CosmicJewboy over here. As far as I understand it this $1.5 trillion dollar is a short term collateralized loan which will be paid back WITH interest. The Fed only has the charter to give these loans out to banks that can provide collateral so it's not as egregious as people are making out.

Btw to respond to the rest of this, call it what you want but it’s still a form of socialism and it definitely constitutes relief.
Meanwhile Congress is gridlocked on any potential legislation for paid sick leave assistance.
Our government is effectively set up where the fed can unilaterally provide quick and significant relief to corporate America but our 2-senators per state bullshit makes it impossible for real relief to ever happen.

agreed
but the hope was that in this chaos caused by trump/putin
that the lower classes would miraculously rally and swipe some temporary power to shake things up...
while everyone was trembling and paralyzed and crying for a return to the status quo- it would have been inspiring to see the terror in the establishment- if only temporary.
The game is rigged of course and those at the top are going to always protect their position.
Instead - we are tucking our tails between our legs and pinning our hopes on a safe old softie-

plenty wrong with it. the stock market isn't "the economy" no matter how much he pretended it was. and he doesnt have much control over it. makes it foolish to claim credit for it. but if you really want to play that game, almost all the growth we saw in the DOW came during his first year, before he got any major policy through. his tax bill only became effective january 2018. not much movement since then
its a stupid game to play, but if you want to play the game, you cant just quit when things look bad. even ignoring the corono dip, you have a virtually horizontal line from 2018 through late 2019

Separately, fresh data coming out of China showed the economy has been hit harder than expected by the coronavirus outbreak.
Retail sales plunged 20.5% in the January-to-February period from a year earlier, much worse than the forecast 0.8% rise by analysts polled by Reuters, according to the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
Industrial output also fell 13.5% during the same period, while fixed asset investment plunged 24.5%, both widely missing estimates.
A data point from Norway: my brother in law has a business – supplier to the fish and meat industry, selling everything from gloves to machines – everything. A significant portion of what he sells comes from China. Normally when he reorders the delivery time is three months, now it’s year. A year.
He’s in contact with colleagues and associates in the food business and it’s the same for them. So what happens when the butchers, slaughterhouses, fish farms go empty for gloves, masks, aprons, etc? Which is definitely going to happen. They’ll have to shut down. According to my brother in law, the factories that supply him from China, when they open again, and they may already be in the process of reopening, their first priority is to resupply China, and that may take a year. Europe is going to have to wait.
One last point – my brother in law is already getting calls from want to be customers who are out of supplies, and he’s turning them down. He has to.
Today, it is not Wall Street financial institutions, but companies in a variety of industries that are stressed, as a simultaneous supply and demand shock means they need to tap credit lines to pay their bills. With flights halted, supply chains disrupted and the consumer economy gutted, companies are trying to stockpile cash, whether they need it immediately or not.
It’s one thing for the aircraft manufacturer Boeing to draw down its entire $13.8bn credit line. It’s another for multiple big corporations to draw theirs at the same time. Still, as a recent Credit Suisse report pointed out, “we now have a global banking system where all major banks have to pre-fund 30-day outflows” with high-quality liquid asset portfolios. This is one important reason why these corporate funding stresses haven’t caused a real time banking crisis in the way that the 2008 subprime crisis did.
Consider just the airlines. Delta, the strongest large US carrier, is already making barely-coded requests for a bailout. As our Clive observed by e-mail:
I can’t see any international travel on any sort of scale for the next six months — possibly a year — save for repatriation flights laid on by governments. The entire passenger aviation industry will have to be nationalised and put into a state of suspended animation. Bilateral arrangements may start to creep back in on a very limited basis where there’s large and largely unstoppable flows of people by other modalities (US to Canada and Mexico, U.K. to France and the RoI — that sort of thing).
I will stop posting quotes there.
The data is all bad, and it will get worse.
One final thing:
Health and the economy are closely linked. The correlation between per-capita GDP and health (life expectancy) is essentially perfect. If the covid-19 pandemic leads to a global economy collapse, many more lives will be lost than covid-19 would ever be able to claim. (12/12)

The slow, too small, and too narrow sought-after responses don’t merely reflect being in a fog of information gaps. The speed and aggressivenesses of the lockdowns, and their drastic impact make the broad outlines all too clear. Our supposed leaders are in a fog of denial. They cannot fathom that so much of what they had come to accept as the normal and proper operation of our system will crumble if radical action isn’t taken soon, yet that very radical action will also result in changes they deem inconceivable, or worse, aesthetically unacceptable.
As we found out in the financial crisis, in tightly coupled systems, events can propagate across the various elements too quickly for anyone to intervene and limit the damage. The relentless drive for highly efficient systems, from just-in-time manufacturing to radically limiting inpatient time so as to reduce the number of hospital beds per capita, have created fragile systems that are now being tested to destruction. And we are learning, to our collective detriment, how many are wanting.

The Petro-states are going to get hammered. Saudi-Russian production war in the middle of a massive downturn in demand...
Democrats won't need to implement a fracking ban to stop the practice. Perversely, they will have to start flaring all the natgas they are producing.
This is looking like a negative feedback loop that makes 2009 seem mild. That was just an asset bubble. This looks like an unraveling.

This is why I’d rather see people who feel fine continue to travel and go to restaurants even if it means this gets dragged out longer.
While it’s great that a slide in the economy probably gets Trump out of office any scenario where small businesses are forced to close down creates something way worse than what we saw in 2008. The government isn’t equipped to handle a major part of the economy shutting down and the politicians in power are only going to use an economic crisis to just divert more wealth to the top with bailouts.

If you’re going to require restaurants and move theatres to shut down that major major ripple effects that need to also be taken into consideration.
Are you going to force the landlord to hand out rent abatements to the shut down restaurant?
Are you then going to force the bank to not collect interest payments from the landlord?
Are property taxes going to be foregiven too?
Simply shutting down restaurants and other small businesses like some cities are doing without providing any sort of relief is going to be a recipe for disaster.

It sounds like the current "demand depression" could turn into another BigFinance Banksters Great Depression, deep, severe, and long

& CDC is hedging on even that. It's new $, fresh & untapped & they want a portion. They ain't greedy, they just don't want to give it all a way. It's against their nature. They want a cut. "You decide." Then they close their eyes & hope for a good #...they can then salt away for a rainy day.
It's why gov't wants a piece of the Internet. It's fresh money, untapped, not the same tired old money that keeps getting shuffled & reshuffled & picked apart.

i dont really blame him for the market (nor did i give him any specific credit for it when numbers were good). but since he constantly wanted to take individual credit when the numbers looked good, i think its fair to throw it back. especially for people like ducks/thread who also touted the DOW as trump's success story
however, as to fighting covid, he absolutely deserves blame for not taking it seriously enough from the get-go, consistently brushing it off as not a big deal. his press conference today is the tone he should have had all along. people would listen to him brush it off, think it was bullshit hysteria or a hoax (thread still does), and went about business as usual, only increasing how far the virus spread

The President of the United States is the most important voice of what should be wisdom and direction in a time of crisis.
He didn't create the coronavirus, and he isn't solely responsible for the stock collapse... but he is woefully unequipped to navigate the country through those things and the market knows it.

It's not really a messaging problem. There are actual, impactful differences between a payroll tax break and direct cash. ie: as we were saying, unemployed don't get access to the former, which, arguably have a bigger need than those employed.

There's a fine line, however. If this prolongs, there will be scarcity. That brings inflation, and you don't want to stoke that flame.

& I agree with your "Why not do both?" challenge. Keep as many American (whole) as long as possible.
& have these industries state their last 10 year profits during this sustained growth period. Get the bottom line, seal a (small) profit & guarantee your employees a (good) portion of their income before Corona while they shelter at home. Those industries won't do that though. They'll hoard as (we) hoard toilet paper & bottled water. It's human nature.
Plus if we're on the gamesmanship angle, not doing so is politically very costly.
Yes. It's the "Jaws" example:::
The mayor explains it to the sheriff. "I don't think you get the gut response to this, Martin. You say 'barracuda.' Everybody is: 'Huh, what? You say "shark" & we have a panic on the 4th of July."
Same thing here. "You say 'Payroll tax holiday,' Everybody is: "Huh, what? You say "$1,000 to every adult American and you have a panic on the floor of Congress."
And what of the undocumented immigrants?

So you're saying someone with a million dollars that gets $1,000 is benefited exactly the same as if someone is dead broke gets $1,000?
But the virus doesn't care if you're wealthy or not. The wealthy could be disproportionately affected by the economic situation. I guess that parts okay?
Economics lesson for right wingers #1:
Take away 70% of a CEO's 10,000,000 paycheck, and they still get a paycheck for 3M. 3M is sufficient to sustain life.
Take away 10% of the income of someone who is living paycheck to paycheck, as millions of americans are. and they drown in debt and become homeless.
Is the wealthy CEO disproportionately affected? Yes or no?
Yes that part is ok.

Suspend banks from collecting on loans so no rents, mortgages or any loans have to be paid for at least 3 months.
