Beirut (AFP) - Children were among at least 56 civilians killed in strikes by a US-led coalition on Tuesday near a Syrian village held by the Islamic State group, a monitor said.
The civilians had apparently been mistaken for jihadists and were bombed while fleeing fighting in Al-Tukhar in Aleppo province, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"There are at least 56 dead, including 11 children, and dozens more wounded, including some in critical condition," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.
The monitor -- which relies on a network of sources inside Syria for its information -- says it determines what planes carried out raids according to their type, location, flight patterns and the munitions involved.
Asked about the strike, the coalition said it had "conducted air strikes near Manbij... recently" and that it was looking into the reports alleging civilian casualties.
"As with any allegation we receive, we will review any information we have about the incident... such as the proximity of the location" to coalition air strikes, it wrote in an email to AFP.
"We take all measures during the targeting process to avoid or minimise civilian casualties or collateral damage and to comply with the principles of the Law of Armed Conflict."
Al-Tukhar lies 14 kilometres (nine miles) north of the town of Manbij, a key IS stronghold that has been repeatedly targeted in raids by the US-led coalition.
On Monday, the Observatory said 21 civilians had been killed in coalition raids in the area, 15 of them in a northern district of Manbij and another six in Al-Tukhar.
Manbij sits on IS's main supply route between Syria and neighbouring Turkey and has been the target of a US-backed offensive by a Kurdish-Arab alliance of fighters since May 31.
In June, the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance broke into western districts of the town, but their advance has been slowed in the past month because of landmines planted by the jihadists and ongoing suicide attacks.
The US-led coalition said in a statement on Tuesday that SDF fighters had captured an IS "command centre and logistics hub" in western Manbij on Sunday.
It said the fighters had also seized "a significant amount of the city during the operation, which provided civilians the opportunity to escape."
SDF fighters control around a quarter of Manbij, according to the Observatory.
- Clashes near Aleppo -
Near Aleppo, meanwhile, government forces sought to tighten their siege of rebel-held districts of the battleground second city.
Clashes erupted around Handarat, a largely deserted Palestinian refugee camp north of the city, after government forces seized parts of the only remaining supply route into rebel-held eastern districts, effectively severing them from the outside world.
The capture of the Castello Road has raised fears of a lengthy siege of east Aleppo, where residents have already reported food shortages and rising prices.
The Observatory said fierce clashes were under way around Handarat Camp, which is less than two kilometres (barely a mile) from the northern outskirts of the city.
"If the regime takes Handarat, it will be able to completely asphyxiate the rebels in east Aleppo, and they will be unable to launch counter-attacks to retake the Castello Road," Abdel Rahman told AFP.
Elsewhere in Aleppo province, 12 civilians were killed in strikes on the rebel-held town of Atareb, said the Observatory.
Analysts have warned that the government advances around Aleppo could be "devastating" for the rebels.
And the United Nations has raised concern about the fate of the more than 200,000 people still living in rebel-held districts.
It said relief supplies had already been stockpiled in the city, but "further life-saving aid is needed urgently."

They're no different than you. They see the West as monolithic, don't discriminate between Europe or US. You see them as monolithic, don't discriminate between Syria or Afghanistan.
50 killed in Orlando, they barely hear about it but every Westerner knows every detail. 50 killed in Syria, not even a blip in our news cycle but it reverberates through the ME.

i understand and agree with the left's concern of painting muslims with a broad brush. but it's disingenuous to say "nothing whatsoever" to do with terrorism. even if its a small sect, that's more than "nothing"
its also true that people pervert their religion to justify violence, and that the religion itself isn't a violent entity (inb4 quran verses but lets be real there's some gory shit in any religious text). but how often do we see that in today's day and age with christians or other religions in general... killing in the name of their god/religion. everybody was quick to jump on robert dear... but the fact that you have to keep pointing at ONE person/incident as opposed to whats been a movement overseas, is telling enough

Makes no sense. You said Muslims overseas "barely heard about Orlando"
That's horseshit.
If you're talking about peaceful civilian folk, sure. But isis was well aware it happened and they were citing it as a victory. Show me a link of Americans celebrating a specific slaughter of middle eastern civilians. Not talking about the generality of a war, but a specific massacre of innocent civilians

Man kills woman with machete in Germany
A Syrian man killed a woman with a machete and wounded two others Sunday outside a bus station in the southwestern German city of Reutlingen before being arrested. Police said there were no indications pointing to terrorism.Police spokesman Bjoern Reusch told The Associated Press that witnesses said the 21-year-old asylum-seeker, who was known to police, was having an argument with the woman before attacking her about 4:30 p.m. The suspect, whose name was not released, wounded another woman and a man as he fled.
Investigators were still trying to determine the motive behind the attack, but Reusch said "there are no indications this was a terrorist act."
The Bild newspaper reported the woman worked at the kebab stand near where confrontation took place.
The attack comes as Germany (http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/germany.htm) is on edge following a rampage at a Munich mall on Friday night by an 18-year-old who suffered psychological problems in which nine people were killed, and an ax attack on a train a week ago that left five wounded in southern Germany, for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility.
Some Germans are also fearful of any signs of a rise in crime or lawlessness after the country registered some 1 million asylum-seekers last year.

Suicide bomber in Germany pledged allegiance to ISIS leader
Ansbach, Germany (CNN)The Syrian suicide bomber who injured 15 people in a Sunday night attack on a music festival in Ansbach, Germany, left behind a video pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said Monday.
The ISIS-affiliated media group Amaq claimed the attacker was an ISIS "soldier" in a statement the group's supporters posted online Monday, but there is no evidence he was in contact with ISIS or directed to carry out an attack.
In the video left on a mobile phone, the 27-year-old Syrian announced his threat to carry out an attack "as an act of revenge against Germans, because they obstruct Islam," Herrmann told a press conference. The mansaid the attack would be committed in the name of Allah as retaliation for the killing of Muslims. The bomber, who has not been named, was killed.
"I believe that after this video we cannot doubt that this attack was an Islamist terror attack," Herrmann said.

Four of the 15 victims were seriously injured in the attack, Ansbach Mayor Carla Seidel said at a news conference Monday.
The bombing has rattled the German public following a week of violence in southern Germany that began on July 18, when an immigrant teen, apparently also inspired by ISIS, stabbed passengers on a train in Wurzburg (http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/18/world/germany-train-stabbing/index.html) in Bavaria.
That was followed by a shooting spree Friday in which nine people were killed (http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/22/europe/germany-munich-shooting/index.html) in the Bavarian state capital, Munich, before a Syrian asylum seeker killed a woman in Reutlingen, in the neighboring southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, on Sunday, hours ahead of the Ansbach attack.
The wave of violence has fueled criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's welcoming stance toward immigrants, with the hashtag #Merkelsommer, or "Merkel summer," circulating on social media.
What are the rules for asylum seekers in Germany? (http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/25/europe/germany-attacks-asylum-seekers-refugees/index.html)
Germany accepted more than 1 million asylum seekers last year, and some Germans have expressed fears that terrorists might have entered the country among them, or that disaffected youths among the refugees could be susceptible to radicalization.

Not taking in any more refugees, empowering/encouraging moderates to combat extremism from within the religion, requiring our leaders to have an adult conversation (i.e., ISIS is a representative of Islam; salafists/wahabists aren't fringe groups, but represent the views of a large number of muslims worldwide), discrediting/disempowering conservative muslims and their communities here in the US.
It's not realistic to think that we can deport all the muzzies. Nor should we. And shit like having a database to keep track of muslims is stupid.
But Islam, as a religion and ideology, is a social and ideological problem. So why not treat it like one? The best way to combat racism, sexism, etc... is by changing people's attitudes on the subject matter. That has to be done to Islam too -- and most importantly from within the religion.

So they fuck around for two years and then let them in. Time passing does not equal thorough vetting. It's not like we can ask Assad if Achmed from Syria is a fucking terrorist. We let Achmed pinky swear he isn't a terrorist with no other way to verify and then we let him in.

Apparently Blake thinks criminal soliciation laws don't apply to Muslims.
It is a permissible reading of the [free exercise clause]...to say that if prohibiting the exercise of religion is not the object of the [law] but merely the incidental effect of a generally applicable and otherwise valid provision, the First Amendment has not been offended.... To make an individual's obligation to obey such a law contingent upon the law's coincidence with his religious beliefs, except where the State's interest is "compelling"–permitting him, by virtue of his beliefs, "to become a law unto himself,"–contradicts both constitutional tradition and common sense. To adopt a true "compelling interest" requirement for laws that affect religious practice would lead towards anarchy.

France church attack: Muslims attend Mass
Muslims across France have attended Catholic Mass in a gesture of solidarity after the murder of a priest on Tuesday.
Fr Jacques Hamel was killed in his church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen by two men who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.
France's Muslim council, the CFCM, urged Muslims to show "solidarity and compassion" over the murder.
"We are all Catholics of France," said Anouar Kbibech, the head of the CFCM.
Services were held in Rouen as well as in Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral.
"We're very touched," the Archbishop of Rouen, Dominique Lebrun, told BFMTV.
"It's an important gesture of fraternity. They've told us, and I think they're sincere, that it's not Islam which killed Jacques Hamel."

Muslims dont scare me (a lot of people dont seem to realize Muslim men are indistinguishable from non Muslims of the same ethnicity), but a lot of conservative Muslim beliefs are antithetical to western society, particularly when it comes to women.
I feel like that is where the conversation needs to be - how do we encourage more assimilation into society and acceptance of American rights without inadvertently scattering the seeds for yet more radical extremism, at home and abroad?

Nah, it's nothing more than profiling by painting a large brush on every ethnicity based in the Muslim world. The fact is, you have a deep-seeded biased against certain ethnicities so you basically point out every crime committed from that group whether it's terrorism or not. Why not do a similar thread for other races or ethnicities? Why not start a thread of whites and pedophilia since 80% of pedophiles in this country are white?

Muslims pray with Catholics over priest's 'barbaric' murder
Rouen (France) (AFP) - Muslims attended Catholic mass in churches around France on Sunday in solidarity and sorrow following the brutal jihadist murder of a priest, the latest in a string of attacks.
More than 100 Muslims were among the 2,000 faithful who packed the 11th-century Gothic cathedral of Rouen, near the Normandy town where two jihadi teenagers slit the throat of 85-year-old Father Jacques Hamel.
"I thank you in the name of all Christians," Rouen Archbishop Dominique Lebrun told them. "In this way you are affirming that you reject death and violence in the name of God."

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE - Pope Francis on Sunday defended his avoidance of the term “Islamic violence” by suggesting the potential for violence lies in every religion, including Catholicism.
“I don’t like to talk about Islamic violence, because every day, when I read the newspaper, I see violence,” Francis said, when asked about why he never speaks of Islamic terrorism or fundamentalism when condemning attacks such as the murder of a French priest last week, who had his throat slit by an Islamic terrorist as he was celebrating Mass.
The pope said that when he reads the newspaper, he reads about an Italian who kills his fiancé or his mother in law.
“They are baptized Catholics. They are violent Catholics,” Francis said, adding that if he speaks of “Islamic violence,” then he has to speak of “Catholic violence” too.
“I believe that it’s not fair to identify Islam with violence. It’s not fair and it’s not true,” he continued, adding that he’s had a long conversation with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the Cairo-based Islamic university often described as the Vatican of the Sunni world.“I know how they think. They look for peace, encounter,” he said.
Francis added that in the case of European youth, many have been left “with no ideals, no work, that end in the hands of drugs and alcohol, and then go over there and enlist.”
He did acknowledge that ISIS is an “Islamic state that presents itself as violent.”
“It’s a fundamentalist group that calls itself ISIS, but it can’t be said, it’s not true, and it’s not fair, that Islam is terrorist,” Francis said.
“As long as the god of money is at the center of the global economy and not the human person, man and woman, this is the first terrorism,” he said, defining it as a “terrorism at the bases,” against the whole of humanity.

If I posted all the verses talking about violence it would be a mile long.
small example
Quran (4:104) (http://www.spurstalk.com/quran/noble/sura4.html#104) - "And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain..." Is pursuing an injured and retreating enemy really an act of self-defense?
Quran (5:33) (http://www.spurstalk.com/quran/noble/sura5.html#33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
Quran (8:12) (http://www.spurstalk.com/quran/noble/sura8.html#12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them" No reasonable person would interpret this to mean a spiritual struggle.
Quran (8:15) (http://www.spurstalk.com/quran/noble/sura8.html#15) - "O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them. (16)Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless maneuvering for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end."
Chopping off fingertips.....are you kidding me? How could anyone not see just how sick this shit is? Chopping off heads?
I have a Koran and it is nothing but ....PUNISH PUNISH PUNISH.

Really hadn't paid much attention to Islam prior to 9/11. Just another wacked out religion. But, that all changed when I saw all those people killed by PRAISE ALLAH. So I became curious about how anyone could ram themselves into building killing thousands. So I set out to find out and I have.
It all starts in a cave on a mountain when Mohammad first came in contact with the Angel Gabriel. Obviously that is bullshit which makes Mohammad a liar. A liar and a murderer. And this freak is the prophet of Islam, that right there says it all. A gigantic hoax perpertrated by a madman.
22 books and 6 CD's later and a reading of the Koran has taught me all there is to know about this sick shit. The message of Islam is this.....kill off those you can't convert.........anyone not getting that doesn't know Islam.
Those who know me know how deep I go with my interests, well add Islam. I left no stone unturned, I never do.
So if you plan on trying to sell....Islam is actually....anything but violent you will be totally dismantled, trust me. I will start with when Mohammad came down from the mountain.........ok?
There are 10 of these. Here's put one.
5. Muhammad in his Quran commands death or the cutting off of hands and feet for fighting and corrupting the land.
5:33 Indeed, the punishment of those who fight Allah and His Messenger and who go around corrupting the land is to be killed, crucified, have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or to be banished from the land. That is a disgrace for them in this life, and in the life to come theirs will be a terrible punishment. 34 Except for those who repent before you overpower them. Know, then, that Allah is All-Forgiving, Merciful. (Majid Fakhry, An Interpretation of the Quran, New York: NYUP, 2000, 2004)
According to the hadith, the historical context of these verses runs as follows and clarifies "fighting" and "corrupting" the land.
Some Arab tribesmen visited the prophet, but fell sick in the uncongenial climate of Medina, so he recommended an old folk belief: drinking the milk and urine of a camel. Subsequently, they are reported to have felt better. However, for some reason, after departing from Medina, they killed some of Muhammad’s shepherds, turned apostate, and drove off the prophet’s camels.
This news reached him, and he ordered them to be hunted down and brought before him. He decreed that their hands and feet should be cut off, their eyes gouged out, and their bodies thrown upon stony ground until they died.
For more information on this policy that punishes people today based on Sura 5:33, even on ambiguous charges like colonialism, racism, and the disintegration of family relationships see here (http://www.al-islam.org/al-tawhid/definition-terrorism.htm), and for a reply to Muslim apologists, refer to this article (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/crucify.htm), which also contrasts Christ with Muhammad. This shorter article (http://www.spurstalk.com/Silas/shepherds.htm) explains the background of these verses and this gruesome law. Muhammad tortured people.
Thus, gruesome violence sits at the heart of early Islam—in Muhammad’s life and in the Quran. Islam is therefore not the religion of peace.

What lie? The Koran makes it very clear what Islam is all about, that being world dominance and if they have to kill off the non believers. cool.
Other religions aren't ramming themselves into buildings, holding public beheadings, following a prophet who was a murderer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e7Uxtt9rYA
Like I said I could post something similiar to this every day for a year, the reason being Islam is nothing but a load of violent bullshit and only a fool wouldn;t see it.
I challenge anyone to show me anything talking about how Islam ISN'T about death to non believers. Where is that at?
This is Islam, and that is just a small example of the overwelming amount of violence towards non believers found in the Koran.
Quotes from the Quran/Koran
http://www.truthbeknown.com/images/Folio_from_a_Qur%27an_(8th-9th_century).jpg (http://truthbeknown.com/islamquotes.htm)“This Book is not to be doubted…. As for the unbelievers, it is the same whether or not you forewarn them; they will not have faith. God has set a seal upon their hearts and ears; their sight is dimmed and grievous punishment awaits them.” Quran 2:1/2:6-2:10
“God’s curse be upon the infidels! Evil is that for which they have bartered away their souls. To deny God’s own revelation, grudging that He should reveal His bounty to whom He chooses from among His servants! They have incurred God’s most inexorable wrath. An ignominious punishment awaits the unbelievers.” Quran 2:89-2:90
“Lord…Give us victory over the unbelievers.” Quran 2:286
“Lord…give us victory over the unbelievers.” Quran 3:147
“I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers.” Quran 8:12
“Let not the unbelievers think they will ever get away. They have not the power so to do. Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your command, so that you may strike terror into the enemy of Allah and your enemy…” Quran 8:59-60
“When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them.” Quran 9:5
Now add all the violence we are seeing today because of Islam and how could anyone not get this?
No end to this, WHY?

Because right now, there's an international terrorist movement associated with a group of Muslims. But the other religions have prophets who slaughtered people left and right (Judaism/Chrisitianity - David/Moses) and there have been terrorist/extremist groups from other religions in the past, but Islam is being targeted because it's an international problem which basically started as a small problem in 1979 and is mainstream now.

http://theweek.com/articles/640943/how-angela-merkel-imperiled-europes-future
That's why a new Pew Center study (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/) of the migrants streaming into Europe is so important — because it transports us beyond the daily drumbeat of sensational headlines to gaze upon the alarming demographic reality confronting the continent, and to extrapolate its likely political end point.
The study is filled with illuminating data — on the national origin of the migrants (the number of asylum seekers coming from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq more than quadrupled (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-04/) between 2013 and 2015); on the leading destinations of asylum seekers (Germany ranks first (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/)); on public attitudes toward the EU's asylum policies (overwhelmingly negative (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-03/)).
But the most ominous numbers can be found in a chart (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-06/) titled, "Young men make up 42 percent of all of Europe's asylum seekers in 2015." That's right: 42 percent (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/4-asylum-seeker-demography-young-and-male/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-14/) of first-time asylum seekers in 2015 were men aged 18 to 34. And the percentage of asylum seekers who were women in that age cohort? Eleven percent (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/4-asylum-seeker-demography-young-and-male/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-14/).
That imbalance — much larger in some countries (http://www.pewglobal.org/2016/08/02/number-of-refugees-to-europe-surges-to-record-1-3-million-in-2015/pgm_2016-08-02_europe-asylum-06/) — points to a future in which considerable numbers of young men will find it extremely difficult to find spouses. And that's a serious problem. As a leading expert on the topic put it a few months ago in an important article (http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/europe-refugees-migrant-crisis-men-213500) for Politico:
[S]ocieties with extremely skewed sex ratios are more unstable even without jihadi ideologues in their midst. Numerous empirical studies have shown that sex ratios correlate significantly with violence and property crime — the higher the sex ratio, the worse the crime rate. [Politico (http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/europe-refugees-migrant-crisis-men-213500)]

You keep starting these threads crying about Islam but offer nothing here but tears and angst. If you want me to leave you and other Islamophobes alone to cry, that's fine, I'll just offer lulz

They had a reformation, ignored the old testament stuff, and other catholic doctrines. Then the colonial ways of invading, stealing, and slaughtering people became too expensive, and finally Civil rights movement finally left them no choice to adapt to the rest of society. Now, you only have a fringe group that's irrelevant and too scared to do anything crazy.

I read the English translation by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, it reads...
...he is an Islamic spiritual scholar who is well versed in both classical and modern Islamic teachings.
So he knows the Koran.

Does the book it's self promote violence to non believers? Was Mohammad himself a murderer?
Answer the question.
Are you saying that Islam is no more violent today than any other religion, well?
Are you saying that Mohammd didn't go around killing people he couldn't covert?
And I have to go slower for you. There's not just one Islam being practiced today. Go look it up fatty. Numerous sects out there practicing in whatever way they want, not just the violent jihadi way.
Also, is that Maulana guy well-versed in Arabic? Is he even an Arab? He was born in India :lol.

"We let loose on them a raging wind over several inauspicious days, so that We might them taste the torment of humilation in the life of this world, and surely the life of the Hereafter will be more humilating"
Oh hell yes, takk about the religion of peace, hahahahahaha~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

People who God is going to destroy....
We sent them a punishment....
Who in the hell is...WE?

Yusra Mardini: Olympic Syrian refugee who swam for three hours in sea to push sinking boat carrying 20 to safety
The teenage swimmer used her talent and risked her life to help save the lives of 19 others
Almost every athlete at the 2016 Olympic Games (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/news/rio-2016-at-least-271-russian-athletes-cleared-to-take-part-in-olympic-games-a7172576.html) will have an interesting backstory, but Yusra Mardini's is more extraordinary than most.
Mardini is in Rio to represent a team of 10 refugee Olympic athletes.
While any other 18-year-old’s biggest achievements may be confined to the A-level results they leave school with, Mardini’s is almost incomprehensible.
She and her sister are responsible for helping to save the lives of 20 people, including their own, after jumping off their sinking dinghy into the Aegean Sea and pushing their boat to land.
Mardini, who now lives in Berlin, will compete in the women’s 100-metre butterfly and freestyle heats on Saturday and Wednesday. Her appearance is being touted as one of the most highly anticipated of the Games.
Syria
Mardini was a talented swimmer in war-torn Damascus and professionally backed by the Syrian Olympic Committee. As unrest in the besieged country escalated, she would often find herself training in pools where roofs had been blown open by bombings. “Sometimes we couldn’t train because of the war,” she said. “And sometimes you would be swimming in pools where the roofs were [blown open] in three or four places.”
Damascus became increasingly unstable and Mardini and her sister Sarah eventually left Syria, travelling through Lebanon and Turkey before trying to reach Greece.
Saving lives
Thirty minutes after setting off from Turkey, the motor on their boat, which was meant for six people but carrying 20, began to fail. Most of those on board it could not swim. With no other alternative, Mardini, Sarah and two strong swimmers jumped into the sea and swam for three hours in open water to stop their dinghy from capsizing, eventually reaching Lesbos.
“We were the only four who knew how to swim,” she said of the experience. “I had one hand with the rope attached to the boat as I moved my two legs and one arm. It was three and half hours in cold water. Your body is almost like … done. I don’t know if I can describe that.”
But while she now hates open water, the memory is not a nightmare for her. “I remember that without swimming I would never be alive maybe because of the story of this boat. It’s a positive memory for me."
After Lesbos, Mardini and Sarah travelled through Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary and Austria before arriving at their final destination: Germany.
Mardini is equally remarkable for her self-effacing attitude and resilience as she is for her life-saving act. “It's tough,” she has said. “It was really hard, for everyone, and I don't blame anyone if they cried. But sometimes you just have to move on.”
Starting again in Berlin
Mardini has now settled in Berlin, where she was put in touch with the Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 swimming club and taken on as a member. Quickly realising her potential, Coach Sven Spannekrebs began considering Mardini for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But her road to the Games turned out to be a much quicker path.
Mardini trains for two to three hours every morning, attends school and then continues to train in the evening.
According to the Guardian, Syria has been monitoring her swimming career and asking for regular updates.
Tackling the dehumanisation of refugees
“I want everyone to think refugees are normal people who had their homelands and lost them not because they wanted to run away and be refugees, but because they have dreams in their lives and they had to go,” she said at a press conference announcing her place on the team.
“Everything is about trying to get a new and better life and by entering the stadium we are encouraging everyone to pursue their dreams.”
She also has hopes one day that peace could be brought to fruition in Syria and she could take her story home.
“Maybe I will build my life here in Germany, and when I am an old lady I will go back to Syria and teach people about my experience.”

Team Refugee athlete Yusra Mardini wins her 100m butterfly heat
NBC Olympics.com
Published: August 6, 2016, 7:12 pm Updated: August 6, 2016, 7:33 pm
Yusra Mardini, 18, is competing at her first Olympic Games, just like many of her competitors.
But unlike some of the athletes she’s up against, Mardini is also on a brand-new team on the Olympic stage, the Team Refugee Athletes. Mardini fled Syria with her sister; part of their journey included pushing their flooding, overcrowded dinghy through the Mediterranean Sea as the strongest swimmers on board.
The Syrian swimming star, who competed at the 2012 Short Course World Championships, eventually made it to Germany. Her training facility was originally built to host the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
“Since arriving in Berlin, I have been humbled by the warm welcome I’ve received from the swimming community and everyone associated with the Olympic Games,” Mardini said through a VISA press release, one of the team’s sponsors. “It means so much to me to have a partner that accepts me, includes me, and provides me with the same opportunities as other athletes competing in Rio.”
Mardini and nine other Team Refugee Olympic athletes entered the Opening Ceremony on Friday night as the last delegation before the host nation; normally, if a swimmer or other athlete is competing the day after the Opening Ceremony, they will not march (see: Michael Phelps for the past four Games).
Instead, Mardini marched with her newfound teammates, joined in Olympic unity under the “refugee” umbrella.
Then, Saturday morning, she raced to one minute, 9.21 seconds in the 100m butterfly. She added about a second to her entry time, listed at 1:08.51. She didn’t swim fast enough to advance to the semifinal Saturday night (Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden advanced in first place with a time of 56.26 seconds).
It didn’t matter: She won her preliminary heat, made up of swimmers from Grenada, Yemen, Rwanda and Qatar.
And her Olympic schedule isn’t over; Mardini is entered in the 100m freestyle, where the preliminary heats begin on Wednesday. She’s even looked beyond the Rio Games, telling the Associated Press, “I hope for more in Tokyo,” the next Olympic Games in 2020.

Raising American Muslim Kids in the Age of Trump
By WAJAHAT ALIAUG. 6, 2016
I’m up at 3 a.m., burping my new baby girl, Nusayba, smelling her fresh, new baby skin and rubbing her soft, bald head.
Like most parents with young kids, I think about their future: What will my daughter’s first word be? Will she like spicy South Asian food or will I have to shame myself by ordering “mild”? Will my American Muslim daughter be allowed to leave the Trump detention camps if she grows up to be a “10”? Would that make her eligible for a Trump Beauty Pageant?
I often muse about a potential dystopic future when I see the orange, thin-skinned Republican candidate speaking. He has already recommended “extreme vetting” of Muslims and once said he’d “absolutely” require Muslims to register in a special database. He retaliated against Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Gold Star parents of an American Muslim soldier. His words unleash casual anti-Muslim bigotry: A June poll found that 50 percent of people surveyed supported his proposal to bar Muslims from entering the country.
This is the America we’re raising our two Muslim kids in. My wife’s friend Khadeeja Abdullah, the mother of a 1-year-old, said she had recently seen a viral video of a young Muslim boy asking if he would be kicked out of the country if Donald J. Trump became president. “My heart shattered into pieces. Our children should not live in fear,” she said.
I didn’t live in fear growing up in Fremont, Calif., in the 1980s and 1990s. Like the Khans, my parents are Muslim immigrants originally from Pakistan. My parents didn’t keep their own copy of the Constitution in their pockets, but they were known to bust out Mervyn’s coupons and exquisite daal recipes on command. Islam was a vibrant reality for us, comfortably embedded within memories of watching Thundercats cartoons on Saturdays, listening to Dad’s Jimi Hendrix CDs and seeing my mother’s sari collection.
I have now been transformed into a professional adult in his 30s, just like my parents were when they had me. Their generation was forged from immigrant steel and clarified butter. They built mosques out of abandoned shops, drove two states away to find halal meat, started American Muslim institutions, worked full time, raised kids, taught us the Quran and found time to make lamb biryani for an extended family of 12 living in a two-bedroom apartment.
I am not doing that. I can barely catch up on my Netflix shows. But I still I want my children to know the rich cultural and religious traditions given to me — traditions that I took for granted.
In recent conversations with about a dozen other American Muslim friends and parents, I found a lot of agreement on the challenge we’re facing: Our kids will know a kind of anti-Muslim bigotry that we never did. At the same time, there’s also a healthy debate on how to raise practicing Muslim children here.
Hina Khan-Mukhtar, a mother of three in the Bay Area, said the only way is for us to transform into “Super-Muslims,” minus the cape. “In America, you can’t be a mediocre Muslim,” she said. “You have to be the best of the best, and you have to show your kids that you have a ‘superior product’ that you are offering them. There are so many ‘-isms’ calling for their attention and for their loyalty — individualism, atheism, materialism, extremism. Islam needs to trump them all.”
Unfortunately for my children, I excel in mediocrity. This Ramadan, I opened my fasts at home with a date and some takeout food. I usually prayed Maghrib, the evening prayer, by myself in the family room. My wife, a full-time doctor, supermom and pregnant with our second child at the time, did her best to join me, but her schedule left her exhausted.
I felt guilty that my son, who is about to turn 2, was experiencing the most broke Ramadan ever. I wanted to give him the 2016 version of what I had growing up when my mother, grandmother, cousins and I would assemble in the kitchen and prepare the pakoras, samosas and fruit chaat of the Ramadan iftar meal. My father would come home and lead us in prayer. On the weekends, we’d host “milad” parties with people reciting poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad.
One potential route in producing “superior Muslims” is to follow the model of Orthodox Jewish Americans and invest tremendous resources and time to create enclosed schools or home schooling co-ops for our communities.
This environment might protect kids from bullying or the task of being a professional Muslim. I went to an all-boys Catholic high school, and I was often asked to be the cultural ambassador of 1.6 billion people, to explain head scarves and fasting. Even though I had to be a walking Wikipedia, it encouraged me to be more bold with my Muslim identity.
Army Major Jason Moy, my old law school roommate, is skeptical of Muslim-only environments. “Complete isolation is never a winning strategy,” he told me. “I am a firm believer in allowing our children to be completely involved in American culture, holidays and food.”
Thankfully, American Muslim kids can find halal hot dogs at their local mosques, which have doubled in number since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a sign that despite the rising bigotry, Muslims communities are able to thrive in America.
I have never been culturally, spiritually or intellectually fulfilled by most of my neighborhood mosques, especially as many still relegate women to side entrances. They tried their best and have evolved considerably, but the hodgepodge blend of Salafism, Deobandi Islam and traces of watered-down Sufism that I usually encountered didn’t move my soul.
For this reason, my family and I are spiritual nomads, not tied to any particular institution.
Razi Hashmi, a State Department employee and the parent of two young children, is also part of the “unmosqued” community. He is investing in a new project called “Make Space” in Virginia, a spiritual home for young Muslim parents, couples and millennials seeking a haven to practice their Islam and raise their children.
We live not too far away and we took my son, Ibrahim, there for Eid prayers recently. He wore his kurta and ran around the hall as the young imam preached about tolerance and requested donations so the worshipers could purchase their own space and finally leave the rented space in an Afghan restaurant.
We’re trying to retain so much of the good we inherited from our parents, throw away the rotten parts and improvise along the way. “We’re going to have to start from scratch,” said Willow Wilson, who writes the “Ms. Marvel” comic book series, which stars a teenage Muslim superhero. “In my local community, we’ve been actively discussing creating a kind of ‘Saturday school’ curriculum, so that kids get religious instruction in a community setting, but from sources we trust and in which we can actively participate.” The sources we don’t trust: shady, unqualified imams and right-wing religious material published overseas.
Instead, we’re turning to our peers and our collective best judgment as well as centuries-old traditions.

Based on annual stats, there were probably 20-25 homicides yesterday in the US alone by attackers with knives. We could determine a motive for each of those stabbings and assign it to some lifestyle/worldview. That's the definition of confirmation bias.
How many of those 20-25 had the attacker screaming God is greater?

Jeweler’s Act Of Kindness Goes Viral
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas jewelry store worker left a local woman stunned who was trying to sell an important, gold necklace given to her by her mother.
Noah, who does not want his last name used, denied the mother of two children the sale.
“It seemed like she was sad and there was tears in her eyes,” said Noah.
He said the woman told him she needed money for bills and was broke.
“I let her tell me how much she wanted to sell it and I gave her exactly what money she wanted,” said Noah.
The jewelry store employee not only dug into his own pockets, but after handing over a significant amount of money he gave back the necklace.
The moment was captured on security cameras.
“I didn’t think about it, I just grabbed the money. I grabbed the money and gave it to her,” said Noah.
The woman appears astonished on the video and begins to embrace Noah, wiping tears from her eyes.
“If I had her number I would call her back and see if she needed more money or more help, I’ll do it for her,” said Noah.
What people not might realize is that Noah is a Syrian refugee seeking asylum with his family. They escaped their civil war embattled homeland two years ago.
Noah said he shared the video with one person back home and had no idea that person would upload the now viral video.
“I feel better and that’s enough. Better than a lot of money,” said Noah.
Noah said he was just trying to help out someone who needed a hand. He feels it is that kind of generosity from others that has helped get his family to America alive.
“Doesn’t matter what religion you are. It doesn’t matter where you’re from. This is our humanity. Everybody should do that,” said Noah.

Are Christians regularly committing terrorists attacks in the name of Jesus?
Lol at the "regularly" qualifier.
People can, have and do use the Bible to justify terror.
But you won't look it up because you're busy crying about Islam.

How in the hell could anyone in their right mind compare the violence we see in Islam to anything else?
Just compare Jesus to Mohammad, there it is.
Mohammad had how many people killed? THAT, is Islam, killing people that won't convert.
Why do we see so much negativity, so much of this sort of thing?

The Greatest Murder Machine in History
By Mike Konrad (http://www.spurstalk.com/mike_konrad)
When one thinks of mass murder, Hitler comes to mind. If not Hitler, then Tojo, Stalin, or Mao. Credit is given to the 20th-century totalitarians as the worst species of tyranny to have ever arisen. However, the alarming truth is that Islam has killed more than any of these, and may surpass all of them combined in numbers and cruelty. The enormity of the slaughters of the "religion of peace" are so far beyond comprehension that even honest historians overlook the scale. When one looks beyond our myopic focus, Islam is the greatest killing machine in the history of mankind, bar none.
The Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. -- Will Durant (http://www.danielpipes.org/comments/32812), as quoted on Daniel Pipes site.
Conservative estimates place the number at 80 million dead Indians.
According to some calculations, the Indian (subcontinent) population decreased by 80 million between 1000 (conquest of Afghanistan) and 1525 (end of Delhi Sultanate). -- Koenrad Elst (http://www.danielpipes.org/comments/201152)as quoted on Daniel Pipes site

Lol no. Your question is stupid and gets away from my point. We agree that fundamental Islam is used to justify terror.
The point I'm making is that the Bible is just as usable to justify violence as the Koran.
And you still have no answer as to what to do about Islam itself other than copy paste walls of worthless stats
