Yeah but it's harder than Avant (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=54054) at a Jr High cheerleaders competition.
Damn. This game IS hard af. Although it doesn’t seem unfair. Just a lot of pattern recognition that you can at least get further along a level each time before dying. It sure feels like an accomplishment just to get through one level.
Don’t like not having a boss meter though.

I guess if spend enough, I'll eventually find a great game.
Aggelos - 16 bit (I know) Metroid style game. But one of the funner games I've played this year. Nice progression of power ups and difficulty level so far. Controls are great and character feels responsive during attacks and jumps.
Plenty of checkpoints which put you back to full health as well as give you an opportunity to save.

I wonder what we'll see at E3. Hopefully lots about Astral Chain since it's supposed to release in August. Nintendo is doing another Direct for Pokemon Sword and Shield I think the day before their E3 video goes live, I guess to keep their E3 from being dominated by Pokemon the way their presentation last year was by Smash. Fire Emblem Three Houses will probably factor largely into it since that comes out in July and hasn't had a Direct dedicated to it yet like Mario Maker 2 and Pokemon have. I'm hoping to see release dates for Rune Factory 4 Special and Dragon Quest XI and maybe some Link's Awakening footage too.

Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are going to be your best bets. If you like old school turn based RPG too then check out Octopath Traveler. Though the RPG I'm really waiting for on Switch is Shin Megami Tensei V. Been brushing up on Japanese and learning some kanji in the hope I could play it immediately in 2020 or 2021 when I'm expecting it to launch (especially since 真・女神転生 is kind of light on story and heavy on combat).

If he has the Switch with the neon blue & red joycons the joycons sold separately in stores have their colors flipped from the ones that come with the system. So he'd be trying to return two sets of all red joycons. It would be pretty obvious he was trying to defraud them tbh.

Link's Awakening is pretty fucking good, but the framerate issues are annoying as hell. Supposedly it runs a lot better if you install to NAND instead of SD, but I already have BOTW installed to NAND leaving no room for any game larger than about 4.5GB.

No idea about NAND vs. SD. I ended up just buying the physical copy. It would have taken at least 3 days for me to download it with my shitty internet. UGG took 6 hours with me having to check it and tell it to resume the download.

Full Switch is a little bulky to use as a portable IMO. Doesn't slip into the pocket like Vita or New 3DS XL does for me. Plus it just doesn't feel that solid since it's so thin and the joycons detach. I bought a big bulky case for carrying it because it feels a little fragile IMO. If you only want to use Switch handheld I would think the Lite would be better. I haven't used one myself, but all the reviews I have seen say it feels more solid in the hand. But losing docking is a big tradeoff. Super Mario Odyssey is way better on the bigscreen with one joycon in each hand since it implements motion controls really well. Much harder to control handheld IMO. Plus the big open world looks amazing on a large screen. Zelda BOTW has a lot of wide open views since you're constantly climbing shit, so being able to dock the Switch for it is great too. Then for instance Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is worlds better docked than handheld. Docked it looks like a really good PS3 game graphically while handheld it looks like a really good Gamecube game graphically (the resolution drops to like 480p handheld). With that said, most Switch games I have played work really well handheld and I play my full Switch handheld vs docked maybe 60/40.
I'd probably still just buy the full Switch unless you have no interest whatsoever in playing it on your TV.

For anyone looking to buy right now, do not get the Black Friday Mario Kart 8 bundle. It's Nintendo trying to clear stocks of old hardware while the newer Switch for sale in the red box has something like twice the battery life between charges (it's not so much having a better battery, but having much better hardware that consumes a lot less power so lasts a lot longer). I don't think it makes sense to pay $300 for inferior Switch + Mario Kart 8 when you could pay $300 for the good Switch any time (the one in the red box) and then go pick Mario Kart 8 up for $30 from Target for BF.

Link's Awakening is pretty great if you like the old school top down Zelda games like the NES original or Link to the Past on SNES. The performance is pretty bad thanks to a terrible implementation of dynamic resolution, but the game is still a very solid 8.5/10 IMO. Yoshi's Crafted World is much cooler in action than it looks in reviews. I never beat it, but I thought it was a fun game in short spurts; e.g., beat a quick level, go back to your day. Don't know shit about Spyro though. You should check out Super Mario Maker 2 if you don't have it. That game is just built for handheld as even counting only the campaign, it is easily the best 2D Mario game since New Super Mario Bros back on the DS. Probably even the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World on SNES. I'd rate that shit a 9/10, I mean a must play. I wasn't very impressed by New Super Mario Bros U though, that's probably a 5/10 IMO. Yoshi's Crafted World I'd probably give a solid 7/10.

I'm pretty late into P5R and the new storyline after Christmas is pretty awesome. Best quality of life upgrade though is not having Morgana force you to sleep all the time.
I played the Japanese version of Persona 5 Scramble's demo and it was surprisingly good. I wasn't expecting much from yet another Musou game but the art style, music, and and elemental attacks actually work pretty decently. Also Morgana is a much funnier character in the Japanese version of the games since some of his character is based on this famous old Japanese book called "wagahai ha neko de aru" (I am a Cat) about a super arrogant cat who thinks his middle class owners are royalty so he is too. It's pretty funny the way Morgana talks in the Japanese game but it's a little touch that they couldn't translate into English since that book is only famous in Japan.

Shit if you're bored with Switch, they're selling online for decent money since they're pretty much impossible to get new thanks to the supply chain disruption. Especially if your Switch in unpatched, which you can check here:
https://ismyswitchpatched.com/
Of course if your Switch is unpatched you can put custom firmware on it and play all games for free, though you can never go online with it again in that case.
If you're looking at a new console the PS4 is the way to go. It's absolutely loaded with great games in all kinds of genres and most of the big blockbusters that aren't new are $20 by now. The exceptions are Sekiro which still only goes on sale around $40 and Red Dead Redemption 2 who sale price is usually around $30. IMO PS4 is the no-brainer best console to come out since the PS2 twenty years ago. And it's also the cheapest console I ever bought (in inflation adjusted dollars) with the cheapest games.

Do you put skins on your consoles? I'm looking to wall mount my PS4 but I want to put a skin on it first because it's black and hard to see otherwise.

I'm not so bored that I want to sell it. And I'm looking forward to some of the games coming up : Outer Words, new Mario Odyssey, new Zelda, and a new Metroid at some point. Also, my daughter uses it quite a bit. I did end up buying Mario Maker 2 which is more fun than I was expecting.
But the PS4 is sounding like a good idea. Plus I can put it on a different TV so I'm not waiting for my kid to get off the Switch.

Man...I have to say I've been pretty happy with Mario Maker 2. I kind of blew this game off thinking it was just another 2D platformer. But didn't realize that it was bringing in mechanics from all the various Mario games so there's a decent variation between one stage and the next. I'm about 50% done with story mode and while it is starting to get redundant, it's pretty great for a game where I can sit down and play for either 30 minutes or a couple of hours. So story mode alone is worth the price. I'll probably move on to play shared courses but not try to make any of my own.

Any recommendations for how to get a Switch without going through scalpers?
If you want the full fat dockable Switch with detachable joycons you're pretty much stuck paying scalper prices if you want it now. With hard to find systems Gamestop usually does bundles. Early last month they had a $430 pre-order bundle of Switch + Pro Controller + Game (I think it was Smash Bros) to be delivered by late April but that sold out in a few days. But that's MSRP system + MSRP Pro Controller (which is a must on a dockable Switch IMO) + MSRP Game, so you're not paying scalper prices for nothing extra in that case. So might be worth watching out for more full Switch bundles from them. If they get any new full fat Switches that's how Gamestop is going to sell them.
If you want Switch Lites all three colors are supringly available new at MSRP online from Gamestop without having to buy a game bundle, but they're not dockable. Probably the better system if you're absolutely sure you only want to play handheld, because the full fat Switch is kind of bulky and needs a case. But there are a few games much better on the bigscreen than handheld, such as Super Mario Odyssey which really uses motion controls well with split joycons or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that takes a hatchet to resolution when handheld, which makes it look more like a Gamecube game than a Switch one.
It's a pretty cool system though and I like it both handheld and on the bigscreen. Really strong game library for a lot of different tastes too.

Thanks yeah I want the full dockable system so I can play it on the TV. Talked to the GameStop guys today and they said they supply the website first, so that's how they're all getting to scalpers so fast. Would be nice if they reserved some for in-person purchase only but I guess there's no real incentive to do that.

Scalpers have bots checking Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, Newegg, etc to snatch them up the second they're available to purchase online. They don't usually buy the expensive Gamestop bundles though, so that's where you'll have a chance. The fact that Gamestop hasn't made any of these bundles available for a month probably means they're not getting shit from Nintendo.

Bought mine back in March just as everything was shutting down. By then, they were sold out online and at every store I went to. Tried my luck at the most obvious spot - my local Gamestop - as a last ditch attempt to find one. Lady said they were out, but there were some boxes behind her and I asked what they were. No lie they were a box of 5 Switches. :lol

When in March did you get it? Just curious since I think Nintendo warned everyone in February that their supply chain was completely fucked by COVID in China and that shortages were 100% coming. I feel kind of guilty having one and not even playing it much since I have been playing Persona 5 Royal and various Yakuza games all year on PS4 instead (especially since I have a holy grail hackable Switch with Atmosphere on it :lol). Though Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is next in my backlog and I'll play that on Switch.

Have you played Super Mario Odyssey? Best platformer since Super Mario World IMO. Then Super Mario Maker 2 is probably the second best platformer since, judging only from the single player levels that came with it since my Switch isn't exactly online capable. :lol
Yoshi's Crafted World is a surprisingly good platformer with a hilarious art style. It's not Super Mario Maker 2 quality or anything, but still a lot of fun to play handheld. Ni No Kuni is supposed to have an awesome story if you're in the mood for an RPG, but it's also on PS3, PS4, XLOL1, and PC. I really gotta play that and Dragon Quest XI in the next few months. Persona 5 Scramble looks to have a really interesting story in an action game / RPG hybrid, though you have to be able to read Japanese. :lol The demo's story was pretty cool though when I played it back in early February.

I ended up getting an older game, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, yesterday. It's a 2D platformer with a semi-explorable overhead map screen to get to the different 2D chapters.
So far it's pretty great. It's not as good as Mario Maker 2 but it's at least as good as DK Tropical Freeze. Great graphics and control. And the overhead map portion has various puzzles which breaks up
the 2D stuff. Also, unlike DKTF, you don't have limited lives so you're always started at your last checkpoint no matter how many times you die. And each 2D chapter seems fairly long with plenty to do.
Also, it gives you the option to go to the final chapter and beat the game whenever you want. But it does seem impossible without the extra stuff you earn from getting through a lot of the chapters.
Anyway, if you like 2D platforming, this one is excellent (so far).

Yeah, lots of leaks about a big pack of old Mario games coming out for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros coming out on NES. Though if you want Mario64, there is actually a really nice PC port of it now. The ones I really want are Galaxy 1 & 2 since they look amazing upscaled to 1080p in Dolphin, but Dolphin kind of sucks for the motion controls so I'd still rather play them at 480p on my Wii when I do.

I'm hoping Bravely Default II is awesome... forgot about that one and really enjoyed the first on 3DS (highly underrated handheld btw, especially if you like jrpg). But man if you don't GAF about Animal Crossing or don't know Japanese (Persona 5 Scramble is awesome but not localized yet for the west), then 2020 has been nothing but old game remasters (Bioshock, Catherine) and cut down 3rd party games (The Outer Worlds, Doom Eternal). If it wasn't for Shin Megami Tensei V I'd probably have been looking at selling the thing to put towards a PS5.
Speaking of not being able to find Switch for sale, you can't find XBox One nor PS4 either. Best Buy is sold out of XBones and there isn't a Gamestop within 100 miles that has one. Who would have ever seen XBox One having no supply to meet demand?

Oh man, I don't sell consoles. That's a golden rule for me. There have been too many times over the decades where I get an itch to play an old game and break out the console. Last year I had a craving to play the Ace Combat games and binged all of them on my PS2 for a month.

Yeah I probably shouldn't since my Switch is one of the holy grail Switches: ie, one of the hackable models from before Nintendo patched the fusee gelee exploit in hardware. There is nothing they can do to stop custom firmware on those models. And then CFW Switch makes the ultimate retro gaming handheld as it can run NES, PC Engine, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Sega CD, PS1, and most N64 pretty well, as well as oldschool arcade games. I swear my most played Switch game is the 1987 Shinobi arcade game through Retroarch. :lol
Speaking of PS2, have you heard of Free McBoot? If you buy a Free McBoot memory card (they're like $10 on ebay/amazon last time I checked) then you can run games off a hard drive (on a PS2 fat) or shared from your PC over ethernet (both PS2 fat and slim). It allows me to play a lot of Japanese games that I would be region locked out of if using discs. Plus PS2 lasers and lenses are so fragile.

No shit? That sounds pretty sweet; might have to look that up. Is there a speed difference when using the ethernet? Faster or slower than disc?
Can't tell you which is faster. I have probably played about 50 different games and the only two that gave me any problems were Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (had stutter during full motion video cutscenes, otherwise was flawless) and Gran Turismo 4, which I could not get working period over ethernet. Oh well, I just bought a new copy of Nocturne and I don't really GAF about GT4. Could just be a bad rom too. But if you get a game that has trouble with FMV over ethernet or doesn't work right you could always just burn it to DVD and play it off that then. There is a program called ESR typically installed with a Free McBoot memory card that will let you play burned DVDs.
Look up Free McBoot, OPL, and ESR on MrMario2011's youtube channel if you're interested. I wouldn't recommend the method he uses for making a Free McBoot memory card though unless you want to use a hard drive. The hard drive though is a big can of worms, because
(1) the official adapter only supports IDE drives, those old ass motherfuckers with the fat ribbon cables, and not all work
(2) the Chinese knockoff adapter that supports SATA drives sucks. Mine fit so bad I literally had to press and hold steady into the back of my PS2 for a few minutes while making a Free McBoot memory card from the Free HDBoot I had installed to the hard drive. Others have had better luck with it though.
(3) there are adapters you can buy to use a microSD card for storage on a fat PS2 through the IDE port on the network adapter, but its a real rabbit hole to jump into.
I forgot there is one other way to do it over ethernet: if you have say a Raspberry Pi, you can just connect it to the PS2 via an ethernet cable and share the games off there. I actually have a Pi but haven't tried it to see how well it works.

Even before the pandemic 2020 has been such a dogshit year for Switch, at least in the US. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is about the only good game to come out in the West this year. Same. I've been massively looking forward to Mario remakes, more Zelda titles on the switch, etc. The last all new mario kart was released in 2014 for fucks sake. They need to get on the ball.

I have been putting off playing Galaxy 1 & 2 precisely because of how amazing the games look at 1080p on Dolphin but how shitty they control on Dolphin vs on a real Wii. So fuck man I have been excited about getting 1080p versions I could play with the joycons' motion controls.
I hope if they do they don't take the motion controls out though. There is actually an official port of Super Mario Galaxy 1 to the Nvidia Shield (China only though) but it got rid of motion controls.

Even before the pandemic 2020 has been such a dogshit year for Switch, at least in the US. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is about the only good game to come out in the West this year. In Japan it's a little better with Persona 5 Scramble and then in October Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, but what a shitshow outside of Japan for the system this year.
Hmm...maybe I'll give that a shot. Tokyo Mirage that is.

I like the idea of liking them. But end up not usually playing them through.

Never played through any of them. I have a few hours of Galaxy and it's amazing, but stopped once I heard it was coming the Switch since the game looks so great at 1080p vs the 480p the original Wii runs.

Ocarina at 60 fps would be awesome. When I go try to replay it now it's horrible at 20 fps on a modern TV, though probably a lot better on an old CRT. 3DS version ain't bad though, but I'd still rather replay it on a bigscreen. I'm guessing the three Zelda All-Stars games in a similar package would be Ocarina, Twilight Princess, and hopefully Wind Waker instead of Skyward Sword. As much as I love A Link Between Worlds, that game wouldn't feel the same without the 3D effect (it was really well implemented if you had a New 3DS).

I'm with you. I don't mind the 3DS version but it wasn't the remake I wanted. It just feels wrong playing it on a handheld. I need that shit on the big screen. I don't think they'll add TP and WW to it, as they were already released on the Wii U. They've been dragging their feet on releasing it on the Switch...if they do release those 3 as a bundle, I'd be supremely irritated. I don't think they'd do a similar package for that reason, but if they do, I think Skyward Sword will be tossed in.
I do have A Link Between Worlds, but I only have the new 2ds. It was cheaper and I didn't feel the need to get the new 3ds. A shame, but it's all good to me. I still enjoyed the game. If I see a used new 3ds on sale for cheap somewhere, I'll probably pick it up.

Nah don't bother with New 3DS then if you have already played A Link Between Worlds. I have only found 3 games where the 3D effect is really impressive. Namely, Mario Kart 7, A Link Between Worlds, and Mario Golf: World Tour. Only game I have found where the 3D is bad and I turn it off is one of the Senran Kagura games because the effect looked like shit, and I guess I turn it off in Bravely Default if I'm playing outside and exploring a dark dungeon, though I leave the 3D on if I'm indoors.

I got lucky and saw this trailer like 10 mins after it debuted. You better your ass I'm gonna get it. I never played the first Hyrule Warriors but this one looks less like a sequel to that game and more like a prequel to BOTW. Looks like the exact same game engine as well. I always wanted to see more of what happened the first time around and was quite disappointed when the DLC didn't deliver. But I never dreamed that they'd make a full blown game of it. So yeah, gonna buy it. I'm gonna look for a cheap used copy of the first one too just to get a feel for things.

IDK, when I play Mario 64 if I have to make a hard jump or a sequence of jumps I feel like I'm fucking around the camera until I get it into a half decent state, slowly make the jump, fuck with the camera again for the next jump, and so on. It has the makings of a great game but the control scheme just totally fucks it up. Thankfully I have a hacked Switch so I can play the better version derived from the PC port that has widescreen, 60 fps, mod support, and modern dual stick control.

There is a Dynasty Warriors style Zelda game coming out in the next month or so which looks really good. Koei Tecmo did a great job making a Persona universe Dynasty Warriors inspired game early this year in Persona 5 Scramble (Japan-only though), so I'm expecting their Zelda spinoff to be pretty impressive too. Bravely Default II sounds like it might not make 2020 though. And outside of Persona 5 Scramble (which is Japan only), not a lot interesting on Switch this year other than remasters. Super Mario 64 is nice as a handheld game and Super Mario Galaxy really looks great at 1080p. Unless you're into Animal Crossing, 2020 has been a horrendous year for Switch gaming. Nothing like the epic year of 2019.

Luigi's Mansion is in my top handful of Switch games. It' got great reviews but it seems like it's overlooked at times.

I know... was just using Persona as an example of how well Koei Tecmo was able to adapt their Warriors series another gaming universe recently and thus why there might be good reason to be excited over the upcoming Hyrule Warriors game:

Damn, SciresM, the guy responsible for hacking the Switch, says he found in a firmware dump indications there will be an upcoming Switch with an OLED screen and a 4k media encoder. God the OLED in the original Vitas looks glorious so an OLED of the size of the full-size Switch's screen, especially if they can really shrink the bezels, will be glorious. Of course this New Switch will probably be the new performance target for new games just like the New 3DS was for 3DS games so old-school Switch will probably play new games even shittier than it has the last year. :pctoss
Damn if Shin Megami Tensei V needs the new Switch to perform well guess I'll just sell my hacked Switch for as much as I can and buy the new one and live with high Nintendo game prices from here on out.

It's just underclocked to save battery and prevent heat problems. Maxwell should totally be able to do 720p at good perf. The tegra used there is clocked at 1 GHz, and NVidia uses the same tegra SOC in other products at 2GHz.
That'll get better with both hardware design iterations and shrinking process. IIRC, the hardware already went through one revision.
Also, unlike Apple that designs their own Arm cores, NVidia is using stock cores, so that's another area where they could improve.

Wasn't the original chip in the Switch the same thing as in the Nvidia Shield but at half the clockspeed? I gotta look up how far you can push clocks on the OG Switch after hacking it. See if that gets me anywhere in Hyrule Warriors for example.

yep, that's what I'm saying. Switch is 1 GHz, Shield is 2 GHz. There was a revision on the Tegra X1 later down the road (X1+) that gave the Switch some extra battery life. That switched the process from 20nm to 16nm.
Past that, you really need to switch to a smaller process. Tegra X2 is Pascal, but still a 16nm process. Xavier, the one after that, uses 12nm and Volta.
There's also an Ampere version in the works, but I don't know what process that uses. If they can get down to 7nm, they can really push the envelope, but then price becomes an issue.

Though Nvidia was doing Ampere on 8nm, but read it's kind of a shitty process compared to the TSMC 7nm that AMD uses. Way beyond my pay grade though. :lol

Both NVidia and Intel have been poor when it comes to process size reduction. To the point I think Intel is going to start outsourcing to TSMC.
That's really the name of the game in the power/performance game. Not that important for desktop, but for something like a portable console it's certainly a thing.

I thought Nvidia just couldn't get anything produced on TSMC 7nm because AMD and Apple had bought up all the capacity. Only Nvidia's really high-end high margin shit like GA100 got done on TSMC 7nm. Hard to believe how much Intel is struggling with 10nm when they used to be the gold standard of fabs. But haven't really done shit to improve IPC since Skylake.

It costs a lot of money to improve the process. I can't talk much about Intel since we just had a presentation with them and I know some things I can't share, but we all know they fell behind quite a bit, not just on process, but also never figured out a true mobile strategy, and it's clear Arm's growth has been hurting them. Funnily enough, laptops is probably their best consumer market right now.

I want to play this game back in the day, but the motion controls were so bad, I couldn't do it. Sure as fuck wasn't going to break out the Wii and try to play it again on 15 year old motion control tech.

No...I never played it on Wii U. So it’s all new to me. Holds up great. I’m at the final castle boss fight. I didn’t spend a lot of time looking for stars but ended up with enough for all the extra levels. Not sure if I’ll go back and get the rest or just move on to Bowser’s Fury.
Are you actually switching characters? I ended up just using Mario all the way.
Also, do you know if collecting all the stars and/or stamps give you extra levels?
Edit: Thought the castle stage was the end but now I’m at the Bowser World.

I already got Skyward Sword on pre order, pretty much the weekend it was announced. BOTW 2 looks good and they finally got a date for it; I don't mind them taking 5 years to make it. They added an extra couple years to the OG and it was well worth the wait to be sure. I might get the game and watch as well; shit would serve me well at work

Nintendo just announced an OLED Switch. Screen goes up in size from 6.2 inches to 7 inches (sounds small, but it's a 27% increase in screen area), internal storage increased from 32GB to 64GB, will finally have a decent stand for tabletop mode, and price is $350 for the new system. Comes out October 8th.

Damn man, you don't like 2D games handheld? Fucking Super Mario 3D World handheld got me through the February blackouts. Even early 3D shit like Mario 64 is awesome handheld. Super Mario Maker 2 even moreso. Then y'all might laugh, but Mario Tennis Aces handheld is a whole lot of fun when you have 5-10 minutes to kill. Or playing retro Genesis, NES, SNES, and arcade games on it. You never got into the Game Boy, GBA, DS, or 3DS libraries? I got my 2DS XL for games like that; everything on the switch is stuff that I play docked. I don't take my switch anywhere and I don't gotta sit in the hall to play it, like the switch trailer shows. Since Nintendo is going away from a dedicated handheld like the DS family and into hybrids like the switch, I can't rule out I'd get a switch lite or something down the road. They need to up their virtual console game to Wii U levels for that to happen. Too many good games that still aren't on the switch.
I'm thinking they're balls deep in making their next console so if that one is coming on the horizon and the switch lite/oled falls in price AND gets a kick ass library? I'd buy the fuck out of that.

I went out and bought 2 pro controllers the next day after opening up the Switch. I hated the feel of the joycons as soon as I started playing. And for me, they were even worse in hand held mode. They just seemed flimsy and I'd been used to playing Vita which had great controls. Putting the right joystick below the buttons really frustrated me.

I suppose I can see that. My problem is that I broke two fingers on my right hand a long time ago and the older I get, the harder it is to bend them. But also, after playing games for so long, the pro controller just feels natural.
