You can subscribe to all FIBA competition streams here: https://secure.livebasketball.tv/buy?ICID_HOM_SB1

(But there are usually some streams for free to be found if you can live with the lower quality.)

And a prospect, Sanikidze is there with Georgia. Hungary didn't make it so Hanga isn't there. Richards didn't make the GB squad. Latvia made it, but Bertrans is injured, and the story is the same with Livio Jean-Charles and France (and both of them are young to make the senior national squad anyways).

Tomorrow both Italy (vs. Russia) and France (vs. Germany) play at the same time, 9pm in Europe, 3pm et, if I calculated correctly. Links will be available on the site I mentioned in a previous post.

Richards didn't make the GB squad.

He actually quit the British national team a year ago and decided to play for Jamaica. Strangely enough I don't think that he has played a single game for them yet since then. He is definitely missing from the FIBA Americas tournament roster and wasn't with the team during their preparation.

I wouldn't count out Macedonia as a darkhouse medal contender. Opposing teams will probably be better prepared for them after their strong showing the last time so they won't be able to sneak up on anyone but if McCalleb is on top his game they could get in the semi finals again. They beat Greece and played Spain close in friendly games.
I am really looking forward to that juicy France-Spain finals matchup though.

You can add Javtokas with Lithuania. Lorbek won't play for Slovenia because of a knee surgery. Bertans, despite his age, would have definitively played for Latvia and be a key piece for them without his injury.

I did know about Javtokas with Lithuania and how Lorbek did not make it, I just figure that neither of them will ever figure in the Spurs future... They are too old. I think that this offseason is pretty much Sanikidze's last shot too.

Janis Berzins from Latvia is very interesting prospect too. I watched him play in U20 European championship this year (Latvia won silver) and he is a real talent with great athleticism, rebounding ability etc. 20 years old, 6ft 8. Interesting player with a lot of potential.

France looks good, Spain should be there, Italy could be a nice surprise, after that all the usual suspects (Russia, Greece, ex-Yu, Lithuania). I think Slovenia will not make top 8, i think we will have enough troubles even advancing to the next round...

My prediction: 1. France, 2. Spain, 3. Russia

Strong first half for Sanikdze against Poland, 11 pts on 4/5 shooting and 3 rebs. Meanwhile Hedo is stinking it up going scoreless (0/3) midway through the second quarter.

Really good a performance by Sankidze in the second half too, finishing with 23 pts and 6 rebounds. He really showed his whole offensive repertoire: Driving to the basket against big men/going into the post against guards, spotting up for 3s and finishing on the fast break.

Aaand Hedo just bricked away Turkey's chance to beat Finland.

Well, I can see french federation going after him if Slovenia waives him after a disappointing Euro. Maljkovic has a great status in France because he was the coach of the only french team that ever won an Euroleague. The issue was that it was in 1993.

Few years ago Ettore Messina was ready to coach the NT. I still can't believe they didn't give him the job. He would have cost a lot of money but I'm' sure they could have paid him.

I have some serious doubts around Sanikidze true age.

When Shermadini, another Georgian player, was in the draft, a lot of scouts/teams thought he was 3 years older than what his papers said. Even if it's unfair and even if it isn't hasn't been proven that Shermadini was 3 years older, this story throw a suspicion about the age of the Georgian prospects. Why if people there have started to fake players age, would have they did it only for one player?

Wanna trade with Maljkovic? :lol It can't be worse, tbh.
Slovenia is playing like shit, without any idea on the offense, only shooting those goddamn threes, and only makes 5 out of 24 iirc. Psychological preparation? Our staff probably never heard of it. Choking from free throws, winning by 2 against Chech Republic, whose biggest star is Vesely, garbage time player in the nba.

Slovenia = f:lolcked if we keep playing like this (which I don't doubt... 2011 all over again)

09-04-2013, 05:26 PM
France played without intensity. Defensively, it was just horrible. But we have to give credit to Germans who scored a lot of big buckets down the stretch.
Bruno You think Vincent Collet is that bad ? He's not very charismatic but he has a nice playbook. And if he's waived, I wouldn't be surprised if Jacques Monclar comes from anywhere to take that spot.

I think Collet is a good coach on a basketball level but, like for other french coaches, it's really hard for him to lead the team. Players are all year year, in Europe or in the NBA, playing at a way higher level than the level where the coach is coaching and that's an issue. Collet just hasn't the status to scream on a player like Batum when he is screwing it up. FNT needs a coach that draws some respects.

Monclar was close of being FNT GM few years ago but I don't see him being a candidate to be a coach while he hasn't coach for a lot of years. He is also on a big project which will be to have a top Euroleague team in Paris with QSI. I wouldn't be also surprised if the ultimate goal of that is to bring a NBA franchise in Paris. Bercy should be fully renovated in 2015.

Didn't know about Messina. Similar story as in Slovenia somewhere between 2003-2005; Tanjevic offer himself to run Slovenian NT (much stronger than), however he suposed to be "to expensive".
Now we have even more expensive Maljkovic with the contract we can't brake (unless we pay all) - who ever signed that contract should be prosecuted.

Ironically, Slovenian basketball federation said goodbye to Zdovc, who led team to 4th place in 2009 (we'd probably get a medal if Dragic wasn't injured), was successful and most importantly, he was cheap and we didn't pay him a couple of 100k € just to lead our team.

Expected letdown for Germany after that emotional win yesterday. Pleiss had the easiest of putbacks that would have forced a second overtime but somehow that 7-1 guy could't finish it. Belgium also fouled up 2 at the end of the game and it actually worked out for them.

he will. and I said some weeks ago that I wouldn't be surprised, if he even becomes the starter at the 2 during the season. (this would also solve the back up SF question, b/c DG would move to this role.)
if Kawhi gets a more important role on offense, a good ball handler, shooter and passer like Beli might be the better compliment to support Kawhi's offense game than Green could be. and Kawhi will compensate the weak board production from Beli.

I think it is time to bring him in to training camp; he has the skill set to play back up SF and some small ball PF (has similar build to AK47). Has the ability to hit the 3 ball, can rebound, and play some defense...what else do we need from the back up 3? And I've noticed he is one of the go to players for Georgia in late game situations, plus he isn't afraid to shoot/make big shots. He is one those players that can fill the stat sheet (I like those type of players). Plus whatever his real age is, he still has athleticism.

It will take Spurs offering him a guaranteed contract to have Sanikdize leaving on the table the €400K he has left on his contract with Siena. And I really don't find he has similar build to Kirilenko. He should be about 30 lbs lighter than him.

If we get the guy who shows up for the Georgian National team - the guy who says "It doesn't matter Win or lose, we have to fight every game", I'd be willing to give that guy a guaranteed vet min - he brings everything he's got. Also, isn't he going to be dumped (somehow) by Sienna? There is something in the Sanikidze thinktank thread, http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124732&page=7.

Rough start for Belinelli, 0-5 from the field. He had to create a lot for himself though, Italy really lacks a point guard who can make plays for others.

Not a good first half for him, 0-8 and just 2pts off FTs. He has been mostly used as a point guard to run high pick and rolls pretty much every other time down the floor. But there's not much of a roll threat so Finland could really focus their attention on Belinelli there. Itay should run him off screens more instead of just giving him the ball at the top of the key and asking him to create, it's just too predictable.

ata
09-07-2013, 11:11 AM
BTW: I was watching Spain-Czech; until 4Q it was pretty even; if Czech would have two more decent player, it would be close. Spain really seems to be vulnerable

jyra
09-07-2013, 12:24 PM
Italy makes a big run with Belinelli on the bench and a smaller, quicker lineup on the floor. Much better ball and player movement than before. The defensive intensity also picked up. Seems like Finland just ran out of gas in the second half, just launching shots from the outside but hitting very few of them.

Next up Sanikidze against Slovenia, should be a fun one.

Didn't watch the game, how was Sanikdize?

He did a really great job on the boards as the stats show, repeatedly pulling down contested rebounds using his hops. His points came mostly in the first quarter where he scored 11 of his 17. He hit a spot up three, a nice little hook out of the P&R and drove against a closing out defender to earn FTs. I forgot the remaining ones but he always ran hard on the fast break and hit another big three late in the game to keep his team alive.
Defensively he didn't really stand out apart from his rebounding as Georgia was playing zone for long stretches but he looked active on his rotations.

Other observations:
- I like his ball handling ability. He can push the ball after coming down with the rebound to go coast to coast or drive by the close out. That has led to a lot of drawn fouls.
- He doesn't set good screens. When he screens, he rarely makes solid contact with the defender.

I would definitely not mind to see him with the Spurs but it doesn't seem like they will give out any guaranteed contracts this late in the offseason.

Unfortunately he can't shoot the 3 and/or FTs

Lack of a 3 point shot isn't that much an issue for a PF but he had to improve his FT shooting and be around 60% to avoid being the target of international fouls.

Even if you had to be careful mostly because this Eurobasket quality is quite low, Vesely being that good with Czech Republic strongly hint that his struggles in the NBA have a lot to do with Wizards being a joke of a team.

Fun game to watch.
Croatia is not that good but has balls, a coach and plays zone.
I am not sure who is coaching Slovenia but it's not that old gentleman on the bench.
The offense against the zone was less than pathetic.
They looked like they never expected it.

Texas_Ranger
09-08-2013, 04:18 PM
To me it looks like Slovenia is still experimenting. Right now we should know who are the guys that play 25+ minutes and who are the role players, but no. LOL @ Blazic and Lakovic. Especially Lakovič who's always the best player of the opposing team.

Meeh, who cares, I already knew that if Slovenia gets a medal it'll be cause of the refs. Also i don't see us winning Greece and Italy. Even Finland can defeat this team. Just play zone and you'll win.

Once again fuck to all of the Slovenian players that didn't want to play for this country, cause if they did, Slovenia would have at least 1 medal.

At least Slovenia's not Canada, aka the gold standard of players inexplicably not playing for their country. If it doesn't change, it'll be more costly in their case too, because they have the potential to become the second best team in the world.
