dude brought in his home made clock to show to his engineering teacher and he was arrested because they thought he had brought a bomb. bigotry at its finest. smh.
edit: looks like his engineering teacher knew it was a clock it was his sloot english teacher who thought it was a bomb, "He kept the clock inside his school bag in English class, but the teacher complained when the alarm beeped in the middle of a lesson. Ahmed brought his invention up to show her afterward.
“She was like, it looks like a bomb,” he said.
“I told her, ‘It doesn’t look like a bomb to me.’”
The teacher kept the clock. When the principal and a police officer pulled Ahmed out of sixth period, he suspected he wouldn’t get it back.
They led Ahmed into a room where four other police officers waited. He said an officer he’d never seen before leaned back in his chair and remarked: “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”

Muslims have brought it all on themselves, they have shown to be a primitive thinking bunch where violence plays a major role in their religion.
No problem with this.

This is shameful, even for Texas. First of all, it's a goddamn circuit board. Your cellphone is more useful and convenient if you want to create an improvised bomb. The principal and the cops are utter morons who couldn't tell their ass from their elbow.
And you could forgive them for being idiots, but they had to be bigoted idiots as well. If they were genuinely afraid that it was a bomb, they should have evacuated the school and called a bomb squad to examine the device. All they did was put on a show of cuffing the kid, walking him to juvenile detention and interrogating him in a hostile manner to get him to"confess". Even when they realised that it was a harmless clock, they considered charging him with bringing a "hoax bomb". The kid says it's a clock (which it turns out to be), these imbeciles create the "hoax" that it might be a bomb and then accuse the kid of pulling the hoax. You couldn't make up this stuff.

What does that laughable scenario have anything to do with:
1. Police wrongfully arresting a 14 year old on a hoax charge that they invented, and interrogating him without contacting his legal guardian
2. The school suspending the child even after they found out that it was a harmless clock

Muslims have brought it all on themselves, they have shown to be a primitive thinking bunch where violence plays a major role in their religion.
No problem with this.
It has a bit less to do with that, than with general hysteria surrounding school security these days.

If you asked me to make a list of top public concerns about Irving ISD, indoctrinating its students into Islam wouldn’t be on it. This is a school board whose chambers are currently festooned with wreaths and jingle bells, and which kicked off its last meeting with a prayer “in Jesus’ name.”
And yet at yesterday afternoon’s work session, the first item after that opening prayer was a half-hour report on whether Irving’s curriculum is too pro-Islam.......

Well, yeah, it's obvious upon inspection. But which rando is going to scrutinize it enough? The attitude you quoted from Chump is the same attitude people in horror movies have. Now, the proper course of action should have been to evacuate the wing if you thought it was a bomb, so I don't know what happened there.
But here's what CNN had in their latest article:
Ahmed has said he brought the device to school to impress his teachers, but one became concerned about the device and reported him to the principal.Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said authorities were able to determine quickly that it wasn't a bomb, but they investigated Ahmed to determine whether he brought the device to school with the intention of creating alarm. It is against Texas law to use or possess a fake bomb with the intent to make someone believe that it is an explosive.
Ahmed told investigators it was a clock, but he was led away in handcuffs after he wouldn't say much more on the matter, Boyd said. Further investigation revealed details -- such as his making the clock to impress teachers -- that led police to decide not to pursue charges, Boyd said.
I don't know what Ahmed was thinking, but it wasn't the right course of action of deescalate matters. On one hand, the police should have given him his rights if they were going to arrest him. On the other hand, the kid didn't seem to explain himself. So yeah, the police were definitely stupid for arresting him, but the kid doesn't seem too different from people in those police killings. Perhaps he was thinking lawsuit the whole time or perhaps his father's antics had conditioned him to politicize things.
The police should be embarrassed over this, but that kid has gotten too much support as well. People are stupid. The Twitter age was supposed to make us more informed. But instead, it just lets us swallow the same bullshit as before. It's just we get it while it's still warm.

To be clear, they arrested him, carted him out of school in front of his classmates in handcuffs, took him to jail, processed him, detained him, didn't immediately notify his parents of his arrest and interrogated him without his parents or his lawyer present. I think what's most disturbing is the allegation that they denied his multiple requests to speak to his parents.
I don't blame the child for clamming up. The kid comes to school with a STEM project that he's proud of the next thing he knows he's surrounded by four police officers accusing him of being a bomb-maker and refusing his right to speak with his legal guardians—meanwhile he's continually telling them it's just a clock. If anything, they should have contacted his parents sooner and allowed them to be present during the interrogation instead of skirting the kid's rights. They probably could have come to their inevitable conclusions that it's not a bomb and that it was not designed to scare anybody much sooner, and saved themselves from the eventual civil rights lawsuit.

Taking him to juvenile detention and not allowing him to contact his legal guardian when he asked to do so is a violation of the Texas Family Code. The kid's parents will sue and the Texas taxpayer will pay enough to see this kid through college and more.

He didn't go the jail. I'm not even sure he was "processed". Anyway, you won't find me saying he was treated fairly at all. As far as I know, the police violated pretty ingrained legal rights, and they'll pay for that.
They probably could have come to their inevitable conclusions that it's not a bomb and that it was not designed to scare anybody much sooner, and saved themselves from the eventual civil rights lawsuit.
He should have just said nothing at all if he wasn't going to actually explain what happened, which is the word so far. I don't blame him for going all legal, but repeatedly saying "It's a clock" is not helpful. Saying, "It's a clock I made for this one class. Ask that teacher and they'll vouch for me," is helpful. The kid doesn't have to do the police's job for them, I understand. But to act like the police should have let him go simply because he repeated "It's a clock," makes no sense. Again, though, since I feel like this is going to get missed, the police violated this kid's rights, and they are going to end up poorer and embarrassed for their shoddy work.
Taking him to juvenile detention and not allowing him to contact his legal guardian when he asked to do so is a violation of the Texas Family Code. The kid's parents will sue and the Texas taxpayer will pay enough to see this kid through college and more.
I agree.
Anyway, we're talking about different things here. The kid was in the legal right by clamming up, and the police were in the wrong. But that doesn't make the kid smart. As I said, it's like with the police shootings that have happened recently. Parents need to teach their kids to be cooperative and non-confrontational with police officers. If one of those police officers had hauled off and shot the kid between the eyes in a fit of insanity, that department would have been up shit creek, it would be a year's worth of coverage, tons of protests and all that. But the kid would be dead, and no amount of hashtags would bring him back. The kid's father has probably made him very used to political controversy, but the time to be a hero is not during the arrest; it's afterwards.
If you're surrounded by police officers and can defuse the situation with a quick explanation, you do so. You don't go around saying, "It's a clock" over and over again like the police are the biggest idiots on the planet -- even when they are -- and get yourself hauled off to juvie. That's just stupid.

Media narrative getting destroyed once again, this time by an actual engineer:
So there you have it folks, Ahmed Mohamad did not invent, nor build a clock. He took apart an existing clock, and transplanted the guts into a pencil box, and claimed it was his own creation. It all seems really fishy to me.
I refer back again to this YouTube video interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mW4w0Y1OXE) with Ahmed. He explains that he closed up the box with a piece of cord because he didn’t want it to look suspicious. I’m curious, why would "looking suspicious" have even crossed his mind before this whole event unfolded, if he was truly showing off a hobby project, something so innocuous as an alarm clock.
If we stop and think – was it really such a ridiculous reaction from the teacher and the police in the first place? How many school shootings and incidents of violence have we had, where we hear afterwards "this could have been prevented, if only we paid more attention to the signs!" Teachers are taught to be suspicious and vigilant. Ahmed wasn’t accused of making a bomb – he was accused of making a look-alike, a hoax. And be honest with yourself, a big red digital display with a bunch of loose wires in a brief-case looking box is awful like a Hollywood-style representation of a bomb. Everyone jumped to play the race and religion cards and try and paint the teachers and police as idiots and bigots, but in my mind, they were probably acting responsibly and erring on the side of caution to protect the rest of their students, just in case. "This wouldn’t have happened if Ahmed were white," they say. We’re supposed to be sensitive to school violence, but apparently religious and racial sensitivity trumps that. At least we have another clue about how the sensitivity and moral outrage pecking order lies.

How many school shootings and incidents of violence have we had, where we hear afterwards "this could have been prevented, if only we paid more attention to the signs!" Teachers are taught to be suspicious and vigilant.
Say, God forbid, a bomb does go off at a school filled with children. Then days later a surviving teacher says, "Well I saw a kid with a briefcase filled with wires...and it looked a little suspicious."
The public would be asking, "Why didn't you say anything?". I guess his/her answer would be, "He looked Muslim and I don't want to lose my job."
Even the Muslim groups understand why the kid was handcuffed. Actually, they find no problem with what the teachers and police did. They only have a problem with the kid being questioned without a lawyer or parent present.....

Earlier in the thread from Blake:
It's my perception/opinion at this point that this arrest was based on Bible belt Islamophobia because it's in the Bible belt and this kid has a name that allegedly made the cops say "of course it was him".
There is probably some liberal logic in all of this he can explain to me.

Personally, I think his father came up with it as an excuse to shake down the school. He has a history of being an attention whore, apparently.
So if I follow you, this was the father's plan:
1. Give birth to a smart kid, get him interested in electronics
2. Make sure he tinkers around assembling his own devices over a few years to establish a reputation as a whiz kid of sorts
3. Get him to assemble a clock on a circuit board - arguably the most common item used in science lab
4. Have him take it to school, and show it to the engineering teacher on his own
5. Set the alarm to go off during English class, so that the English teacher investigates
6. Hope that the English teacher and principal are dumb enough to piss in their pants and call the police
7. Hope that the police are also dumb enough to not recognise a circuit board
8. Hope that nobody with basic science knowledge (e.g. the engineering teacher or someone in the PD who isn't ignorant of science) is brought in to the picture
9. Hope that the PD forgets Texas law regarding handling juveniles and goes overboard in their interrogation
10. Hope that this goes viral on social media
That "plan" left so many things to chance that it really wasn't much of a plan IMO.
The alternative explanation is that the kid wanted to show something he had done in 20 mins to his engineering teacher. Unfortunately some very ignorant people who've been fed a steady diet of paranoia by the media decided to overreact and make fools of themselves in the process.
Occam's razor - which scenario is more likely?

Everybody is missing the main point: they didn't actually treat the situation as a bomb threat, as they didn't call in a bomb squad, nor did they evacuate the school. Nobody believed anybody was in danger. People are saying everyone involved erred on side of caution, yet this caution kept the danger on a crowded school grounds with no specialists requested to disarm the danger.
So, how much danger did they really believe they were in?
Basically this argument paints the picture of just enough caution to embarrass/harass a 14-YO who never said it was a bomb, but not any actual caution to do anything to save lives had it been a bomb.

I'm still talking about the birther rumors, David. Those were first leaked by her PUMA PAC.
Investigations for my new book, Wingnuts (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0984295119/thedaibea-20/ref=as_at?tag=thedailybeast-autotag-20&linkCode=as2&), revealed that the Birther conspiracy theory was first concocted by renegade members of the original Obama haters, Party Unity My Ass, known more commonly by their acronym, the PUMAs. They were a splinter group of hard-core Hillary Clinton supporters who did not want to give up the ghost after the bitter 50-state Bataan Death March to the 2008 Democratic nomination. In the early summer of '08, message boards on sites like PUMAParty.com began lighting up with the ultimate reversal-of-fortune fantasy—that their party's nomination could be overturned on constitutional grounds. "Obama May Be Illegal to Be Elected President!" read one representative e-mail (http://pumaparty.com/vb/puma-talking-points-media-relations/18349-write-your-local-areas-newspapers-ask-if-obama-legal.html): "This came from a USNA [U.S. Naval Academy] alumnus. It'll be interesting to see how the media handle this...WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL newspaper editors etc. Keep this out there everyday possible. Also write to the DNC too!"

Gist is according to Cuban, the kid was uncooperative prior to the thing becoming an incident. No one thought it was a bomb, but teachers wanted him to put it away for hours, and he refused, which started making people nervous. That on its face is grounds for discipline. And it definitely takes credibility from the victimization angle. It comes off like I was saying it did: The kid was subverting authority for no reason and got into trouble for it. The police were wrong and will pay for it, but the kid's attitude is one we NEED to get out of people's heads.
It also adds a different spin on the "That's who I thought it was" comment, as it seems possible that this kid was just one of those douchebag guys with a superiority complex. He definitely doesn't deserve the praise he's getting.

He definitely doesn't deserve the praise he's getting. So the latest spin attempt is the school called the police because Ahmed was being sassy?
That's even worse tbh.
These theories really need to be focus grouped before dissemination.

It seemed sort of obvious from the first story I saw that the kid didn't divulge what happened to the police. And that's understandable, since we have Miranda rights and all that. But it also seems like he didn't explain himself to teachers either. That's not okay. And if he was seriously his SIXTH period class when his teacher freaked, it seems obvious that the school didn't think it was actually a bomb. Instead, they thought it was the kid trying to scare people by pretending it was a bomb. That's actually what the popo has been saying the whole time, so it's not really a new theory.
I do think what Chris Matthews said at like the six-minute mark is what rings truest: People took sides before even knowing what happened. There was no investigation before everyone declared the kid a hero. You had folks like Blake (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=3460) saying, 'Of course; it's Dallas.' For some reason, the kid's testimony, which was being coached, is considered ironclad, and everything that the school and police are saying is considered an attempt to cover this up. It's fucking pathetic for people who are ignorant on this matter outside of a view articles to try to take the intellectual high road.

Since everyone involved knew it wasn't a bomb, all the teacher had to say was "Put that away. Thing looks like a bomb. People could freak out over that."
And if he didn't put it away, take it away until class is over.
I see no other course of action here that is justified.

That doesn't do anything. It doesn't explain anything; it doesn't defuse any tension. And refusing to explain it or put it away creates more tension. The kid himself knew it was suspicious, or could be taken that way. So if he knew it was suspicious and still kept out there even after being told to put it away, it's his fault.
It's like if you walked into the cafeteria with a glass flask filled with brown liquid (no labels):
Teacher: Chump, what's that?
You: It's tea.
T: Why do you have it in an old liquor bottle?
Y: It's tea.
T: Well, can you put it away? It looks suspicious.
Y: It's tea.
T: Look, Chump, put it away, or will have the officer (all schools have them) take it from you.
Y: It's tea.
Is the teacher an idiot here? There are some very easy ways to tell that it's tea and not alcohol. But why is it the teacher's responsibility to determine that beyond a shadow of a doubt? And who are you to decline the teacher's request to put it away? They might suspend you even after they find out the flask had tea and no alcohol. You didn't lie, but you didn't cooperate, and you made it into a big deal.

There's a difference between "No one thought it was a bomb," and "Everyone knew it wasn't." Initially, no one thought it was suspicious. But after he refused to put it away, it started to be become suspicious. No one thought it was a bomb still, it seems, but people may have thought he wanted to make a big deal about it. Maybe simply because he was proud of his work. Maybe because he knows what kind of reaction a Muslim kid walking around with a device like that would warrant, and it was sort of a thrill. If you think that's silly, you probably don't know what being a minority is like. I can tell you from experience that it's sometimes cool to use stereotypes to your advantage. Being a large black man, I can totally bull my way past some things just by seeming angry and confrontational. Of course, after the police shootings, I wouldn't think of doing that anymore.

Because the teacher doesn't want to be an asshole and confiscate the bottle. The teacher could believe the student is telling the truth but knows that you aren't supposed to bring those bottles to school. If you have a kid, you should trying sending them to school with a bottle like that and see if they can get away with an "It's tea" retort. Yes, and I don't think anyone in here thinks the school acted like it was a bomb.
You can't have it both ways.
Pretending you have a bomb is illegal even if it's obvious you don't. No one thought it was a bomb the kid had. They did think he was leaving it ambiguous to arouse suspicion. I don't know if he was. But it's very possible, especially given that his father has done stupid things to get attention. You have to understand that the dude's a teenager, and goofy, inconsiderate things are not past teens at all. And people do evocative things all the time to take political stances. Shit, we had a Latino walkout at my high school when I was a junior. Some of my friends took a vow of silence when Bush won the 2004 election (freshman year). I can go on.
None of that makes the kid guilty of doing anything but making a clock and liking it so much he showed it to everyone he met. But the kid could have been a race-baiting asshole who was vocal enough that he and his father were already known to the police to the point that they'd assume he'd be at the center of any controversy at that school. We don't know, and that's what an investigation is for.
From what I have read from the police, they wanted him to say that he deliberately made it look like a bomb to freak people out and used several officers to interrogate him without his parents to get that out of him.

Yep, that's ridiculous and illegal, and cops deserve to be heavily reprimanded for that. It's absolutely not okay to violate anyone's constitutional rights, and to try to get a confession out of a minor without his parents of a lawyer there should be punishable by termination, I believe. I don't think I've said anything to contradict that stance. Of course, we'll see if an investigation turns up a different story, however.

No one. And no one but the kid knew it wasn't. Do you really want to keep refusing to acknowledge the difference here? It's boring.
So there is no reason for you to pretend anyone did.
I never did. Seriously, stop this line of reasoning it's wrong, and it's really eliminates a desire to go back and forth with you.
So if the kid just intended it to be a clock, what more did he have to tell them other than it was a clock?
Why he won't put it away, who can verify why it's there. In a legal sense, he never had to say anything. But from a practical sense, he should have answered all of their questions as completely as possible.
So they knew it wasn't a bomb and there was no evidence he was a race baiting asshole. I take issue with your saying the kid was known as a controversial figure by the police. I have seen nothing in the press about the kid's having a history with the police at all.
I never said he was controversial and I never said he was race-baiting. So take your issues somewhere else. I said those things were possible, and that an investigation is needed to get a better sense of what happened. CN has posted quite a few articles attack the common view of this case. Most of them are stupid and baseless. Some of them have information that's not really being discussed in the mainstream media. There could be a completely different story here. Me saying that is not me saying that such a story exists. Rather, it's me saying that people shouldn't jump to conclusions based on partial information. And that's totally what you're doing even if you won't admit it. More importantly, that's what people like Obama and the folks at MIT did. And that's silly.
And if his father was known for this kind of thing, why did every school and police official play directly into what they perceived as his agenda? Surely before turning it over to the city cops, someone at the school could have said "Wait. Call his parents." It's just so simple. This idiocy could have been stopped at every level but everyone involved decided to go full retard and make the situation as bad as possible short of tasing the kid.
And you won't find me saying there wasn't idiocy at every level. That includes the kid, though. One side acting foolishly doesn't prevent the other side from doing the same.
How would an "investigation" change the fact he was interrogated by multiple policemen without his parents present?
Again, this is getting boring. I've said so many times that the police were wrong. Eh, again, I think you're out of touch. I've known plenty of people who drank or did worse in school and have gone on to live productive lives. Any teacher worth their salt knows when to let kids slide. Letting a kid openly drink in school is not that time, but defusing the situation while not confiscating the substance may be if the kid is good enough at school and seems healthy.
Of course anyone can check if it's a clock or tea. You're making this way more complicated than it is.
