Such an interesting question if this run-off finishes as expected and the Senate is in fact 50-50. So I had to look up the other instances where a president died in office. Each of those 8 times, the Vice President who became President did not appoint or carry a Vice President for the remainder of that term.
At Biden’s age and with a 50-50 Senate if that does happen, adding a VP would appear to be almost necessary for that one important duty specifically to break ties in the Senate.
Sorry, I’m not answering the question. I don’t know the answer. Just providing detail that makes the question a pretty critically relevant one.
Fascinating question, to be honest. Is there even an approval process for a new VP? Like, if the Senate is split and there's no VP to break the tie... Could be some serious drama if Senate approval is required for a new VP.
Technically Pelosi is next in line, but that’s be awkward if she now runs both the Senate and the House

Don’t believe the line of succession for the presidency has anything to do with presiding over the Senate. Technically, if the VP is absent, the president pro tempore presides over the Senate. Of course, the president pro tempore cannot break a tie in the Senate because he or she is a Senator who already voted. That’s the dilemma. That’s what makes your question so interesting.

I cared so much more about his race today as well since it’s for a full 6 year term and we haven’t had a popular whire southern Democrat like Ossoff since Bill Clinton. With the way demographics in GA are trending, this is a seat he could hold onto for awhile if he wanted to before maybe running for President in 2032.

Imo they can get one solid climate change spending bill done through budget reconciliation and if it’s written correctly a public option can be done through budget reconciliation. If those are the 2 budget reconciliation bills they get done before 2022, it actually gives low propensity Dems a reason to show up for midterms.

Both parties vote for it. I don't agree with all the republican positions. I'm generally socially liberal and economically conservative. Neither party really reflects my views.
Yeah, technically “both parties vote for it” is a true statement, but do you really believe the Democrats as equally as much to blame for our rampant defense spending as Republicans are? The defense budget ballooned under GWB, decreased under Obama (albeit nowhere near as much as I would have liked), and increased again under Trump. There’s an obvious asymmetry between which party spends more on defense that you seem to be in denial about.
At this point we couldn’t really shrink it overnight either, defense spending has become a jobs program in this country and we’d need to replace it with another jobs program. If you were to gut defense spending overnight there would be a lot of communities in muh heartland that would be in total economic ruin.

I think it’s political suicide. The yuppie liberals with out of control student debt already vote Dem, foregiving student loan debt is a giant slap in the face to working class voters. If the Dems prioritize student debt foregiveness over more important stuff they’ll lose the midwestern states forever.
Either way, not sure why that’s “vote buying” but handing out farm subsidies like candy isn’t vote buying either. Student loan forgiveness is one of countless things you could consider vote buying.

any spending/tax policy could be construed as vote buying
best argument against student loan forgiveness is that (despite all the stigma/nonsense of every college grad getting a useless gender studies degree) college grads tend to be higher earners than the rest of the population, and that if you are going to give big relief, it probably shouldnt go to people at the higher end of the income chart... though the student loan forgiveness talk largely stems from how college tuition has grossly outpaced inflation/earnings to the point where the people who would normally be the big spenders (young college grads who arent billionaires) are not able to spend, buy homes, etc, and it stagnates the economy.

I don't understand what's inherently divisive about PR/DC statehood anyway, outside of the assumption that doing so benefits Democrats.
Take away partisan benefit, and what compelling argument can you really make that DC should not have Senate representation? Or PR for that matter? It's something that reasonable people should be able to agree on regardless, and it should be treated that way.

After winning the November 1996 presidential election, Clinton renominated Garland on January 7, 1997.Garland's confirmation vote came to the floor of the Republican-controlled Senate on March 19, 1997. He was confirmed in a 76–23 vote and received his judicial commission the next day.The majority of Republican senators voted to confirm Garland, including Senators John McCain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCain), Orrin Hatch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrin_Hatch), Susan Collins (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Collins), and Jim Inhofe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Inhofe). Senators Mitch McConnell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McConnell), Chuck Grassley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Grassley), and Jeff Sessions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Sessions) were among those who voted against Garland. All of the 23 "no" votes came from Republicans, and all were based "on whether there was even a need for an eleventh seat" on the D.C. Circuit.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merrick_Garland

Even for a midterm year, ‘22 isn’t an easy senate map for Republicans.
Not particularly easy for Democrats either. Gotta at least defend Kelly's and Warnock's seat and then pick up Toomey's to maintain 50 seats.

I’m worried about Warnock’s seat but not Kelly. The AZ GOP just doesn’t have anyone remotely good to run.
Its also not just Toomey either. You have an open seat in NC and Wisconsin will either be an open seat or it’ll be against a wildly unpopular incumbent. The Dems just have more pickup opportunities than the Rs do.

Also Rob Portman himself would cruise to reelection in Ohio but if he gets primaried by some retard like Gym Jordan that’s a pickup opportunity for Dems.

"the jurisdiction of the U.S. Capitol Police is the U.S. Capitol Building and congressional offices,
which are generally concentrated on Capitol Hill in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of DC.
The FBI Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Police, protect FBI facilities and employees.
The FBI headquarters is in Washington, D.C. and they also have a field office in the city.

Capitol Police, do they have gas, MRAPs, riot gear, water cannons, like Ferguson MO and other militarized municipal cops?
