Texans to lose food assistance and access to medical care because Texas is bad at administration. It's almost as if Gov. Abbott and Republicans want to make life worse for children and needy Texans.
Federal agencies are warning Texas they may withhold federal funding if the state’s delays and backlogs in administering healthcare and nutrition programs persist, according to internal communications provided by U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett.
Since last summer, KXAN has reported major delays and errors inside Texas Health and Human Services that have erroneously removed thousands of Texans off of Medicaid and subjected others to months-long wait times to get food aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Hotwheels takes another "L"
A judge in Texas has dismissed almost 60 cases against migrants accused of participating in an alleged riot at the U.S-Mexico border.
The migrants were facing misdemeanor riot participation charges in connection with a breach of a razor wire barrier at the border in El Paso on April 12.
In an order on Monday, County Court of Law Judge Ruben Morales dismissed the cases against 59 migrants, saying he did not have jurisdiction.
El Paso District Attorney Bill Hicks has said he will appeal the judge's order, which he called "erroneous."
More than 200 migrants overall were charged after several encounters with forces deployed to the border as part of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's multi-billion Operation Lone Star, which has involved the rollout of a series of aggressive measures at the border to curb illegal crossings from Mexico. However, most of those cases have been dismissed. Hicks' office is appealing those rulings as well.

political majorities are transient
Governor Abbott’s pre-election behavior reflects a pattern of bold, controversial actions designed to galvanize his base and address his political vulnerabilities. While seemingly outlandish, these actions reveal Abbott’s concerns about maintaining his and the Republican Party’s hold on Texas. His focus on divisive topics is a reactionary approach.
Greg Abbott has a reason to fear his hold on power: Republicans have been losing ground in Texas for over twenty years.

Old Mexico, New Mexico, is there a difference???? Apparently, not.
In an effort to prevent migrant crossings from the southern border, Texas installed a razor wire along its border with New Mexico, not Mexico — upsetting the southwestern state’s governor.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on September 14 that his state would be “TRIPLING our razor wire border barriers to deny illegal entry into our state and our country.” However, rather than installing the razor wire along the Rio Grande river bank that faces Mexico, KTSM on Tuesday captured footage of Texas Army National Guard troops installing it along a bank that faces New Mexico.

bad decisions that made health care worse for hundreds of thousands of Texans. ideological pigheadedness has a human cost.
The sudden suspension of health insurance for a population the size of New Mexico has had additional ramifications in Texas, including higher treatment costs for hospitals and clinics forced to take on more uninsured patients.
Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, the largest pediatric hospital in the country, laid off employees this year after significant budget shortfalls. A hospital spokesperson declined to comment, but, in a recent financial filing, the hospital attributed some of the challenges to losing Medicaid patients during the state’s unwinding process.
Across the state, some safety net clinics reported a 30% decrease in Medicaid revenue due to the unwinding, said Jana Eubank, who heads the Texas Association of Community Health Centers. She said the extra costs added to challenges for the already financially strapped facilities.
“Some centers are having to lay off staff. Some centers are furloughing staff,” Eubank said. “I’ve got a couple of CEOs that aren’t taking a salary right now. I’ve had centers that are unfortunately having to cut back certain services or extended hours, like behavioral health services, dental services, just because they can’t afford to continue to offer that care.”
Separately, some families that were pushed off Medicaid are also waiting more than a month for food assistance because Texas uses the same eligibility system to process applications for both.
San Antonio Food Bank CEO Eric Cooper said the nonprofit was crushed by demand this summer when families faced sudden medical bills, kids were out of school and the state had a backlog of more than 277,000 food stamp applications. The situation worsened when Texas declined to participate in a federal nutrition program, turning down an estimated $450 million that could have helped feed nearly 3.8 million poor children during the summer.

My take on this has been consistent for 15 years: we need comprehensive immigration reform, a clear legal pathway for immigrants and a lot more immigration judges to clear the backlog and stay on top of the caseload.
Regulating the border isn't 100% enforcement and never has been.

Horseshit, as soon as they breach the border they've committed a crime, they've broke and entered this country. All civilized countries have laws and enforce them religiously. You can't even legally move into the these civilized countries until you've proven you can support yourself and your family. Hard.fucking.proof!

...where did it get us to "see any good in the rest of the world?" They've been sponging off us since 1945...and we've let 'em, encouraged 'em, prompted 'em. Until 1.20.25.
And even now we still let Israel and Ukraine and S. Korea, and Taiwan sponge off us. And countless other countries are still on the tit...like we got it to give, or, to permit to be stolen and grafted from us.

NO TREATS FOR POORS
Gov. Greg Abbott (https://www.texastribune.org/directory/greg-abbott/) is requesting a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prohibit the use of SNAP benefits to purchase unhealthy and highly processed foods in Texas.
In a Wednesday letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Abbott asked for the waiver — which would give the state the ability to restrict these food purchases — to ensure taxpayer funds are used for only “healthy, nutritious food.”

Abbott signs DOGE bill, in an attempt to cut a quarter-century of Republican red tape and regulations
Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a first piece of legislation from this session into law. It originates from Senate Bill 14 and creates the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office, also known as “Texas DOGE.”
It differs from its federal counterpart in that it will be a permanent part of the state government.
During the signing, Abbott said Texas recently ranked fifth in the country for the number of regulations businesses face. House Speaker Dustin Burrows says cutting those allows the state to be one of the best places for businesses and start-ups in the nation.
“Texas businesses, Texas citizens deserve regulations that are plain English that you can understand what they mean, they deserve to know what they actually do, and they deserve to make sure they are consistent and as few as possible,” Burrows said.

Oil and gas are going to suck west Texas dry
With this new law, HB 49 (https://legiscan.com/TX/text/HB49/id/3176184), they'll be able sell fracking water to thirsty cities and towns, or just cruise it into local bodies of water
"A new law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott will allow oil companies to treat and sell fracking wastewater, which could include refilling Texas bodies of water with wastewater.
The law also protects oil companies from liability for any impact, including personal injury or property damage."
A 2022 study from the Texas Produced Water Consortium found that oil and gas extraction is expected to yield 588 million gallons of wastewater per day for 38 years, far outpacing the levels of oil produced
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality would be tasked with creating regulations for wastewater reuse. https://www.chron.com/politics/article/fracking-wastewater-crops-rivers-20381120.php

not so awesome for the Kerr County and surrounds
now deadlier than Helene, 161 people still missing
The search is becoming more desperate for at least 161 people missing in the aftermath of the catastrophic flash floods that have devastated central Texas. Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the grim figure during a Tuesday afternoon briefing, it includes five campers and a counselor from Camp Mystic.
In a news conference Tuesday Gov. Abbott said, "Know this: We will not stop until every missing person is accounted for. Know this also: There very likely could be more added to that list."
The death toll from catastrophic flooding in central Texas has climbed to at least 111, making it the deadliest rainfall-driven flash flood in the U.S. since 1976. The devastation, now surpassing the historic toll from Hurricane Helene, stretches across six counties in the heart of the state.https://weather.com/storms/severe/news/2025-07-07-death-toll-rises-in-texas-flooding-camp-mystic-missing[/COLOR]

maybe having a party that hates governing run Texas for 30 years wasn't a good idea
Texas inspectors signed off on Camp Mystic’s emergency planning just two days before catastrophic flooding (https://apnews.com/article/texas-floods-victims-camp-mystic-death-toll-ea38edadc7e965fb2c76c0ec46245a82) killed more than two dozen people at the all-girls Christian summer camp, most of them children.
The Department of State Health Services released records Tuesday showing the camp complied with a host of state regulations regarding “procedures to be implemented in case of a disaster.” Among them: instructing campers what to do if they need to evacuate and assigning specific duties to each staff member and counselor.

Greg Abbott feels entitled to keep Texans in the dark about his relationship with El0n Musk, because some of it is personal and would be embarrassing
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (https://www.kut.org/tags/greg-abbott) doesn’t want to reveal months of communications (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25975648-2025-06-03-abbott-musk-comms-appeal/) with Elon Musk (https://www.kut.org/tags/elon-musk) or representatives from the tech mogul’s companies, arguing in part that they are of a private nature, not of public interest and potentially embarrassing.
Musk had an eventful legislative session in Texas (https://www.propublica.org/article/elon-musk-texas-legislature-laws-spacex-tesla) this year. In addition to his lobbyists successfully advocating for several new laws, Abbott cited the Tesla (https://www.kut.org/tags/tesla) and SpaceX (https://www.kut.org/tags/spacex) CEO as the inspiration for the state creating its own efficiency office and has praised him for moving the headquarters for many of his businesses to the state in recent years.
As part of an effort to track the billionaire’s influence (https://www.kut.org/politics/2025-07-02/texas-elon-musk-spacex) in the state Capitol, The Texas Newsroom in April requested Abbott and his staff’s emails since last fall with Musk and other people who have an email address associated with some of his companies.
Initially, the governor’s office said it would take more than 13 hours to review the records. It provided a cost estimate of $244.64 for the work and required full payment up front. The Texas Newsroom agreed and cut a check.
After the check was cashed, the governor’s office told The Texas Newsroom it believed all of the records were confidential and asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose office referees disputes over public records, to allow the documents to be kept private.
Matthew Taylor, Abbott’s public information coordinator, gave several reasons (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25975648-2025-06-03-abbott-musk-comms-appeal/) the records should not be released. He argued they include private exchanges with lawyers, details about policy-making decisions and information that would reveal how the state entices companies to invest here. Releasing them to the public, he wrote, “would have a chilling effect on the frank and open discussion necessary for the decision-making process.”

Abbott wants to throttle funds for public schools in Texas, while giving private schools $1B
Gov. Greg Abbott won his campaign to give taxpayer money to private schools. Now he's promising to starve public schools of the funds they need to compete.
The governor promised to push through laws (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/greg-abbott-campaign-property-taxes-21135428.php) to make it almost impossible for school districts to raise taxes. In announcing his run for a record fourth term, he also said voters should have the power to reduce or eliminate school funding entirely.
Abbott is aligning himself with the most reactionary members of his Republican Party. For decades (https://www.cato.org/blog/milton-friedman-school-choice-pioneer), fringe conservatives have wanted to end government-run schools and send every child to private institutions run by clerics or ideologues under the banner of parental choice (https://www.ineteconomics.org/research/research-papers/how-milton-friedman-exploited-white-supremacy-to-privatize-education).https://www.statesman.com/business/columnists/tomlinson/article/texas-abbott-public-schools-private-21168431.php

Pushing ideological clubs in Texas public schools
Texas has launched a partnership with Turning Point USA to create chapters of the right-wing organization on every high school campus in the state.
Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Turning Point USA Senior Director Josh Thifault revealed the initiative during a news conference at the Governor’s Mansion on Monday. They did not outline any plans that would require schools to initiate the clubs, but Abbott said that he expects “meaningful disciplinary action” to take place against “any stoppage of TPUSA in the great state of Texas.”
“Let me be clear: Any school that stands in the way of a Club America program in their school should be reported immediately to the Texas Education Agency,” the governor said, referring to the name of the high school clubs. https://www.texastribune.org/2025/12/08/texas-turning-point-usa-greg-abbott-high-schools/

Texas vouchers weaponized for religious and anti-Chinese bigotry
Texas acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock is seeking to block certain schools from the state’s new private school voucher program (https://www.expressnews.com/politics/article/texas-private-school-voucher-timeline-21124440.php), alleging they have ties to the Chinese government and to a Muslim advocacy group that Gov. Greg Abbott recently declared a terrorist organization.
Hancock has not named the schools or said how many may be impacted. But in a letter this month to Attorney General Ken Paxton (https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/request-files/request/2025/RQ0625KP.pdf) he asked whether he could disqualify applicants that are “based at an address that have hosted publicly advertised events” organized by the Council of American-Islamic Relations, the largest Muslim civil rights group in the nation.
He raised concern about another school that “may be owned or controlled by a holding group” linked to the Chinese government.
“The people of Texas deserve the highest assurance that no taxpayer dollars will be used, directly or indirectly, to support institutions with ties to a foreign terrorist organization, a transnational criminal network, or any adversarial foreign government,” Hancock wrote on Dec. 12, asking for an expedited ruling on whether the schools should be excluded.
While an attorney general’s opinion is not legally binding, the state could use it to justify barring schools from the program
