That's not how it works, though. It doesn't matter if the bottom part of the ball is completely outside of the pitch, if any part of the circumference of the ball is inside the pitch, the ball is in play. On that aerial shot, you can see that the ball didn't leave the field on its entirety.

Yeah, it's the reverse of the break the plane for TD rule.

Don't think any other ball sport, where lines still are considered as fair, does it like that. Baseball, Tennis & Volleyball all would've considered it out.

Learned something new today.

Honestly, no one can convince that Spain didn't tank against Japan. On paper, a bracket of Marroco and Portugal certainly looks easier than Croatia and Brazil.

Sure, they were playing with fire since at one point, Costa Rica was winning 2-1 and Spain was out of the WC but in the end, Spain managed to pull it off.

Anyway, historically and specially in the last 2 decades, Spain has done well against Portugal. They actually beat and eliminated them just a few months ago, in the Nations League. So they obviously feel confident about that matchup.

On the other hand, i believe Portugal addressed some issues since that match. Specifically, playing Pepe and Felix over Jota and Danilo. Two players i considered to be Portugal's weakest links. So that matchup is wide open imo, assuming they beat their opponents in the round of 16.

Not to overlook Morroco. They're obviously capable, otherwise they wouldn't have finished 1st in their group.

Also, there's the component of centuries of off the pitch history between Morroco and Spain, which might give the players an extra edge going into this matchup.

Goes to show you how much you know your football, tbh. :lol

Germany had the core of arguably the best Bayern Munich team in history. It was kinda like what Spain had with Barcelona in 2010. Those that didn't have Germany as favourites knew very little, tbh.

I remember everybody saying Brazil just because they were locals, but I knew that Brazilian team was shit, specially after Neymar went down. I wanted that final vs Brazil so much. World Cup champions vs Brazil in Maracana. :(

We had to settle for the next best thing. :hat

You are wrong buddy. Germany was a far away favorite

Sbnation.com:

The updated odds to win the 2014 World Cup have Brazil sitting as the 3/1 favorites, followed by Argentina at 9/2, Germany at 11/2, and defending-champion Spain at 7/1.

The odds were hugely in favor of Arg, Bra

Tournament location is hugely overrated. Teams can use it to propel them to a deeper run but it's almost meaningless once you reach the SemiFinals and beyond.

DAF86 is right. Bayern's treble core + Klose/Podolski, Reus/Ozil/Shurrle and Kroos/Khederia/Mertesacker. No weakness.

Gave up 4 goals in the entire Tournament. Dropped 4 on Portugal, beat the 2018 Champs, then both South American giants.

Best team since 2002 Brazil IMO

I saw the game and I did not see any tank, Spain attacked till the last minute. They rested 5 or 6 players which was a reasonable thing to do considering odds were slim for them to not classify but they played normally

Spain did look like they were attacking until the very end but obviously finishing second would be more beneficial to them.

Portugal have a pretty mediocre coach and have yet to be really tested by a decent opponent but I think a lot of teams have yet to be truly tested so far.

I also think Uruguay laid their bed with their petty brand of football, but that they got robbed against Portugal and Ghana is indisputable. Had any of your teams suffered the same fate, you'd be outraged and calling for the hanging of the refs. False. They're out because of goal differential, and three separate actions directly affected that, one even acknowledged by FIFA it was the wrong call (the penalty against them vs Portugal). With the same coach and petty tactics, they still should have gone through. That much is clear as day. If you're fine with that, I hope France suffers the same calls Uruguay did, and I'd love to hear you about it afterwards.

No. When you get the right calls and you miss opportunities due to incompetence (like Argentina vs Sweden in 2002), you have to shut your mouth and accept your fate. After all, being efficient at defending and scoring is part of the game, and if you're not, it's only fair you pay the price (as we did many times). But when you're being adversely affected by the wrong calls time and again, that's not just your own wrong doing. Players are professionals and supposed to own up to their mistakes. Guess what, so are refs, much more so when they get the opportunity to review a play time and again, and use their power to turn a right call into the wrong one. That's unacceptable, and should all be fired.

That's unacceptable, and should all be fired.

let’s agree to disagree.. despite all of that this Uruguay had the talents and his destiny in his hand. They are out because the coach is a fucking idiot.

on a side note, Griezman was not offside on this goal, VAR should not have refused the goal. Then VAR could not have intervened anyway... does not change shit but imagine the same shit in the final. One thing is sure this referee and VAR crew won't be part of the final :lol

Finally France put a formal claim which is dumb imho... let Tunisia with the win and no need to create a mess with FIFA

Yesterday you posted this, re:Uruguay FIFA acknowledged they made a bad call (a small miracle in itself) and it ended up eliminating them.. i already said Uruguay should point fingers at themselves first but you can't deny you'd be pissed if this happened to your team.. i didn't see today's game, on the radio they said uruguays claims were iffy at best.. but the Portugal penalty was clearly a bad mistake

Group H: Portugal #1, South Korea #2. Uruguay, Ghana eliminated. It seems Uruguay was close to classify. Same points as South Korea, same goal difference. But direct game went in favour of South Korea. Too bad Uruguay didn’t qualify, they can put the turbo mode in knockout phases.

Only Netherlands and England didn’t lose a game, so far. Out of the favourites, Brazil seems to have the easier path to semi-finals.

The other probable quarter finals are evenly matched. Netherlands vs Argentina, France vs today England, Spain vs today Portugal. Though, there will be some surprises for sure.

Who did the US, Morocco, & Croatia lose to? Also, newsflash: there are no “easy paths” in the knockout round, especially if you’ve even taken time to watch any of this unpredictable World Cup. So not only is your post filled with misinformation, it’s also filled with propaganda.

Nothing is a given, but there are harder paths than others. USA has it the toughest, IMO, likely having to go through Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, and then France/England/Spain. That's about as tough as it gets.

Not reaching the last 8 is a bad result for Argentina, reaching the semis would make it a good WC overall as far as I'm concerned, unless we're booted by Brazil (that would hurt TBH).

Nah... I'd swap Croatia for Netherlands in a heartbeat. But Spain / Portugal should be a good one also.

Argentina vs Australia 2:1

Messi with an goal only he could made, to open the score.

The first quarter final key is Argentina vs Netherlands.

Holland and Croatia definitely seems like one nation ascending while another descending but I'll still side with the proven product. There is noway the Croats will come out flat but it's also unlikely you shut out Holland.

Actually, that might be an interesting perspective... on the other side of the bracket, France vs England, and Spain vs Portugal are natural rivalries. On this side of things, Argentina vs Netherlands has a lot of history, with the clockwork orange thrashing Argentina 4-0 in 1974, Argentina taking revenge 4 years later by beating them 3-1 in the final match, then in 1998 we met again in the quarterfinals with Bergkamp, Kluivert, Davids, Stam & co having the last laugh against Batistuta, Veron, Almeyda, Zanetti, Ayala & others, in a thrilling match that could have gone either way between two great teams, that ultimately was decided by a late goal. And finally, the semifinals in 2014 with Argentina eliminating Netherlands on penalties after a tactical matchup with Mascherano & Romero being the heroes of the game. To round up a classic quarterfinals, Japan vs Korea sound like the perfect complement, plus I'd be very happy for more selfish reasons :lol
