Actually I take that back, I thought about it for 30 seconds and Forbes is definitely the worst :lol
Fvck!
Put it this way. Is there a ST poster that welcomes this signing. Like I mean with even a trickle of optimism.
I would bet Forbes is universally unwanted on this forum, fwiw

He needs a new approach. CP3 style circus flops would at least be a new wrinkle. Just thinking out loud here.
Or like a heel turn and he’s dirty. Just something.

This may be the first time I've seen SpursTalk unified on a signing or player or decision. Unfortunately, it's going in the wrong direction.

I wouldn't hate on him so much if he could draw a charge every once in a while. Shouldn't be that hard if your constantly targeted by the other team... I mean is it really true he has never drawn a charge? That's crazy!

its not from a lack of effort. ill give him that. he just doesnt seem to have the hip flexibility and quick twitch muscle needed to stay in front of ppl at his height. i like him and hate that he catches hell for something he obviously cannot control.
thus, it comes back on the coaches / front office for both signing him in the first place, but using him in such a way and with certain lineups where this shortcoming is exposed to the degree that it is.
i wish him well. i know hes a great shooter but if he could just not be the absolute worst defender in the league, perhaps he wouldnt be as crucified around here as he is.

Got word from my barber who cut Bryn’s hair yesterday that he is back. Bryn didn’t think he would be back but when Spurs reached out it was a no brainer. Not sure how long the contract is they are still working out some details. Sorry guys was hoping to hear different news :/
of course it's a no brainer since this is the only head coach who's dumb enough to start him

For the record i am glad forbes is back. He's a likable guy who will generate a few highlights in a dank and dreary season. I'm actually not particularly unhappy that Forbes is back. I'm unhappy that he came back in a way that used up a valuable salary slot. I'm unhappy that Pop and Co. thought he was the best way to address DeRozan leaving that they could muster. It's easy to believe Pop will be too in love with playing Forbes. But people forget that Pop also benched Forbes then let him walk. Bryn's actual most recent time with the Spurs was in street clothes during bubble. I do think he'll find his way into starting units. But I also don't think the Spurs are married to him starting. Murray, Johnson and Poeltl look to need offense, so Bryn and Walker will likely get their shots to provide it. It's possible Forbes is the best scorer on the team at this point, which is sad as shit, but probably true pending Walker and Primo developing. Hopefully, SA can get 2018-2019 Forbes, the guy who was gritty and did an okay job as a secondary or tertiary play-maker. I hope eventually they find a better player to do it, but there's a role for Forbes to play on a good version of this year's roster. But at least he raises the floor for a two-guard a bit more. There are a lot of things Lonnie does better than Bryn, but aggressively going after points isn't one of them.

I got told that Forbes got a one-year, $4.5 million deal with no options either way. It's a second-hand source so take the info with a grain of salt. I haven't been able to get that number confirmed.
Tbh ..... that'd be a surprising contract. You'd think either Forbes or the Spurs would put an option year on it. But, uh, I guess I'd be okay with that deal because it'd mean that he may only be here one year. Obviously it sucks that he's back but a one-year deal is the best scenario in this bad situation.
Hopefully something more concrete gets leaked soon. I still have a bad feeling that this thing is really a two-year, $10 million deal.

I mean I’ve been on the one year (or team option 2 year/non guaranteed 2nd year) train. He turned down like 2.8M and there was not a big market for him. One year at 4.5M is basically like a 2 year deal for him value wise imo. He didn’t deserve a raise really but got one. Please be one year.

I think some have sources at the league, and teams do have to submit terms to the league for cap/tax purposes.

Since some folks are going to have to be cut to pare the roster, this signing means we won't go for broke with the young kids rebuilding, but will try to go into the next season with half-measures instead of a full out rebuilding year. Half-measures seldom work out IMO because you wind up pleasing no one. It isn't that Forbes has no value. He's proven he can remain in the league with his skill set, but my preference would have been to go with a full measure of rebuild. A rising tide of mediocrity will drown folks chained to the bottom.

Yeah, in the NFL, exact contracts are reported to the league once signed, and reporters are told explicitly what they are. There's always a point where the terms are definitely disclosed. I don't believe the NBA has that specific policy though. The league knew Forbes' terms when the Spurs submitted the signing, especially since the Spurs had to clarify they were using the room exception to get him.

Spotrac now has Forbes' contract exactly as I stated (one-year, $4.5 million). So unless their source is my post, we can be confident that's the actual contract :lol
It's a weird deal because they didn't give him the whole exception but didn't leave a notable amount behind. And usually there is a player or team option when teams use this exception.
Overall, though, I'm happy because this really could just be a one year rental where the Spurs bring him in for the season for veteran leadership purposes. prayingdog.jpg

My guess is that the Spurs didn't know they were going to give him the room exception when he agreed. There were options like S&Ting for Zach Colilns (as part of Markkannen being in the DeRozan deal and going to Portland or Cleveland?) that might've preserved cap space. It makes sense for Forbes to jump ship from Milwaukee, because he is getting more money and a bigger role. For the Spurs, he's pure insurance against Walker or another potential scorer not being able to step up and a potential trade piece to a contender if he plays well this year but SA doesn't have playoff hopes. If my theory is correct, the Spurs could've believed they had the capacity to offer him three or four years and didn't do it. That's as good of a sign as anything we've heard in regards to Forbes' return. As I've said, he doesn't raise the offensive ceiling, but he does raise it's offensive floor a bit.

I'm 'ok' with this signing... I think it works positively for us in two different paths we may choose. If we end up trading for Simmons before the deadline he's a decent fit playing alongside him. If we don't and just go with the guys we have he's a trade assist at the deadline. The only way to screw it up is signing him long term with the team as presently constructed.

Yeah ... after further digging, it really is a $4.5 million, one-year contract for Forbes.
The Spurs now have $400,000 from the Room MLE left over that they can do ..... nothing with, AFAIK. I can't think of a scenario where they can even spend that money.
Chinook's theory that the Spurs offered Forbes this contract before they knew whether they'd use cap space or the Room MLE is really the only thing that makes sense, tbh. Perhaps that Hutchinson trade came out of left field and was too good to pass up and it was better than whatever the Spurs had planned to do with the Room MLE.

Yeah, he's not reporting different numbers. But I am more giving him credit for actually tweeting it out. That makes it "official" so to speak.
But yeah, I could imagine the Spurs wanting to hold onto the ability to hand someone a $10M/2 deal but thought Hutch and a decent second made more sense. Do you have any sense of if the Spurs are going to give Chandler a real shake in camp or if like exstatic says, they're basically planning on waiving him no matter what?

Whether they paid him 4m, 14m or min wage isn't flagrant. It's that he's on the roster guaranteed, meaning we have to watch him in untold amount of games. Every minute he's on the court will be a negative wave of energy from a viewing POV. Some of y'all have mentioned he's the best scorer on the roster. That's a terrifying realization.

Haha preach!! The good thing is this team is literally bottom 5 in the league; both talent wise and coaching. At some point in the coming years there will need to be accountability from Pop, Wright and whoever else has had a say in a string of bad decisions. I just pray we don't trade any of our first round picks before then.

this is overly dramatic. when you lose the centerpiece of your future roster in neph, which PATFO had built a strong team around and which could have ringed, you dont get to bitch about the following 3 - 5 yrs, imo. as it was, we barely missed the playoffs the last two seasons. we will see what happens next year, but the cupboard will be restocked with players over the next two seasons if we suck. Expect a return to successive playoff runs again starting maybe next year, but for sure the year after.

That Spurs team was absolutely positioned to ring sans ZaZa’s antics. The Kawhi sauga definitely put PATFO in a challenging place and they have made bad decision, after bad decision since (Marcus Morris debacle aside). I do not expect a return to playoff contention anytime soon. We do not even have one player who is close to all star potential. Maybe DJ who I rock with heavy, but that is it. Even the shittiest teams in the league have one player who has star potential. Who is ours? Johnson and White got the show for team USA basketball for obvious reasons. PATFO has their heads up their asses, living off of the legacy of DRob, TD, Tony and Manu all of whom took money off the table to win. Now we over pay scrubs to lose. Sad but harsh reality.

So that means it's pretty much a three-way competition among Walker, Vassell and McD as the starters. Walker should get the first shot, since the SL needs the offense he could bring. But if he doesn't cut it, or the other guys score enough, Vassell and his defensive potential might make more sense. McD should be on the bench with Young, as they make a good combo. But he and Keldon also fit together as well, and the SL needs shooting in addition to just offense. Plus Forbes and Doug and potentially Walker as a bench unit screams all-time bad defense. I'd feel better size-wise if someone at least McDermott's size was on the court.
Thad's obviously a dark horse, but that spacing would be abysmal. Then again, Pop kept playing with Cun as a starter, and I don't know that Young can't be better than him offensively.

Yup, having two of McD/Walker/Forbes on the court puts a ceiling of "mediocre" on the defense, and all three would be a disaster. One that could have been avoided by just not signing Forbes.
I wouldn't worry about Young in a Cunningham role though. At that time Pop was still trying to win, now the emphasis is on development of the young players. The vets on this team are now role players instead of primary options, so I expect a big shift in the usage rate pecking order compared to the last few seasons. Starting Young and Poeltl (along with Murray) would also really hurt spacing.

I like what y'all are hinting at in starting the younger players who've been here mutilple years. I'd like Vassell to get the 5th starting slot. Murray, White, and Johnson are locks to start and I'd suppose Poetle will by default. Walker is the 6th man with McD and Young rounding out the 8 man depth.
Forbes unfortunately is #9 and will get minutes every game. The interesting spot is who coach places as the 10th player. Will be shuffle that throughout the rest of the roster from the beginning or settle on a guy (Jones, Samanic, Londale) in the opening stretch.
I'm dismissing Aminu and Eubanks altogether. Don't think either can or should play 10+ mins on this roster.

I think Doug McBuckets has to start, he’ll provide spacing plus IQ to the starting lineup that’ll help DJ, DWhite, and Keldon
Lonnie needs to be the man/focal point on the bench, surround him with Devin, Bryn, Thad, and Tre Jones

If McDermott starts, the trickle down effect is one of Vassell or Walker IV likely playing limited minutes with a full squad, since either Murray or White will run backup point and Forbes is assured minutes.
If Vassell or Walker IV start, the trickle down effect is Johnson has to exclusively defend fours, which means White has to continue to defend up a weight class.
If Young starts, the virtually non existent spacing would remain intact, only with far worse shot creation sans DeRozan.
Expect McDermott to get the nod, with Vassell a possibility at some point. Also look for them to play Young at the backup five as much as feasible.

McBuckets will most likely start but I am hoping (against hope) that Luka Samanic gets a chance to show his wares later in the season. He has shown enough flashes to inspire some hope that he could play the stretch-4 plus good defense.

TBH I'm glad to have Forbes back with the knowledge that Pop knows the focal points and the youth will be given a shot. The idea of him starting or coming in with an assumed large role was nauseating to say the least. But having someone who knows the system and who is at the very least gonna come to work and push everyone; in that sense it's a good thing. Championship experience or not he is a champion and was a solid contributor until he needed to be taken out. Got to give the guy his due. It's not like he was someone who rode the pine for a year and got an easy ring like Gerard King or something... I think his presence will only help the team as long as his game presence doesn't effect the outcome in a negative way. He is a very useful player as a fringe rotation player in a way that Steve Kerr use to be.
Not gonna lie, haven't been this excited about a Spurs team since we signed LMA. Plan on investing in some Att... I think this team may be a surprise team in the league and I have really high expectations from Primo... I think he could be really special and in the mold of the Kobes and MJs of the world. He's got that same kind of focus and passion... And his form isn't there yet but if he could perfect it, I think he could have a very polished game. IMO he can do everything like Kobe and MJ could, but I think he needs to be a shooting guard. Getting reps at point isn't gonna affect that. He is special IMO; very special. As of now I think Keldon and him are future All Stars. Lonnie needs to find his niche already; I mean he's a slasher/shooter type but it hasn't been mastered. I don't know how he fits long term. He's starting to look like that odd man out, but his ceiling is a highly combustible scorer so he just needs to be very aggressive while playing smart. Dejounte would make a great 3rd piece. DWhite in a Ginobili role would be perfect. And if Vassell could be some sort of Ariza in his prime type player I think he would be fine. I think he has elite role player potential as a glue guy, defender and spot up shooter.
Ideally I see a Primo led attack followed by KJ and then Dejounte. White can lead the bench as he is at his best facilitating the rock. I think Poetl would be better with him as they work really well together but Jock may be second there.
I find Jock's skillset very tantalizing. I mean if he was a rookie with that skillset and he was at a top program he would be a lottery pick IMO. He can pick and roll, and pick and pop, and is a great finisher. His shot doesn't look modern in the aspect of just shooting to shoot. He has a pure form. I'd love to see him with the starters. I think he would fit very well there and you can squeeze another shooter in.
For me this is what I'd like to see;
Starters; DJ, Primo, KJ, Doug, Jock
DJ, Lonnie, KJ, Doug, Jock
Most likely IMO; DJ, Lonnie, Devin, KJ, Poetl
I think this team will really struggle with spacing unless two can be close to knockdown shooters. But defensively they would be very tenacious and I'd assume start the game like that and help build the mentality and set the tone.
To me the odd guys out are Devin and Poetl because. Especially Jak; he's just been so soft in the middle. I think a tough Aussie like Jock could really push him and light a fire, so I think he will have a great year cause he has to. As for Devin, I know his Defense is great and if he is a knockdown shooter, then yeah replace him with Doug, but Doug a vet and has offense in himself with his movement. I don't know how mobile Jock is and if the focus is rebuilding the D then yeah that might not work but... as far as matching skill sets I think it is very balanced and he won't be expected to do much. It would quite literally be the same reason why Pop gave so much burn to Trey Lyles...
As for the Bench I'd like to see;
DW, Lonnie, Devin, Thad, and Poetl - Solid defense, plenty of scoring and vet leadership. Could be one of the best benches in the league IMO.
DW, Primo, Devin, Thad, and Poetl - Gives the kid a chance to earn his stripes before starting and lets Lonnie control his fate.
Most Likely;
DW, Bryn, Primo, Doug, Thad - Lacking on D with doubled the weak links, offensively could be explosive and give a spark you typically want from the bench, could be very competitive or go sideways fast.

In the summer league, where no one cares about defense. He was like the 4th option on a nowhere SEC team.
Avery was also a coach there not too long ago, and they have been apparently watching him for years.. conspiracy theories aside if you get my implications... KJ knew him... lots of connections there. If they reached like this they clearly "wanted their guy and made sure to get their guy."
But summer league or not name the last guy who made shots which looked like that and made it look that easy.. Kawhi if I'm not mistaken and he's 18.. his mentality and drive, character all diamond .. I mean he has that clutch factor; kids his age typically shit their pants or play their age and maturity.. He doesn't let much phase him. Listen to the pod where his agent gives his thoughts about him.
I don't know how many ppl believe in the "it factor" but he definitely has that.. He's just wise beyond his years man. He's got the name and the game. Keldon is like a bully scorer like a wing-like Julius Randle... If he has a primary who can create space and shots and have a gravity that really opens it up for him.
As for DJ he's solid don't get me wrong. He's a dog for sure and someone you want to battle with, but he doesn't have a star game man. He's somewhat limited offensively because his weak handles. White I think has elite role player potential, it's just he's gonna have to be limited like Ginobili cause I fear he's fragile. Lonnie just needs to be more aggressive while playing within the boundaries so to speak.

The question of whether Primo should start or not depends more on his own temperament than physical "readiness". Even if he's physically not ready (which I honestly don't think is true, but whatever), if he's the type of competitor that can take a bunch of lumps while he gets better, then it's in his best interest to learn in the best league possible as much as possible. If him being physically outmatched will frustrate him or otherwise cause legit damage to his mental state, then you put him the weight room and get him ready. I actually think Primo is in the former camp, and especially given that I think he's already a physical match for most two-guards in the modern NBA, I think he'd find a balance where he can exist in the league while also clearly seeing where he needs to grow. I've long been a proponent of the team bringing Josh off the bench in a defined role rather than shunting him off to Austin. It's good that they have Bryn there to fill the role if Primo can't, but ideally, Forbes gets traded for some value later in the year so Josh can come up.

I 100% expect Primo to get minutes; I mean he’s a lottery pick. You never want to bury someone like that… When is the last lottery pick we have ever had that didn’t get minutes. Lottery players typically play because you think they have lottery talent. Lottery talent if accurate never gets DNPs ya know. And this is a year to see what they have. Why in the world would a team that has league wide expectations of going back to the lottery not spend time to develop their youth especially with the best prospect we’ve had since Kawhi… that point is debatable I know but for me at least that is my stance. And Pop has already said what the focus is… there is few vets and its all about the youth and their development. This year is a crash course on building a competitive team or simply A how to win NBA games for dummies so to speak.
According to what the players are saying its gonna be a defensive first, fast paced, beautiful game type mentality… if they can execute I really believe they can do something special. DD, RG, and LMA aren’t alphas or closers… They were never gonna take us anywhere on their backs and they were ancient dinosaurs of all old ball stopping era… I am beyond thrilled they are gone. At least Bryn and McDick are knock down shooters who won’t stop the ball ya know. I am thankful for their time but it completely extracted my interest in the team… For me I lost all desire to follow the team during DDs meltdown in Denver. To me thats when I knew the team was dead…
The team was a fkn weed i wanted to get pulled for years… I knew how it would play out… There was no hope there at all. The head of the snake was full of chokers with weak mentalities. After watching legends for almost 20 years I could just not stomach the cowardliness tbh… shit drove me nuts… I knew any big game the “stars” would shit the bed. I knew pop gave to much reign to these vets/mercs who didnt deserve it. I knew it would be one and out… Felt like a waste of time for the first time in my life as a fan…
I mean I kept track of the scores and I lurked and I caught a game here and there but that brand of basketball to me was revolting… could barely hold my interest for mere minutes… But the Anti 3 are gone now and my interest feels restored lol

I For me I lost all desire to follow the team during DDs meltdown in Denver. To me thats when I knew the team was dead…
Ha! I'm glad you also remember DeRozan getting kicked out in game 6. I sold my stock on him after that performance. And recall Aldridge was still a damn productive player in '18-'19
And trust me you didn't miss a whole lot skipping on the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons. Not only did coronavirus ruin both years but a firmly entrenched Derozan anchoring the Spurs was unlike anything Spurs fans had to deal with since Robinson's rookie year. The guy developed a baffling aversion to even attempting a 3-pt shot.
You had coach playing head games with Walker in his rookie year benching him repeatedly for errors that Forbes and Bellinelli made routinely. Walker had a tremendous breakout game vs Houston in Dec 2019 and iirc coach didn't play him the subsequent games. They signed this complete scrub of a player named Demare Carroll whose play made Frobes seem valuable. They eventually cut the guy midway despite him being a 'key' signing the previous summer.
And last year it was the Gay and Mills show (behind DeRozan) with neither player ever getting a boot no matter how harmful their play was. The Spurs best win was a drubbing of Phoenix without DeRozan or Mills.
This is a good year to restart watching SA routinely, though I suggest be cautious with how you think Popovich will manage Primo. Unless coach has truly adopted a change to his methods I don't see the 18 year old getting PT ahead of the glut of swingmen, with Forbes being the real barrier between Primo and the court. I envision another Walker/Belinelli scenario like two years ago. Very much hope to be proven wrong

As long as he doesn’t get too much minutes and is paired up with solid to good defenders, I feel he will have a good season. Hopefully Pop doesn’t over play the man like he did In the past.

In the summer league, where no one cares about defense. He was like the 4th option on a nowhere SEC team.
Primo had the 10th USG% for Alabama.
OTOH, that "nowhere" team had the best record in the SEC and ended up 5th in the final AP poll.

Pop not playing Forbes is sort of a revelation.
With McBuckets out there, there is no way to play Forbes, in part because McB plays the role so much better.
Thinking more broadly, you should never have two of Forbes/McB/Thad Young on the court at the same time. Just only play one of those three on the floor at a time, and always one of White/Murray, and that's the rotation.

I was let, alright, cool, they signed some crippled guy who may never walk again for $22 million -- that could be an honest mistake. They signed Marco McBellidermott for $42 million. Aight, not optimal but whatev. Made up for by destroying the Bulls in that trade and signing Jock. Roster looked nice and open -- no limited players in the way of up and coming talent.
Then Bryn comes back. Mr. Limited who will directly steal minutes from the best talent. I'd way rather have Mills or Gay than Forbes.
My god.

This new offense doesn’t really have a dominant player they would double team and open up 3pts for Bryn, unlike with LMA, Demar and last year Giannis. In a roster that switches on everybody, Bryn really doesn’t have a role on this team.

I'm so sick of the Forbes hate yooo... Lonnie can't finish at the rim, Keldon has to go barreling in the paint for contested 2s, You know know what DJ, White, or Vassell is gonna give you, an nun of them can really shoot... O'yeah, this is a league where NO ONE really plays good defense. We could've really used Forbes shooting last night.
Maybe we signed him so Pop could prove he could bench him when he played poor?

Drom is right. Alabama was a damn good team this year.
Ecstatic sounding like a casual tbh.
"4th option" and still was clearly the best player on the team but deferred to his teammates, didnt buck the coach and played his expected role. That's what a mature team oriented player does and yet you wield that as a negative. Faulty logic.

Forbes had a great (for him) offensive outing last night. It's very much the bar for his ability.
And the Spurs still lost to a Dallas team missing important players. It's credence to the idea of no reason for him to get any PT. You will lose with him, and you may lose without him. But you definitely will lose with him hitting 6 3pt shots.
