So Manny, by your rainbow drawings, it will not be snowing at 6am? But it probably will be at 6pm? What about in between? When should I sleep? I don't want to miss it :dizzy

We weren't here. We were at All-Star weekend.

I also wasn't in town during the 1985 "snow". I've never seen snow in San Antonio.

And never will.

6pm tomorrow is more likely. The next model runs will be out within an hour I believe, so I'll check then.

Its just a model prediction, so we'll see. But I do think we'll see snow in parts of the city.

Is it a shit load of snow where it will gather on the ground or will it melt as soon as it hits the ground?

MannyIsGod
01-16-2007, 03:46 AM
I doubt anything will melt that hits the ground, but it says about .25-.50 inches of rain, which would translate into 2-5 inches of snow.

Jess and I just went out to our corner store and the ice coverage isn't that impressive here. All of the trees and plants have it, as well as the signs and what not, but anything attatched to a heated building is still fine as are the roads.

However, the roads looked like they might be starting to ice over themselves.

Thickness Values At Their Lowest Today And Tonight, Reaching 546

Enter Our Area, Removed Mention Of Snow But Left Sleet. Upper

Shifts East. A Dry Wedge In The Mid And Upper Levels Will Move
Into The Area Thursday And Friday. But Another Digging Trough In
The Northern Stream Flow Will Increase Southerly Overrunning Winds

Thats a pretty worthless discussion. The forcaster doesn't believe the cold air will be high enough in the atmosphere to cause snow, but thats basically all he says.

Anyhow, precip seems to be moving back into town right now, so it'll start getting even nastier soon.

Wasn't that bad. No wind, so that helped. Things are frozen out there but the ice on our car looks like it's melting.

Is it still supposed to be < 32 degrees?

MannyIsGod
01-16-2007, 05:47 AM
Its below 32. Did it rain at all while you were out there? The radar is picking up rain moving back into your area. But the 2 weather stations closest to you are still well under freezing at 28 and 29 so I doubt it is melting at your place.

Those of you that have to work will probably have to go in considering that the rain is staying just to the NW. The NWS seems pretty convinced the airmass is too shallow for snow, but we'll see.

so this morning I go out to check weather conditions and my car. as I'm walking up the driveway, right when I get to the top I slip and fall right on my ass. Didn't see that one coming! I make it to my car (i have to move it in case I can't go to work, because it's in the mailman's "way")..anyway I make it to my car to move it, and I can't open the door. it's pretty much all encased in ice (the whole car). I try for a while but nothing.. so my dad (who almost fell as well but I warned him about the "danger zone") goes out there with a knife and eventually gets it open. I couldn't see ANYTHING through the windshield and I couldn't turn the wipers on or even lower the window to look out so I pretty much had to drive into the driveway with my driver's side door open so I could peek out and make sure I got in and didn't hit any of the other cars.

My dad kept all that in the trunk of the car incase ir froze over while we were out someplace, and he kept the same kit in the mudroom to the house.

I woke up to sleet. The last model runs from about 7 this morning STILL predict snow. That it is sleeting this hard at 1pm makes me really want to believe that snow is coming. The next model runs come out soon, and the NWS should have a new discussion soon. I expect them to put the mention of snow back into the forcast.

It was snowing pretty good for awhile but it slowed down though.

MannyIsGod
01-16-2007, 02:45 PM
I think this main column of precipitation is moving south along the front endge of the deeper cold air. I think thats why its raining/sleeting harder on it because the shallower air leads to easier and better overunning and lift. Because the deeper air gets less overrunning, you don't see as much precip over it (although it doesn't take much precipitation to give you inches of snow).

The radar loop I just looked at covers 3 hours and its easing south. In another 3 hours at the present rate the layer will push past San Antonio starting from the NW. Shelly and Kori will probably see anything before I do.

Yes! At least now you have a chance to see icy patches. Darkness not only means you can't see them, but the loss of what little daylight you have now means the bridges, overpasses, and roadways will freeze up even more (loss of radiational heating). Get home, girl!

01-16-2007, 03:15 PM
Veronica, the longer you stay the worse roads will get.

Oh, that's true.
It should only be for an hour longer than I would have gotten off.
I don't get off till 3:30.

They don't want to bring in my release for just that and I live close.

I was joking with security that if it gets bad out there I am going to spend the night in Select Comfort. :lol

Manny...is Jess back yet? Flying in could be an issue.
I got back from breezy 75 degree temps just in time :lol

Here's the problem. When we get these heavier showers, the liquid melts the existing ice a bit, but the moment the rain lets up it starts to refereeze. The kind of precip we're getting right now is flat out horrible and is going to make things really bad. If the temp right now is still at 30 degrees, theres no way its getting above 32 for any extended period of time. And if things melt a bit just to refreeze, then its worse than if the ice had just stayed put.

Just because it may be snowing at Kori's house, doesn't mean it will at mine!!!

That's right. If the rain history is an indicator, it will just snow at my house and the surrounding areas will be dry :lol

its been cold as fuck in this area the last few days what the fuck? and my sister calls me a week ago and tells me its like 70 degrees in NY.... what is the world coming to....It's scary! Now, if Sacramento could just cool down a little in the summer, all would be right in our world...

Bulverde and Borne seem to be as far south as the snow has gotten so far. I think(hope) that'll change after sundown though.

The temperature has dropped at my house a lot in the last two hours. Earlier I went out with a robe only and I was okay. Right now I went out with jeans and a sweater and I was freakin' dying.

It's a lot colder. But it's only freezing rain right now. No sleet for me.

Same here. All of the rooftops down the street are starting to freeze over.

My temp has come up about half a degree according to the personal weather station down the street. But I was explaining to Jess that after a rain shower comes through, some of the water evaporates which really cools down the air around so thats probably whats happening there.
