Spurs are now up 3-1, but they haven't won shit yet. Thing is, they know this. After last year's heartbreak, they're not going to let it slip away this time.

After their performance in the last two games, I will be VERY surprised if the Spurs don't close it out at home in Game 5.

Miami coming back from down 3 games to 1 to win the Finals this year would be a trillion times worse than 6, and the Spurs know this, too.

NO MERCY!!! BURY THE FUCKING HEAT!!!

Nice mate, I'll be "busy in meetings" I've arranged on Monday...

I'm a school teacher, that was me today. My poor kids done so many tests, while I'm watching games on my laptop it's not funny. But I'm not 100% I'll be able to manage my emotions in front of a class of 25 15yr old Heat, Laker & Clipper Fans.

Last year I watched game 6 at lunch time with about 50 students all but 1 Heat fans... The tears were welling up with 25 seconds to go, and I was hugging the only other Spurs fan in the room when suddenly I realised the game was streaming about 70 secs slow and kids were reacting to the scores on their phones.... I pulled the cord and told them all to get outside! :lol

Pop has done something miraculous with the 2014 Spurs, especially in the playoffs.
Sure we saw a lot of passing and ball movement during the regular season, when the second unit was playing and Tony was resting, but in the playoffs, particularly the Finals, Pop has emphasized sharing the ball and passing it to get a good shot. Remember after Game 2, Pop said that the ball was sticking and that they needed to move the ball or die. I think that was a message to Tony to move the ball more, like the bench does. The way the Spurs are playing right now, with great ball movement a lot of the time, the older players like Duncan and Ginobili can play several more years since the younger players----Parker, Leonard, Green, Mills, etc. can share the load at a fast pace. Under such a scenario, Tony would have to make an adjustment in his style of play, but in the long run, the Spurs might be able to get 1 or 2 more rings. I love the way the Spurs are playing right now.

Tim already knows what he's going to do and if I had to guess is that he'd walk away but winning on Sunday might give him something to chase, #6 and go in full force next season till the wheels fall off. Spurs might have already talked to him and said, "hey we need flexibility for next season, let's restructure that last year deal.

blowing leads in a game, ncaa style isn't crazier than blowing a 3-1 series lead.

No, it's much more difficult to make that comeback Miami did last year(down 2-3 + what happened in game 6) than just to win 3 games, game by game... Last year situation was more to have it in our hands than the current situation... Peapole have to stop acting like it's over...

I knew wade had some physical problems, but wow! That looks like 4 on 5 out there a lot of the time. The Spurs know the only thing wade can do defensively now is play with his hands and try and slap the ball out as a dribbler blows past him. His knees and legs are shot right now.

There is a reason why the Heat are fortunate to even be in a game 5 at this point. Wade looks like a mess physically right now.

The Heat cannot be sound defensively if Wade is doing what I see on that video the rest of this series.

I wonder if he is getting his knee drained today. Or taking a heavy cycle of steroids or HGH. It still is likely not enough to stop is what going to happen.

Yup...the Heat will hurl themselves into the fucking abyss to not lose Game 5. The Spurs just have to build a good lead like in the last two games and weather the inevitable storm in the second half.

A double-digit lead also takes the refs out of the equation.

The Spurs ARE better than Miami. The Spurs had to play in the West and still finished with the best record in the NBA, 62-20, which is 8 games better than the 54-28 Heat, who played in the much less competitive East. None of the East teams besides Indiana and Miami would have made the playoffs in the West. This disparity is rearing its ugly head for Miami now. TBQH, the Spurs were a few missed free throws away from SWEEPING Miami this year. The Heat have no answer for Diaw...NONE. It's over. Spurs in 5. BOOK IT.

BTW, I can't wait for the 2014 Championship DVD!

Spurs need to finish them off, if Miami wins that gives them hope, life. Things can turn around quickly, lose game 5 and 6 and than you have to play a game 7 vs the Heat. This Heat team has made the Finals 4 straight seasons, I don't think they are the better team this year, the Spurs are but they need to show it. If you can blow them out in their own gym in games 3 and 4, there is no excuse to not seal the deal in game 5. The Spurs are going to have to dominate them to win the NBA title, get it done quit gifting Miami championships, close it out when you have the chance. Go Spurs Go!

random thought about game 4: that first quarter seemed cold, clinical, detached, automatic, like I have never seen from a spurs team. Spurs success has always depended on the collective confidence in the jumper: they go on runs and life is good when the 3 is falling, or the team collectively goes cold and no one can make anything... Game 4 was the first game I remember where this did not apply at all. it was just step 1, step 2, step 3, shoot, step 1, step 2, step 3, rebound...

and I looked up, and could not believe what I saw on the scoreboard.

It's the Role Players Who Have the Spurs Rolling

Tony Parker is still thankful for the role players who helped carry San Antonio to its last NBA title in 2007.

There was Robert Horry, a seven-time champion and official finals good-luck charm if there ever was one. Michael Finley, who was hitting 3-pointers at a much better rate in those playoffs than he did in the regular season that year. Fabricio Oberto, who probably never had a play called for him but found ways to get things done.

The Spurs had a 'Big 3' then, the same one that they have now.

But three is rarely enough, and that's been proven once again in these NBA Finals.

Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw have been exactly what San Antonio needed in this matchup against the Miami Heat, and might be the two biggest reasons why the Spurs are one win away from their fifth NBA championship. The Spurs lead these finals 3-1, and will look to end Miami's reign in Game 5 at home on Sunday night.

"If you want to win championships, obviously you need a 'Big 3,'" Parker said. "But you need your role players to play great too. And every time we won championships in the past, the 'Big 3,' we played great, but we had great role players. ... If you want to go all the way, you need the whole team to play great."

That's what the Spurs are getting.

Parker is leading the Spurs in scoring, Tim Duncan is leading in rebounding and the Western Conference champions are outscoring Miami by 62 points so far with Manu Ginobili on the floor — so yes, the 'Big 3' is doing its part.

But when the Spurs took control of the series by winning Games 3 and 4 in Miami, Leonard led the charge by averaging 24.5 points on 68 percent shooting. And Diaw has 23 assists so far in the series, more than anyone else and none probably better than his behind-the-back offering out of the post that set Tiago Splitter up for a dunk in Game 4.

There's already talk that Leonard could be in line to win MVP of the finals. In an absolutely not-shocking development, he wanted no part of that talk.

"It feels the same for me as any game going into it," Leonard said of the anticipation level for Game 5. "All I'm thinking about is playing. I'm not worried about what if we win or lose, and we just want to go out and play."

Such is the Spurs' way.

The makeup of a player who perfectly fits into the San Antonio system has remained unchanged for the better part of two decades. He values team play over any individual accolade. He never says too much, particularly about himself. He stays in the moment, avoiding the urge to look ahead or behind.

Leonard and Diaw meet all those characteristics.

"San Antonio is playing great," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They're moving the basketball. They're exploiting where we're normally good, so we have to do a better job. Even when we've made adjustments, they've still been able to stay in a rhythm and a flow."

It's hard to remember now that Diaw couldn't get minutes with the 2011-12 Charlotte Bobcats — a team that finished with the worst record in NBA history — in part because then-coach Paul Silas was frustrated with Diaw's penchant for passing the ball instead of taking shots at times.

(http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2014/06/14/sports/basketball/ap-bkn-nba-finals-spurs.html?partner=rss&emc=rss#story-continues-2)So the Bobcats waived him late that season. The Spurs picked him up and in Game 4 of these finals, Diaw had more assists (nine) than shots (six).

Go figure.

"He really has a high basketball IQ," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Diaw. "I think he raises the level for everyone. At the defensive end, he's pretty heady, not the quickest guy in the world, but really smart. Does his work early and understands what's going on. At the offensive end, he can score inside and out, and he passes the ball really well. He's a consummate team sort of guy."
Diaw is just the third player to have a game with at least nine rebounds and nine assists during these playoffs, with Oklahoma City stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook being the others.

For his part, Diaw said he's never cared about scoring. If the team scores, that's good enough for him.

"It's just moving the ball, playing with everybody," Diaw said. "There is nobody really just watching. Everybody's involved, and everybody gets the ball at some point. So it's been good."
Good, indeed.

One more win, and these Spurs officially become great.

LeBron With a Simple Message: 'Why Not Us?'

SAN ANTONIO — Early Sunday evening, LeBron James will gather his Miami Heat teammates around him and offer a few final words of wisdom before they try to extend their reign as NBA champions.

James never rehearses the speech, but already knows what the gist will be.

"It would be in the range of, 'Why not us?'" James said Saturday. "Why not us? History is broken all the time. And obviously we know we're against the greatest of odds."

Against the greatest of odds, against maybe the greatest of San Antonio Spurs teams, too. Both are very much against the Heat now, and both are winning. The Spurs are a victory away from their fifth championship, and will go for it at home Sunday night in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

The Spurs are the 32nd team in NBA history to hold a 3-1 lead in the finals. All 31 of the previous teams have won the title.

"History is made to be broken, and why not me be a part of it? That would be great," James said. "That would be a great story line, right? But we'll see what happens. I've got to live in the moment, though, before we even get to that point."

The Spurs have the same way of thinking.

They took command of the finals in stunning fashion by not just winning in Miami, but winning twice — and winning big. San Antonio won Games 3 and 4 on the road by a combined 40 points, never trailing by more than two in either contest and running out to 25-point leads in each.

"We've got to act like we're coming into it like it's a road game," Spurs guard Danny Green said. "It's a mentality thing. We have to come up with the same mentality we do on the road and try to protect home court and play with desperation."

There was no talk from the Spurs on Saturday about closing in on a title, or anything remotely close to that topic. They thought they had it wrapped up with 28 seconds left in Game 6 last season against Miami and saw it slip away — so even with a 3-1 lead and being at home instead the road for this potential clinching situation, it's pretty clear that San Antonio isn't willing to leave anything to chance.

"They're going to come out and give us their best punch possible," Spurs star Tim Duncan said. "We know that they're back-to-back champs and they've been in this situation before and they have all the confidence in the world that they can win these games. So we have to do just the same. Come out there and say, hey, we're going to take it little by little, quarter by quarter, and see what happens."

That all sounds good, and he meant every word.

Thing is, the Heat — these Heat, anyway — haven't been in this situation before. Since James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh teamed up, the Heat have never trailed 3-1 in a series.

Until now.

"We're not so entitled or jaded that we're above having to fight for it, and that's what it is right now," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It's competition. So we've got to find a way to fight and get this next game, and that's what it's all about."

Miami took a day off Friday. Mario Chalmers played with his son, James watched some film and rested at home, Udonis Haslem tried to relax with family. Wade, who missed nine of his first 10 shots — raising questions about his health — went a different way.

He went into the gym, by himself, looking for answers.

"I have very good reason that everything could change," Wade said. "As I continue to say throughout the season, it's a game-to-game thing."

Wade was down 2-0 in the 2006 finals, and trailed by 13 points in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of that series against Dallas. The Heat won that championship in six games.

"You have to pull from your experiences," Wade said, "and know where you came from to know where you're trying to go."

That also applies to the Spurs.

Losing the last two games of the finals last year still stings San Antonio. That series was portrayed widely as the Spurs' last hurrah — an aging team with old stars, there's no way they could come back from something as devastating as letting the 2013 championship slip away, right?

Wrong.

The Spurs finished with the best record in the regular season, and are one win shy of just being the best team, period.

"Whatever success anyone has is due to a lot of factors," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Some of it is not even your doing. Sometimes things just happen. So success is a pretty complicated thing."

So are comebacks.

But James is eager for the chance.

"For me, it's like you either don't make the playoffs or you win a championship," James said. "There's no in-between."

O trust me im not celebrating until the clock hits zero. Ive been waiting about 7 years for this. I was a freshman in high school last time they won, im now graduated college. Its like a lifetime ago and back then it didnt hit me as hard as it will if they win it in 2014.

I have been waiting since I left Sacramento and now live in Phoenix with the Suns fans. The Spurs know what they gotta do. Finish them off quickly and hopefully the riverboats will be gassed up by this time tomorrow.

The second half was almost a glorified garbage time - when LBJ scored most of his points anyway.

Lebron also stated today is foot is getting worse as the games wear on right now. He apparently hurt it in game two......

Ironic.

LeBron is not right physically. I saw it when he went up for a breakaway dunk and just dropped the ball in.

He has a sprained ankle since game 1, thats according to Ira Winderman. Lebron hasnt said much about it. Wade looks injured to. The Spurs will close it out tomorrow night, I believe it.

Look I thought the Spurs were done after 2010, it just seemed over. At the time it looked dead because the Lakers were coming off beating the Celtics and looked unstoppable, then Lebron decided he was going Miami. At that point it was just like damn, how the hell will the Spurs ever get through both LA and Miami while we are declining? I didnt think they were going to win another title, then in 2012 we saw a rebirth, and now here we are in 2014. Its simply amazing, just 1 win and it will go from being 8 years of dominance to 15 years of dominance.

Im thinking and hoping the Spurs will be culminating their 7 year journey to attain another World Championship on Sunday. I saw Lebrons press conference today and he said "Its just basketball." If im a Heat fan that is a sign for concern. Your leader cant just dismiss this as something that is just basketball like we would play on any other day. This is your career validation, and since hes getting curbstomped he just acts like its nothing. Fuck this guy, really. Hes so afraid of public perception, he spins stories to make people believe the NBA Finals is insignificant compared to family. Well, ok thanks Lebron but im not falling for that. Own up and promise to play better.

Im a fan of Lebrons and would like him to achieve greatness but definitely not at the expense of our Spurs. Spurs got this. No fucking way this team or the city of San Antonio let this opportunity slip thru their hands. Im not really sure what to expect from the Heat. Lebron sounds like hes conceding and they look like they are literally breaking down before our eyes. I said this about Lebron in Game 1 as well. Body shots and left hooks will be thrown hard from Miami. Its just a matter of time till they break down. The Spurs are way too deep and way too hungry. If the Spurs lose this game........fuck that.

Spurs win 111-76.

Spurs’ Mastery Putting LeBron, Heat To Shame

To call this a clinic is to devalue the immensity of the masterpiece. How do we deify the Spurs with the right words today? Answer: Describe their performance as an art form, an extravaganza rarely seen even on a championship level. All it took was Gregg Popovich to utter six words after their only sluggish game of an epic week — “You move it or you die’’ — for the Spurs to propel their long-sustainable system of selfless, expertly efficient basketball to new heights in the NBA Finals.

When was the last time we saw a team operate with such wondrous, mesmerizing precision? When was the last time you said “Wow!’’ or “Damn!’’ dozens of times about the same team on a June night? Normally, the Finals have some semblance of two-way competitiveness, but the Spurs have been so spectacular the last two games, they’ve reduced LeBron James to an afterthought and the rest of the Heat, including the suddenly useless Dwyane Wade, to bit players.

Yes, the Heat are playing like demoralized dogs who lack heart and desire and are diminshing the legacy of James, who kept holding his midsection throughout a lackluster Game 4.

A second straight Finals blowout at home, this time to a 107-86 tune, must have made him sick to his stomach. There were times during this debacle that the Spurs, with no-look bounce passes and breathtaking ball movement, looked like the Harlem Globetrotters, which reduced LeBron and the Heat to the Washington Generals.

What you’re hearing, people, is the ceremonial opening of one door and the disgusted shutting of another. The Spurs, a special if nationally underappreciated empire since Popovich and Tim Duncan started making sweet titles together 15 years ago, are about to enter the pantheon of America’s all-time glorious sports teams. Unless they become the first ever to blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals — their predecessors with that advantage are 31-0 — they will back up Duncan’s Swaggy T prediction of revenge over the Heat after last year’s Finals collapse. And unless James and his big-mouth entourage — didn’t I say the Carmelo Anthony-to-the-Heat whispers, which came straight from LeBron’s camp, would have a distracting effect? — sign the Eastern Conference All-Stars to join James before Game 5, this series will be over Sunday night in Texas.

Five titles in 15 years shouldn’t happen in the age of opt-outs and luxury taxes. But it’s happening for the Spurs and their crusty coach, Popovich, who thrives on a 21st-century sideline with military-school methods of discipline, ego compromise and team cohesion. “”I’m pleased that they performed as well as they did while we’ve been in Miami, and that’s about as far it goes,” Popovich grunted afterward. “Now, we’ve got to go back home and play as well or better.”

And what was that James said a while ago about “not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven’’ championships?

If the Heat are closed out, he’ll be 2-3 in the Finals, and while the current collapse is more about weak links being exposed and embarrassed by the optimum-performing, 10-deep San Antonio lineup, all future attempts to compare him to Michael Jordan will cease. As in Game 3, we kept waiting for James to assume control with his teammates looking awful, which is what basketball greats do if they aspire to be on the sport’s Mt. Rushmore — his stated goal. Put it this way: If anyone was starting to chisel his likeness on a mountainside, he went home for the summer.

James has 15 assists and 18 turnovers in four games. Last year, in a seven-game triumph for the Heat, he had 49 assists and 18 turnovers. Do not make the mistake of letting him off the hook. Since quieting the social media in Game 2, LeBron has been ordinary and, at times, almost resigned that he can’t win this series.

“They smashed us,” James said. “Two straight home games, got off to awful starts. They came in and were much better than us in these last two games. It’s just that simple. They’re a high-oiled machine, and they move the ball extremely well. They put you in so many difficult positions. If you’re not right on time, right on target, they’re going to make you pay for it.”

Now LeBron suggests the Heat will win the final three games. “We put ourselves in a position where it is about making history,” he said. Really?

Has he noticed the Spurs are fashioning one of the great postseason runs ever, having won 11 games by 15 or more points?

Does he realize the Spurs are shooting almost 55 percent, the highest field-goal percentage for a Finals team through four games since the shot clock was implemented in 1954?

Does he realize the Spurs have put together entire quarters in which they rarely miss a shot?

Has he noticed that Kawhi Leonard — tell me Mark Jackson didn’t say on the ABC telecast, “Who? What? When? Where? And Kawhi?’’ — followed his Game 3 breakout by filling out the stat line with 20 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, three steals and more athletic-lockdown defense on James and other Heat players?

Did he see Boris Diaw come close to a triple-double?

Did he notice Tony Parker and Patty Mills again shame Mario Chalmers?

How Danny Green doesn’t miss a shot anymore?

And did he see the Little Two, Wade and Chris Bosh, shoot a combined 8 of 24 from the field?

Did LeBron hear the boos reign down on the two-time champions in a town spoiled by success but also disturbed right now by an alarming lack of effort?

“They played great and I can honestly say I don’t think any of us were expecting this type of performance,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “They were great. You have to give them credit for that. We just couldn’t get into a rhythm on either side of the ball, and it went from there.”

Didn’t expect it? Might another coach have been better prepared? Spoelstra’s players seem more like impressed spectators than serious challengers.

“They put you in positions that no other team in this league does,” James said.

“It’s tough because you have to cover the ball first, but also those guys on the weak side can do multiple things. They can shoot the ball from outside, they can also penetrate. So our defense is geared toward running guys off the 3-point line, but at the same time those guys are getting full steam ahead and getting to the rim too.”
“They’re just one of those teams,’’ Bosh said, “where if you make mistakes, especially early, they’re going to capitalize very quickly.

They’re doing a very good job of starting fast. Not only starting fast, but they’re hitting their shots and getting to the basket, getting to the free throw line. They’re pretty much getting everything they want.”

Maybe the James camp leaked the Anthony conjecture to plant a seed: LeBron needs help, because the teammates around him are fading fast.

You know will see two days of stories linking him — he can opt out of his contract in three weeks — to the Knicks, Lakers and Cavaliers. And you will keep hearing about Anthony. With billions of dollars swirling in a 21st-century sports blizzard, the art of the deal too often takes precedence over the bouncing balls. Yet never have we seen business interrupt a championship series quite like the buzz in Miami before Game 4.

The Heat should have been concentrating on nothing but how to stop a Spurs team that is healthier, deeper, hungrier and better than a year ago.

I have the same feeling. But I would soooooooo love to be wrong. And I hope you are wrong too.

I fear that folks are counting out the Heat just as people were counting out the Spurs after game 2 of this series and game 4 of the WCF. There always seems to be a tendency to go beyond what the facts are to what we WANT them to be.

I hope so much that the Spurs can repeat the performances of the last two games, but we have to remember that the Heat have had an extra day off, which is more important to them than to our team at this point, I think. And they are still proud.

I would love to think that we could humble them again tonight and for the rest of the off-season.

Just as in the first game, the Heat will come out in the passing lanes, trapping, and fouling. If they get called for the fouls, Spurs win. If they don't, our players can get hurt.

James will be going to the rim every possession for the first ten possessions, imo, and if Spurs get called for fouling him, they could get taken out of any sort of offensive rhythm and be in trouble.

I also expect Udonis Haslem to start and be very physical against Tim. Boris will once again be the key, imo., one way or the other.

I think Miami will fight for about a quarter and a half. Then the Spurs group of ten will squeeze the life out of them like an anaconda. The SAS have been waiting a year for this moment.

Manu, Tim, and Tony in particular will not allow this opportunity to be wasted. I'm not sure what Miami can really exploit. The Spurs had to kind of gift game 2 to them when they were still feeling out the Heat.

This will be a 10-15 point margin for the Spurs tonight.

If Kawhi gets in early foul trouble, I think game 5 will go down to the wire as LBJ goes off for 30+ and a couple of their role players turn up. If not, I think we beat them handily. The Spurs were the better tema last year although the record books don't reflect that, and they're clearly superior in all aspects this year. Time to crush the Heat in 5.

Here we are.

It’s taken 360 days and 5,328 basketball minutes. It’s taken an offseason of regret fueled into a new season of determination. It’s taken award-winning play and coaching and management. It’s taken a perilous postseason run against bitter rivals and rising powers and former demons. It’s taken two of the most amazing Finals games that will ever be played back-to-back. And now…here we are.

One win away.

After an incredible shooting display stunned the Heat in Game 3 of the 2014 NBA Finals, the Spurs pulled off the improbable by playing a Game 4 that was arguably more dominating and impressive. You can’t expect the Spurs to come out and shoot 19-for-21 or 25-for-33 in a half like they did in Game 3. Like Coach Pop said himself, “I don’t think we’ll shoot 76% in a half..ever..again” What you can expect, however, is Spurs basketball: motion, spacing, ball movement, and most importantly, defense. In Game 4, the Spurs were once again the clinicians, and these were the concepts they were teaching.

The Heat are now in a hole that no NBA team has ever climbed out of. They went into Game 4 calling it their Game 7, and they were absolutely demoralized on their home floor. Now they have to survive three more Game 7s if they hope to three-peat, and it’s easy to question their ability to do so after the absolute ass-whoopings they’ve just received.

Now is not the time to be satisfied, though. Now is not the time for assumptions. As dominating as this 3-1 series lead feels, remember this: The Spurs were actually closer to a title last year than they are this year. And they still don’t have it.

San Antonio was mere inches away from the gold last season. They could see it from the goddamn bench. It was so close they could probably taste it. And it all got ripped away.

Now the Spurs need to win one more whole game again, and don’t count these Heat out. They are the one team in the league capable of flipping the switch and suddenly becoming gangbusters, and you know the NBA wouldn’t mind helping them along the way if it means another blockbuster Game 7. The Spurs must maintain their focus and be prepared for this to be a battle to the death.

Fortunately, I take comfort in this one fact: if there is one person in this world who really truly understands this…it’s Tim Duncan.

Here we are again.

Go get it, Timmy.

Fortunately, I take comfort in this one fact: if there is one person in this world who really truly understands this…it’s Tim Duncan.

Here we are again.

Go get it, Timmy.

Woke up this morning thinking, "Fuck, we can win the NBA Championship TODAY"! Not getting too carried away, but can't remember being this excited for quite some time.

Dex with the goods too, as usual. Wish we had more posters like him.
