Do not care
Remember when everyone laughed at me for saying I'd take Boris Diaw over GS David Lee? It's not all about scoring, man. Some players can be special without having to score a bunch. I'm placing my stake on Fathead. He's my new Diaw. He'll rot in Memphis just like Diaw was rotting in Charlotte, but he will thrive here. Have to match, tbh.
Maybe he comes back in is 30s Tbh seems a about right

I mean, this is not an offer that took RC by surprise tbh.
Kyle started all season. Someone was going to give him an offer sheet. It only took so long because the RFA market this season was horrendous bc teams don't really have money to spare. RC was just hoping this market worked in his favor and Kyle picked up that QO. Glad for him that he will get paid. :tu

uh, this is all kyle doing due diligence on his own worth. The only window into kawhi is when they match/don't match. As others have said, without kwahi we have no SF.

She was right about him given how much money he’s making. I mean, Memphis isn’t above making bad deals, but they like him to offer that kind of money, so maybe she saw the same stuff the Grizzlies see. I doubt the Spurs match but they may have no choice given the market and the importance of that position.

Could these recent moves be a way of clearing the way for Kawhi's possible return?
PATFO has stayed firm that they want to repair the relationship. I will only believe in a trade when I see it bc they have remained really steadfast in trying to re-sign him. It may come down to them paying Kawhi the supermax and turning over this page. It will be really awkward for a little bit, but just like Lamarcus last season, him balling all season and having a great MVP season will definitely put this behind.
That being said, that is a dream scenario, which I think Spurs are still hoping to achieve. They may end up in other scenarios. This thing with Kawhi isn't over.

I'm a big fan, but tough to say if the Spurs should match with the uncertainty surrounding a potential Kawhi trade and what they're going to get in return..
He can be a very valuable contributor on a team that fits well around him, but I don't think this is the team, they haven't figured out a way to properly utilize his offense IMO..I also hate the fit with Murray in the SL, as well, along with the Spurs overall need for shooting..
He'll be great for Memphis if the Spurs don't match, though, expecting a breakout season..

He doesn't have to be an All-Star..he's already a top-tier defensive player, he just needs to figure out an offensive niche and/or find the right fit..that may never happen, of course, but it's worth a shot..
You have to consider that a team like Memphis isn't going to attract star free agents, they need to look for potential in the middle of the list instead..

Besides, unless there is a trade the Spurs really can't replace him otherwise. They are hard capped... They would lose him and just be left with an empty space... It all hinges on what they expect Kiwi will do and how confident they are he will be healthy all season and not need an above replacement level player to take his minutes the next time his quad is sore tbh.

The thing that the stats don't capture is how scared Kyle Anderson is on offense. He's the opposite of someone like Horry. And sure, he's going to give you solid numbers and be a servicable player but he's never going to be someone you can count on during crunch time and that's actually something you need out of role players you put around stars. He doesn't need to be Robert Horry, but he needs to not be the opposite of Robert Horry and that isn't ever going to change.
I don't want players who are scared. Good luck in Memphis.

People comparing this contract to Mills miss exactly how Mills has the most valuable skill in the NBA - shooting. Kyle does not. Thats the bottom line on why Patty got more. Using Pattys contract to justify matching this one is ridiculous. If Kyle could shoot then this would be a bargain. But he can't and he's also shown that he's scared as shit when it comes to open shots so no thanks.

Right, his game is not about athleticism and he's been playing basketball for over a decade by this point so why is he scared to shoot? That is't something you develop. You are either not scared, or you are, and Kyle is. That's a dealbreaker for me. You don't mature out of that. He's had 4 years with Chip and he's STILL scared AF.

Because truely good 3 point shooters in the NBA aren't very common. Defensive players who can't shoot are far more common than good 3 point shooters. Good defenders who can't shoot don't really see the court because they kill spacing in a league where spacing is the most important thing right now.

True, he has a longer track record but his shot hasn't been the same since his shoulder surgery yet, they still dished out 50M to a player with a broken shot.
Defensive Analytics likes Kyle Anderson and the Spurs like defensive analytics. I don't want him back but the Spurs won't see that as a bad contract and could easily match it seeing as how the only other SF on the team wants to get the hell out of here.

Anderson is not a spot shooter, he needs to have the ball in his hands as a secondary playmaker if he's ever going to figure out an offensive role at this level..a team like Memphis would give him that opportunity..
Part of that is on him, of course, as his lack of aggressiveness is painful to watch and he often plays too scared(although that seems to be the case for many when they play for the Spurs)..
I don't see him ever unlocking anything with the Spurs, though..it's just a poor fit with this roster, particularly Murray..

You're not going against my case that shooting is the most valuable skill in the game. In retrospect, the Mills contract was an overpay. But he only gets that much because he's a shooter. Shooters routinely get overpaid. Players who can't shoot typically make less.

When a player who is young and first getting playing time he is going to play to show off his strengths which for Anderson was his pg abilities. Just like Diaw he can develop the offensive portion of his game because he can fit in so well with high bball IQ, passing, length, and handles.

Spurs must match. This is not a bad contract. Around 9 mil a year. That's around 9% of the cap, and could get down to 7% by the end of his contract. He is solid on D. Can play the 4 and 3. Doesn't need calls for him. If that corner 3 improves, the contract becomes a steal. Its not really a gamble. It's just common sense to match. If the spurs don't match, they thinking for next off season free agencies.

I don't see the Diaw comparison outside of just being unselfish Spurs..
I think Anderson definitely needs to be a PF-first to unlock his offensive potential IMO..I can't really think of a comparison for him, don't really think there is on, considering his unique traits(particularly his forehead and slow speed)..
IIRC, when I put his numbers in my database, the most similar statistical comparisons of his past season were Kirilenko and Anthony Mason:lol

Shooting is the most valuable skill in basketball and it's not even close.
Shooting is becoming saturated across every position. Its not as valuable as it once was. Its much easier to find sheer shooting. Versatility on offense, versatility on D are two skills that are more valuable. Also perimeter defense is more valuable imo.
The only reason Mills got that dumbass deal is because Pop & RC, not only overvalued culture and undervalued their own prospects ( DeJounte, Derrick, Forbes), but they also misread the market early in summer of 17'. They used the summer of 16' to gauge Mills' deal -- which was when all the dumb teams set millions on fire w the Mosgov, Deng, Parsons, Delly, Noah, Gasol deald.

i wouldnt have been opposed to something like 2/18, especially if we're moving leonard. but it doesn't make sense to pay him starter/sixth man money for 4 years
Is $9 million starter/6th man money? If he's capable at either of those two roles then that is dirt cheap when considering the cap is $101 million and is supposed to jump to $109 and $116 million in year 2 and 3 of this deal.
It's more than I expected but not an outlandish deal.

SAS is going to match. Why:
The Belinelli deal makes us hard capped (because of the exception we used). The Spurs have $105 million in salary (including Beli, but not our RFAs) and are ~$20 million below the hard-cap threshold.
We have 2 exceptions left to use: $2.7M (leftover from the room midlevel used to sign Beli) and $3.4 million (biannual). Other than that we can sign Vet Min deals, first round picks, and our RFA's (Bertans, Forbes and Kyle).
The Roster:
LMA, Gasol
Gay, (Kawhi),
Green, (Manu)
Belinelli, White, Walker, Paul
DJ, Mills
10 bodies (if they keep Paul) and 2 maybes. 15 roster spots. We have space to match Kyle and we would be trying to find a replacement for less than $3.5 M annually. It makes too much sense to match...

A good way to look at it. It’s really a 3 year / $28mm deal heading into next offseason, which will be moveable worst case. The only reason not to is if the Spurs plan on making a huge push in FA next year, which would also mean moving Mills and Gasol.

One good reason not to match is that last year it killed us having two starters (Murray and Kyle) that flat out could not shoot. Now I don't think Murray is going anywhere at least as of right now, so that leaves Kyle the odd man out. Plus it's not like the other starters were great 3 point shooters (Mills/Green were blah, Aldridge shoots them low volume.) There's a good chance Murray/Mills/Green/Aldridge are in the starting lineup again so I think it's going to continue to kill the offense if we trot out Kyle as well. I think on a good team with shooters Kyle makes the team better and is good at what he does. But with us I'm not sure how he fits.

Anderson is not a starter he is a decent bench player but nothing special if he was not drafted by the Spurs he would probably not be in the NBA tbh. But I wish him the best at this point I am pretty sure Metu or Livio will take his place.
I guess Memphis needs to play even slower?
You've heard of the "seven seconds or less" offense (SSOL)? Grizz are building the "seven points or less" per quarter offense.

You realize those offenses thrive by having shooters all around the floor, right?
Houston took it to an extreme, with only Capella, Black and Nene (of players with 100+ MP) NOT taking at least 40% of their FGA from deep. And of those guys, almost everyone shot it above 35% from deep besides the ageless Joe Johnson and Bobby Brown.
The Warriors are in a similar boat. Livingston is one of their few non-centers who doesn’t shoot threes but takes plenty of shots from midrange and close. The only other non-big without a high 3pt attempted % was Casspi who got cut.

Anderson doesn't impact the signing of the other guys unless you mean a roster spot
He would be matched using Bird Rights. Milutinov can be signed with either the rookie exception or a portion of the MLE. What's left after Marco might not be enough anyway.
Metu or LJC etc can be had for the minimum,
They could theoretically sign all of them all parties willing (including a 2 way for LJC)

This is the team's best chance to get back to what helped them get their second wind in 2012-2014: Getting rotation players to sign cheap second contracts. Yes, ideally, Kyle's either a four or a three playing next to a perimeter-oriented four (like Bertans or Ryan Anderson). He's not a great fit on a roster that will feature Gay and potentially Kawhi. He and Bertans playing with LMA and whatever All-Star the Spurs apparently have the ability to acquire may well be very good, though. They can make Kyle work if they make the right moves with him in mind.

I'm ok with matching.
After all the deal is fine for his role on the team...and he's gonna make less money than Gay.
The contracts over what player's worth are Mills and Pau ones, but were given fo different reasons (Mills being underpaidn in past contracts and Pau showing trust in the Management when he renunced his guaranteed money for let the Spurs try to acquire a star).
For the people that say Kyle is poor fit with Murray 'cause lack of shooting, i say that Murray is spending the summer triyng to improve his shot (hope in same outcoming of Kiwhi) and that anyhow Kyle is a good fit with Alridge and his under rytmh style of play...he has obvious defensive and passing skills, he knows the system and his teammates love to play with him.
I also like the idea that Memphis has set not only his market value but also the kind of teams that are interested in signing him...so he could be a trade asset not a lot of time from today, considering he's just 24 (will be 28 at the end of his contract, alias in his full prime).

If it was almost anyone else, yes it makes sense to match, but better players than Kyle can be found very cheap. Including the minimum!
Especially in a market that's about to dry up dramatically.
I just don't like any kind of commitment to a player who is so weak in certain areas that winning basketball in today's environment becomes way too complicated with him on the floor.
Sure the contract could be moved one day, but maybe it won't be and that's a bad thing.

Spurs may have to match. Spurs value 'corporate knowledge'. That's why they signed Mills and kept Manu. That's why they signed Belinelli.
With this roster:
The Roster:
LMA, Gasol
Gay,
Green, Belinelli, White, Walker, Paul
DJ, Mills
Mills was signed because he's the 'glue guy'. You need more 'glue guys' in this team, Anderson is the other one.
Green is a glue guy but he doesn't know what to do in the court.
White has potential to be a leader but he's too young.
Gasol wants to be a leader, but I don't think he relates well with the other players.
LMA, Gay, DJ are more like Tony Parker types, more selfish than leaders.
Kawhi.... it's obvious now to everyone that he can never be a leader. Honestly, Kawhi fits perfect with the way Spurs do things. His family however is the big problem.
I don't think Spurs will make the playoffs with just Mills as the glue guy.

So basically the Grizzlies are the most incompetent franchise in the NBA.
They paid $153M to a complimentary player coming off a mediocre season and missing the last 2 months of the season because of injury.
They paid $94M to a injured roleplayer coming off a mediocre season.
They just got through paying 3 years $21M to Brandan Wright, an injury prone lob guy with no skillset. A type of player you can find in the G-League for cheap.
They paid 3 years $15M to Ben McLemore who was never good and may not even be a rotation player on this shitty roster next season. Serious what does McLemore actually do?
Now they're trying to pay $37M to a guy who can't score or shoot and isn't even an elite defender.
I swear that the Grizzlies are so dumb that if they had enough capspace they would gladly play Marcus Smart the $16M a year that he's asking for.

I hope the Spurs match, I think Kyle will keep getting (slightly) better. and Spurs need to maintain at least a little corporate knowledge intact, what with TP/Manu/Green/Leonard/Gasol/hopefully Mills all leaving this summer or next

I will let him go, he's not a bad all around player but i Don't see him as 10m/year player. If we pay him that contract that means he could be a kind of sixth man for us, i'm not sure about that.
For the SF spot we have Gay and Leonard ( or another guy via trade).
SAGirl

It is a good deal for him too.

What cap space would we have left to go after a replacement SF in the event we decline to match? If it is as little as I think it is, this basically forces our hand to match with bird rights. Unless you are in the camp of going full tank/rebuild mode, as I don’t think there is anyone on the market that will replace Kyle with the space we have left to work with(Besides Kawhi obviously).

the problem actually is that we have kawhi, for example if we have kawhi or ingram via trade i don't see the idea of matching Kyle because we'll have a SF starter and a better SF/PF with Gay.
Offcourse we don't have the money for a good SF with only 2.5 million approximatively of the MLE and 3.4 of th bi annual exception.

The last year is partially guaranteed. Anyways, the MLE for 3-4 years for Anderson is not a bad contract. The cap is now >$100 mil, so of course role players are being extended larger amounts.

There's always room for 6'9" to 6'10" tall players with handles who defend in today's NBA. Anderson does a little bit of everything. He's a good role player and this is a role player contract in 2018. If the Spurs opt not to match I think that's a good indicator that they are moving quickly into rebuilding (the other so far is letting TP walk as opposed to keeping him around for a couple years for small $ as Murray's backup) in life after Leonard.

I’m pretty indifferent to this. I’d lean towards not matching and maintaining as much financial flexibility into next offseason as possible. Spurs may need to take on a bad contract to get a good pick and shot at a new superstar.
This is a solid role player contract, but you can always buy solid role players on the market. Figure out who your franchise cornerstones are going to be first, then spend to fill role players in around them.
But not a bad decision to match either, if they go that way. Kyle has value. As a bonus he’s from my old neighborhood in Jersey so I’ll always be a fan.

Realistically, there's no scenario where it makes sense to match, tbh... he's just about above D-League talent, needs the ball a lot to be involved, and his ceiling is bench player at best.
Unless something magical happens in a Kawhi trade, the Spurs are unlikely to be competitive this season, there's no sense in committing long term $10m a year on this kind of talent.
He made sense on a rookie deal, as a project, to learn his ceiling. Better use that roster spot on a new project, or bringing in somebody from Europe on a cheaper/shorter deal.

Danny would probably leave if he could find a suitor willing to pay him, and DJ most likely won't be here beyond free agency. Tough to guage happiness. Would be a nice, low-pressure opportunity on a lottery team..
Exactly. They brought in Parsons to be a point forward. They want creation from that spot. Parsons was injured they brought in Tyreke to help fill the playmaking void but Marc/JJJ/Kyle would be a very solid defensive unit and they can have offensive tools.

1 and 2 year deals retain flexibility. With Gasol contract and green opting in we weren’t going to be players in free agency.
They could have easily traded Green and Gasol if they wanted cap space. 2 year deals aren’t flexibility. Beli being on a 2 year deal shows they wanted a player.

You don’t sign Beli and bring back Rudy if you are thinking rebuild.
That was in place before free agency opened up. As the situation with Leonard went from bad to worse, perhaps the plan has changed...

Lol. Go to his Twitter page. He reps the spurs proudly.
I'm sure his dad's motivations in saying "larger role" had to do with securing his son a larger contract.
I have zerodoubts that if the Spurs match he'll happily continue being a part of the organization.
It's people like you that make fandom maddening. First , you don't know shit. Second, you're quick to criticize. Third, you're slow in giving credit.
Tl;dr--get bent.
He average almost 27 minutes per game. Don't blame the Spurs organization because Kyle was afraid to shoot. The Spurs gave him every opportunity for a larger role and he didn't want it bad enough.

No way the Spurs match. Memphis' contract is fully guaranteed AND includes a 15% trade kicker - making his contract pretty much impossible to move if we want roster flexibility. Let him walk.

I don’t think anything with Leonard was not expected..Beli is not good enough to honor some agreement if you needed to pivot IMO

They're both on short deals though. This Kyle's deal would put him past LMA's contract, IIRC.

And you’re fine with him starting last year ? You think we could a top 3-4 team in the West with him starting ? I like him but i’m not sure about the level he will reach.
We were a top of the bracket team up until the moment they learned Kawhi want coming back. The team lost concentration and a lot of games after that.

No, it changed from Pop and Kawhi will talk things out after the season to the trade demand, intent of only signing with the Lakers next offseason, and the continued holdout nonsense.

Kyle is a good kid and his is making millions of dollars doing something he loves no need to be upset if he moved to Memphis. But the fact remains he was never starting material and add to that fact is that he was scarred to shoot the ball and never developed a 3 ball shot which he desperately needed makes him replaceable.
The Kawhi saga has probably made RC and Pop totally rethink what the direction they are going to take going forward but in today's NBA you need shooters and this is not Kyles game.

He's a terrible playoff performer. Time to send this soft, mentally weak coward packing. All the best, loser!

2 year deals are flexibility. It’s still short term and after a year he’s an expiring contract and a known commodity

Lol, nice try. Case in point... **You** just criticized PATFO over this. Now in the turn of 1 post you flipped to criticizing KA?
Pick one, schizo.

Your reading comprehension is the problem here. I was responding to your reply. What does that tell you? Don't act like he wanted to leave for a larger role. He was given every opportunity for a larger role and he didn't want it bad enough.
