Damnit Pop. When a team has to foul, you put:
Brent
Manu
Tony
Finley
Barry
on the court and let them pick their poison. Putting a hack like Duncan in there and then making him the primary pass option on the inbounds is just stupid.

Duncan's FTs continue to stain his career. fuck, he lost the game in regulation.
Spurs are lucky that another Island boy also choked.
Pop's grade deserves minus 10 points for leaving TD in there. Inexcusable.

Nah...I think that was a legit foul lol. Ginobili cocked that shoulder back and let Bell have it right in the chest. It was clear as day. I think it was payback for that slap in the mouth the play before. I think Popovich saw it too which is why he was pissed.

Wilt has the top 3, with 18-18, 16-16, and 15-15 (if I recall correctly). They didn't list anyone else after that, so I guess that means Oberto is #4 on a short list...fantastic.

Until Phoenix realizes the gimmick offense (of Nash simply running around in circles until someone gets open) doesn't work consistantly enough in the fourth quarter and overtime, I'm not convinced they'll ever be a contending team when coupled with their defensive (not bad, but not good either) and rebounding (pretty mediocre, despite potential for more) inability.
Congratulations... crappy end of game by Phoenix with equal part Spurs taking over and Suns handing it over (in my opinion).
Soon as Bell missed that last FT, I knew the Suns were going down. Can't lay too much blame on him since he hit a big three and made the potential game-tying and winning drive. Nash's moronic transition foul on Parker was just as costly.

Am I the only one that saw Bell flop like a bitch? He hurt himself by flopping backwards into Duncan, and proceeded to bounce off and onto the floor...quite sad, but he got the call so fuck him.
I didn't understand that play. WTF happened to Bell? It just looked like Manu knocked him in the gut a little, but Bell was writhing on the floor like he had a broken rib or something. Replays didn't really show anything happening to warrant him being such a :dramaqueen
BTW, I don't think Oberto broke any record...Wilt still has him beat by about 3 or 4 more FG's. However, I would have laughed my ass off if Oberto managed to tie it. Can you imagine the record books?

Lack of defense and rebounders hurts you guys more. When you have a close game, especially in the 4th, against good teams like Spurs, Dallas, Miami, etc. you need to be able to make stops and rebound. Suns still don't have that...adding Raja Bell doesn't make you a defensive team all of a sudden. That's why you guys were still something like 0-7 last season in close games.

It's not the gimmick offense that kills you. 9 times out of 10, Nash running circles until someone gets open results in either a 3 pointer or 2 pointer for the team.
Not in the final five minutes. It doesn't work. I've seen it for three years and unless the circumstances are right (i.e. every being hot), Nash runs around in the halfcourt set, Suns stand around on the perimeter, he uses a few for screens, there's one or two cuts toward the basket, but most times it's a semi-contested perimeter jumper that, because legs are no longer fresh, don't go in as consistantly as they did earlier.
Lack of defense and rebounders hurts you guys more.
As I'll adress later on, at times I like the Suns defense. It's average with the potential to be better. Last year they were pretty solid. Probably hovered around top-10 (in real defense, not Hollinger's fantasy stat land) and could be counted on forcing a fair amount of misses. This year they do so inconsistantly, but come the fourth quarter, much like with the offense, the fresh legs that out-ran and out-jumped early simply tire and the effectiveness of a defense based on quicks and gambles diminishes.
Rebounding, however, is atrocious. They could be better, but until Amare can return to a 8-per form, they'll struggle to be average. They are too short and rely too heavily on athleticism as opposed to skills to net their rebounds. Save for Thomas, there isn't a fundamental rebounder amongst the lot.
It's not the players, it's the system. It's emphasis is offense and defensive gambles for easy offensive opportunities. Anything that actually requires work on the defensive end seems to be ignored, in large part, by every player save for maybe Bell and Thomas.
Actually, I thought in spurts the Suns defense tonight was as good as I've ever seen it (in the D'Antoni era). If they had spared themselves the brain farts on Oberto they would have won comfortably.
Yes. In spurts. When the regulars legs are rested and they cann get the quick leap to take advantage of the quick read, then yes, they can be effective, but once legs get tired and the ability to out-quick the opponant is gone, they are a rather pathetic halfcourt defense. Couple this with their inability to rebound and you have a recipe for lost leads or big deficits.
Overall, they've competed in every game. Realisically, they could have won this, the Utah and the Lakers game. Still, they didn't win and the reasons why are pretty obvious. Inconsistant everything. They can get points and good defensive statistics, but until the start to buckle down and run deliberate half-court offensive sets and start to apply defensive and rebounding technique to their athleticism on the defensive end, they'll continue to win or lose at random as the shots are falling late. If they aren't, I have little confidence they can hold leads against playoff teams.
That is all.
To be honest, I'm as sick of Bell's and Manu's flopping as I was of players stopping to bitch to refs. I HATE flopping and would welcome a rule similer to that of "diving" in soccer. Any interpreted intentional flop or baiting of the refs results in an automatic tech and two free throws for the opposition. Two T's result in an ejection.
Does anyone else think flopping is a plague on the League? I know there are tons of Manu fans out here, but I, as a Suns fan, admit that Nash's and Bell's flopping hurts the game. I just wonder do other fans think little of the "artform" and do so to enough extent to want something done?
In my opinion, half the offensive foul calls in the League are complete BS. Same holds for Nash and Bell. Seriously. I SIMPLY HATE FLOPPING :pctoss

Also, because of the trap and swarm style defense played by the Suns, a player like Oberto is always capable of having a big game because not only is he just plain bigger and more skilled than the Suns frontcourt, but his man is likely wandering around in search of a steal or block or swarm on Duncan (or whomever)... Last year vs. you it was Nazr. Before that it was Rose. He who is the last capable any other night is very capable vs. the Suns because the "defense" pays very little attention to them and every big man in the NBA can dunk semi-contested or hit a layup with some random guard rotated onto him.
It's the norm. Some good games happen to come from good players like Okur or Kaman. Others come from Oberto or Bynum.

You have to admit the refs handed you guy's the game. Twenty-five free throw attempts to six. Pathetic. What happened to the no whining rule? Guess it doesn't apply to the Spurs. Yes, Raja missing that crucial freethrow at the end killed us and also Marion and Diaw letting Oberto look like a superstar did not help either but it gets frustrating to another team when the refs let the other team waltz to the free throw line a lot. When the Sun's start getting their rythm back this year then they will win games like these. Amare played well in his limited time on the court. When Diaw wakes up and we integrate our new guys in the game better we will be a lot better. It is not like the Spus blew us out. Just count yourself lucky that you got home cooking tonight!

Last year, Suns were last in the league in FTA. Same the season before. It's hard to foul a team that relies so much of jumpshooting and 3 point shooting.
Yeah what they said :smokin

The Spurs got Elson specifically so they wouldn't have to go small versus Dallas.

Yes, I am a Sun's fan. If I remeber correctly the Spurs did not go to the line much last year either. Nash was being bumped like a pin ball tonight and there were questionable offensive fouls on some of our guy's tonight. Mr. Floppy was out of bounds when he threw in the ball at one time and Duncan was on the out of bounds line one time and the refs did not call him out of bounds. Stuff like that adds up eventually. Yes we made stupid mistake at the end but it was a freethrow parade by the Spurs for the same type of fouls that the Spurs comitted on the Suns. We had quite a few points in the paint so that does not mean we just shot outside tonight. Admit it, you would not have been in the game except for the freethrows. Your team shot horribly tonight.

Since everyone is in this thread - what is the record for most FGs in a game without a miss?
I doubt Oberto set a record tonight, but he may have come sorta close.
I heard on ESPN it's a Spurs record (11/11 that is)

Also, because of the trap and swarm style defense played by the Suns, a player like Oberto is always capable of having a big game because not only is he just plain bigger and more skilled than the Suns frontcourt, but his man is likely wandering around in search of a steal or block or swarm on Duncan (or whomever)...
Just wanna give you props for your intelligent and well-written analysis of the game (and the Suns' weaknesses). You should be writing articles. I'd read them.

So, can I gather that no one else within this thread is tired of flopping? if I can guage the responses, or rather lack thereof, to indicate this, my only question is why do you like flopping? The act itself lends to injury, not just for the flopper (he who flops) or the floppee (he who charges), but, as exampled by Barbosa last year, innocent bystanders as well. I think it's reckless, dangerous and silly and that it's become too much of a defensive staple in too many players games.
I hated it the first time I saw Derek Fisher play and I hate it even more now that a half-dozen players on a team employ the tactic.
I guess I'm alone in my quest - for now - but I figure there will come a day when a star player goes down and goes down hard and for a very long time and everyone's preception of this "defense" changes. It's really a weak way to defend. I know for some it's truly a skill (Bell, Manu, Fisher), but if you went back and counted, I'd bet there's roughly 6-8 offensive fouls called a game with roughly half of those being flops. I think it would help to open the game up more. Perhaps that why Spurs fans dislike it and why I, as a Suns fan, would like it, but overall, I think it lends itself fairly to every team as defenses who almost entirely get by on their ability to draw charges (like Phoenix) would be weakened even more than a defense like San Antonio where it's only one trick of many.

Cry me a fucking river yourself. Thats what you guys did last year when you lost to the Mavs for the same type of stuff. I would not exactly call the Spur that tough defensively this year. We still shot a high percentage and your team shot poorly. Free throws won you the game plain and simple!

Oberto's 11-for-11 performance broke the franchise record set by Mark Olberding in 1977 and tied by Gene Banks in '83.

I used to think blaming the refs was weak. Now I see it's a pretty natural reaction, no matter how good a team is or how educated or classy their fans are.
I've seen many on this site blame the refs and that's not an indictment for anyone NOW blaming the refs to continue. I'm just saying that after a tough loss I can now see why some fans feel the need. There's always toss up calls in a game and for the large part the home team gets them. If the home team happens to be the more agressive of the two teams playing, they may very well net a larger share than just by simply being the home team.
Personally, I'd blame the missed FT by Bell or the moronic and-1 by Nash on Parker with just under a minute remaining that gave San Antonio a lead rather than simply tieing the game. Perhaps the game plays out different had Nash just let Parker go, but that one FT sure looms large now, doesn't it?!
Just a thought. Players play. Referees ref. Players play despite how the referees ref. I guess that's what I'm getting at. 90% of the cases where the refs are charged with "handing another team a win" it's simply not the case.
I'd imagine roughly the same percentage of fans who blame truly don't mean it, but are rather just blowing off steam.
One penny + one penny = two cents... There's mine, take it for what it's worth.

Cleveland can beat any of those teams on any given night. Not sure about a series, but I think any of the three you mentioned and possibly Cleveland by year's end could be the team to lose to the Spurs...

The flopping has gotten out of control, but unfortunately as long as there is a charging rule in basketball there will be flopping. It is almost impossible for a referee to judge some of these calls as flopping when there are so many things to watch at any given moment.

I think the new rules emphasis is cutting down on the number of offensive fouls called, and thus eventually the value of flopping is going to be diminished. My sense over the first few games is that refs are being overall more stringent about needing to be in a good defensive position and being set before they'll call it offensive.
On the other hand, they seem to be calling moving screens more than last year, when it was a complete joke what you could get away with.
I applaud both trends.

Being "bumped like a pin ball" is not the fault of (nor deserving of fouls from) the Spurs but the result of how Nash goes into the lane. One could argue that it is also Ginobili who gets "bumped like a pinball" whenever he drives into the lane as well. Does that mean they should automatically get the call when they throw their bodies in amongst the big centers and forwards?
The Spurs deserved more free throws than Phoenix with their aggressiveness, their post play, and ball movement which constantly caught Phoenix defenders out of position when shots were taken. The Spurs deserved this win and were not awarded this victory by the referees.

With Dallas losing, who's terrible start is more surprising? Phoenix (1-4 vs. 2 Clippers, 1 Lakers, 1 Jazz, 1 Spurs) or the Mavs (0-4, 1 Spurs, 1 Rockets, 1 Warriors, 1 Clippers) and which team would you expect to pull out of it. By raw numbers it looks like the Mavericks could be 2-2, having two blowout losses while the Suns have lead in the fourth in every game they've played.
I'd say Dallas is more surprising, but Phoenix has slightly better opportunity to pull out of the funk. Dallas is good, but they went against modern conventional basketball last year by being a very, very good isolation offense-based team. Suns, meanwhile, play a sloppy, but more conventional brand of team ball that, when things are going bad, goes really, really bad, but when things are going good, goes really, really good.
With all the negative I've said about the Suns, I still expect 50+ wins (around 51-57, target of 54). I think their schedule has had as much to do with their record as their issues. They've really played a brutal schedule with their weakest game being Utah, a team that traditionally gives them fits anyways.
Dallas has really only played well in the opener vs. San Antonio.
