Dre' talking like he wants out.

“Nobody’s been here as long as I have. You just kind of look at things; I’ve been thinking about things this offseason,” Johnson said. “And I just kind of wonder sometimes, ‘Is this still the place for me?’ ”

“When you bring a new coach in, you go through a rebuilding process,” Johnson said. “Some people say it’s not. Some people say it’s a quick fix. Everybody has their own opinion. But I’ve been through the situation more than once.”

“I just look at my career. … I’ve only been to the playoffs twice. I think we’ve only had three winning seasons,” said Johnson, who at least twice last season expressed his frustration on the field during games. “I don’t think any player wants to experience that. I think over time it can become very frustrating. And this offseason has been very frustrating for me; beginning of the offseason, I should say. That’s just kind of where I’m at right now.”

“I’m just taking some time, thinking about some things,” Johnson said. “You know, when I make my decision I’ll make my decision and go from there.”

Rumors now swirling that Dre' might retire. If he truly wants out, that's probably his best option. As great as he is, it will be hard to accomodate him with a trade to a winning team with his contract.

He needs to give the new coaching staff a chance, sure he sees there's no surefire QB, but they aren't really rebuilding either. And he was denied a new contract, I'm sure that pissed him off. He can either show up, or retire. But he won't leave the money on the table.

I'm hoping Savage ends up being a great quarterback. It's not just that the Texans are a team I want to see succeed, but I'd love for more teams to start drafting quarterbacks later and developing them instead of taking them in the first and giving them the keys to the franchise without them having to prove it.

First, the Texans are primed for an immediate comeback toward the middle of the NFL pack, even if the combination of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage they’ll run out at quarterback might preclude them from being a playoff contender. Virtually every metric I can find suggests they were an underrated and unlucky team last year, and that’s without considering how they repeatedly juggled quarterbacks and quit on their coach. With even average luck next year, Houston should be a 7-9 or 8-8 team. And if it has a few bounces break its way — picture Jadeveon Clowney and J.J. Watt wishboning Andrew Luck — the Texans could very well be next year’s surprise playoff team. Washington and Atlanta were also among 2013’s more unlucky teams.

So Yates didn't get released after all. Houston traded him to Atlanta for LB Akeem Dent...who I know absolutely nothing about. Even if he sucks and gets cut, props to Rick Smith for getting something for Yates instead of just dumping him...especially a veteran LB as Houston needs depth at the position.

#Texans had a full team meeting Friday to open camp. About 200 people involved, O'Brien said. #NFL

let's face the truth, even if you put peyton or brady to the texans, they wouldn't win shit, with that oline you're not going anywhere, and sending a young qb to get destroyed in his first year, is not really the best course of action. i didn't like them going with TE in the third round, that should have been a qb or another lineman imo.

I don't think you payed attention to the details. Clowney was blowing past Offensive lineman up until he was taken out. He got into the backfield pretty quick, and the wheel route was the only bad play. Put Nix, Joseph, and Cushing in the lineup, the defense will dominate.

He was also shit on pass coverage and taking himself out of the play by overrunning it...to be fair though, it's first pre season game. Once he develops a swim/spin move and plays better coverage, he'll be a stout defender.

I like the move, and would love to see him succeed tbh. He's already better than the starter--can't ask for a better situation to walk into imo. The team is stacked with talent on both sides, and he'll have no pressure being the b/u and all. Also, with all his years sitting, it won't take more than 8 games to find out if he's a legit starter or not.

Not terribly excited but not down in the dumps about it either. Texans lose a 7th round conditional pick in 2016 for a guy drafted in the 3rd round that spent the better part of 3 years under the tutelage of BB/Brady. What all this really means is, Keenum's days as a Texan are over and butt-chin O'Brien gets a backup QB who is neither worse or better than the starter.

DUNCANownsKOBE
08-31-2014, 04:49 PM
I've never understood that "insurance policy" argument. If Brady went down at any time in the last 3 years, the Patriots would have had no shot at a superbowl, whether it was Ryan Mallett or Avante at QB.

They also had Brian Hoyer before they drafted Mallett.

Well yeah if it's season ending, you could say that for any team and backup qb's would be worthless. But if you need a guy to step in and go 2-2 in a stretch and hold the fort, it's better to have a guy you've trained than to pick up some random FA veteran

DUNCANownsKOBE
08-31-2014, 05:01 PM
I think Brian Hoyer was more than capable of going 2-2.

Certainly the difference between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett for a 3 year period wasn't worth a 3rd round pick.

Insurance policies are for teams with mediocre to good starting QB's with stout defenses and good special teams. Teams with elite QB's don't have the luxury of adding a back up as an insurance policy because no back up QB can live up to an elite QB's play/leadership skill.

Mallet is terrible. About as chimp brain as you can get for a QB.

He was overrated in college. Fact is, Arkansas became much better once Tyler Wilson became the QB and he couldn't last in this league.

Mallet always has sucked in the preseason and I'm not convinced he will be a better backup than Keenum. He's certainly not better than Fitzpatrick.

Keenum has a little bit of play making ability on the run but you put him in the pocket and he has two glaring, damning deficiencies...he can feel the pass rush coming and he can't read a defense. He's the prototypical spread QB that never really learned how to play the position correctly in college.

J.J. Watt

https://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/wattsack.gif

I hope you enjoyed your nine-month break.

Six days after signing a $100 million deal (with about $51 million guaranteed) that made Watt the richest defensive player ever, he again showed why he’s on his way to maybe being the best defensive player ever. Houston paid Watt like a quarterback because he affects games like a quarterback. In the Texans’ 17-6 win on Sunday, Watt had a sack, would have had another but drew an intentional grounding flag instead, blocked an extra point, recovered a fumble, and spent the afternoon making Robert Griffin–size cartoon imprints in the turf. Depending on the source, Watt hit Griffin five, six, or seven times. It doesn’t really matter. Griffin spent the entire game running for his life.

We don’t get players like Watt very often. I already regret not picking him for defensive player of the year. I guarantee you he knows — not because he reads or listens. He just knows.

Wait, isn't that the WORSE of the two meniscus outcomes? Usually surgery is a quick fix that ends up having long-term effects, while rest takes longer to start but provides a better healing job. For someone as young and important as Clowney, I wouldn't have even considered surgery, just like the Spurs didn't when Duncan had his meniscus issue in 2000.

The first link talks about how meniscus injuries are usually addressed. The second link suggests that a 4-6 week recovery means they removed part of it instead of repairing it. That's actually pretty concerning.

Yeah...I was speaking from a recovery standpoint for this season and not long term. No one except the doctors know the severity of the tear and how much they had to remove. The hope is they carefully weighed out the pros and cons of both and that they didn't feel the tear was that bad, so they went with the removal thinking he wouldn't have lingering effects.

This team is a shitty as it was last year...had it not been for the Redskins turning the ball over in the red zone and the Raiders starting a rookie Qb and sucking so bad this team would be 0-3

i wouldn't panic too much tbh, of course play offs are pointless at this point, but there is plenty to like about this team for the future.

If you're counting on Foster to be healthy in order for the team to look better, then good luck to that...guy is always hurt. As for Clowney, for all his freakish athleticism his body seems to be made out of shit. Already 3 set backs this year, his rookie year and after one game!

Watt is a one man wrecking crew. Hopefully Clowney can get healthy soon...its just a matter of time before teams consider triple teaming Watt

My thoughts so far:

That offense suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks dick.

JJ Watt has a penis the size of a tree trunk. He's that much of a man.

This D may be scary good if Clowney quits getting hurt.

I like O'Brien.

Sup breh. The offense won't be shit until they find a real QB. I think the play calling has been what it has been to keep Fitz from failing. I don't think I'd call that a plan for success though. I think they are monitoring Savage's progress closely. Kid has a huge arm, just needs to put it together mentally.

Clowney had an interview yesterday that said he was running and would be back "in a few weeks." I fine with them taking their time. I'd like to see him play before the bye though.

50/50. It seems like either team can have a Jekyll/Hyde moment at any time. If Houston can contain the run and make Romo throw they have a chance. Let Murray go off and they are fucked.

The line needs to run block better. And Foster needs to stop getting hurt. Also they can't be running him into the ground either. They are going to have to throw the ball.

Im intrigued by this matchup. Elite o-line vs elite d-line with the best defensive player in football. I know Watt is gonna cause us some trouble. Gotta just remember to keep pounding the run. Lanes will open.

Been meaning to post this for a while. If any folks haven't seen Fitzpatrick's pre-game speech last week, here's a link:

That version is funny because they edited out all the cuss words. Pretty decent job if you aren't watching the video.

If Baltimore and San Diego lose next week, you can log off for a while. They are playing a meaningful game in week 17 with no QB all year, zero contribution from Clowney or any of their draft picks.

Keep the faith brother. It's the NFL, and teams choke a lot in the final two weeks.

If if's and but's were candy and nuts....anyway I'm not a hater, but let's be real here. They're too many things out of their control for them to have a realistic chance at the playoffs. Hey, you said it best no qb, injuries, poor draft, etc....that's a lot to overcome; and yet they're still playing a meaningful game in the last game of the season. So, let's not get our hopes up and just be glad they were able to persevere and had a good season.
