It's really more about the offer here, there are like 10 decent to good prospects and one overhyped gimmick in this draft class, that's more than enough to go bpa in the draft.. After all, only needy teams take qbs in the second round, so the situation is the same as the first round except with a lot less game changing talents available.

I'd say there's a significant difference between decent and good. If your're one of these franchises that have sucked for a while and/or desperately need a QB you can't pass up on a guy that's good on your board simply because there might be a decent guy in the 2nd round. Manziel, Bridgewater and Bortles are all sure first rounders.

Please. Did Luck, Rodgers, Brees, Brady have the kind of hype Manziel had? You're a Freshman Heisman winner, which means you are good enough to challenge for a title, and expectations are unusually high, and he feeds into his own hype. People like to use last year as an excuse because he had no defense, it's only fair to point out the year he had a solid one, and did not win. Because that is what it is going to take in the NFL for him, going to the right system, with a great defense and running game, like Wilson had.

“If Russell Wilson can take a team to the Super Bowl,” said one NFL talent evaluator, “Manziel can do all that and more.”

“Ask Nick Saban how big Manziel is,” another NFL talent evaluator said.

“He’s the reason they win -- and you can’t say anything better about a player,” another NFL talent evaluator said. “If you are the reason, that’s a big statement.”

Manziel has a big man’s feet and hands in a small man’s body. He has the arm to make all the throws from the pocket and another scout raved about his “Larry Bird instinct” -- the ability to see everyone and everything on the field.

"He made me say 'Wow!''' Warner said on NFL Network during Johnny Football's spectacle at Texas A&M.

"I don't think there's very many guys even at the National Football League level that can make those kind of throws,'' Warner told Manziel on the NFL Network set. "With what we've seen, he's been extremely impressive. Overall, I think he's been really, really solid.'

Guess that settles it. He's the next Andrew Luck tbh.

If anyone wants to have a discussion on something Im open to it. I gave you the time until I realized how childish your arguments were. And come on dude you brought up guys like Vince Young and Terrell Pryor. You brought up Tim Tebow and Tim Couch to downplay his stats in the SEC. You compared his 'inefficiency' to Kobe's inefficiency even though the guy completed 70% of his passes.

i brought up guys like vince young and terrelle pryor as guys who's success depends largely on their feet. even you would acknowledge that the thing that makes Johnny Manziel special is the way he uses his feet. i dont think qb's who's success hinges on their feet are necessarily a winning formula. i never said his passing ability was equal to those guys. as for tebow/couch, im making a point that you can't take college stats and extrapolate them to the pros. same with colt brennan, who is actually remarkably similar to manziel when you watch his college footage.

i brought up the inefficiency thing because you said "his efficiency is lowered because he makes a lot of throws from outside the pocket" to which i responded that im not going to give a guy bonus points because he is purposely making inefficient throws by constantly breaking the pocket

It's a completely different level of dependence though. I gave you the Megatron/tall scrub example. Sure they both have a dependence on size but obviously Megatron has a lot more in his arsenal. How dumb would it be to ignore that? That's basically what you were doing.

I never said Football will put up similar stats in the pros. I also agreed that putting up stats at a top conference is not a requirement, cited Romo and Flacco as examples. This dude Chinook was trying to say they didn't matter at all though and like you was using a couple of guys to 'prove' it. There's tons of guys that had great stats in college and went on to be great in the NFL as well...so why conveniently ignore them for either of your arguments ?

i brought up the inefficiency thing because you said "his efficiency is lowered because he makes a lot of throws from outside the pocket" to which i responded that im not going to give a guy bonus points because he is purposely making inefficient throws by constantly breaking the pocket

He was never inefficient though. 1-3% less than the other guys doesn't make him an inefficient QB, much less at the same level as a Kobe Bryant. I also brought up the difference in competition which you ignored.

spurraider21
03-30-2014, 10:23 PM
this is where Tim Couch and Tebow came in. they played the same level of competition that manziel did... the conference you play in doesn't matter when it comes to your skillset being transferrable to the NFL. same with the stats. manziel could have thrown for 7000 yards and 70 td's in his last college season. his style of play is not an nfl skillset, as we've seen before and will probably see again.

Playing style is not a skillset, its a style.

He has plenty of NFL caliber skills in his skillset. His arm strength and accuracy--both inside and outside the pocket--are NFL quality. Does he need to reduce the scrambling and make more strides inside the pocket? Absolutely. But he's 21 and made major improvements there from his Freshman year to his Sophomore year. We've never seen a running QB with some of the other qualities Football has, so no we havent seen this movie yet.

Derek Carr is as fast as Manziel, is more athletic by far, is a lot taller and has a far better arm. I don't see how anyone can make a case for Manziel being a better "prospect", if we talk about prospects as such.

Fruitless debate is fruitless. He's not coming to Houston. Beyond the questions about his game translating at the pro level, Manziel is a walking media circus. If Manziel's pro day performance helped him any in Houston's eyes, Nike negated it all by selling his pro day apparel.

O'Brien is not Jerry Jones. There is no way he is going to tolerate any of this in Houston. We are talking about a guy that took down all the individual accomplishments from the locker room when he arrived...and has even issued locker tags with no names, only numbers. Manziel and the attention fest that comes with him goes completely against the foundation that BOB is trying to lay.

Derek Carr is as fast as Manziel, is more athletic by far, is a lot taller and has a far better arm. I don't see how anyone can make a case for Manziel being a better "prospect", if we talk about prospects as such.

Top end speed is the same, that's it. Quickness is a whole other story. What in the world makes you say he is more athletic by far? A lot taller and a far better arm are huge exaggerations as well. :lol

Carr beat up on a weak MWC. How'd he do in his bowl game against USC? I'm pretty sure that is worrying for GMs.

Yes we have. Vick had a stronger arm, more accurate, and with more velocity.

Vick was nowhere near as accurate as Football coming into the league. That is a blatant lie tbh.

Also, Keenum, and Manziel played in Sumlin's offense. Kolb also played in a similar offense at UH that had him produce record numbers. Yet Keenum nor Kolb didn't improvise as much as Manziel and we all know why. In a QB friendly system, you still can't stay in the pocket when there's pressure :lol

The cap hit thing is not an issue. It's absurd that you'd think so. Watt can get a new contract starting this season. Clowney wouldn't have to get one for five years. Even when Watt is in his big-money years, Clowney would either be on his rookie deal still or in the first (cheapest) years of his second contract.

Even if the cap hits were both big at the same time, it's hardly unprecedented for a team to have two linemen making big money at the same time. Suggs and Ngata, Rice and Sapp, the Williams Wall, Osi and Tuck, Freeney and Mathis. The list goes on. If the biggest question you have about the pass rush is if you can afford the talent you have, you just shut up and pay the money.

Finally, you don't draft scared of what's going to happen in five years. The NFL's too uncertain. No one knows if Watt is going to even see another contract from Houston. He may be retired or traded or released. Or whatever.

1.You are acting like I'm saying it is the sole reason or major reason why Houston should think long and hard before drafting him. :lol
2. Last I read Houston has not even begun to think about an extension for Watt.
3. A DT/DE duo is not the same thing.
4. Tuck was a 3rd round pick. Mathis was a 5th rounder. It's not like those teams had Freeney/Osi and decided to spend the top overall pick on another DE.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying Houston would be stupid to draft him. The thought of a Watt-Clowney duo is pretty tempting but let's also not act like certain shit doesn't need to be taken into consideration. It really is far from being as simple as Clowney is the BPA and that's it.

I'm no Lombardi, but after reading and watching everything I can the past month or two, I'm just not sold on Clowney.

Hopefully a team offers a great deal for the first pick and Texans can trade down to get an extra first and possibly an extra second (depending on how high a team values Clowney).

There's no standout QB this draft (although I do think Manziel has highest ceiling of the class). I'd rather them fill in the holes on both sides of trenches (RT, G, DT, DE), LB position and secondary (CB) this draft. Let Fitz, Keenum and Yates battle out the game manager position -- draft your QB next year (hopefully with one of two 1st's -- if Texans trade down). There's no QB in the draft that can make this team an instant contender anyway.

Texans are two great, three good drafts away from being relevant again-- especially w/ the yearly regression Foster has displayed the past 3 years (I think he'll be done in 2 years).

I wouldn't mind seeing Texans trying to flip Andre for a 2nd rounder this draft ( which is WR deep) either.

1 It's not a reason at all. That's the point.

2 Then why worry about the Texans not being able to afford both?

3 How is it any different?

4 We're talking about spending money on a second contract, not drafting initially. Don't change the subject. The Colts still decided to pay both their ends huge money when the time came. The Giants paid their ends AND still took a third with their first-rounder.

There are some exceptions to BPA. That's why the Ravens use their hybrid system instead. There are definitely reasons not to take Clowney first overall. It's just that already having Watt isn't one of them.

Clowney didn't really have a great season this past year, and his own coach doesn't seem all that enamored with him. Apparently Mario Williams's drills were better than Clowney's (http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/columnists/mcclain/article/Clowney-may-be-safe-bet-but-Texans-should-pick-a-5375451.php) in all but one category (40-yard dash). Having said that, though I hope and think the Texans may take Manziel #1, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to take Clowney or Mack and hoped a decent quarterback would fall to the second round. Their coach mentioned possibly drafting two quarterbacks, so they might go that route and just hope one pans out.

2. That comment was in response to you saying Watt could get a new contract this year. They could opt in for the 5th year and give him a contract then instead, so more overlapping.

3.How not? A DT is a completely different position, with a completely different skillset and function.

4. I understand that the contracts for a duo have been/can be done. I'm just pointing out that spending a top overall pick to get the second half of the duo hasn't.

A three-year gap between contracts is huge, though. Big contracts usually have a cheap first half (as far as cap hits go) and then an expensive half. So long as Watt's expensive half coincides with either Clowney's rookie deal or the cheap half of his second contract, it's not really a big deal. Then "worst case" Watt gets a new deal when Clowney gets to his expensive half, and it keeps going.

There's definitely the possibility to minimize the overlapping if the Texans are creative with the contracts or restructure. But will note that Williams' jumps to $15.8 in just the second year, Peppers got $41 mill his first three years in Chicago, etc. I really don't see how it's something you don't consider.

I didn't look at Peppers' details. But I imagine the $41 Million is in cash, not cap hit. Like if he got a $100M/6 deal with $41M guaranteed and the same amount paid over three years, they could give him $5M in guaranteed base salaries, a $24M signing bonus and a $12M guaranteed second-year option bonus.

Cap hits:

Year 1 - $5M
2 - $7.4M
3 - $9.4M

Huge front-loaded deal with small early cap hits. Sure there are some contracts which are mainly flat (like Eugene Monroe's new deal or Revis' old deal with Tampa) and some that are cap-frontloaded (DeAngelo Williams' current contract), but that just reinforces why it's not hard to give out several big contracts and make them fit under the cap.

Even though I think your argument is dumb too there were people that brought him up way before you, so it's not necessarily directed at you. They brought Vince up to compare more than just their respective 'hype and fans' too.

:lmao im pretty sure 40>32, at least in California. Jeff Mathews scored the highest

It says out of the top QB prospects. I dont even know who Mathews is so Im pretty sure he isnt a top prospect tbh.

McNair isn't Jerry. He has never meddled in draft decisions.

Smith has the final call since he's the GM but Smith is walking on thin ice as far as his job goes. He will listen to O'Brien as he is the guy that is expected to turn the team around. If he feels that Clowney is the guy, he will be the pick.

You for some reason believe that watching the commercials, replays, booth shots and snaps from the opposing defenses yields a better understand of a player's production than watching only his plays with all that other stuff cut out. Who's criticizing Mack or small schools? I'm not saying anyone is right/wrong about him. Your take is awful, abysmal, even for the standards you've established in this thread. No one is criticizing small schools. It was you who were criticizing everyone else's knowledge of them, like the fact that you went to UTSA made you a guru on Buffalo. You also just keep failing to grasp that if you cut out all of the fluff from a football broadcast, you'd only get a few minutes of actual footage. That's why game tape is so short. They're not just equal to watching the game; they're better because they cut out all the hype the commentators are giving and isolate the performance from the moment.

Twenty actual games, and you still think Manziel's passing game is NFL-caliber. You then tried to establish that by showing only his best plays -- and even those show his obvious limitations. Your entire evaluation of Manziel is inextricably tied to the fluff of the games. You think that the fact that he beat Alabama on a recovered-fumble miracle touchdown somehow translates into NFL production. It doesn't, and that's why you are a victim of hype. If you had any idea about how to evaluate a player, you wouldn't have posted that awful highlight video.

Anyways, I haven't even said I care about Mack at all. I only saw him at the combine and on that video spurraider posted. I could care less about players the Ravens haven't picked, and especially those they will never have a chance to pick. I only evaluate players after the Ravens pick them. There are obvious exceptions, like Manziel, whom I watched as much as you did. I am no scout in any sense of the word, but I did look at him, which is more than I can say for whomever the Ravens draft outside of possibly Evans. I am not arguing for Mack, or Clowney, or Watkins or whomever. I am merely pointing out how you are grasping at straws trying to legitimize your Manziel fandom at all costs. You picked arguments with people in a much stronger debate position than you (I'm talking about Mack supporters, not myself), and now you can't even seem to understand why you're losing ground on every post.

i also rarely evaluate players before the raiders draft him, but i read up on multiple scouting reports from different sources to get a consensus view on most players. there are exceptions, and this year i've watched a lot of mack, clowney, watkins, donald and a lot of the big name qb's, including the later round guys like Garappolo, Mettenberger, Carr, Savage. this is the first year i've actually tried to get a read on a lot of the big names outside of scouting reports/highlight videos

the first time i actually in depth looked into a player before the draft was actually Miles Burris, who was a mid-round prospect a few years ago. somebody on a raider forum was talking him up so i looked into him. i was enamored by his game film, and it just so happened the Raiders ended up drafting him in the 4th round :lol.

:lol Where do I start? I can't do much if you refuse to read and/or make ridiculous assumptions.

Not saying he won't be a stud, I actually don't have an opinion on the dude since I haven't really watched much of his games or tapes

^How does this lead you to conclude that I think I'm a guru on Buffalo? :lol

Also noone is questioning the validity of the tapes or saying one actual game>one tape from that same game.

^How does this lead you to conclude that I think an actual game is somehow better than tape. Especially when I went on to explain why I even brought up actual games in that same post.

Yeah, you can't really claim a W on this until Football actually fails. :lol

Pretty sure my posts (some that even included conversations directly with you) suggest I think Football can succeed in the NFL for reasons other than just flash. But again I can't do much about it if you conveniently choose to ignore those parts of my posts.

Who said my original comment had anything to do with Football? Yall are the ones that brought him up. That's another retarded assumption which again is not my fault. As far as the 'argument', I simply laughed at their regurgitated take on Mack, so as far as I'm concerned there really is no argument there. He is indeed from a small school that didn't get much exposure. Tape from six games is indeed a small amount to evaluate a guy, especially to go as far as calling him a sure thing. So where's the argument? I made a similar comment about Bortles earlier in the thread too fwiw.

You're a slippery snake, aren't you? Or at least you like to believe yourself one.

^How does this lead you to conclude that I think I'm a guru on Buffalo? :lol

I have no problem with those schools, retard. Probably watch more non-P5 college football than anyone here which is kinda the point.

Acting like watching UTSA means anything. Mack has been a top prospect all season. Of course people are going to watch him. I went to a D1AA school, but I couldn't tell you the first thing about teams in our own conference outside of records. I wouldn't try to act like other folks couldn't know about players in FCS just because I didn't.

Of course you are. You wouldn't have gone on that idiotic crusade about the length of the videos. Each video covered an entire game. The length doesn't matter.

Let me reiterate that I have no idea if Manziel will actually fail or not. I don't claim to know the future. No one has beef with you for believing him Manziel ... well, at least I don't. What I and others take issue with is your campaign for him that's based on trashing other players or at least trying to bring up propaganda for Manziel or against other potential top picks. You're main arguments for Manziel were based on pseudo-scouting backed up by YouTube highlights. You use certain things like stats and winning for Manziel, but when counter-examples are shown, you act like they are horrible comparisons because of some other stat. Then people bring up that counter-examples to that other stat, and you try to slide out of that with something else. We all went through that, so don't act like that's not what happened.

You're biggest problem is that you for some reason fancy yourself smarter than everyone else. You think that we don't know what you've been doing throughout this whole thread. You rep Manziel and try to trash folks' support of other players. First, it was Bridgewater. Then it was Bortles. Then it was Clowney. Now it's Mack. Manziel is your guy; we get it. For the most part, nobody cares about that. But you are constantly getting into debates or pissing matches without bringing anything to the table to support your side. The whole, "No one knows for sure if they'll be a star", take isn't an argument. It's not like Manziel becomes a smarter pick for the Texans just because it's possible the other players bust.

Jesus. That was in response to CN making a post suggesting I had a problem with small schools. I said I watch a lot of non-P5 football (not only UTSA), not to suggest that I'm a 'guru on Buffalo' but rather to show that I don't have a problem with them at all. Also you'd have trouble following the MAC even if you tried.

Of course you are. You wouldn't have gone on that idiotic crusade about the length of the videos. Each video covered an entire game. The length doesn't matter.

If there's anything I've been consistently bringing up it's the amount of games and the competition, not the video length. But let's just ignore that of course. Pretty sure that Baylor game isn't an entire game either. I only clicked on that one and the Ohio State game, not sure about the others.

Dude, get out of here with that. I call your takes stupid because comparing Manziel to Vince Young because they the hype surrounding them coming out of college was similar happens to actually be pretty damn stupid. Their hype was similar so let's ignore the fact that Manziel is a much more polished passer without shitty mechanics like Vince, really?

I don't fancy myself smarter than everyone. I mean I'm smarter than a guy like benefactor but so are the rest of us tbh.

And again this had nothing to do with Football. I didn't bring him up and I didn't laugh at Mack or his ability, I laughed at the fact that these niggas were acting like experts on a dude they've seen a limited amount of.
