View Full Version : Shams: Bryn Forbes Agrees to Deal with Spurs

If he is a fringe end of bench guy then fine.
If he gets minutes this place will melt down.
This is exactly why people are melting down. On its own it isn't a bad move - a 40% three point shooter on the cheap, perfect for the tank etc., however, the fear is he won't be a 10th man and he'll steal valuable minutes from Walker, Vassell and/or probably Jones too, depending on the rotation.
That said, with all of these moves they've made, it does seem very likely that they'll be doing a 3 for 1 trade, or something like that, and clear up the backcourt logjam a little.

Forbes was the worst defender in the league in San Antonio. Went to Milwaukee and still the worst defender in the league.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nba-player-ratings/
Sort by defense and see Forbes is 250th out of 250. No hyperbole here. He's literally the worst defender in the league.
Not quite.
For Forbes last season with the Spurs, Collin Sexton was the the worst defender in the league.
Forbes was only the second worst.

I don't think any of this rings true, it feels like trying to graft on some narrative or excuse for Wright.
Why would Wright worry about his job when the local media never criticizes the team. Even the Twitter blogboys like Tom Petrini have already been co-opted with a part-time media gig ... Completely afraid to criticize anything they do including the Forbes deal
Simple answer is the most obvious: Wright is terrible at his job, doesn't know what he's doing, and should be fired. No psychological backstory necessary, he's not a character in a story arc. He's just terrible.
Wright is doing what Pop wants... Make no mistake... Bryn was Pops favorite pet...

The only upside is Bryn Forbes can hit 3pt shots. Granted, he’s a piss poor defender against 1st team guards, but if relegated to coming off the bench, he could provide some much needed points. Honestly, I don’t think the NBA is going to allow any team to play any reasonable level of defense, so what good is a one on one defender in the current NBA? The current style of play is run to the 3pt line and jack the first open 3pt shot. The only good 2pt shots are rebounded put backs or if run off the 3pt line & the shot clock is running down. Face it, every second DDR & LMA spent on the floor shooting 2pt shots, we were losing the game and just didn’t know it until the clock showed 0:00 and we had lost another “close” game.
However, just to clarify… I don’t like this signing either. :bang Just trying to find some nugget of good in a pile of 💩.

Was it ever announced how many years Forbes' contract will be? I don't remember seeing anything other than he's returning. Then again, I may have blocked this traumatic experience from my memory :lol
The Spurs could either be helping him improve his stock so he could hit free agency next year .............. or they could view him as the new Patty Mills and want to lock him up long-term as the teacher of corporate knowledge or whatever.

i don't see any numbers but this made me puke
Among the transactions, one player that will not be returning to the team is Bryn Forbes, who agreed to return to the San Antonio Spurs after one year with the Bucks. While the financial specifics of the deal remain unknown, the writing was always on the wall that Forbes would likely be the first free agent out the door, given that he was likely seeking a hefty raise and saw his role in the rotation minimize as the postseason went on.

It was tampering, that’s what it was. There was surreptitious communication between Pop and Forbes which convinced him to decline his player option with the Bucks, and also not to accept offers from other teams, such as the Nets. Because of the tampering, the Bucks were harmed by the loss of a player who might have continued with them, and other teams were harmed by the loss of an opportunity to negotiate with Forbes.
A tampering investigation is called for, and a complaint should be submitted to the NBA.
Do I really believe this? Shut up, it’s my only hope.

This is like one of those bad dreams where you never thought it could happen. And you kind of laugh at even the concept of it. And then out of completely nowhere it happens and you’re just numb to it.
look it's been fun, but as of this point anyone complaining about Forbes is a drama queen. We went through this before and all the superlatives have already been wasted. Think of it like medicine and doctor says you have to take the Forbes and cry if you must. but stuff like "oh finding out this news made my heart stop and i puked blood and spoke in the language of the dead gods for 11 minutes, my family is dead and i now smell like eggs all the time, fuck PAFTO" are not fun, original, or interesting.

I really don’t see how he fits in the rotation unless they think DV is a small forward. DV, Lonnie, DW & Murray are all going to play ahead of him. I think he was signed to be injury insurance just in case DW has another long season of injuries or covid hits the team again. If it doesn’t I expect a lot of DNP’s for Bryn.

Vassell is a 2.5 and given the roster construction, is slated to backup the amorphous 3/4 duo of Johnson and McDermott.
Forbes, Walker IV and Vassell will all be in the rotation, pushing each other for minutes and between numerous inevitable absences from them, Murray, White, Johnson and McDermott, they'll be plenty of opportunity for all, as well as Jones throughout the season.

Forbes can make a big bucket. He’s not clutch, but not a choker either. He also works his ass off in the gym. As long as he fills that Patty Mills role, I don’t hate the deal. Also assuming it’s a 1 to 2 year deal with a low salary.

All you geniuses said Pop was going to lose the Gold Medal and he didn't. All you geniuses. Until Pop starts Forbes or gives him huge run over the younger guards, it hasn't happened yet. When Forbes was last on the team, Murray and White were much different players. I'll join you if he starts giving the guy 30 minutes, but it hasn't happened yet and it never will. Believe it or not, Forbes is a great shooter and the team is loading up on those. Believe it or not, he has championship experience. Last I checked, no one on the roster does. Of course the team isn't competing, but believe it or not, Forbes is now a veteran in the league and we just said sayonara to every single one of our vets.

I agree, but I mean why not just give Primo a shot at that role first? I don't hate Forbes as depth anyways, he's still under 30 and that's how he's at his best. He played commendable minutes when there were injuries and he was filling a role with us at times.

you can think that, just wait til Walker or Vassell mess up on defense and Pop subs in the traffic cone Bryn Forbes. I'm pretty sure Forbes will be the back up PG and if we need a clutch 3, we will most likely run a play for him like we did for Patty. I'd rather see Primo or Trey Jones get minutes

Choosing the youngest guy in the draft, losing all the vets, signing no 'star players,' this is exactly that- rebuild time. We will lose a lot of games and get an even better draft pick next summer.

Respect my greatness.
Someone should do an analysis of the worst-rated (defensively) starting guard on each team to see where each stands among the 250 ranked by Nate Silver. There would be 30 such players.
My guess is they would almost all be ranked pretty low defensively among the 250 but it would be interesting to see.
Then see how those rankings correlate to the overall defensive rankings of their teams. Do the teams with the lowest-rated starting guards also have the worst team defenses? It would seem to me that defensive rankings would have be based on opponents' points per game, shooting percentage or points per posession, not some crazy-ass formula that depends upon blind faith in the man behind the curtain, sometimes referred to as "advanced stats" in a rather self-congratulatory way. (But I suppose that's just me.)
My suspicion is that the best defenses are more a product of who has the best defenders rather than who avoids the worst defenders.
To analogize to baseball (National League), the teams with the best offenses may not be the ones with the best-hitting pitchers, the pitchers' primary contributions are in a different area. Same with guards who are in the lineup to create offense.
At the very least, it would be interesting to see where each team's statistically worst defensive starting guard (an article of faith to begin with) ranked in the 250.

I'm pretty sure he and Landale are splitting the $4.9-Million room exception. The Spurs might have a bit more cap space depending on how they order their signings, but it basically looks like the RE and min deals left. I guess Landale could take a min deal and Bryn could have the full $4.9 Million, but that would be distressing.

I would’ve preferred Patty instead, but I understand Forbes age aligns with the young core plays a part. By the end of the day, it’s still an NBA team that needs to score, and Brynn can score. I definitely don’t like him starting, and I think that depends on Vassell and Walker shooting well. Also, I suspect, and hopeful, that Brynn will also get better, defensively. He’s a consummate worker.

Tbh I prefer Forbes over Passive Lonnie. I wonder if it’s possible that Pop reached out to Forbes and told him the Spurs would act as his security blanket and sign him to a contract in case he couldn’t find a better offer elsewhere, and that’s why it was reported in the media we had agreed to terms with him, but that in reality Forbes is still searching for a bigger contract from another team which is why we haven’t officially signed him yet.

The media wouldn't have reported that we agreed to terms with him if he was still searching for a better contract.
Everybody's hoping he's going to pull a Morris and renege but in order for that to happen he would have to:
1. Actually be wanted by other teams. The reality is no one wants Forbes. If it wasn't for us, he'd be playing overseas next season.
2. Actually be scummy enough to pull off a Morris-like stunt. Forbes has too much "character" to do something like that.

I doubt it. Unless I missed Landale signing, there's no reason to believe Forbes is not coming back. It's clear those two players are both waiting for the same cue to ink their deals. Bryn also opted out of guaranteed money and then agreed pretty quickly. That suggests he wasn't desperate for a deal, even though his market was probably not all that intense either.

Agree on likelihood but Bryn opting out was a mistake and as far as FA goes he was not early imo. He was the last thing. My guess is market dried up fast on a lot of guys and Sa did him a solid. But agree there’s nothing to suggest he’s not actually signing.

I was gonna entertain the idea that Forbes' signing might be an S&T, but the best contract Bryn could get in that scenario is a bit less than $9M/3. Something's telling me he's not signing that. An issue with that deal would be that MKE can't really justify taking back any salary to facilitate that with their tax situation. I'm sure they'd love to do an S&T if they could get a TE, but neither team likely wants to pay a third team to take, say Hutchison to make the numbers work. They could trade Eubanks for Forbes on that contract, and maybe Milwaukee is okay with that given their lack of good center depth. That would leave the full RE open for Landale or whomever else and would probably full clean up the roster. Again, though, I doubt Bryn would go for locking himself into that contract, and Spurs fans better hope that Forbes isn't going to sign a three- (or four-)year deal.

It’s def not out of the realm Bryn gets a much smaller deal than expected. Things dried up crazy fast and he made a mistake. Luckily SA had his back due to him being a good guy and “vet” but so many players had to take way less (Dennis Schroeder etc) than they ever imagined. Not taking extensions and opting out were mistakes for most.

It's not likely that they HAVE to resolve the Young trade first, but it's possible. That rumored Saric/Smith package saves the team a chunk of space, and if they can add Eubanks and/or Hutch to the deal, it would save them even more. I don't know what they'd be able to do with the space at that point, but maybe they are counting on it.

That rumored Saric/Smith package saves the team a chunk of space, and if they can add Eubanks and/or Hutch to the deal, it would save them even more. I don't know what they'd be able to do with the space at that point, but maybe they are counting on it.
Lol adding Eubanks to a deal where you already signed a worse player in Collins and then get a worse player in Smith too

I wonder if SA basically allowed Forbes to use SA as leverage without a real signing ever being the intention? Far fetched but maybe they did him a solid and let him float it with a back up plan of only a small guarantee where he has to beat out Tre in camp to not be waived if another team doesn’t bite?

lol I already said that was more of a hope than a real thought
But most importantly hopefully it’s a deal that ends up him having to compete and beat Tre in camp (and Lonnie + Vassell too) or get cut with minimal damage next year cap wise.

It just makes no sense why he will be signed. Huge logjam already, he’s not young and somewhat of a general roster crunch. That’s why I’m thinking his deal is minimal guarantee so he can be waived or there’s a trade coming.
Because if you know you want to see guys in camp before waiving then why would you pre commit money to Bryn when there’s a real chance others show better? Now you just threw money away at that point.
Signing Bryn to a legit deal (meaning beyond 1 year) means you view him as a lock which means trade or for sure not caring about camp as much because you know who you will waive going in

Forbes is coming off of a season where he was fourth among qualifiers at 45.2% from 3 and has now shot 41.2% over five seasons.
Like it or not, he's an NBA player and won't be competing to make the team. He should be in a fringe rotation role, but that's not happening either. Unless Walker IV makes a quantum leap, he's the likely sixth man.
Barring a trade, I wonder if Samanic will have to compete to make the team.
There are rumors that they are still trying to trade Thad, that has to be resolved first. Then Landale and/or KBD to sign to get over the cap. Bryn is the last once they got access to the room exception.

Samanic is guaranteed next year. When there is a rookie scale contract option, it must be picked up before the PREVIOUS season, so his year 3 option was picked up before last year. He’s not competing to make the team.

I know, but things changed roster wise and both his not appearing at Summer League and Johnson not really having a concrete answer as to why was awkward.
I expect him to be on the team, I just wonder if it's not the stone cold lock presumed.

I mean, you're confident that the Spurs will eat $4 Million for Hutch (yeah, I didn't forget about the team's Twitter) and may believe they'd eat $10 Million for AFA. I don't see why Luka's guarantee is that big of an impediment. Certainly, the Spurs owe it to themselves to not just reserve a spot for Samanic ahead of camp. He hasn't been given a fair shake, but like Walker, it's getting to the point where that might not protect him.

They’re not going to eat almost $3M when there is low hanging fruit like Eubanks or DaQuan.

The difference is, barring a trade Eubanks is in line to at least start the season in the rotation until Collins is healthy and they get a sense of whether Landale is an NBA player.
Jeffries had his QO rescinded a while back.
Meanwhile, Samanic is slated to not only be out of the rotation, but beat out far better compeition (Johnson, McDermott, Young, Vassell, possibly Aminu) to earn a spot.

This is exactly my impression but I know fans don't want to hear it. The Team has added a few Project bigs, and McD who will take minutes at forward. Luka also competes with Keldon for minutes, who plays the 4. I think they could still find him time when there are injuries and such. He's starting to be fixed to that CoJo role as someone who gets beat to the regular role by others, but his situation is precarious if he doesn't show something new in training camp, like a jump shot.

They could be also be looking at trades for him.
Edit: and I’ll hedge because they owe it to themselves to see what they really have in him with a more regular opportunity. It's possible his game doesn't translate from what he was doing in the Gleague, specifically offensively, but they would not be able to know that for sure without giving him a real chance. IMO, he should have played summer league. He needs as many reps as he can manage against good competition to prove himself. But he obviously has to earn his role like everyone else has.

Well hats off to him, he clearly is training hard. This team is so mediocre/talentless, despite the
logjam at he 2 he might have a regular role off the bench if he continues to check all the boxes in terms of Spurs culture.
Bryn’s an elite shooter and his desire to get better year after year is admirable. I just wish he wouldn’t be relentlessly hunted on the other end of the floor, thereby giving up the good he might do on the offensive end.

Might not mean anything but Bobby Marks has Forbes as a free agent in 2023. That points to a two-year contract with no team or player option after the first season. So, yeah, Forbes probably got a two-year, ~$10 million deal.

The more I think about this, this feels like a “proof of concept” thing. Like Drew, this is a player the Spurs plucked out of the undrafted scraps & spent significant time and treasure developing. There is value to the long term success of their feeder system to show others — like a Weiskamf — that their is a real path forward (not just platitudes about hard work) to being a real player in the league.

This is a nice concept and all, but surely having "developed" Forbes already and having him win a championship as a role-player would be proof enough of this concept? What's the need to bring him back? Not like players nowadays aren't aware of what the rest of the players in the league are doing...

Lonnie has the athleticism/length to theoretically improve on defense(his bball iq is the limiting factor here). No amount of defensive training is going to make Bryn's T-rex arms any longer or make him quicker. His physical traits will prevent him from ever being a good defender. Might as well optimize his offensive game.

I still have no freaking clue why this organization brought Forbes back other then we have money to spend but no one is out there so oh well let's give it to Forbes?
I'll be honest, I don't get the Forbes deal with the sole exception that if you don't put some shooters on the court, then your slashers, which technically are the best players on the roster, will have no room to get into the paint. And unfortunately, he is already the first or second best shooter on the roster.
