View Full Version : Woj: Zach Collins Agrees to 3-Yr, $22M Deal with Spurs

This is insane. He made sense as a flier on a cheap 2 year contract. Instead, it either appears the do view McDermott as a starter (also insane) or they're still after Markkanen and are trying to form the whitest, t-rex armed, physically weakest front court since the Hornets some years ago.

When your bigs are Purdle, U-banks, Fluka, Collins, and McNugget. You are in trouble
This is a 2022 signing tbh. His recovery time is December. He's 23, can shoot the three, play big, and defend the perimeter. Those are the modern big traits you aim for. Dont forget he played with two ball hogs and his numbers are definitely skewed due to that. I am a blazer fan and can tell you the two sharp shooters ALWAYS missed him running the floor for and easy basket. He is definitely better than his numbers and they went their furthest when he was healthy.. that's name of the game on this signing. It's just a gamble that you can get him healthy. If he can become healthy, this is a decent signing going into next year. Signing him this year is basically just calling Dibs since the spurs don't really have anything else to do with the money, it's not that bad of a call.
JOHN Collins has to be the only probable big signing this year and the spurs likely know their number and his number. Either they're close or not. If not, might as well start planning for the future.
I don't mind this signing at all, as long as it doesn't interfere with other signings. At this point, that isn't the case.

Collins being a three-point shooter is a bit of a myth. He shoots them less frequently than Dejounte Murray and hits 32% for his career. McDermott isn't really a high-end sniper (despite his reputation) but Collins barely registers as any type of three-point shooter.

I'm going to withhold final judgment until we learn more details about the deal and see what else the Spurs do with the rest of their cap space. At first glance, it's really a questionable signing and since it's one of the first moves of the offseason, it doesn't build much confidence that the front office is making the best decisions. But the Spurs could still sign John Collins, for example - and if that had happened first, and this move happened last, we would probably be singing a different tune

This deal is a stretch even more if there is no John Collins signing or acquisition to finish free agency

Brian Wright: Alright, so we got that John Collins max offer we'll keep quiet until Friday since he's a restricted free agent and we gotta catch the Hawks napping. McDermott agreed. We got some cash left ... we better spend it before Pop tells us to bring Patty back.
RC Buford: Alright, who would take $7 million a year?
BW: Hmm... I'm not sure. That's not much money these days.
RC: What's Kyle Korver up to these days? You can trust that guy at his word!
BW: Uh, I think he's retired.
RC: What abut Pau Gasol? I think he even has a foundation! And he opted out that one time so overpaying him is only the classy thing to do!
BW: I'm pretty sure he's busy right now. What about that broken down big man in Portland? He can't be asking for much.
RC: Bill Walton?
BW: Nah, that other guy.
RC: Sam Bowie?
BW: No ... what's his name, he barely played. Ah, I can't remember his name.
RC: Greg Oden?
BW: No. No. Oh, yeah, Zach Collins. I think he's out for the season. He'll take whatever we offer. Plus, the rest of the NBA would think we're crazy so they'll be caught totally off guard when we sign John Collins to the max.

Timmy ain't walking through that door tbh.
You can say what you want about these moves, good or bad, but one thing is clear --
They had a plan and got the guys they wanted early. This doesn't feel like scrambling around at the end of free agency, looking for Plan B or C.
That alone seems like a positive (notwithstanding the fact, of course, that it could all be a complete disaster :lol).
In any event, the question is answered -- they have chosen a direction for this team, they have a clear vision for this team, an approach which will either succeed or fail, but even its failure will leave no doubt about what they were trying for.

That'd be good news if it nets the Spurs a top pick. Unfortunately now we can't depend on the Spurs to draft halfway decently anymore, they'll waste it on some scrub who has the potential to be a lottery pick the following season.

Alright, so seriously, the second and third years have to be non-guaranteed, right? This also has to be a declining contract, right? You pay guaranteed money up front in exchange for possibly having him at a below market rate the next two years.
I still don't like the signing even if years two and three are unguaranteed with declining money amounts ..... but at least I could better understand the strategy behind the deal.

Declining might put the absolute max for John Collins in jeopardy.
Or maybe the 22 is with unlikely incentives. but those are limited to 15% of the value.

You’d think it’d be the opposite to guard against the risk of him never playing again vs returning. Low exposure for rehab year and if he comes back, then he’s earned more than 7MM.

Lots of games could be played. For example, what about is "likely" incentives. A pay per game set up of a bonus (say $40,000) for every time he suits up for a game, would be a likely incentive (all he has to to is be healthy to get it, not like winning an award or anything). It would count towards the announced value of the contract as a likely incentive - that's $3.2M per 80 game season. Would take a lot of the sting out of paying him $7M to rehab for a year...

This is a really good signing and I have no idea why anybody is bitching about it. We need a rebuild and that’s going to take 3 years. Pop isn’t going anywhere as a coach (apparently I was wrong on that one) and so that means we are tanking even if we don’t want to tank :lol
So by signing these shitty players that only reinforced the TANK. I rather have these POS than the Real Collins at this point. Initially I wanted JCollins but he fixes zero issues. Our issue is that we have no A level talent. Our best player is a B- player in White. How do we get A level talent? You get lucky as hell and draft it. So yeah we are gonna suck and these signings suck and ZCollins won’t help in any way shape or form. But at this point, we need as many lottery picks as possible to get out man. Meanwhile this shitty ass no foot Collins is perfect for us. Locks up money on a player that won’t help and ensures we suck bad.
Btw everyone here was saying no way are we near a Sacramento Kings position and our front office is so much better and blah blah blah. Now they realize that ol Kobe’s Achilles was right on the money and we are a waaaays away from making the playoffs. At the soonest 3 years away apparently:lol.

But you have to get him to agree to the deal.
Putting the money up front protects him so he can afford to give you a bargain on the back end.
It also earns some trust and may increase your chances of keeping him if he ends up having a nice career.

incentives can't be more than 15% of the total.
Also per the cbafaq section 74 on incentives:
A bonus also cannot be based on the player dressing in uniform or being eligible to play for a specific number of games.

Tank like Patton (but look good doing it.)
Sign shooters so we can claim to be trying to score enough points to win. Check.
Sign a charity case so we’ll continue to look like wonderful people. Check.

With DDR back? Maybe. But without him and without Collins they're a 20 win team. Even with Collins I don't think they'll be at last season's level unless some young guys make a significant leap.

Ya - meant with DDR back. No Collins or No DDR then it’s definitely less although I think DDR may not be as big of a loss in the win column as people think with Murray/White/Lonnie/Devin/Keldon absorbing his net negative minutes.

Collins is still only 23. He may not have played a lot of basketball, but his skill set is undeniable, and he has also spent four years with an NBA team where he has played all the way up to the Western Conference Finals.
Team’s draft or sign guys who have had injury issues in the past, so it’s worth a small to medium multi-year deal for a team to bring him in. There are very few guys who can shoot threes, blocks shots, and defend out to the perimeter. Collins has a recovery date of around December.

If Zach can resume potentially playing in December then this was a great signing! I’m skeptical but minus the injuries he would have been a hot commodity this free agency
If … and that’s a big if … this works, the Spurs will have the 5 covered for a very reasonable amount of money between Collins and Poeltl. And it looks like Collins can slide down to the 4 too as he played with Nurkic and Whiteside:

And that’s all with $30 million left to spend.

The theme of the offseason has been shooting. Even the summer league team features NBA hopefuls whose only real ticket to the league is shooting. Zach Collins is a stretch five who is also a competent pick and roll defender. If healthy, that is worth 7M. If the Spurs didn't fully guarantee his deal, it's an understandable signing. They could have waited, you'd think, until after they sort their max, but maybe another team gave him an offer.
You can see the front office wants to return to "five live", as LeBron called it in 2014. That is, playing a lot of minutes with five guys who are all threats from perimeter.
This will require all our youngs to progress as shooters. It also means being very selective with Poeltl. So it's risky, but a bet on internal development.
If we're still secretly in play for Ben Simmons, then collecting shooters is also necessary. Simmons thrives in space and is elite at finding open shooters.

So it looks like the only reason for signing Dieng late in the year was to have an extra big just in case the Spurs made the playoffs... interesting. If they didn't have a playoff run in mind, it seems like it would've made sense to just give those minutes to Eubanks for experience. I guess a couple months of a minimum contract isn't any kind of a risk financially, but I'd love to hear the conversation the FO had when the topic first came up.

Yeah, I didn't get it at the time either-- but I guess they likely had no intention of re-signing him anyway, so they weren't worried about his possible negative perception of allotted minutes.
