last time the packers did that they drafted aaron rodgers
But this isn't a similar scenario at all. It's not like the Packers picking Love after Rodgers has had a HOF career, or Rodgers after Favre had a HOF career there.
The Eagles picked a fucking backup in the 2nd round because their 27 year old big money QB is brittle as glass and gets his WRs injured by throwing moonballs instead of bullets... Wentz is a joke. Yeah he has a ring... from the bench on crutches.

Also, Detroit Lions have Kerryon Johnson, Bo Scarborough and that dude they just drafted who they say can be a 3 down RB. Not sure why theyre stacking RBs instead of finding more help elsewhere (TE/OL/DL/LB)

packers just drafted a big bruising running back, AJ Dillon. this is not a 2020 pick. they needed receivers. he cant even catch out of the backfield. dude is straight up a goal line short yardage back

could have helped them in the philly game week 4 last year... just think, if they had him they could have played the 49ers in lambeau, which would likely have netted a much different championship game

the raiders offense could be better earlier than later in the season... I see Gruden sending Ruggs on a streak nearly every passing snap, as a decoy more or less, but once they figure out Carr won't throw that way unless he's wiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open, they're gonna bring more into the box and shorter hook/curl zones and just not respect the deep ball

problem is, at the NFL level to be elite at slants against NFL corners/linebacker combo (in those hook curl zones where most slants are caught), you've got to have a bigger body to shield off the defense (or be a crafty veteran with experience)... because you're not going to get the separation against NFL speed that you do on average in college.

Nah. we've seen it in 2 consecutive years, when push comes to shove, as flashy as lamar is, he'll never be even an average starting QB in terms of a passer. The Ravens get in trouble when they fall behind and they just can't come back because they can't throw their way back in the game.
Sure lamar will rack up the easy yards against soft zone in garbage time. But when he needs to throw the Ravens back in it when they're actually in striking distance, he takes sacks, fumbles, throws bad picks. Heck he threw the moonball against Andrews that started the whole problem in the Titans embarrassment, the kind that often gets your tight end injured, that time it got picked, and he showed his immaturity with a dumb penalty on the end of that play too... boom, 7 quick points the other way.

he did... with a *whopping* 36... in a year mahomes was injured and missed time, the rams really regressed, luck retired, rodgers was nerfed by scheme, big ben missed the season, carroll ran his RBs in to the ground (and literally to IR), and brady/brees got too damn... well, old.
I remember reading something like 24 of his 36 TD passes were from inside the red zone. So it's not like he was throwing a ton of deep strikes.
Regardless, Jackson is Michael Vick 2.0 and he has a way better defense and coaching unit than those '00s Falcons ever had. But that's what Jackson is. He'll never be some godly passer. He's an electrifying running QB with the ability to hit his first read from the pocket if it's wide open, or scramble and either run or look for a second option on the move if it's not.

those 8 QB's (mahomes/goff/luck/rodgers/ben/wilson/brady/brees) have had a combined 12 seasons with more than 36 touchdown passes.
lamar only had 1 good wide receiver on the roster, who was a rookie that was hurt during the season. im not confusing him with brees, but he clearly developed a ton between year 1 and 2, and now he's getting another weapon

Drafting the positions I'd prefer. I haven't spent the time to know if they're drafting the right persons. Hopefully the WR they drafted in RD1 is a speed guy in lieu of height. Diggs was our best go-route guy, and he is gone.

Jefferson played almost all slot at LSU and won with route running, made a lot of contested catches. Reason he jumped on the draft board is because he also ran in the 4.4 range at the combine, which is faster than he showed on tape, showing that he may have more potential on the outside than previously thought.

Mayock's press conference today said that the #80 pick, Lynn Bowden will primarily be a running back to start, and if he picks that up well, they'll expand his role. He's also expected to return punts. So by their board, they have drafted 2 WR's, not 3. He also said Ruggs is expected to return kicks, which is interesting.
my grading so far
Ruggs - Correct position, simply the wrong player. I would have been OK with this pick if Jeudy and Lamb were both off the board, but they were both there. They still get some credit for getting a WR and a weapon that will hopefully incentivize Carr to throw downfield more.
Grade: B-
Damon Arnette - Once again, correct position, wrong player. The Raiders needed to come out of the first round with a WR and a CB (unless somebody crazy fell), and they did. But between Diggs, Gladney, Johnson, Fulton, there were simply superior players available to a 24 year old corner with attitude concerns. He plays physical man coverage, but doesnt have great long speed, so he's going to have to win at the line of scrimmage or get toasted.
Grade: B-
Lynn Bowden - They're drafting him as a running back with the hope of expanding his role to be a more versatile piece like Randle Cobb was for the Packers early in his career before injuries. He will also return punts. I question the value of effectively grabbing a backup RB in the 3rd round. I like that he can also play receiver, because we didn't have much talent there going into the draft. The offense did need more explosiveness, though.
Grade: C
Bryan Edwards - This is probably the only pick that I love in this spot. I had Edwards listed as being one of the good receivers to target in the draft (had him in the same tier as Shenault and Hamler https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283593&p=10125339&viewfull=1#post10125339). He also complements Ruggs extremely well as a bigger, go up and get it receiver with great ball skills and good speed. Fell because he had a late foot injury that didn't let him participate at the combine. But a good dart throw for a guy who will hopefully replace Tyrell Williams.
Grade: A
Tanner Muse - He is a pretty good athlete (4.4 speed) and will be playing linebacker and special teams where his skill set will be used at its best. He is particularly good at diagnosing and wrecking screen plays, and is a strong tackler. But he will be changing positions to be a full time linebacker, and we spent most of our FA money on coverage linebackers in Littleton and Kwiatkowski, so this wasn't a huge need and he's a project. I don't see how this is justified in the 3rd round.
Grade: D
While I very much disliked the selections of Ruggs and Arnette, I couldn't give them grades lower than I gave because they still addressed the big positions of need with guys who are legitimately talented. While I disagreed with them, many mocks actually had Ruggs being the first receiver off the board, so it's not a huge objective reach even if I personally didn't like it.
Shaky draft overall tbh... we have 2 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth remaining, and that's it. Still think we need to grab at least 1 more corner. Legitimately would not hate taking the top kicker with our 5th round pick. Carlson was pretty shaky after he performed well as a rook

jefferson has a pretty high floor imo, safe pick to be a productive player.
he put up huge college numbers, played in a pro style offense, won with route running, and then also tested as a good athlete. not a lot to dislike. if he played more on the outside and still maintained his production, he probably wouldnt have made it to the 20s. the uncertainty of whether he can be a boundary receiver is what has held him back from being a tier 1 prospect, as opposed to jeudy/lamb

Done some research and I guess it hadn't hit me how bad the younger WRs of the NFL are. 2016-2019 is pretty much devoid of great receiver talent, unless you count a couple mid and late rounders like Hill. I think Thomas was drafted in the 2nd round in 2016. But there hasn't really been a blue chip WR since Cooper and now the Cowboys have both Cooper and Lamb. Hot Damn!

Hot Damn!
this is true. WR had seen a pretty big lull in high end prospects for a few years... we had Corey Coleman and Corey Davis as the top WRs off the board in consecutive years.
it shall be said however, that even though last year only had 1 receiver in the first round (hollywood brown) the rookie class was actually outstanding.
DK Metcalf, Hollywood Brown, AJ Brown, Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, Diontae Johnson, Preston Williams, Mecole Hardman, Darius Slayton, and Hunter Renfrow all look like they'll stick around and produce, and that's not taking into account N'Keal Harry, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Parris Campbell, Andy Isabella, and Hakeem Butler all disappointing (still early to write them off)
Dallas is a great landing spot for Lamb because the pressure isn't there for him to step in and be the go-to target. Like I've said in this thread, I thought Jeudy was the most pro-ready to step in day 1 and assume that role. Lamb can grow into that kind of player while not being the center of attention (Cooper, Zeke).

like people have said, Lamb comps more to D. Hopkins while Jeudy is more of a Stefon Diggs clone, especially when you watch him take dig routes for long distances; can't really go wrong with either one. Jeudy will likely produce more than Lamb in year 1 because the Broncos have less talent around him and they'll be playing from behind more often than not so there will be a lot of throwing for Denver, soft zone coverage, easy catches etc.
All those guys you listed from 2019 are unlikely to be generational stars though except for potentially Metcalf. The rest are good at what they do but they're not all around stars. Brown, McLaurin, and Hardman are all going to be upper-tier deep ball guys for awhile, Samuel is sort of a poor man's Michael Thomas, Renfrow could be the next Amendola, etc. Harry and Whiteside look like slow jump ball guys that will be out of the league sooner than later.

:lmao getting trent williams for a 5th and future 3rd as opposed to laremy tunsil for 2 first round picks
to be fair, Williams is 31, hasn't played football in a year, and has had chronic injury questions. When healthy he's a top 5 left tackle.

any list that doesnt have packers dead last is wrong by default. green bay was weapons away from competing (they were just in the NFC championship), and in the deepest WR draft in memory, they didnt take a single one. instead traded up for a QB, took a running back, linebacker, etc
i would agree that the cowboys had one of the better drafts. i think the cardinals and browns made out well. broncos went all-in on offense... interesting to see if Drew Lock pans out. i would also agree that the raiders didnt have a great draft. i criticized the first rounders. they attacked the right positions, imo took the wrong players. ruggs isnt a "consensus" reach, but i think it was a clear error. i didnt care for Lynn Bowden too much, and i think Tanner Muse was a waste of a pick.
its weird that they called John Simpson our best value pick. It's gotta be Amik Robertson by a wide margin. then again i dont usually go to the new york post for cutting edge football analysis.

Yeah he will backup Brees allowing Taysom Hill to play multiple positions on offense and special teams. Unfortunately even if the roster improves each season, Brees gets older which is why they will again finish with 12-13 wins and lose a home playoff game because Brees will struggle passing it when it counts and they won’t run the ball to compensate his older age.

The Packers did get Funchess, for what it's worth. :lol He was a beast in Carolina for a short period with Cam Newton. He's basically a poor man's Davante Adams in terms of skills and archetype, unfortunately, so he'll just be his backup I guess.
As far as the Broncos, I think they continue to ride the bottom of the division. With Drew Lock and that gnarly offensive line, it doesn't matter if they had prime randy moss, calvin johnson, julio jones and desean jackson all on the same team. They will struggle on offense.

He's a slow, tall, big receiver with a big catch radius. Which was important when your QB was (s)Cam Newton. Not much of a route runner or much awareness, but can win jump balls.

huh? I watched a ton of Carolina in 15 and 17 when they were an item. All the analysts said the same thing. Having a bunch of bigger receivers like Fun(chess), Cotchery, Dickson and Benjamin (not available for 2015) made it easier on Newton because of their catch radius with regards to Newton's erratic accuracy. But there wasn't a ton of downfield throwing in those Panthers offenses. It was a time of possession offense with Newton, Stewart, Tolbert and the short passing game hogging the ball from the other team. It worked until it didn't (Newton's throwing arm fell off at some point in '18 and it was all over for that era).
Davante Adams isn't much of a deep threat, either. Excellent at jump balls and a much better route runner than a guy like Funchess, and, he has Aaron Rodgers. But the Packers offense doesn't really have legit deep wideout threats and hasn't in awhile. Aaron Jones seemed to be their best "deep ball" receiver at times last year... and he's a halfback by trade.

Adams is a sharp route runner and is a high volume catch guy, not just a guy who goes down the field and wins jump balls. Funchess has the route running ability of an in-line TE. he basically runs a lot of vertical routes and goes up and gets it. they play completely different brands of football. Funchess was really just a less dynamic version of Kelvin Benjamin (before he got very fat)

I havent watched Funchess much at all but from what I’ve seen that Funchess to Adams comparison is even more retarded. Funchess is a shit route runner who relies on physical abilities and Adams is what I’d consider a good but not great athlete who wins with crisp route running and timing.

but during the NFL offseason, once free agency is over, i go back and watch footage of a lot of the players who are projected to be drafted in the early rounds, or even deeper if they are players/positions of interest.
there used to be one great website called draftbreakdown.com where for just about every relevant player they would link to a video showing all of that player's snaps/targets etc, but they shut down before last year's draft, so you just have to scour for one of those databases now. this is the one i used for this year's draft

I also think Haskins can be good, but he clearly wasn't ready as a rookie, which is why his arm strength/ball placement was good but he was slow in making progressions... he needs a lot more practice reps for the game to slow down.

Haskins sucks and was always overrated coming out of school. He's slow as an elephant when he tries to scramble, and he makes bad decisions in the pocket. Also he'll never succeed considering he plays for one of the shittiest franchises in the sport.
Murray is my darkhorse to win 2020 MVP and get AZ to double digit wins assuming there's a full season. He's got a very similar skillset to Jackson and more/better weapons than the Ravens, and a four-wide / five-wide style offense that likes to keep the ball in the QB's hands almost every snap, either to throw or to run. Should be a very fun team to watch this year. Glad Larry Fitz might get one more bite at the apple after all.
Minshew is mid round talent that fell into the late rounds, he's a solid league backup but nothing better, nothing to see there.

plenty of qbs with bad mobility have survived or flourished in the NFL if they had good arm talent or could throw with anticipation. haskins has the makings of that kind of player and was very good with short/intermediate routes at Ohio State, he wasnt just some deep ball chucker. his issue was always experience. he only started one season at Ohio state and definitely was not NFL ready. its why they were wise to start Keenum and it looked bad when Haskins was thrust into duty.
McLaurin is a good receiver (and they have some built in chemistry from their time together in college) but they need more help on offense. lost trent williams, jordan reed should retire, and they dont have any other legitimate targets. neither adrian peterson nor darius guice can catch passes, and they also lost the oft-injured chris thompson in free agency.

kyler is a much better and much more natural passer than Lamar. he's more like Wilson but was thrust into a higher volume passing role as a rookie than wilson. they also had no OL last year, which is what made Murray's throwing so much more impressive. on anything outside of 3 step drops, he basically had to just lean off his back foot and deliver darts 25-30 yards down the field. thats why i kept saying the guy's arm strength is insane... just might not like like the pop of a guy who is able to step into throws consistently. he was all arm and was still getting it done with lousy receivers.
Minshew is mid round talent that fell into the late rounds, he's a solid league backup but nothing better, nothing to see there.
minshew is very similar to keenum tbh. i also liked the fitzpatrick comp from the article. as a raider fan, just looks like the better athlete version of matt mcgloin. aggressive thrower with good anticipation but iffy accuracy and has a subpar arm
contrary to popular belief, arm strength usually doest matter all that much when going deep (minshew was actually a solid deep ball guy). has much more to do with throws to the flats and intermediate routes where you have to put the ball on a rope

probably the biggest factor tbh
plenty of qbs with bad mobility have survived or flourished in the NFL if they had good arm talent or could throw with anticipation. haskins has the makings of that kind of player and was very good with short/intermediate routes at Ohio State, he wasnt just some deep ball chucker. his issue was always experience. he only started one season at Ohio state and definitely was not NFL ready. its why they were wise to start Keenum and it looked bad when Haskins was thrust into duty.

Haskins doesn't throw with anticipation. He throws to an open receiver like it's Madden and gets picked because it's not Madden and DBs don't just stay in one spot and watch receivers catch the ball in the real NFL. Also the Redskins suck and their once good OL is trash now. Their new HC is a failed oaf / buffoon. Shouldn't have let both McVay and Shanahan go, should have gone with one of them.
You're right about Minshew and the Fitzpatrick comp (probably the most accurate one from last year) and the fact that arm strength isn't the most important factor on deep balls. Sam Darnold has one of the weakest starter arms in the NFL and he threw a 93 yard TD bomb on the Cowboys that went about 55-60 in the air, last year. Alex Smith threw em up high to Tyreek, obviously not as good as Mahomes does it but Smith wasn't incapable of it. Minshew just isn't starter/franchise QB material IMO.
Murray.... it's hard to compare him to anyone because he's one of the shortest QBs of all time to play any meaningful pro football snaps. 5'8" and that's generous. Needless to say he has a cannon arm because he was drafted high in the MLB to be a pitcher. PBUs at the line of scrimmage from tall interior D-linemen was a problem last year, he'll need to work on improving the arc on his throws to make up for his height. But he'll get there, and I think he can be an even better running QB than Jackson because he's at least as fast and the 5-wide formations actually favor more running lanes for the QB with all those smaller DBs in dime and quarter formations outside the box. Such a polar opposite from Jackson's Ravens offense that features tons of jumbo stuff... 21, 12, 22 and even 13 personnel.

their defense is above average but it's not in the same league as the 2017 Jags or 2018 Bears my friend :lol
they aren't built to win in the trenches on either side of the ball; they completely stank against the run last year. Teams that committed to running the ball (such as the mediocre Eagles, obviously the Ravens) tore them apart. They had a Charmin soft strength of schedule last year, and not just within the division. One of the worst winning/playoff teams in a long time. And a clown of a head coach who managed to out-bill o'brien Bill O'Brien :lmao

yes, but the markets for TE, ILB, and until recently, box safety... have been suppressed considerably compared to the other high-impact starting positions.
15M a year for the best player on your team is a steal... heck Sherminator at 9M a year is still a steal... but Jimmy G really shouldn't take a penny over that, because he's just a bus driver.

Ravens and Earl Thomas. WTF?
Yeah, my guess is the Ravens hated Thomas from jump street. It was probably a mistake on their part to move away from Weddel for another highly paid guy rather than replacing him in house. Cost him a third-round pick, and he might have a cap hit of $16 Million next year despite not being on the team. Thomas seems to be a really weird guy though, in a bad way. As good as he has been, it's very possible that his removal will make the rest of the team better. He got into it with Brandon Williams after like Week Two last year. This isn't sudden.

they rarely played him as a single high safety though. He was always most successful in a Jamal Adams type of role where he can blitz, stop the run, cover short, etc. They always had a guy like Addae or Adderley back there at SHS and that was one of their weak spots in covering the deep ball. But they successfully shut down the Ravens and their run heavy scheme in the playoffs with pretty much all the safeties on their roster (including James) playing hybrid LB types of roles. Largely in part because their real LBs suck tbh, but James is definitely more of a LB/SS hybrid than a FS/SS hybrid.
Adderley was drafted last year to play FS after they jettisoned Addae, if they signed Thomas then Adderley would have to play SS, which would weaken their run support/tight end coverage (i.e. they had studs like Phillips in the past but no more; they don't currently have a proven SS on the roster with James missing).
Chargers are going to be last place in their division, rebuilding year, and I'm not sure Herbert is even in the same tier as Tua/Burrow; he might be more Jordan Love tier project type.

NBC has the Pats ranked #4. Too much faith in Newton, yes, but Buffalo is trash. Patriots are going 8-8 and winning the division, tbh. NFC West 2010 redux, ironically now the AFC East gets to play the stacked-ass NFC West which is now the best division in the NFL.
Wouldn't be surprised if the Rams finish last in the NFC West at 8-8. They're going to take the AFC LEast back to the woodshed, 2014 AFC North vs. NFC South style.
Arizona is my *big leap* feature team of the year, just like the 49ers last year, which I nailed (see my last year's pre-season prediction threads for that). And the 49ers and Seahawks are still heavy-weights and 7 teams get into the playoffs from now on. It's going to be a fun division. I predict three 10+ win teams.

I didn't mind trading Chandler Jones they just got nothing for him. He was a glorified Tully Banta-Cain. Would rack up sacks against the Dolphins and Jets, but was invisible in the playoffs. A defensive version of Logan Mankins.
None of his 2nd round picks are individually as bad as anything on this list, but I'd say the 10+ 2nd round picks he's wasted on mid-round defensive talent thinking he saw something no one else did is by far the worst personnel strategy he's ever had.

Yeah I thought Rashaad Penny from the same year was equally bad, but aside from injuries, Penny has actually been a pleasant surprise, i.e. he is a home-run hitter vs. Chris Carson's Marshawn Lynch grinding-style act, Penny can actually catch, juke out a few guys and take one a long distance, etc. Michel doesn't even look at the ball; it made me laugh every time Brady threw to him in the flat and it hit him in the ass or back or even the arms and it appeared as if he wasn't even looking for the pass, even with Tom fucking Brady as his QB. :lol

That was the Reggie Bush draft, so no. But of RB’s they had a shot at taking, they passed on DeAngelo Williams, Joseph Addai, and MJD.

he has starting potential... he has yet to show he's there yet, though hasn't really had any realistic opportunity yet. i read this ridiculous stat that going back to college he's had something like 8 offensive coordinators in 7 years or somethin absurd like that
his problem is that he's an unathletic stiff, so he really needs to show he can be a quick processor. i guess studying behind brady is a good way to get that done. he would be a more natural fit in an air coryell offensive system, like what arians does. arians worked wonders with carson palmer, too.

The problem with the air coryell deep-throw-first offense is it relies on the QB to drop back deep and hold on to it for awhile, which puts intense pressure on your OL (especially your OTs) to hold up in pass protection, and with a rookie and a scrub on either side at OT that's a major problem for the Bucs (as it was often in Arizona which led to Palmer's injuries and retirement). You really need elite tackles to play that system and that's why Arians hasn't made it to a Super Bowl despite having high-octane offense teams.
Rosen playing QB (for instance, if Brady gets covid or gets nicked up this year, or if Rosen is the future there at QB when Brady retires in any case) just compounds that problem, since he's notorious for standing tall in the pocket and being completely oblivious to pressures; I believe he set a (dubious) record for sack-fumbles allowed per dropback his rookie year in AZ. Yes, the O-line and Steve Wilks were bad, but that's always been a major bugaboo in Rosen's game. He has an arm and he's accurate. But he'll never start until he gets that seven-step-drop-sack-fumble gig out of his regular regimen.

I just think a lot of teams in general are switching over to the quick-throw, use your halfbacks and slot guys in the flats a lot, etc. type of west coast-ish offenses so they don't have to spend as much salary cap and general investment in the OLine. Look at the Patriots. That way you can invest a whole lot more in other parts of the roster, especially on defense.

Yes. Palmer was injured at the tail end of their promising 2014 season (thus the Ryan Lindley sub-100 yard game), and Palmer was also oft-injured and in and out of the lineup in 2016 when Arizona struggled (basically the end of that team and era). But they didn't go down in 2017 without taking the entire Seattle "legion of boom" down with them. Lol.
Bruce Arians and Palmer had a great year in 2015. But they didn't really have good playoff success in that era; the Arians-Palmer team's only playoff victory came in OT at home against a very much injured Green Bay opponent who wasn't particularly great that year aside from Aaron Rodgers' two miracle hail-mary's.

IMO the Seahawks won the offseason. They replaced Clowney with Benson Mayowa who is 1/8 of the price and at least equally productive. And the Jamal Adams deal was a massive hit. Greg Olsen is already paying dividends. DK Metcalf is now a bona fide star. Lockett got healthier. Dissly is back. Carson is back. Now when Josh Gordon is re-instated, dayum, that's a heck of a roster.

if the seahawks are going to go away from the absurdly run heavy offenses they've ran in recent years they should be really really good. Metcalf and Lockett are a great combo (and they have Josh Gordon waiting to come back as usual)
