I don't know why but I'd rather see us play France than Ukraine. The mental status of our team was always shitty, especially in elimination games. So if they do get Ukraine I really hope they don't fuck up, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they lose.

I'm just afraid "the real France" might show up only now.. If that's so, we are effed...

It's going to be France versus either Slovenia or Spain in QF. If FNT doesn't raise their level by a huge margin, it will be a blowout loss and I have some doubts they will be able to do so. FNT defense just hasn't been good this whole summer.
But I've liked what Nando has done this summer, which led me to some reasonable optimism for the next season.

Slovenia always had troubles playing France :( and if we win that qf (big if) we probably play winner of Serbia/Spain :(. Meanwhile Croatia will have a highway to medal - all because they beat us :pctoss

Was France playing to win against Serbia? If so, they don't look good at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Serbia at all, just thought that France would finish higher in the group standings with all the talent that they have. Finishing 3rd with all the NBA talent that they have isn't too good at all.

Parker was surely coasting in that game and he is what makes France good. Aside of TP, France has a bunch of good but not great players with Diaw, De Colo, Batum and Gelabale, a weak bench and a bad coach. That's not enough to beat solid teams.

If Spain beat Italy, they won't face Serbia in QF.

Depending on the result Spain can finish anywhere from first to fifth today.
Damn, 2nd overtime now in Greece-Croatia game.

gonna be a good game, hope France will bring his A game. I'm not concerned by Parker he will deliver and I believe Diaw too, big ? will be batum. If Batum is in, France will win imho

It's nice to see how France sucked so far, but against Slovenia they will all play on a superstar level. I expect Batum to go 6/6 from three and Diaw to score 25.

Not only that, Croatia's confidence is sky high. as far as their commentators are concerned, only great unjustice can keep them from winning it all. The commentators today were appaled about all the fouls they went against them and all the fouls that didn't go their way. One of them rambled about conspiracy to get Slovenia to first place so we could play Ukraine, when they were unable to pull away at the end of the regular time... :vomit:

Croatia is 70% dependable on Bogdanovic. He made some big shots not only in this game, but also before. If the opposing team can stop him, Croatia is very limited. They will probably get past Ukraine but I don't see them winning against Spain/Lithuania.

Sorry man, but we're like 80% dependable from Goran. When he's on the bench you can see how the team sucks. Now in this big game I don't really count on others like Lorber or Joksimovic to do something special, but Goran needs to play his best game.

Yes, if Spain wins, they play Lithuania in quarterfinals; Winner plays winner of Croatia/Ukraine. Lithuania or Spain have much better chance to knock out Croatia than Italy/Serbia.

Fixed that for you ;)
Yes, Goran is our best player, but we've seen other players step up - Lorbek, younger Dragic, Begic with his defense... Who stepped up for Croatia? Ukic with his fadeaway airball for the win? :lol Tomic who sometimes plays like a pussy and falls down every time he gets blocked? I don't know, man....

LOL sorry. :D
I like how Zoran, Begič and Lorbek played. Even Josksimovis and Murič play pretty good. But in a game against France I expect more from our main guys like Goran and Nachbar, who really needs to step up and not just shoot stupid threes. If Goran can play like against the Greece then that would be amazing. I'm not really worried about our game, cause I know they will fight all game, but I am worried about France turning into an all-star team against us.

Bellinelli just clanked his fifth three pointer this quarter (4 were open spot ups), just not his day. Meanwhile Marc is dominating for Spain.

"As athletes, winning is what makes us tick. The NBA finals, even 3 month after it, is still fresh in my mind. To be so close of a title and not being able to get it, it's hard to live. It creates a thirst of titles. I still had it before but... We will do everything to not let it slide this time.

Great news!!!
**
From the other Diaw thread, looks like we were right on point:
Being that close to the title for the first time in his career hopefully gave him the realization that being just a bit more aggressive here and there can help in close games/series.
Boris has really had a different mindset with FNT this summer: he isn't playing at all the passive basketball he usually plays. I'm not sure exactly why he has changed his attitude and how long the new Diaw will last, but it's somewhat likely that the awfully painful loss against Heat has something to do with it.

This Eurobasket formula is just so bad. There are days like today with meaningless games and teams tanking to get a better bracket. It's also too long with 11 games in 19 days for the winning team.
To me, the good Eurobasket will start this Wednesday and last 5 days until the final on Sunday. The single elimination format will make it way more interesting.

Slovenia France is really hard to predict. Slovenia plays at home and has played some strange games - they play bad against weaker teams, and way better against great teams. Interesting. On the other hand, France... It's strange. They haven't won any games agains the best teams, but as a fan of Slovenian NT I am afraid they might show the best basketball so far in the next game.

In today's newspaper, Boris on why he has been more aggressive this summer with FNT:
"As athletes, winning is what makes us tick. The NBA finals, even 3 month after it, is still fresh in my mind. To be so close of a title and not being able to get it, it's hard to live. It creates a thirst of titles. I still had it before but... We will do everything to not let it slide this time.
hey Boris, it still pisses most of us off too. Pop is not even going to have to say a word to anyone in training camp, he's not going to have to show any video of last season's playoffs either. No motivation is going to be needed at all.
btw Belinelli doesn't seem to have developed into the shooter I thought he would be when he first entered the league. I really hope he is better than Gary Neal, at this point it seems like he might be a bit of an average shooting percentage chucker. He's going to have to play better defense and drive to the rim more than Neal did to make up for his shooting. Hopefully, Chip can help him get more consistent shooting the ball. He seems to be all over the place and very inconsistent when it comes to shooting. Does he have any potential to play a little bit of PG?

Belinelli has more of a set shot (reminds me of Brent Barry in that regard) and in the Italy offense, seems like most of the players have to be set up to score; they take a lot of difficult shots off screens. He will get better looks with the Spurs but he isn't as explosive as Neal in terms of scoring. I would however consider Belinelli more consistent than Neal because he doesn't rely on his jumper and won't take as many bad shots as Neal.
Belinelli is definitely a better ball handler than Neal and with more size he is able to get to the basket; which opens up things for the offense: score, draw a foul, pass to open shooter, etc.
Defense TBD.

The things going for us are that France doesn't really have much of an outside shoot aside from perhaps deColo, and our biggest strength so far has been the rim protection, the other one is obviously the home court. Refs will need to allow us to play physical D if we are to be competitive. Nachbar's play should be the key, Lakovič will also need to suck as least as possible.

so true.
the formula they played till 2005 was so much better:
16 teams, 4 groups, 3 games.
the winner of each group qualifies directly for the QF.
the 2nd place teams plays an elimination game vs. the 3rd of another group. the winner goes to the QF.
that modus was pretty good.
first the teams tried much harder to win their group.
and the elimination games were absolut heart breaker.
(I remember in 2003 the elimination games produced some of the best moments of the whole championship.)
now they have like 20 more games, but all games before the QF are so much less exciting, many are meaningless and the overall quality went down significantely.

The problem with the old format was that the winners had a long break, often resulting in getting out of rhythm completely. Maybe emulating the WC format would be the best...

I would be fine with the Eurobasket coming back to the pre-2005 format. They can even do it with 24 teams (4 groups of 6 teams) and 12 teams advancing for the barrage/quarter-final round. Another option would be a 24 teams Eurobasket (still 4 groups of 6 teams) with 16 teams advancing to the eighth-finals. On way or another, they should jest get rid of that second phase with two groups they have today.
Another issue is teams tanking to get a easier opponent in QF or SF that should be solved with a partial draw being done at the end of the group stage.

I disagree here. in 2005 it was either 4 or 5 days off for the group winners, 2003 it was just 3 days or 4 days.
the group games were much more intense, so some days off after 3 hard games is exactly what you want for your team. you don't lose your rhythm in that span. (did the Spurs lose their rhythm during the 10 days before the finals started?)

France And A Quiet Stroll For De ColoCombo guard Nando De Colo got his first taste of a major tournament at EuroBasket 2009 and has been a staple of the French national team ever since.
EuroBasket 2013 however could have been a break in his international career.
The 26-year-old completed a long and often difficult rookie season in the NBA with play-off finalists San Antonio Spurs, and could have preferred to spend his summer free time far from Slovenia.
But the thought of not responding to coach Vincent Collet's call did not cross his mind, as for him playing for France goes hand-in-hand with his personal development.
"This summer I wanted to come to the national team because since three-four years we've been working together and we want to do something important for our country," De Colo told fibaeurope.com
"I also try to work on myself, to improve and be prepared for next season too, and I can do both at the same time.
"I don't compare club and national team, of course last year I played less than I used to in the past but it's not because I play more for the national team that I want to play for myself, I am here for the team."
"Of course it's also good for me to play in the summer more time and get into game rhythm, it's good for me and my next season."
De Colo has been around with Les Bleus long enough now to be able to compare the French side that will do battle with hosts Slovenia on Wednesday for a semi-final spot at EuroBasket 2013, to previous reiterations of the national team.

First time I heard about that kind of format I was WTF is this shit?
That, to me, does not make any sense.
Easier and more natural is having groups and then playoff format. 4 groups is enough.
http://www.eurohoops.net/2013/09/eurobasket-2/33480
The rumors of teams tanking games in order to chose opponent in the quarterfinals and the fact that two weeks were spend before reaching the climax of Eurobasket are making FIBA Europe think about changes in the competition format.
The expansion to 24 teams proved a success, with many countries investing into their national teams program. However the current Eurobasket format proved to be quite long and maybe that kind of explains the empty seats at Stozice Arena and also the second group phase creates the conditions in which a team may not desire to win a specific game.
FIBA Europe would like to improve the format and the possibility of changes is strong. In that case the new format will probably include only one group phase with the four top teams of each group advancing and then playing knock out games until the final.

"The expansion to 24 teams proved a success, with many countries investing into their national teams program. However the current Eurobasket format proved to be quite long and maybe that kind of explains the empty seats at Stozice Arena and also the second group phase creates the conditions in which a team may not desire to win a specific game."
Seats were empty because of high ticket prices. For 2nd round of Eurobasket, the cheapest ticket was 17. I understand Slovenians won't go watch Belgium-Latvia for 17.

Well this probably ended our chances of ever winning a medal. No good enough young players, bleak future.
Yes, sadly the swan song of Slovenian basketball. We had a good-ish decade...
Well, young Dončič has the potential to be a superstar... But that is still far away.... And who knows who else we will be able to put around him.

Isn't the main reason you brought foreign coach the fact you had no results with the domestic ones? Why you choosed Majkovic is a million dollar question,he's pretty much done.

Well yeah and we didn't get any better results is what I'm saying.
But to be honest the teams of the past two Eurobaskets were probably our weakest.

Yeah I'm not sold on him. Thing is, no idea how his competition looked like, right now he could just be bigger than everyone else... We'll see in 5 or 6 years. I guess in that time there could be some good new players but they'll be young too. Which makes me think that for about 8 years we won't stand a chance for sure. Unless Z. Dragic and Muric and Blazic and Vidmar take it to another level. Lack of good bigs is another problem.

No, we're definitely done for the next decade, and given our economic situation, lack of top euro competition and our size, most likely even for longer... My guess is as soon as next Eurobasket we don't even make top 12

Right but at the age of 14 he's still a decade away and you can't build a competitive team with just one player...

For a country that small (2M people), what Slovenia is doing in basketball is quite remarkable. They also deserves a lot of props for not taking the easy road of giving the Slovenian citizenship to an American player to help their NT.

Tried that - didn't work out :oops
Edit: not to mention we were very generous with citizenship to ex-yu players - Golemac, Čapin, Preldzič, Begič to name just a few...

Refs had nothing to do with this loss. France was just better.
As for Lakovic, there was no other point guard.
Refs were ok. Lakovic sucks, we have Joksimovic.
Joksimovič spent most of his career playing point...
Actually not true, his original position is SG.
I don't think Maljkovic did such a bad job in this eurobasket. You just faced a much better team. With Udrih and Lorbek it would probably be a different situation.
It is a good job when Lakovic guards Tony? Ok.........

09-18-2013, 05:24 PM
Well, I think this one is on Maljković. He left out Joksimović, he completely forgot Murič (second half), his feeling for substitutions and timeouts was gone and he had no plan how to stop Parker or at least I didn't see one. Also he didn't try to change anything on defense ( Is zone allowed only against Slovenia?) There are a lot of things that can be thrown in Maljkovićs face, but one thing is clear. Slovenia lacks talent for that last step. There is a lot of solid players, but not a single great one that you need to go all the way. All those shortcomings of Goran Dragić were exposed today ( bad shooting, lack of brain) but that man left his heart on the floor. Same goes for every single player that played today.
Kudos for that.

I've never seen a 14 YO kid dominate all aspects of the game like him, he's not just a manchild overpowering due to his earlier development like a Musli. Rubio for instance was an incredible talent at that age but he still had quite evident flaws. Although of course that doesn't mean anything, many things could go wrong.

Part of interview with Tony that concerns Spurs...
Even though you play key role for the Spurs, you always play for your national team.
TP: Yes, they asked me to play a little less, so I will be ready for next season with Spurs(laugh). I have great relationship with the franchise and I am satisfied that Pop understands my wish to play for my national team. I'm proud to play for France.
Do you think you can fight for a ring in NBA again?
TP: Definitely, Belinelli is huge gain for us. Coach Pop will do amazing work again, because me and Manu will play a little less minutes, and because younger players like Green and Kawhi are getting better and better. I think we will have our chance again. As a player you always want to win, even if you do not succeed every time.
Have you ever dreamed about Ray Allen's 3 in Game 6?
TP: No, it's basketball, it's life. I am lucky to have won the NBA 3 times already. When I'm 95 and dying, I will definitely not think about Game 6. I am completely satisfied with my achievements so far.
Was it harder to lose Eurobasket final or NBA finals?
TP: Definitely it was harder for me to get over that loss to Miami because we were so close to winning.

Interesting...according to this article he also said the opposite. Not sure if its the same interview...

Nope, I translated the interview from Slovenian media: http://www.sport-tv.si/d183488/Novice/Veliki_intervju_Tony_Parker_Hvalezen_Spursom.html But interesting to see the opposite in different article. Maybe our journalist got him wrong. :lol

Because it was a good game against France, because for such small country that's awesome to be that competitive, because you have a nice crowd and because I knew you would kick serbian ass
:tu
Will be rooting for you tomorrow against Spain!

Well Italy clearly needs to get a playbook and some bigs.
77-81, Italy had their chances but big scoring drought to start 4th was their downfall
Datome disappearing in the 2nd half was the key. maybe his hurting knee. and Aradori's mistakes.
I liked what Allesandro Gentile showed in this game and during the whole championship. almost became the teams top scorer. (14.7 PPG, Beli has 15.1). he is still only 20 and will be in the draft next year. mocks have him as a 1st round bubble, so he definitely will be in the Spurs range. a bit slow, but strong and the kid definitely can score is and quite a potential mismatch when he plays the 2.

I asked the journalist who wrote the article for Slovenian media.. He said ESPN clearly hasn't understood Parker's sarcasm. He even offered me to come watch the video myself, so I kinda believe him he understood him right. Or should I go watch the video? Lol.

I recall Tony saying something similar soon after the finals...that even on his death bed his last thought will be about Game 6. I think he is just trying to be humorous by using an extreme example to say how much the loss hurt. "I am so hungry I can eat a horse." That kind of thing. Of course I'm not hungry enough to eat a horse and of course Tony won't be thinking about Game 6 on his death bed. But I am damn hungry and that loss hurt a lot.

I watched a video of Parker saying the exact same thing (when I will be 90, dying on my bed...) in french earlier this summer. While he said it as a joke,it definitively isn't a sarcasm. Just before it, he said that it was the biggest loss of his career and that he will never get over it.
For people speaking french, you can check on this video at the 6:40min mark:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x12d9nf_conference-tony-parker_sport
A translation of what he said:
http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220510
"It will never be over. It's the biggest loss of my career. When I will be 90, I will die saying "argh, game 6". That's how it is. It's the beauty of sports. Sometimes, it's wonderful, sometimes it's cruel. This time, it was cruel for us. I will never be able to get over this loss."

The fight to get the 4 wildcards for the 2014 WC will be tough with one of Serbia and Italy joining the race. China, Brazil ,Canada, Greece, Germany, Serbia or Italy, Turkey and Russia will all have strong arguments to get a WC.

Interview with RC was just on our tv...
He said he is here in Slovenia to see Spurs players and also other players, including 2 the Spurs have rights of (remind me who the 2nd player is, Sanikidze and ?), and also mentioned that he is very happy to see how Belinelli is playing at this tournament. He was also asked about Slovenian NT and Goran Dragic and Buford joked that Spurs FO wasn't smart enough when they traded him after draft. In the end there was a question about the upcoming season and he said that the Spurs need to be healthy and that you never know what happens. He didn't really comment on the finals, although it was included in a question.
