SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have traded guard Beno Udrih to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a protected 2008 second round draft pick.

The 6-3 Udrih was selected by the Spurs in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft, with the 28th overall pick. In three seasons in San Antonio he appeared in 207 regular season games, averaging 5.2 points and 1.8 assists in 13.0 minutes.

I don't think Spurs will sign someone else.
Spurs are about $400K (or maybe less if Williams and other training cmap invite get some guaranteed money) below the luxury tax. Signing a new player for the year will cost something like $2.5M to Spurs.

They get a big trade exception in the Ricky Davis trade.
The second round pick could be top59 protected.

If McHale isn't stupid the deal should be Beno + $1.75M to pay his salary + a little cash as incentive (like $250K) for a TE and a top59 protected second round pick.

I guess they can wait until deals are prorated.A situation that'd make sense is:

-Spurs scout the D-League
-Spurs wait for prorated amount of minimum contract to get to around $300K
-Spurs sign player from D-League
-Spurs re-assign the player to the Toros

I wonder if that'd be allowed. It'd be a nice way to steal some D-League talent and improve the Toros chance of winning. Toros winning = more fans in stadium = more money for Holt.

Does this make the Spurs offseason a successful one?

Resign Oberto, Bonner, and Vaughn...draft Tiago Splitter, a prospect center....sign Ime Udoka, a prospect SF...extend Bruce Bowen a couple years....and now we lost the deadweight of Beno Udrih, and managed to find what might be a diamond-in-the-rough replacement.

After the Scolacolypse...I'd say that's a pretty decent recovery, if nothing else. Definitely goes through most of the checklist these forums set at the start of the offseason.

The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have traded guard Beno Udrih to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a protected 2008 second round draft pick.

InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner hears the Wolves also received cash considerations in the deal, and that they are going to waive Udrih. Strange deal.

The 6-3 Udrih was selected by the Spurs in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft, with the 28th overall pick. In three seasons in San Antonio he appeared in 207 regular season games, averaging 5.2 points and 1.8 assists in 13.0 minutes.

It will be interesting to see if Beno will be the one cut or if Minny cut someone else and want to see what Beno can do.Yeah, perhaps Minnesota just cuts him. The trade could be basically the Spurs giving the Timberwolves a little bit of cash just to allow the Spurs to move out from under the luxury tax threshold.

Even if the Spurs gave the Timberwolves Beno and $3M for a second round pick that won't materialize, I believe the Spurs still profit on that move due to coming in below the luxury tax threshold.

Although, we are dealing with Kevin McHale so perhaps the Spurs got an actual second round pick and didn't have to give up cash. That'd be a rather nice trade.

Here's quasi-confirmation on the Beno waived part of the transaction:

The Timberwolves finalized their roster late this afternoon, releasing Wayne Simien and placing Juwan Howard on waivers after a contract buyout as expected. They also made a last-minute deal that only makes sense in the convoluted world of NBA salary-cap specifics. San Antonio sent to the Wolves guard Beno Udrih and cash for a protected 2006 second-round draft pick that never will be delivered. The Wolves then waived Udrih and the Spurs got some salary-cap relief. Got it? I sure don’t.

Your 15 Timberwolves who will open the season at home Friday night against Denver are:

Randy Foye, Rashad McCants, Craig Smith, Mark Madsen, Marko Jaric, Corey Brewer, Chris Richard, Greg Buckner, Michael Doleac, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair and Antoine Walker. All but Foye, McCants, Smith, Madsen and Jaric are new to the team.

This trade tells me the Spurs are higher on Washington than I originally thought. Beno sucked but he was at least good enough for use in an emergency.

Washington now has a great opportunity. It sounds like he's going to open the year as the backup point guard. If he plays well enough, Pop is the type of coach that will allow him to keep that job. Even if Washington eventually fails, Vaughn would just need a few games to warm up and be ready for the playoffs.

I kinda like the idea of making Washington the backup point guard for the first couple months of the season to see how good he is. At worst, Pop has Vaughn to fall back on. At best, Washington can provide more than Vaughn and be another weapon for this team.

66.7% 2point FG
46.2% 3point FG
75.0% free throws

Pro basketball: Spurs trade Udrih to Timberwolves

Web Posted: 10/29/2007 05:54 PM CDT

Mike Monroe
Express-News Staff Writer

In the final hours before the deadline to set rosters for opening night, the Spurs traded point guard Beno Udrih to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a conditional second-round pick in the 2008 draft.

advertisement

Udrih, the club’s first-round draft pick in the 2004 draft, broke the index finger on his left (shooting) hand in the first days of training camp and did not play in the Spurs’ seven pre-season games. Having lost his status as primary backup to Tony Parker to veteran Jacque Vaughn last season, Udrih’s injury and the competitive play of rookie Darius Washington in the pre-season combined to make him expendable.

“This is a reflection on Darius’ play in the pre-season,” Spurs’ general manager R.C. Buford said. “It was unfortunate for Beno that he was injured. He wasn’t healthy and able to take advantage of Tony’s unavailability and Jacque’s injury, and Darius did take advantage.

“This deal also provides us some roster flexibility, both now and going forward.”

Indeed, since the Spurs received only a future draft pick, they were able to jettison Udrih’s $1.75 million contract. Washington’s contract is believed to be at or near the rookie minimum, which is $427,163 for the 2007-08 season.

Udrih played in 73 regular season games last season, averaging 4.7 points and 1.7 assists in an average of 13.0 minutes per game. He saw action in only eight of the Spurs’ 20 playoff games and scored only two post-season points in a total of only 20 post-season minutes.

This trade tells me the Spurs are higher on Washington than I originally thought. Beno sucked but he was at least good enough for use in an emergency.
I agree with that idea. While I think the notion of trading Beno has always been a topic of discussion, I think the Spurs feel as though they have a comfort zone with Washington that allows them to enter the season with 3 points including Darius.

This is another area in which the past, I think, taught a lesson. Pop went into the 2003-04 season with, essentially, Parker and Carter as his point guards. When Parker couldn't play in the opener, and then Carter got hurt 2 games in, the Spurs scrambled to bring in Jason Hart and Shane Heal. They spent the rest of the season with only Hart as a backup to Parker (until the infamous Charlie Ward acquisition) and had nobody who could really play the point when Parker needed rest. That team survived on motion and ball movement, but I think Pop has always desired the safety blanket of having true point-type players to run the show. The point guard fiasco of 2003-04 begot the drafting of Beno Udrih, which has now run its course. In the meantime, Pop has made finding point guards a bit of a priority.

Identifying a 3rd guy who could be trusted to play quality minutes at the point in the NBA was likely the spark that made the Beno deal come to fruition.

Washington now has a great opportunity. It sounds like he's going to open the year as the backup point guard. If he plays well enough, Pop is the type of coach that will allow him to keep that job. Even if Washington eventually fails, Vaughn would just need a few games to warm up and be ready for the playoffs.
I think Darius is going to have to do a lot to convince Pop to abandon Vaughn as the backup, mostly because the notion of sending Darius to Austin has some developmental appeal. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that Darius could, in essence, play his way out of assignment to the Toros if he's good early on, but I suspect that the plan for him is a tour of duty in Austin while Vaughn resumes the backup point role.

I kinda like the idea of making Washington the backup point guard for the first couple months of the season to see how good he is. At worst, Pop has Vaughn to fall back on. At best, Washington can provide more than Vaughn and be another weapon for this team.
I see the logic in that scenario and think it could be a perfect spot to make that kind of a move. At the very least, it seems we can be sure that he's mentally tougher and far more motivated than Beno, even if not as physically talented as Beno is. I still have the feeling that Darius will get some chances early, but that even if he shows some signs, the Spurs will focus more on development than getting immediate contributions.

Eq. 2: Butler + Scola = Spanoulis + 2nd-round pick + cash

now protected 2nd-round pick = 0, therefore Eq. 1 becomes

Eq. 3 cash = -Beno

Combining Eqs. 2 and 3,
Butler + Scola = Spanoulis + 2nd round pick -Beno

Butler = out of league = 0
Spanoulis = out of league = 0
Beno = out of league = 0

therefore,
Scola = 2nd round pick

It all fits together, Q.E.D.

Bliss just won't be the same without him.

Especially drunk nights at Las Palapas.

Oh well.

We managed to get rid of the two most useless contracts we had on the books. We managed to keep our 1st rounder this year in Spain to polish his skills and be a monster next year. We dumped our 2nd rounder who wasn't good enough and non-guaranteed. We got cash for VSPan and signed Udoka, et all with it.

We are LEAN and MEAN!!!!

The Wolves traded a conditional second-round pick to the Spurs for money and guard Beno Udrih. The Wolves waived Udrih and the pick will be lost only if the Wolves finish with one of the four top records in the NBA this season.

Considering the whole "2006" pick, are we sure it's not "one of the four worst"?

That would make some sense, actually.

Why would the Wolves be concerned with protecting picks in the high 50s?

Why would a team trade for a guy and then waive him? How in the hell does that save money? Someone care to explain?

Two questions for everyone

1) Did the wolves send us a trade exception back, or were they far enough under Salary Cap just to eat beno's contract. If they did send us a trade exception, how big?

2) Sure, the pick is protected in 2008. But what is the protection in 2k9 and 2k10? Remember, protected draft picks don't just dissapear. THey need to wait some number of years that I don't recall right now (either 3 or 5) before they become void...

Didn't the Chicago pick disappear this past year, or do we get it this year if they finish in the top 8? As far as the Timberwolves' pick is concerned, even if it lasts for 3 or 5 years, I don't think they'll finish with a top four record.

The Wolves are over the lux tax right now I believe, so it had to be a trade exception (and there are news reports that this only went down due to the exception they got in the Ricky Davis and company trade last week).

Yes, it did, but that was how many years after the original deal? According to NBADraft.net that was from the Errick Barkley trade (that was in 2002). The pick was originally a 2003 2nd round pick, protected. This suggests that we have until 2012 to collect...
http://www.nbadraft.net/2007draftnotes.asp

Usually, the protection on a pick decreases as it gets older ... ie if its protected to bottom 4 in 08, maybe bottom 8 in 09, and bottom 12 in 2010.

Trading Beno saved :
- $1.75M in salary.
- $1.3M in Luxury tax
- between $1.5M and $2M in luxury tax money redistribution.

They save between $4.5M and $5M.
Just wait. The Holt Haters around here will suddenly be moaning about the FO getting rid of Beno only because Holt is so cheap and motivated only by the money he saved with this trade.

I'm pretty sure it's already been said in the previous 9+ pages, but this is a clear indication to me that the Spurs are impressed and confident in Darius Washington.

Spurs could've traded Beno away for scraps at any time in the past two years, but it took them having real confidence that there wouldn't be a void left with his departure (as well as the monetary incentive) to make the deal.

Am I right to assume Washington will get some serious burn over the next couple weeks?

If so, I'm excited to see what he can bring....

I read somewhere that Washington was being pimped as the equal to Telfair, back when he wasnt a bust, when he was in highschool - is that true?

Has he got his head on straight? Is he spurs material, or a 'baller'? (The article said the reason telfair made it to the pros easier, was Washington was too arrogant and only would pass to teammates if they played defence - surely thats a good thing :))

And thank goodness (sorry groupies) that Beno is gone - last thing the Spurs need or want is a cancer in the lockerroom as he was being reported to becoming...
