, Tony is carrying much more the load than in the firsts games of prep. So Boris is more hidden but still solid.

Tony was great yesterday, literally took the game in his hands and led France to win.

France really lacks a really good C, Ajinca is solid, but that's not it, and Lauvergne was really bad yesterday, missed a couple of easy shots. If they had Noah they would be my no1 favourites to win the championship, but without him I'd give Spain a better chance. But we will see, anything is possible and I also think that France hasn't showed their real game at this tournament yet.

To be honest France is playing a bunch of crappy teams in the first round, so it's hard to say anything solid about France at this point...

He is still fine in that area but he has faded in the past couple of weeks. He just hasn't been good in the last few friendly games (against Spain and Slovenia) and to start the Eurobasket. He has missed shots he made earlier this summer, he is looking slow and his rebounding is poor.

Group E:
Serbia, France: 2/0
Ukraine, Lithuania: 1/1
Latvia, Belgium: 0/2

It theorically should have featured
Spain, best Eurpean team,
Russia, second best in the Olimpics,
Turkey, best in the last world cup,
Greece (with Euroleague MVP player)
home team team Slovenia
wild card.

Italy and Finland got inadvertedly in.

In the other group
France will face powerhouse Latvia,
a young and depleted Serbian team and Lithuania.

France was lucky, to say the least.

De Colo didn't deserve to make the team over Fournier who had a better season in the first place...

Btw Gelabale is arguably the best reliable player after TP, pretty sure he already signed somewhere but if the Spurs could get rid of De Colo and sign Gelable it'd be a good move...

It's debatable that Fournier has had a better rookie season than De Colo. Personally, I would go with De Colo having the better rookie season.

And Fournier wasn't fighting with De Colo for a roster spot. De Colo is a key piece of the NT and was a lock to make the 12 players roster. Forunier was fighting with Charles Kahudi for a roster spot.

Gelabale will play in Russia next season.

I'm not sure that Mahinmi is much better than our centers. Ajinça is doing a nice job right now. Lauvergne makes also a lot of good things and is one of the players we could see every year in FNT. Petro is not very good since the beginning of the tournament but I don't know if Mahinmi would have made a bigger impact than him.

Bruno
09-10-2013, 10:41 AM
French Beno Udrih? :lol At least he probably didn't cancel the participation via SMS.

I would give the Beno Udrih award to Joakim Noah but the story around Mahinmi is quite ridiculous. Mahinmi's ego is hurt because he wasn't picked in 2011 and because last spring the coach didn't make the effort of traveling to Indiana to talk with him while he traveled to the USA to see other players. Mahinmi having a wife and a daughter surely doesn't entice him to go play with the NT.

And while France missed some players like Mahinmi, Noah, Turiaf, Ali Traoré or Séraphin, the only true loss is Noah.

smaka
09-10-2013, 01:18 PM
Udrih also had his ego hurt, I think it was 2009, when he wanted assurance before Eurobasket that he will be a starter. When our coach didn't want to promise him anything, he left training camp. In 2011 he didn't come because he had a wedding. For comparison, Goran Dragic had a wedding this year, during training camp, was given a day off and everything was fine. But for Udrih... I have no words for him, if I were in charge of the media, I wouldn't even report about him anymore because of his actions.

Meanwhile Lorbek might be following his steps as he always has some excuses. In 2011 he said he won't play but then like whole country almost made a revolution and he changed his mind. This year he is not playing because of a rutine surgery, which has ca. 1 month rehab. And we all know when European clubs finish their season...

ujNEJdB3W9c

very curious about his situation in Brooklyn. couldn't crack the rotation last season and now he faces KG and AK playing his position. (and I'm pretty sure AK got also kind of a PT guarantee to sign that ridiculous contract).
anyway, even if they all say Prokhorov doesn't care about money, not even about double figure millions, considering the tax he will cost the Nets about 12 million this year and 9-12 million next season. even Prokhorov might find a better use for that money. I'm pretty sure his shooting show at the Eurobasket will remind some teams about what Teletovic can do. and there are some teams that could just absorb his contract. (not the Spurs though and I also didn't want to start a "how can we get Teletovic" discussion. even if he in fact would be a more talented Matt Bonner)

I just came back from the game (was rocking Spurs t-shirt :hat) and I must say that I agree with Bruno about French coach.

Especially his rotations are very strange. I was keeping eye on Tony - coach played him whole 3rd quarter and first minute in 4th quarter. This is already strange, because you don't play your best player whole quarter if you know that it will be a close game. When it was 9 minutes left in a game, he pulled Parker on the bench, and I thought it's just a quick rest for minute or so, but I was wrong. He kept Parker on bench until it was 5 or 4 minutes left, but even then Parker had to stand up and walk to coach and request a substitution (coach didn't call him). This was really strange, you don't rest your best players until it's almost too late to save the game...

And yeah, Batum is awful, he passed the ball to Lithuanian player or in out of bounds at least 3 times in the beginning of the game. He seemed to me like he wasn't really interested in playing a game.

Tony was good, but nothing above average. Also missed a couple of free throws.
Diaw was passing the ball a lot, I especially liked his passes to Ajinca, which were big for French team in 3rd quarter when Ajinca made 3 baskets after Boris' passes (I think!).
Nando disappointed me defensively, he was really bad at defensing 3 point shots and backdoor cuts. He scored most of his points when the game was already decided.

All in all I wasn't entirely impressed by French team, I think they will need to fix some things if they want to get a medal.

I don't know, at some point it looked like other players weren't following his ideas, but on the other hand it looked like he didn't even care to put too much effort into his plays. Although he played some good defense in 2nd half. I don't know what's up with him, maybe motivation? But it's just my bold guess.

Today Lithuania defended Parker really good, he was double teamed a lot of times. However, France didn't play good defense at all, Lithuanians could get to the basket too easy too many times for my taste.

I think that Batum struggles with his role on this team. He has to take on a lot more responsiblity on the offensive end than he is used to because he is the only guy apart from TP who can break down a defense and get to the basket. Instead he is mostly spotting up in the corner and often passes up driving lanes when coming off picks. You rarely see him being really aggressive and looking to score consistently throughout a game, especially when his shot is not on. I remember him playing for Nancy during the lockout where the whole offense was run through him and he was a beast bullying people on post ups, that's the guy France needs more of.

Bruno
09-11-2013, 06:45 PM
Batum is struggling because he is mentally weak. He has great skills and physical tools but his head isn't following. He check out of games when he faces some difficulties.

For FNT coach, one of his weakness is that he will always pick the road that is the easiest for him instead of picking the road that will make France the better team. For example, when picking players and determining their roles, his priority will be to avoid conflicts and have an easy roster to manage. He will go with players that fit his system and will be happy with the role they have on the team. Tweaking his system or managing egos seems to be too complicate for him.

At the end, France might get a medal because they still are in a good position to reach the QF and after that, it's a single game elimination tournament, but it won't change that they have a poor coach.

09-12-2013, 12:23 AM
why are the French underachievers in FIBA despite having a lot of NBA players? Can anyone explain (especially Bruno)?

They don't have good shooters, so the defending team just has to pack the paint, which is easier under FIBA rules than in NBA.

France still has a slim chance to win the first place in this game but they have to beat Latvia and then blow out Serbia.

Croatia gained a lot of confidence by beating Slovenia in OT. I could easily see them getting a medal. I think Spain, Italy, Croatia and Greece will advance from this group, Serbia, Lithuania, France and Latvia from the other group.

It will be tough for Slovenia to proceed. Either Croatia or Greece will need to suck at some point if we want to move to quarterfinals. Saturday's game against Greece might be the most important game for Slovenia.

Beli is 1/11 right now.

I'm not a huge follower of Belinelli, but from what I have seen, that seems to be one of his problems. He's a Jekyll/Hyde type of player. He'll go and put up 20 one night, and then put up 2 the next. His consistency leaves something to be desired.

While I'm sure Pop is going to give him the green light to shoot, we'll see how he manages the new rotations and minutes which, as we all know, can be sporadic at best.

Well, at least Beli won't be asked to carry as much of the Spurs offense as he had to carry today. As it seemed to be his initial focus, it's also disappointing to see that his playmaking skills were neutralized so early in this contest.

The focus of passing on the Spurs will give Beli better shot selection and clearer drivers than the ones he had to create for himself today -his multiple failed layups made me wish he had tried stepbacks or some other jumper after creating space for himself. I recall the only clear shot that Beli took he made. At the same time Slovenia guarded him well and he did not or could not counter.

Slovenian defenders did everything to stop him from getting into any kind of rythm, even if that meant fouling. We basicaly threw every guard except Gogi against him, guarding him closely. He won't get that kind of attention on the spurs.

It was the italian defense that failed them the most though.

Belinelli's Seen Growth, Now Wants WinsBy Dimitris Kontos

Italy suffered their first defeat at EuroBasket 2013 on Thursday night, 84-77 to hosts Slovenia, but maintain intact their chances in the race for a quarter-final spot from Second Round Group F.

The Azzurri will punch their ticket to the last eight of the tournament if they win their game against Croatia on Saturday.

A big part of their hopes rest upon Marco Belinelli, and anyone who converses with the star guard will be assured that he is up to the challenge.

"I think it's important to play for the national team, for our country, to play the best we can," Belinelli told fibaeurope.com.

"I really care about this team, it is important for me as a player to grow, and also for the growth of basketball and young players in Italy.

"Two years ago we didn't play a good EuroBasket but right now we have the possibility to play well, we believe we are a good team and we are not scared of anyone."

Belinelli is averaging 14.8 points, four rebounds and 2.8 assists-per-game for Italy so far in the tournament.

"In this team I try to help everybody, I try to be the leader on this team," he admitted.

"I try to help my teammates to stay together on the court and off the court, I think it's part of my motivation right now.

"I mean I am 27 now, I think you need to grow every day as a player but at the same time it's time to win and improve as a group."

Slovenia will probably defeat Finland tomorrow and go to the quarterfinals with the first seed. France will be second or third. So we're not going to face each other. Slovenia should play Ukraine in quarterfinals, not bad at all.

I expect tomorraow : Greece def. Croatia, Spain def. Ital and Slovenia def. Finlan. The classification would be in this case : 1. Slovenia, 2. Spain, 3. Croatia, 4. Italy.

For some reason I just hope we don't get France in the quarterfinals...

Seems more and more likely to happen... :(

Don't worry guys. Dragič will make Parker his bitch again. wuahahahaha :rollin

So it's France most likely. I just don't see Spain getting eliminated. Damn we can't even tank haha, worst case is 2nd place in the group. If Croatia wins, Maljkovic should rest the players against Finland as a win will mean absolutely nothing. Heck, it would probably be even better if we lose, more motivation against France. :lol

Actually what am I saying, I prefer France to Lithuania and Serbia.

Was hoping for Slovenia-France finals or something. :hat
