Doesn't Europe take the entire month of August off because 30 C is too hot to work?Unfortunately no.
The Italians used to have soemthing called "feragosta" when basically the whole country went on holidays during 3 weeks in august.
And although it's still kind of a tradition in Italy even they can't shut down the whole country like in the good ole days.

Same here. I used to telecommute 100% of the time, because all of the people I work with are scattered across the country and beyond. Then we got a new VP who decided that everyone had to come into the office no matter how little sense it made. So now I drive half an hour to an office without a single co-worker and consume the company's electricity, phone, space, internet, paper, toner, etc. etc. etc. ... and am less productive than I was working from home.
Not to mention there's no such thing as a "weather day" when you work from home ... unless the power goes out, but then again I have a UPS and a generator. :toast

Jekka and Kori - Yeah, my friend's kid did the box of cookie dough fundraiser. It's neat, because you just pry out how ever many cookies you want, and bake them at 325 for 14 minutes.
LaChino - VPN is the shit. I just wish that it didn't take extraordinary circumstances to allow telecommuting. The big boss is VERY old school. I fucked off a bit today (a bit :lol), but don't feel bad because only probably 6 people out of 13 in my group have the connectivity at all, so most did NOTHING today.

Telecommuting rules! Sure you don't get ice or snow days, but you also don't have to make up that time later, work twice as hard later to catch up, or lose out on the pay like a lot of people. I generally get 3 days off a week anyways, so I don't mind at all.

Kind of off-topic, but does anybody remember a thread on Fark (or elsewhere) from either 2004 or 2005 about a TV station that ran automated crawls for weather-related closings and people were submitting fake/funny, etc. stuff?

TXDOT is at their limits. I think we're going to see more ice tonight than last night and if the rain keeps coming down we'll start to see downed power lines and trees.
My Fire Department has been called out to 4 different addresses for power lines down and a tree on fire in the past 2 hours.........it maybe a loooooonnnnnnngggggg night.

This is the weather station's graphs from the location nearest Joe/Kori/Shelly. If you look at the barometric pressure graph, you'll see that it was at its highest around noon when we were getting the solid sleet. Thats going to need to go up past that level for snow to form.
Cold air is denser and applies more pressure. So as you see that risiing, thats a sign the air is getting colder upstairs. Its kinda going up now, but not very fast nor very much, so I'm not too sure we'll see anything but rain.

NWS' latest discussion seems to indicate their best guess is that we'll barely miss out. It sucks that they're not sending up a damn weather balloon here, because that would tell us a lot of information on the conditions upstairs.
.DISCUSSION...
FREEZING/FROZEN PRECIP CONTINUES OVER MOST OF THE CWA WITH SFC
TEMPS MAINLY BELOW FREEZING. EXCEPTION IS IN THE SOUTHWEST WHERE A
WARM TONGUE EXTENDS INTO UVALDE AND THE PRECIP IS RAIN. SAT
IMAGERY SHOWS THE SHORT WAVE MOVING INTO WEST TX AND THIS WILL
CONTINUE TO CAUSE PRECIP THROUGH THE NIGHT AND INTO THE MORNING.
WISH WE HAD A LOCAL SOUNDING TONIGHT. 00Z SOUNDING AT DRT IS A
SNOW SOUNDING WHILE CRP IS A FREEZING RAIN SOUNDING. SO THE
QUESTION IS HOW DEEP IS THE WARM LAYER IN BETWEEN? FROM UA
ANALYSIS EXPECT COLD ADVECTION IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER AND WARM
ADVECTION AROUND 700MB. THIS SUGGESTS SOME DECREASE IN THE WARM
LAYER, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO CHANGE PRECIP TO ONLY SNOW. SO HAVE
ADJUSTED FORECAST TO KEEP SNOW ACROSS THE HILL COUNTRY TO VAL
VERDE COUNTY WHILE TAKING THE SNOW OUT FOR MOST OTHER LOCATIONS.
WILL CONTINUE WINTER STORM WARNING UNTIL 18Z WITH CHANGES MENTIONED.

I'm not too sure we'll get better before noon. The warmest part of the day isn't until 3-4, and we might hit 34 or so. So at noon it might very well be 32 and nothing will have started to melt. And when it does start to melt it doesn't happen right away, so while I understand the places like ACCD and employers not wanting to cancel an entire day again, I doubt they'll have any other option tomorrow morning.

Another effect of this damn weather - I'm fairly confident the weather is preventing me from hearing about a job offer.

What's the best way to get the ice off the windshield if you don't have a scraper?
I used my drivers license earlier.

DO NOT USE HOT WATER. If you use cold water, thats fine, but if you use hot water you're liable to fuck your windshield.
I never put it on my windshield, i put it on the edges of my door so I could get it open. I then turned on my defrost and defrosted my windshield.
